It's one of the reasons I dove as hard into golf as I did, two dozen years ago.

It also got me in a fair bit of trouble in terms of club acquisition.   LOL

A putter, definitely a new putter.  As of now, the weakest part of my game is putting.  I went to Dicks today and tried several different models.  Testing the weight, the feel, and if I actually got it in the hole.  At the moment looking seriously at the Cleveland HB 10.5C.  I did not buy it today, as I really want to make as sure as I can before putting my cash down.

OK.  I did try out a few more putters, but I decided to stick with my original choice.  Unless someone has given me a Dicks gift card, I do not shop there.  I much prefer to shop local, and have been a customer at a local pro shop for years.  Anyway I went there and talked to the pro.  I explained what I was looking for, and why.  She had me try a few possible alternatives, but after watching me she agreed with my first choice.  She did recommend a longer shaft, which sounded good to me.  The good news is I was less expensive than the big box store.  The bad news is, it will not ship until mid May.  The supply chain issues are affecting multiple industries.

As I await for my fitted Mizuno 223/225 combo set to come in the next few weeks, I have turned my eyes towards hybrids and woods. Went for a fitting this past Sunday. I have never done a fitting in this part of my bag and it is much needed. Mostly because I have stock light and flexy shafts not suited to me. I started at 3/4 hybrids and 5 woods.

Coming from a 3/4 Cobra King F7 dialed down to 19°., it has too much offset to keep at standard. Not to mention a stock S shaft that feels super flexy. It required me to slow my club head speed significantly down to properly load and make solid contact. Still treats me well but not a lot of stopping power. 208 carry, 228 total on Trackman that day. So a less offset head and stiffer/heavier shaft is what I was looking for.

I struggled with consistency as we explored a few shaft and head combinations. Had some success with the Srixon ZX in the HZRDUS 6.0 80g shaft. My body for some reason loves the HZRDUS line. Tsi2, TSi3 saw some success as well. But once I had the Mitsubishi MMT 80X in the Cobra King Tec 3H 19° head, my consistency lit up.

623500071_ScreenShot2022-04-06at2_35_55PM.png.a58b5b02b1b57293fd70a95c336bc005.png

The King Tec looked great at address with the two tone "Taylormade" famous look as well as in the super hybrid/utility wood size look to it. Slightly bigger than the traditional hybrids and slightly smaller than a 5 or 3W. Not to mention, it is super adjustable, rare in the hybrid space. Adjustable hosel for loft and lie as well as a three weight system. One weight in the toe, one in the center of the club, and one in the heel. Since I wanted to hit it into greens, my spin and landing angle were too low to achieve this. Adjusting the 3H higher would have closed the face and not worked for me. I want to avoid the lefty low spin dive bombs.

Fitter popped in the 4H 21° turned down to 20° on the MMT. With it a tad more open and 1° extra loft, my spin popped up 900rpm vs the 3H, carry down 4 yards and total down 8. Club and shaft were negating my overdraw tenancies and ball flight was glued to the center line.

Last year, Matt Blois saw some awesome results with it too when he was still working with TXG:

Looking at my 7 iron warm up, it was a very slow day for me coming off of a stomach bug and in the midst of a sinus infection. I was 8mph down normal speeds. Sheesh. I expect I will get a little extra spin, distance, and a little less roll out. And less roll out when I hit real world greens and not Trackman carpet fairways.

Then we tested 5 woods. The 5 wood numbers looked very close to my hybrid numbers. Still need a lot of work on my AoA. The look of a wood makes me want to hit up on it more so I hit the 5 woods a bit more thin on average and couldn't get the consistency.

Going to do the club in between driver and the King Tec next. With this fitting result, I am intrigued by the Callaway Apex UW as a possible traditional 3W replacement. My friend has seen great results with it as well. It is a beast at hybrid shaft length.

I would want to hit this club off the tee as an alternative to driver as well as off the deck in those rare occasions. Open to suggestions!

I'm considering a Mizuno OMOI #1 putter. I was custom fit for my current putter in 2008 (by Dana Upshaw, I know some of you know him), but I've been having issues with distance control on longer putts, especially on fast greens. (Yes, I know, practice!) I had a session with my current fitter (Eric), and he confirmed that this putter (La Jolla CP03) still fits me quite well, though we did tweak the lie, as it's a soft forging, and the lie tends to move upright with use. However, it's really heavy (a lot of lead down the shaft until it "felt good"), and while that works great on the slower muni greens I typically play, fast greens kill me. Eric had me try a couple lighter putters, and the OMOI was a clear winner. I know it's considered a heavier putter, but it's lighter than what I'm using. It's also one of a very few that can be bent to my very flat lie spec of 65°. The current plan is to play a bit more as I get into the season, and see how it goes. I will also be practicing with the demo Mizuno putter whenever I go to the range. I don't have a firm timetable for a decision, but I think I'll probably make a decision in two weeks or less.

I went to the driving range last week and was fortunate enough to be placed in a baby next to someone who had the new mizuno Z220 driver with the hazardous blue RDX shaft. Funny enough the guy told me that it was a demo given to him by Mizuno rep in the area, would love to know which one, because I haven’t been able to find any yet with my searching online. The guy was so nice that he let me try it out as long as I wanted to at the range. Fantastic driver, a little bit of a ping a sound in comparison to my G 425LST, The face felt really hot the ball seemed to fly quite well. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any numbers from a launch monitor. The shaft in the head combo pole felt extremely light compared to my current driver. I’d be interested to see what happens with my swing speed and distance in comparison to what I am currently playing with

Was hitting my Stage 2 Tour 3h at an indoor sim facility recently.  It was going nowhere.  I use it as a 2i/5w replacement, I was hitting it only as far as I was hitting my 5 iron (27* fwiw).  No bueno.  Gave it an inspection, and sure enough, the face has flattened.

Quoting One Stab, "it was a good death."

So I'm looking to plug something in that club slot, the 17* to 18* zone, depending on the distance I get out of it.  I was looking at various TM and Cobra hybrids, when it occurred to me; the new King Tec.  Ironically and coincidentally, just mentioned above by MWGolf.  LOL

I'm not sure if I'll go wtih the 17* played standard, or the 19* turned down.  Have to think on that a bit.  Maybe even hit the bloody thing beforehand.  Who would ever think of doing that?  😉

Now that I have a net and a decent mat, I am looking at getting a personal launch monitor for additional feedback during back yard practice sessions. Currently considering the Rapsodo MLM and PRGR.

Was playing around on Fujikura's site and got an interesting shaft recommendation...

It would seem there's more to come for the Ventus TR line.

Been reading and thinking too much. Thinking of going to a 4W/7W setup, dropping the 4i and playing either my Super or sub70 hybrid for punch outs or low tee shots. Ugh

Debating on picking up some SM9s but I cannot make my mind up on what finish to go with. TC holds up the best, you can never go wrong with black, and the brushed steel looks great as well.

Tough.

What issue are you having that this would solve?

Or what are you looking to achieve with this setup?

High trajectory shots. Getting a club airborne easier from a particular distance. Tbh, I just need to let the season play out. The crappy weather is playing mind games

I don't know what I'm thinking about right now... after demoing the Halo XLs and seeing 5 yard gains over my D200s, I'm not sure if that's worth the $900 cost right now. Fairway is all set with the Hy-Wood, the Launcher 5h is firmly in the bag after an awesome range session the other day... maybe I'm gonna spend some time thinking about a new driver???? This feels weird to not have a serious equipment ponder on the mind.

For the 4w that makes sense for easier to hit than a 3w off the deck, also assuming that spot in the bag is similar to driver in that you want it to go as far as a possible either as a tee ball or into a par 5.

The 7w could be a tricky spot if the launch characteristics don’t get you the same distance as the club it’s replacing and creates a gapping issue.

I remember some high trajectory shots last year... from the adjacent fairway.

I’ve started looking at speed trainers but they seem to be a bit pricey. I found this on Amazon. It comes with 2 trainers and states that you would use your driver as the the middle weight trainer. Has anyone tried this product?
