Matching wedge shafts to lightweight graphite iron shafts

FSHRJMPN

Recommended Posts

I have KBS max 65 in my PXG Gen 6 irons.  What shafts will match up for my wedges?

I have tried several wedges and am now playing Vokeys.  However, I have recently picked up a 52 degree Epon Tour Wedge with Nippon's  NS Pro Modulus3 105 and love it.  However, I am  unsure if the shaft  is the best match.  I am senior golfer and have slower swing speed at about 85 mph in my Driver.  On  paper it seems like a big jump in weight (from 65 in irons to aprox 111 or so).   I am replacing my Vokey wedges with Epon Tour and need to decide on shafts.  Nippon evidently makes only 1 flex in its mod3 105 shaft. Suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Thanks,  FSHRJMPN

We just had a great call with Jacob Clarke. Lead designer for the new PING s159 wedges.

We asked him about shafts and his thought was to match closely to your iron shafts in terms of weight.

If you only use a wedge for full shots then go with your iron shaft.

I use the TT dynamic gold tour 120’s stiff in all my irons.

Play like a champion today!

Senior golfer here as well.   I use 75 gram graphite in all of my irons, but I want my sand and lob wedges to feel heavier than the rest.   My 54* and 58* are Maltby components shafted with two Ping TFC100 regular flex shafts, and for some reason they DO feel heavier, even though they're 75 gr. as well.   When it's time to change out the heads, I plan to keep those Ping shafts and install them in the new ones....probably Maltby again!

I have 85g shafts in my irons.   I have the same shaft in my PW and GW and put Accra Iwedge 90gr shafts in my 2 vokey wedges.   The stock shaft in the vokeys was just too much of a weight transition so I went closer in weight.

I am not a senior golfer, swing 105+, and just like the feel of lighter shafts.

This so awesome I just posted yesterday about this same conundrum. I play a heavy shaft s400 (132g) in my wedges but have a lighter shaft Elevate 95 (98g) in all the rest of my irons and I’m trying to figure out what I want to switch the irons to to give a similar feel to the wedges. Not sure I’ll go as far as matching the S400 across the set but I do think something in the 120g range makes sense.

Bottom line one of the most important things about wedges is your feel for distance. Whatever feels best and gets you closest is the right choice. Heavier is sometimes better for those who lack feel.

My current bag makeup has the same DG120 shafts in my irons and all my wedges. I felt that the consistency was key across the board.

This next go round will be slightly different as I'm transitioning to graphite and lowering the weight. I'm likely going to look at a slightly heavier shaft of the same make/model for my wedges, and possibly a lighter flex. If I go with 95g Stiff in my irons, I may look at 105g Regular for my wedges for the added feel that lighter flex adds. I don't do full swings with my SW and LW, that's why I'm looking to make this change.

The pro's usually do something similar, or at least they lower the flex in their wedges for that added feel. The heavier part may or may not be the choice, but I am definitely thinking about the lighter flex.

While I like a slightly heavier wedge shaft than my irons.  I use a lighter shaft than I used to and it’s been better for me.  I think shaft stiffness is important too.  I find slightly softer is better so it works better for partial wedge shots.  But I think swing weight is important variable too.

Hoping to try different wedge shafts outdoors this year to see what works for me.

If you like the heavier shaft in the wedges and there aren't gapping issues, than go for it. I have the same weight shaft in irons (Project X 6.0 120g) through wedges (KBS Tour 120 S). It works well for me that way and I don't have any gapping issues. I tried lighter weight shafts on previous wedges and lost some control of the face. At the time, I also hit the 52* wedge only 5 yds shorter than my irons set 47* PW because I could swing the lighter weight 52* wedge faster.

I am also a senior 77 y.o. and playing 2002 MacGregor irons.  I replaced the original TT Dynamic Gold S300 shafts with Nippon N.S. Pro Zelos 8 R steel shafts at 84g.  Even though the Nippons are listed as R flex, they spec out more like an L flex, which fits my swing better than the heavier steel shafts.  I keep experimenting with graphite shafts for my irons, but prefer the steel.

My set PW is 48º so I use Callaway 54º SW and a 60º LW which I ordered with KBS Tour 90 regular flex. Weighs 95g.  I like a slightly heavier feel in wedges but I really never hit a full shot with either the SW or LW.  All of these wedge shots are “feel” shots so it doesn’t really matter if the shafts are the same as my irons.  It’s whatever you get used to.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Me be senior too.  But I have steel shafts in my wedges.  I am still reg flex on everything except 3 wood and driver.  Recoil F3 70 or 60 grams in Ping I 500 irons.  I did try a PXG wedge with a KBS reg flex but it was way too stiff and probably too heavy.  Most wedges are made to go with a TT Dynamic Gold wedge shaft and I am fine to leave it alone.  I have a 52 degree and a 60 degree Mizuno, both classic style GFF.  And an ancient original Ben Hogan sand wedge, the Sure Out, 56 degree, with a bounce-sole bigger than a grapefruit, on the Hogan Apex red label wedge shaft.

Drv: PXG 0211, Evnflo Riptide CB Senior, Callaway 454 TI (2004) 10 and an 11, regular flex.

3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr  Tensei Blue CK 55 gram senior. TM Burner Superfast 3.0 M flex.

5W : Titleist TSi 1 on Aldila Ascent 40 regular flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC 3 18 degree, on Mamiya Recoil reg flex.

4 iron:  forged Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree hollow body.

6 - PW: Ping I 500, on Recoil reg flex.

When buying wedges of the shelf they usually seem around  90's to 105's in weight. I couldn't ever go with that weight in my irons. I do not have any gapping issues as my irons are 70 and wedges are 95 Aerotech Steelfibers. I like the heavier feel in my wedges as it makes a big difference hitting out of the rough/sand and still wanting the height. I have always played heavier weight wedges over my irons as what makes the biggest difference is make sure you have the gaps correctly spaced.
