The Vero X2.... This will be my first Ball test for MGS, and I'm very excited. I've been a member on this forum for... longer than I thought! I've been active with helping to coordinate a PNW MGS meetup over the last 4 years and have previously done official reviews on a Mizuno Driver, Wilson Irons, and the Birdieball outdoor mat.

I've also done some unofficial reviews of the Foresight GC3, and to my knowledge, the first, last and best review of a golf tee on this site.

During the winter of 21-22 I spent many hours hitting various golf balls into a screen doing a pretty thorough ball test. So being able to test a ball is something I have some history with. That ball testing has had me gaming the Srixon Z-Star Diamond. With close fits in the Chromesoft X LS and the Srixon Z-Star VX.

With driver I'm low launch low spin.  There are many balls that I can't get over 2k spin and fall out of the sky for me. I have a swing speed averaging 100mph, AoA of +5° and a ball speed just shy of 150mph. I play a Sim2 Max 12° head, with that and the Z-star diamond I'm in the 14° launch and 2400 rpm of spin range. Irons I'm more of a sweeper, AoA in the -1° range, so still down, but not much. 7i spin is normally about 5500rpm and carry is about 170y. With putter I tend to leave putts exactly 1" short. So if this ball rolls 1" further that would alone drop 3 strokes off my game

I have no doubt that I will be able to check to see if these float. How resistive they are to cart paths, trees and hozels. Or if they taste like peppermint. So, let the games begin.

Quick first impressions... it's a urethane golf ball all right.  It's white,  round and feels like a premium cover. 

Very similar in feel to new ProV1s.

They have that new golf ball smell,  and taste.  They are not peppermint flavored. This wasn't a claim,  but I'm always on the hunt for a good flavor option.

Since we didn't go through the ordering process, but l was curious, i went to the OnCore shop to see about customization options.  Price increases to $56/dz and you can add some lines of text,  or even upload your own image/logo.

All 3 dozen came with balls numbered #1-#4 which is of course standard. But also appears to be the only option with no number options listed on the site.  So if like Brooks you need #33 on your ball,  that choice doesn't look available.

The box itself is... okay.  It's umm... not my style. Somehow too much and too little at the same time. 

I haven't opened all 3 dozen balls to inspect,  but i did check the first 12, and found no imperfections at all. 

Tl:dr. Looks premium,  feels premium,  tastes like urethane.

The Review

-Aesthetics

For the ball's look, the OnCore logo is too big and bold for my taste. Not a fan of the gold "X" in the alignment stripe either. Aesthetically, it's not the worst branded ball, but the aestetic of all the other major brands rank higher.

lots of numbers there, but basically, it very much performed like a premium urethane golf ball on all comparisons. Nothing bad or alarming on any of the numbers.

Numbers (20/20)

-On The Course

I played 8 rounds with this ball, in temps from 40°F to 95°F. From Washington St to Florida.

Driver

Guaranteed to blow your mind with a driver. The LM numbers didn't tell me that this was going to be the longest golf ball off the tee I've ever hit. They didn't capture what this ball was going to be off the tee. Lower trajectory, cruise missile speed, explosive feel.

Irons

Good flight, good hold. Not an exotic Korean BBQ sauce, but a solid KC style with good all around body, taste and aroma.... just go with this analogy.

Wedges / Putting:

With wedges, it behaves as expected for a bump and run player like me.
When putting it's hard, not too hard. Its clicky, but not too clicky. It's a high compression ball, and if it didn't have a logo, I'd have a hard time telling it apart from a Bridgestone BX, CSX LS, or ProV1x.

On The Course (20 out of 20)

-The Good, the bad, the in-between

The numbers are good, the on course is good(potentially very good). The looks are bad(subjective), and the price is bad.

I've played Snell and Vice because I found they gave premium performance at a lower price point. This ball, gives all the premium performance, but at the premium pricing.

Given that it is a DTC online order only ball, it has some minor issues with that. You need to order ahead, you can't just pick up a box on the way to the course. That is in the middle of it all just another point to consider.

The Good, the bad, the in-between (15 out of 20)

-Play it or Trade it?

I'm going to amend this question to, will I re-order it. In short, no. But I will keep it in my bag to hand out when I see someone balloon a tee shot for the 4th time in a round, or when a long drive hole pops up on our weekly league.

If you are a current Left Dash player, this ball is absolutely a contender for you. If you play the Kirkland ball and you watch your drives soar vertically and suck back instead of bound forward, you should try this ball out.

But for me, the aesthetics, combined with the price point mean that it won't be my gamer. There are some deals to be had on it, I believe there is a veteran discount, and I've been told they run B2G1 deals. But so do most brands. 

Play it or Trade it? (10 out of 20)

In conclusion

OnCore has made a great ball with the Vero X2. Its every bit as good as anything made that I've hit and tested. If you ever struggle with a ballooned tee shot that lacks legs, you should try this ball. A few low marks on looks and price keep it out of my bag, but improvements could be made and it would be a real contender to be back in play for me.

Introduction

Allow me to introduce myself and my history with the game of golf. My name is Grant Marsh, and I reside in the beautiful state of Colorado. I enjoy playing at a multitude of courses including many municipal courses as well as premium offerings. However, my favorite golf course is the Fossil Trace GC in Golden, CO. Interestingly, it is also where I landed my first and only hole in one, making it an especially memorable course for me.

Although I started playing golf as recently as September 2021, my goal is to achieve a single digit handicap by the end of this season. Currently, I am a casual golfer who occasionally takes on an 18-hole course alone to see how low I can score. Nevertheless, I prefer playing with friends of varying skill levels and enjoying a nice day in the sun.

Here are some general statistics from the rounds of golf that I play to give readers an idea of what an average round looks like for me: I hit about 43% of fairways and 33% of greens, and my average putt count is 2.06 per hole. Unfortunately, my approach shots are my weakest point on the course, which makes par 3s some of the worst holes I play. When it comes to scoring, I struggle with major blow-up holes. While 79% of the holes I play are bogey or better, if I'm not achieving that mark, it's rare that I manage to save a double.

Overall, the biggest challenge in my golf game is maintaining consistency while staying confident with my equipment. That's why I'm excited to test whether the OnCore X2 ball can help me achieve my goals.

I intend to provide a relatable experience for fellow mid-handicappers looking to move up by putting the OnCore X2 ball through rigorous testing. Using my Swing Caddie SC300 launch monitor, I will gather data to confirm or deny the claims by OnCore regarding low spin and high distance claims off the tee, claims regarding high spin around greens, and comparing the ball's performance against big players like Pro V1x, Chrome Soft X, TP5x, and Vice Pro Plus. I will provide subjective (sound and feel) and objective (wear, spin, ball speed, and distance) metrics to compare and contrast the balls.

Ultimately, my goal is to determine whether the OnCore X2 ball can match the TP5x's performance, my current ball, while providing a better feel around the greens. My ideal ball should sound slightly clicky off the face and feel firm yet springy at high swing speeds. With a price of $50 a dozen, I expect the OnCore X2 ball to perform comparably to other balls in the same category regarding spin and ball speed.

Unboxing and First Impressions: 9/10

As I eagerly arrived home from a long day of work, I was met with a package that contained a set of 3 one-dozen boxes of OnCore Vero X2 golf balls. My excitement was instense as I tore open the cardboard and cut through the tape to get to these golf balls. Before diving into the full review, I conducted some first impression tests, comparing them to my current gamers, including the TP5x and Pro V1x balls.

Upon initial inspection, I must admit that the yellow packaging left me with mixed feelings. While the text and marketing materials conveyed the ball's impressive technology and performance-enhancing features, the brighter yellow colors and the fonts gave the impression that the ball was geared towards a senior audience with lower swing speeds and a need for lower compression numbers, similar to a marketing campaign from XXIO. However, my parents raised me to never judge a book by it's cover, so I remained optimistic to see what performance figures these balls could produce.

One of my biggest gripes with the ball was the alignment aid. The almost misplaced X on the line proved to be slightly distracting and was a topic of discussion among my fellow testers. However, I acknowledge that this is more of an aesthetic issue and does not affect the ball's performance.

One element of the ball that impressed me was the comforting pitch it produced when dropped on a solid surface, flooring, or when hit at the simulator. As a mid-handicapper, I place a lot of importance on the sound of a golf ball, and the OnCore Vero X2 did not disappoint in that regard.

After playing with the OnCore Vero X2, I must say that my initial impressions did not do the ball justice. While I had reservations about the ball's aesthetics, its performance on the golf course made up for it. The ball's advanced design and unique features allowed for a seamless and responsive experience, inspiring confidence and trust in its abilities.

Overall, my first impressions of the OnCore Vero X2 were mixed, but mostly positive. While there were some aesthetic issues with the packaging and alignment aid, the ball's impressive performance and advanced design make it a solid contender for any golf enthusiast looking to take their game to the next level. I look forward to getting a lot more rounds and simulator sessions in with these balls to really determine their overall performance and how those metric compare to their peers that I currently play. For this section, I am happy to see that OnCore provided for the testers and I am intrigued by the design decisions the company has made, so I give it a 9 out of 10.

Aesthetics: 6/10

As I had alluded to in my introduction, yellow just is not my color - it doesn’t seem to go well with my eyes.

In terms of sound and feel, the ball exudes a satisfying firmness that surpasses the TP5x and aligns closely with the Pro V1x. One aspect of the ball's aesthetics that has drawn criticism from my fellow golfers is the alignment line. Having played numerous rounds with this ball, I can confidently say that I'm not particularly fond of the large, curvy X right in the middle of the line. However, it's not all negative when it comes to the aesthetics. Compared to more traditional-looking Titleist, Vice, or TaylorMade golf balls, I found it much easier to identify my ball from a distance due to its unique appearance. OnCore deserves credit for deviating from the standard black fonts commonly seen on golf balls. Well done, guys.

Taking everything into consideration, I would rate the overall aesthetics of this golf ball a 6 out of 10. While there is room for improvement, it certainly stands out in terms of visual distinctiveness.

 

The Numbers: 17/20

Initially, I didn't pay close attention to the numbers during the early stages of testing, as my main focus was on gauging the ball's feel off the club face and its performance in the air. However, as I continued testing, I couldn't help but notice that the OnCore X2 didn't seem to promote my draw as much as the Titleist Pro V1x (one of my current go-to balls). I was intrigued to dig deeper and uncover the reasons behind this observation. Let's take a closer look at the numbers obtained during the latter part of my testing. 

When it came to my wedge shots with the OnCore X2 and my other two primary balls, I observed a relatively lower launch trajectory and the highest ball speed among the competitors (keep in mind that these numbers are based on my 11-handicap level). I didn't encounter any significant sidespin issues with clubs below the pitching wedge, mainly because I don't attempt to shape shots with these shorter clubs. However, it wasn't surprising to see slightly lower spin numbers, as I did experience some rollout on the greens during rounds in Colorado, where every RPM can make a difference.

Moving on to my 7-iron numbers with the OnCore X2 and the other balls, I started to notice a significant challenge I faced with my mid-to-long iron play: launch angle. Personally, I struggle to achieve the desired loft with any club, and I couldn't justify sacrificing that aspect for a slight gain in ball speed (which I didn't observe with the OnCore X2 during my 7-iron testing). This is where the Pro V1x truly excelled for me, as it consistently produced the spin and launch angle that I was looking for.

Overall, OnCore's claims about reduced sidespin and increased distance held true in my testing. I firmly believe that the numbers on this ball will greatly benefit players aiming for straight shots with high club head speeds. However, it doesn't tick all the boxes for me in terms of workability, which is why I would give it a rating of 17 out of 20.

On The Course: 14/20

During my time on the course, the performance of the Vero X2 matched my expectations based on its compression numbers and my personal playstyle. Off the tee, I experienced some of my best and most accurate drives, with impressive straightness. When it came to iron shots, I noticed decent launch angles and flight characteristics similar to its competitors. The ball allowed for shot shaping, and I didn't encounter any significant inconsistencies in distance control. Moving on to putting, despite my personal dislike for the alignment aid, I found the Vero X2 to be consistently reliable in terms of contact, feel, and roll. Unlike the peculiar sound described in Rick Shiels' video about PXG's new golf ball, I'm pleased to report that the Vero X2 did not exhibit any unusual quirks on the greens.

As someone who doesn't compete at a highly competitive level, my overall impression of the Vero X2 is that it performs well both in comparison to its competitors and on its own merits. It offers slightly lower-than-expected spin but delivers greater-than-expected distances in real-world situations. If this type of ball aligns with your preferences, you'll find comfort in choosing the X2 over the Pro V1x and TP5x when you head out to your local course. However, my personal preference for a golf ball differ at the moment, which is why I would rate the Vero X2 a 14 out of 20.

 

 

 

 

The Good, The Bad, The Inbetween: 16/20

Throughout my extensive rounds with the OnCore Vero X2 ball across various courses, ranging from country clubs to municipal courses in different locations like Florida and Colorado, I've had a wide range of experiences, with my worst round being +29 and my best at +6. After all those rounds, I can confidently affirm, without a hint of uncertainty, that the OnCore Vero X2 ball, when played by an 11-handicap golfer in their mid-twenties like myself, is just alright.

Now, I know that might sound like a vague response, but bear with me as I elaborate. The ball excelled in certain areas such as ball speed, minimal sidespin off the tee, and noticeable aesthetics. However, it didn't meet all my expectations for a premium golf ball, especially in the very areas where it showcased strengths. As a young and capable golfer who strives for shot shaping and consistent misses, I couldn't quite find the level of comfort and performance I was seeking with the Vero X2.

One crucial aspect that sets OnCore apart from companies like TaylorMade and Titleist is the palpable sense of a smaller, focused vision within the OnCore brand. In the past, I've encountered customer support issues with Titleist and Callaway, including long wait times and underwhelming service. In contrast, OnCore impressed me when the test balls arrived late by promptly sending all testers an additional dozen balls as a gesture of goodwill. Now, readers might perceive this as an attempt to earn favorable reviews, but I genuinely believe they would extend the same level of care to anyone purchasing their balls.

Overall, considering these various aspects, I would rate the miscellaneous category a 16 out of 20 for the team at OnCore.

Play it or Trade it?: 10/20

The ball was good, don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed my time playing with it and I think I was really starting to come around to some of its design quirks and its differing flight characteristics. However, all good things must come to an end.

This is by far the hardest section for me to rate, because I really am in between on if this golf ball is the best or worst option for me when compared to the field. However, I will be deciding to Trade it for the TaylorMade TP5x. While this decision is not permanent, I cherish the increased launch of the TP5x over the ball speed gains of the OnCore Vero X2. Also, I have recently became a fan of taylormade products and I prefer the aesthetic and pricing deals that have been going on for their golf balls. My biggest deterrent towards the X2 is the price, as I would be much more apt to buy them if they were priced with the Vice balls or even just undercutting the Titleist, Callaway, and Taylormades of the world.

Despite my decision to trade the OnCore Vero X2, I want to emphasize that I harbor no negative feelings toward my time spent playing with these balls. Therefore, I rate this section an even 10 out of 20.

TL;DR Conclusion

The OnCore Vero X2 is in fact a golf ball. Even more importantly, it is a very good golf ball for people who swing the club fast and want the ball to go as fast and straight as possible. It is a great ball for people who want a Pro V1x competitor but don’t want to fork over $55 a dozen and deal with a HUGE golf brand for customer service needs. It is not the best ball for those who seek the best that shot shaping has to offer, or are searching for the absolute most consistent flight from their ball. There is a reason that Titleist holds the crown for the best golf ball.

I hope that those of you readers out there reading my review will give the OnCore Vero X2 a chance. The company has been great and I really do believe there is a place in the market for their product. If you find yourself drawn to the observations I alluded to in my review - go out and get a dozen and let me know how you play!

**Also, I didn’t get the chance to compare these with the Vice Pro Plus very much, so expect some follow-up testing on those balls as I am one of those average golfers who actually has to buy their gear unlike the guys who just played the PGA Championship.

Howdy!

I'm Greg, a former college golfer from Texas that got super burned out on tournament life, took a couple years off, and is now dabbling in some small tournaments here and there. I'm in Durham, North Carolina and play the vast majority of my rounds at The Preserve at Jordan Lake, which is a Davis Love III design that is the longest 6400 yards I've ever played, in no small part because there are so many holes (including 2 par 5's!) that take driver out of your hands. The course places a premium on ballstriking with a ton of forced carries to elevated, well-guarded greens. For ball testing, all of this is pretty important information! As much as I want a bomber off the tee, I really need precision on irons and wedges.

I'm a high-launch, high-spin player (though I've been working to get that launch down!) About a year and a half ago, I had taken a bunch of spin off my driver and so when I tested the Vero X1 as part of Golf EQ's data collection, it was an absolute monster off the tee. Except for downwind, when it would just fall out of the sky. I put it on a launch monitor and, at the time, could only get ~1700 spin out of it off driver. Fast forward to now and I'm primarily gaming the Chromesoft XLS and ProV1x Left Dash. (Truth be told, the ONLY reason I don't play Left Dash exclusively is because it can be difficult to find and I play a lot of early morning rounds, when moisture is a problem. Word to the wise, Left Dash is VERY flier prone...) My spin has crept back up and if I can find something that flies a little lower and spins a little less, I think I'll have a winner.

Some baseline numbers I captured a couple weeks ago, all data using CSXLS on a Full Swing launch monitor:
Driver -- 155 ball speed, 14.1 launch, 2600 spin
7i -- 118 ball, 21.7 launch, 8000 spin (not a typo)
50* -- 89 ball, 35.2 launch, 9980 spin

Using these numbers, Ballnamic recommends AVX, Left Dash, or Bridgestone Tour BRX though CSXLS is still a 91% match.

I did my testing at the course mentioned above and was even able to meetup with @03trdblack for a simulator session so he could show me how I'm actually supposed to hit the ball... I mentioned that I have used the Vero X1 before but I have also used the Elixr once before. The X1 was so close to being perfect for me and I loved how it responded differently based on the situation, feeling firm and flying straight off driver while feeling quite soft with good control around the greens. The (prior gen) Elixr was entirely too squishy for me...  Coming into this test, I didn't know a whole lot about X2, other than it's supposed to be firmer than X1 and is a 4-piece design. I've seen where they're making the same claim about hitting it straighter due to the perimeter weighting. I didn't scientifically verify that claim with X1, but I do think there might be something to it...

Wish List:

• Get peak height under 100' on driver
• Bring down spin by ~400 rpm on driver and ~1000 on irons
• Firm feel ('clicky' doesn't bother me. RIP first-gen XLS...)
• Doesn't ride up the face on short shots
• Predictable spin around green
• Single ball lasts more than a single round (sorry, Cut Blue, I wanted to love you...)
• Other duties as assigned (that 'wow' factor, I guess? Something awesome that I wasn't expecting)

THE REVIEW

First Impressions -- 8/10

The balls arrived and even though we were promised 2 dozen, it seems the team at OnCore is aware of my ability to absolute smash a driver straight into the woods. So they sent 3 dozen. No complaints here. #KnowYourCustomer

The packaging is premium. It has the right sheen and texture to sit on the shelf next to any major brand. The box lid has the right amount of friction to create some anticipation in opening it and the sleeves are what you'd expect for a premium ball. I'm docking 1 point for the garish yellow/gold, which has nothing to do with performance. They do make a claim about it being the 'gold standard,' but the coloring is closer to baby food than gold bars, even if baby food is more valuable than the stuff they keep at Fort Knox. And minus 1 point for claiming the ball is for higher swing speeds. Sorry, there's just too much evidence that fitting by swing speed is a crap way to get the right ball for your game.

Aesthetics -- 6/10

The ball itself has absolutely no surprises for a Tour-level ball. The cover is glossy with a little 'tack' to it and the alignment stamps have been printed on the seam. Overall, if you think about the look and feel of a Titleist, TaylorMade, or Callaway, there are no surprises here. It's exactly what you'd expect. Personal preference, but I don't love the 'X' in X2. Everything else is so clean and sharp and the X feels sloppy. Minus 2 points. And this is really nit-picky, but I'm docking 1 point for the dimple pattern. I guess I'm so used to the XLS and the offset hexagons that seeing the dimples basically in parallel rows is just visually off-putting. I do like how the printing on the side of the sleeve box and the window/cut-out are aligned. That's a nice touch.

The ball is unbelievably durable. In the course of my testing, I did not scuff a single ball to the point that I would take it out of play and I had one ball last two full rounds with tons of wedge shots and multiple bunker shots. There were even times when there was a bit of white paint on my wedge face and I'd think, "welp. That was it. Time for a new one." and when I'd get to the green for inspection, it was perfectly fine. I don't mean "yeah, it's got a little scrape but it's still playable." I mean "I know I took paint off, but I can't find from where..." For $50/dozen, you are more likely to lose it before you wear it out. (Incidentally, this is exactly what happened to me. Every time I was about to take a ball out of play simply because I'd worn the 'shine' off the cover, I'd lose it.)

 

Sound & Feel (included in aesthetics score)

This is a firm, 4-piece, Tour-level ball. It has a great 'crunch' to it off the tee and while yes, it's firm, it's right in line with expectations for similar balls in the category. During my testing, I had some trouble with the sound and feel as the clubs got shorter. In my first round with the X2, en route to a -3 69, I don't think I hit a single shot solid with a club less than 8i. Everything felt harsh and clanky. Turns out it was just a poor ballstriking day with the scoring irons/wedges, but still. It wasn't a great first impression. Later rounds I'd have much better ballstriking and the short irons felt much more solid. The wedges and I never really got on the same page (more on that in the performance section) but from a sound and feel perspective, I need to deduct a point here. Both the XLS and Left Dash feel more "solid" than the X2 and I wish I had a better way to describe it. The X2 almost felt like everything inside 100 yards was skipping a rock with a glancing blow, whereas both XLS and Left Dash still feel like I'm hitting and compressing a golf ball, even if they're both pretty firm.

If you're a player that just wants everything to feel like an AVX or Duo Soft, THIS IS NOT YOUR BALL. You are going to get plenty of feedback about your contact.

The Numbers -- 15 out of 20

As mentioned, Rob and I made it out to Brookfields Indoor Golf to use their Full Swing launch monitor. We only had an hour, so we were both rushing to get enough shots AND I had played 18 earlier that day.

Needless to say, my Left Dash driver data should be taken with a grain of salt since it was tested last and my speed was dropping. Driver screenshot is first, then 55 degree wedge; OnCore X2 in cyan, Chromesoft XLS in blue, and ProV1x Left Dash in fuschia.

Basically, on a good shot, the X2 does indeed fly a little lower but it's not as low-spin as I thought. I wish I had captured some partial wedge data, but for whatever this is worth, all three of these balls are dang similar. No deductions based on the LM data.

I also pulled my ShotScope data to see if this ball made a difference in my game, since that's the only thing that really matters. Looking at January to April (below), I was clearly trending up, coming out of the slushy cold. In basically every category and measurement, my January and February numbers were going to make the X2 look like an absolute superstar.

So, just for funzies, I have constrained my analysis to mid-March to April as my pre-test data. This is when the grass started growing, the fairways started firming up, and I didn't need three layers to make it 9 holes.

First, the distance comparison, all data using p-avg. Chromesoft XLS is first, then Vero X2:

The X2 loves to be hit hard. It does not, apparently, enjoy loft. The 5i seems to be the breaking point with the flatter-faced clubs seeing distance gains (look at my 2-iron!), as I get closer to the green, I'm actually losing distance. So yes, I may be closer to the green off the tee, but I might still be hitting the same club in. I'm dropping 3 points here. This is absolutely wild to me and seeing these numbers side-by-side makes me feel better about the sheer number of times I was on course and just baffled that I came up short into the green, even on what I thought were solid shots.

Ok, but distance isn't everything. What about OTT performance? (XLS then X2)

Folks, we have a winner here. I can't say it's 100% for-sure because of the X2, but I'm hitting A TON more fairways and gaining 0.41 shots/round on tee shots. As in 12% more fairways. That's about 2 fairways/round. (And it's longer?!) If you wanted me to make a call on the claim that the perimeter weighting caused it to fly straighter, these are the data you're looking for. Definitely no deductions here.

Now let's look at Approach play, XLS then X2.

Deducting 1 point for the swing from gaining 0.17 shots to losing 0.10. Gonna go out on a limb here and say that the major cause of this is because my drives are longer and straighter, I should be getting even closer to the pin than I have been. This correlates with the distance loss I'm seeing on short/mid irons. BUT! Looking at the distribution of shots, it does appear (again) like my shots are flying a little straighter, given the left/right breakdown comparison. Deducting another point for short game for the swing from +0.21 to -0.37. Giving up a half a shot per round just wiped out the gains seen off the tee and is supremely frustrating. More on that in the next section too... (I'm not deducting points for putting. I wish I could blame the crap greens at my course on the golf ball. Our greens are always so much better when they're dormant.)

On the Course -- 10 of 20

Tee: Beast mode. Love this ball. The feel is awesome. The sound is awesome. It's fast. It flies forever and rolls out even more. It has a ridiculously great flat ball flight. In two different rounds, I actually drove it into the (same) hazard that I don't know that I've ever reached before. X2 in yellow, Left Dash in cyan:

   

If I were evaluating this ball solely on tee shot performance, it's in the bag today. Absolutely nothing about this ball that I wish were different.

 

Approach: Look, golf is a game of trade-offs, ok? And like the great philosophers Jagger and Richards noted, "you can't always get what you want." As mentioned above, Approach could really be bifurcated into "long shots" and "short shots" and here's where it gets a little tougher to make a call. Seemingly, the further away from the green, the better.

I'm deducting 2 points here for wind performance. Most of my early testing was totally calm and I thought I had found the unicorn. Then I played in some gentle but persistent 5-7 mph winds. Into the wind was coming up shorter than I would have thought and downwind was quite a bit longer than I would have thought. My last round (for testing) was very windy, gusting up near 20 mph and I was really struggling to dial it in. Salvaged a decent round, all things considered, but anytime I got the ball above the treeline, it got punished. Interestingly, this is another area where the short irons (literally) fell short. I watched shot after shot just get knocked out of the sky by the wind. In the ball's defense, it's pretty easy to keep it low, but that's not my natural game and I tend to hit some hot pulls and weak flares when I start trying to mess with the trajectory.

Deducting another 2 points for fliers. The rough is just now starting to grow up at my course, so the first several rounds really didn't have any flier opportunities. Now that we've got a little bit of rough, I've had about a shot/round that has just taken off, including a gap wedge that grew 25 yards worth of wings. That's an unexpected 22% increase in carry yardage... Not ideal.

And almost trivial, but something I want to point out, is that I have a pretty healthy in-to-out path (see numbers above) and so even my short clubs have a little fall-off draw. Not sure if it's the low spin overall or the perimeter weighting, but I really had a hard time getting used to how straight these flew. I know, I know, good problem to have. But with irons, you want need the ball to perform exactly as you expect and with some regularity I would hit a shot that should have drawn and just... didn't. Minus 1 point here. In any case, here are a couple of short irons. XLS in red, X2 in yellow.

   

 

Short Game: Struggle bus. I just could not get comfortable with this ball around the greens. In my last testing round, holes 9 and 10 are probably the best example I can give. The 9th is a par 5 that plays uphill and into a prevailing wind. I had about 65 yards to go and tried to hit a chop 55-degree. Great contact and it was... 20 yards short. I legitimately don't know what happened. No worries, let's just chip it close and tap in the birdie. Pulled a 60-degree and nipped it. I expected a relatively low flight, one hop, and grab. It launched extremely low and didn't hop at all. It landed and then ripped back off the false front. The 10th is a monster par 4 and you are celebrating if you even have a shot at the green in regulation. I flared a 7i pin-high right and had a truly terrible lie. Absolute cabbage. Tried to hack a 55-degree to just get it on the green and let it run out. Instead, it came out totally clean and flew the green. And I can't tell you how many routine pitches in the 20-40 yard range have just baffled me.

In short: I can't trust it.

Even on clean lies with very predictable, boring chips, I don't know if I'm about to get one that suddenly spins and checks hard or if it's going to run out. Out of the bunker it's much of the same. (What feel like) comparable strikes seem to react differently. If you follow the advice of "fit from green to tee," I'm afraid you'd never give X2 a chance. It really pains me, but minus 5 points here.

Putting: I'm the wrong guy to talk to about golf balls and putting. Titleist says there's no measurable difference between balls off the putter with exactly one exception: sound. Not even feel. When you 'feel' a ball is softer, what you really mean is "the cover is softer/quieter and my left ear perceives it as softer." Anyways. I don't have any complaints here, other than not liking the side stamp, but that was already addressed and deducted above. No sense in double-dipping. Yes, my putting metrics are markedly worse with the X2, but again, I think that has more to do with the 5 inches between my ears and my course's inability to cope with growing grass.

 

The Good, The Bad, The In-between -- 17/20

This ball has a lot going for it. It's a high-compression, low-launch, mid/low-spin offering. In that regard, it's basically a unicorn. Its trajectory is flatter than either the XLS or Left Dash and it's spin is basically between the two. It does a great job retaining an appropriate amount of spin at the low end of the bag. I sometimes have trouble with full wedges ripping back too hard and I really didn't experience that in my testing. While I only directly tested it against the Chromesoft XLS and ProV1x Left Dash, I'd love to see the flight/spin comparison against the AVX. It's on the opposite end of the compression spectrum, but if you're currently an AVX player looking for more ball speed, I wonder if the X2 would immediately find its way into your bag. I've tried the AVX a couple of times and the two reasons I can't game it are that I hate golf balls that feel like they have mashed potatoes at the core and I can't get comfortable with the AVX around the greens. I'd love to see the comparison inside of 100 yards between these two...

As documented above already, I had trouble really getting acclimated to the ball. With basically any other Tour-level ball, after a couple rounds with it, I've figured it out and can pretty easily game it and know what to expect. Full swings are what they are and you really only need a handful to know what's happening and then you just need a couple of partial shots from the fairway, a couple from the rough, and a couple from the bunker and you should know what the ball's going to do. With the X2, I just couldn't dial it in on partials. Additionally, also noted above, I seemed to be able to create fliers at a much more frequent clip than with the XLS. (Honestly, probably pretty similar to the Left Dash in that regard.)

I did run it through Ballnamic to see what I should compare it against. No real surprise getting AVX (#1) and Left Dash (#4) as comparisons. Surprising, however, was getting the 2023 Srixon Z-Star XV as my #2 overall match. (The new ProV1 rounded out the recommendations in the #3 spot.) Also interesting was getting validation on the two areas where I noticed some issues: wind and fliers.

According to Ballnamic, the X2 is an 84.7% match, giving up 5.1 yards on driver and 8.6 yards in the wind (the lowest Driver Wind Score of the bunch at 46!) It also had the worst Flier Prevention Score at 30 (!!) compared to Left Dash's 36 and AVX's 62. It did have a good (but not great) Full Wedge Spin score and was the highest of any of the five in Greenside Spin. This makes me wonder if the chips that grabbed hard were the ideal/designed performance and the ones that didn't were actually some kind of flier? I do play in the mornings when it's dewy...

Play it or Trade it -- 15/20

I wanted to love this ball. I truly, truly did. As a golfer trying actively to shoot a score more often than not, there was just too much variation/inconsistency for me to game it. Firm and dry conditions? Hit it too high? Need to bring down your driver flight/spin? Love a high compression ball but don't like the current offerings? This very well may be your ball. But it's not for me. I will play the rest of what I have and may do some head-to-head with the new ProV1 and may pick up some Z-Star XVs, but unless I'm playing in a scramble and/or there are no adverse weather conditions, the trade-offs are just too great. I love watching it fly off the tee, but the closer I get to the green, the less confidence I have. And I can't go for that.

 

Conclusion -- FINAL SCORE: 71/100

Could absolutely be my gamer if I weren't actively looking for ways to discount it. The sound, feel, and flight of this ball are absolutely top-notch. Huge kudos to the OnCore team for a high-performing, high-compression offering that isn't clicky or off-putting. I am eager to see what Gen 2 of this ball has to offer, especially around the greens. I would happily test the next gen of this ball as I think if they can dial in the wind and short game performance, this could be, without exaggeration, a game-changer.

I want to thank MGS yet again for the chance to review another product!  It's been a little while since I've tested but am super happy to be back in the tester pool.  I have been lucky enough to be selected to test multiple items in the past, including the 2019 Maxfli Tour balls, Ben Hogan GS53 Driver, Tour Edge EXS Driver, Snell MTB Black golf balls and the SuperSpeed Golf program.

I’ve been a decent golfer since I started playing at age 14 (now 40) and currently carry a handicap of 2.3.  I live in NC and do most of my playing in the hot and humid Southeast region.  I’m a HUGE equipment junkie which led me to building golf clubs as soon as I started playing and I’ve been a clubmaker for over 25 years.  My favorite club has always been the driver and it’s one of the strengths of my game.

Since I was a part of the Snell golf ball test and the 2019 Maxfli Tour ball test a few years ago, I feel I've got a good strategy in mind for a full test.  I've used Oncore balls in the past, starting with the Elixr and also the Vero X1.  I had some trouble with the Elixr cracking on me in a round so it left me a little unsure about Oncore as a quality brand.

The Oncore Vero X1 was a pretty good ball and I found good success with it.  I'm not usually a person that sticks with the same ball forever since there are so many things out there to test but the balls I stuck to the longest were the Maxfli Tour series but recently I've been experimenting with the Srixon XV and the Bridgestone Tour B X which was "fitted" to me by Ping's Ballnamic website.  

I always start my testing on and around the greens to see how the ball feels on putts and chip shots.  I see if pitches and chips check up compared to what I'm used to and that the provide the right level of feel that I prefer.  In order for this to become my new ball it's going to have to provide good wind performance, not feel too hard, provide good spin on irons and around the greens and not give up any distance off of the tee.  Not asking too much, right?? 

I've heard initially that the Oncore Vero X2 is supposed to play similar to the Titleist ProV1x Left Dash which is a very hard compression, high launch/low spin golf ball and I'm excited to see if that is the case or not.  I've tried the ProV1x Left Dash before and found it a little too firm for my liking and also very expensive.  The Vero X2 seems to cost almost the same which to me makes it a hard sell already in my mind, before I even hit a shot.  If the ball doesn't outperform the Titleist by leaps and bounds, why would you buy it...especially given the legendary quality of the Titleist ProV1 series of balls? 

I'm going to give the ball a very fair shake for sure BUT I will say I have some preconceived notions that it's going to have to really be something special in order to command the price of $50/dozen, especially in comparison to what else is out there at that price.  LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

Unboxing

I had a realization tonight... I've had only 3 rounds in the 60's (all 69's) and my most recent was last weekend (4/23) with a new Snell MTB Prime X that I picked up to test right before I was selected to try the Vero X2. As ironic as that was, I discovered tonight that the second round that I shot 69 was with the original Vero X1 ball that I bought when they first came out! Maybe the same performance will be found in the new X2

The Oncore Vero X2 is a perfect ball if you want to lower trajectory and overall spin but wedge spin can border on too low.  It’s firm feeling and one of the most durable balls I’ve ever used.   The lower spin will also keep the ball flying very straight.

First Impressions — (8/10)

Was very impressed that Oncore decided to send us all 3 dozen balls instead of 2 dozen.  That was a great first impression!  

When I first opened the box, I was immediately blinded by SO. MUCH. GOLD.  Like Donald Trump amounts of gold and it was very bright and shiny.

The box is as high quality as any other premium ball and I’m sure they went with the gold to grab attention on a shelf (although I’m guessing they mainly sell online so….??).  Would I have gone with a different color scheme, probably, but I really don’t care much about what the packaging of golf balls looks like.  Once I open the box and get the balls out, I pretty much throw it all away.

The back of the box speaks a lot of perimeter weighting and claims higher launch with lower spin.  I did find this ball to fly very straight and noticed the lower spin out on the course but mainly on wedge shots and chips.  I can’t say I noticed much difference overall in trajectory out on the course but I did some launch monitor testing with Greg Garner and it showed a little higher overall launch than some other balls I put head to head with it.

Aesthetics — (6/10)

As I mentioned, I don’t really care what golf ball boxes look like and am not a big fan of gold as it looks garish and tacky.  No one should be buying a golf ball based on the packaging anyways.

The Oncore logo looks good although it’s a little too large.  The side stamp is fine and I don’t love or hate it.  I usually spin golf balls in a Check-Go device and mark a line all the way around the ball so I don’t use the side stamp for putting alignment. 

The ball itself though is very high quality.  The cover is just as premium as a Titleist ProV1 and I didn’t notice any defects or strange marks in the dimples.  The urethane is soft feeling and very sticky which is something I look for in a premium ball.  If you try and rub two of the balls together, the covers stick and don’t slide across one another.  

While the cover feels soft, the ball does not.  Bouncing it off of the floor and off of the face of a wedge produces a noticeable crispy feel with a higher pitch sound than softer balls out there such as a Titleist ProV1 or Srixon Z Star.  It’s a little softer feeling to me than Titleist ProV1 Left Dash and feels similar to the Srixon Z Star XV.  It’s also got a firm feel off of the putter.  I actually prefer a firmer feel as I play a putter with an insert (Odyssey) and the harder feel helps provide feedback to my hands as to where I struck the ball on the clubface.

On the golf course, this ball has to be one of, if not the most, durable ball I’ve ever used.  I plan to eventually cut one open to see how the ball is constructed, but I end up losing the ball before I feel I have to take it out of play for wear and tear.  I played 3 rounds on a ball before finally losing it and could have kept going with it.

The Numbers — (15/20)

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to compare the Vero X2 directly to some of my favorite gamer balls (Maxfli Tour, Bridgestone Tour B X and Srixon Z Star XV) on the launch monitor because I play yellow balls and they wouldn’t allow yellow balls to be hit into the projector screens.  I did however get to test it against the Titleist ProV1x and the new Snell MTB Prime balls.

@GregGarner and I were able to meet up and test at a golf simulator here in town that I believe uses a Flightscope simulator.  I would have preferred to have used a Trackman or GCQuad as I think the Flightscope does a better job as a simulator than a launch monitor.  We saw some very strange readings from time to time and we both questioned some of the numbers.

^^^ As you can see from the wedge numbers I was getting, the machine seemed to be a little off.  I was hitting a full swing 56* sand wedge and was only averaging 4700 RPM with the Oncore ball.  The spin was slightly higher on average with the ProV1x and about the same with the Snell MTB Prime.  I know there’s no way I’m only spinning my 56* wedge 4700 RPM and don’t feel the Flightscope could be considered correct here.

^^^The driver comparisons between the balls was much closer overall but the Oncore did show around a 2* higher launch than the ProV1x and the Snell MTB Prime.  There was a shot in the averages of the Oncore ball that registered really high (4265 RPM) and I think this skewed the spin higher than it should have been.  We were only able to hit 5 shots with each ball in order to get all the shots we wanted to hit in the time we had.

On The Course — (16/20)

I’m a little torn when it comes to the on the course review.  I was able to shoot my lowest ever score with this ball but there are some things I wish it would be better at.

Off of the tee, this ball has been fantastic.  It flies very straight and feels like I get great ball speed due to the firmer compression.  It flies in my expected trajectory window and I’ve never really seen any strange or unexpected ball flights.  It isn’t the best ball I’ve played in the wind but it’s not the worst either.

Approach shots have also been acceptable and I have no complaints really.  I don’t find it overly workable which is fine with me.  I’d rather have a ball that flies straight (which this does well) and don’t really need to bend shots right or left much.  Spin seems to be average and it hits greens and holds just fine.  The only thing I’d say is I’d maybe like just a touch more spin but I’m splitting hairs.

Around the green is where I have to knock off most of the Oncore’s points.  I didn’t find it to have as much spin as I’d like and found chips and pitches would run out further than I’m used to.  That being said, I did have some strange situations where I’d hit a chip and the ball would hit and grab HARD when I expected it to roll out.  Obviously I’m not a perfect golfer but I did have this happen more than once and had a hard time trusting that the ball was going to behave the same way.  It’s easy enough to land it a bit shot and allow for this ball to roll out a little bit more on pitches but the fact that it didn’t always do that bothered me a bit.

I really enjoyed the firmer feel of this ball when putting and it gave me great feedback.  I also found it to have higher ballspeed off the putter face which allowed me to take smaller putting strokes.  I like this because I feel the smaller the stroke, the less chance there is to miss the center of the face.

The Hits and the Misses — (16/20)

Pros:

• I shot my lowest round EVER with this ball
• Firm feel
• Flies very straight
• VERY DURABLE

Cons:

• Needs more iron spin and a lot more short game spin
• Not as workable
• Expensive for a DTC ball
• Not the best in the wind

I’m going to keep playing this ball until I run out of them.  I want to see how it does once the course starts getting hot and dry this Summer to see if the lack of spin becomes an issue.  The durability is incredible and may justify the higher price as you can play them longer.  That being said, there are a lot of good balls out there that come in cheaper.

Play it or Trade it? — (15/20)

I have to say that as of now, I’m going to play it.  When testing products you have to evaluate if it will help you play your best and since I shot my career low score, the Oncore Vero X2 ball is doing that.  I want to keep the evaluation going over the Summer and see if it continues to work for me.  I’m looking forward to continually updating this thread!

Final Score — (76/100)

I don't think there will ever be a ball out there that I would fully rate 100/100.  The Oncore Vero X2 rates highly for me and I'd probably say the highest rating I'd give any ball right now would be around an 85/100.  Remove the points for the packaging (because who really cares) and give this ball just a bit more green side spin and I'd probably rate it as high as anything I've played.

First off, thanks MGS for the opportunities you provide the golfing community with independent and unbiased testing. I play out of Southwest Ohio and have been golfing for 25 years. I have been playing tournament golf for the last 8 years. I picked up the game after Happy Gilmore and Tiger Woods influenced a hockey playing northern Minnesotan to grip it and rip it. Tournament golf has got me hooked on the process. I love the process of preparing, practicing, and testing my game. Working on qualifying for my third USGA Mid-Am. I have gamed a Srixon ZStarXV and Titleist ProV1 in tournaments. Moved off of Srixon after a subpar review from MGS. I am a loyal guy as you can see by my bag of clubs. Still working the Taylormade M1 in driver and 3W. I hit the ball plenty far so I do not chase distance every year. 

I want to test this product by comparing it to my gamer, the Titleist Prov1. I am going to take this ball on all areas of the course to get some initial impressions, take it to GOLFTEC to get data on all clubs, collect data on and off the course with my Bushnell Launch pro launch monitor, and game it in a few rounds to see how I do. The product will stay in the bag if it outperforms. All-around performance is key for me. I hit a lot of wedges into par 4s so keeping the ball in play off of the tee and having a consistent ball that does not spin too much on full shots and not enough on green side shots is a priority. I am excited to test the product because I have never ventured off of major manufacturers for golf balls. I was a tester for the Topflite Gamer back in the day and that ball pleasantly surprised me for the price. I did some research on the product and I am intrigued at the higher price point for the X2 than the X1. Seems like it is higher compression and lower spinning ball. I expect that it will be challenging to move off of the ProV1. That golf ball is a stalwart in the industry and I trust the consistency based on MGS testing. Should be fun!

First Impressions (500 Words) (10 out of 10)

First impressions are good! Ball has a nice cover, nice packaging, feels good off of the putter, wedges, irons, and woods. Launches a little higher than the ProV1 and it a little firmer. The firmness is actually negated by a softer cover for shorts shots around the green. I dig the alignment aid and the aesthetics of the ball are great! Nothing really to complain about besides a more distinguishable line on the ball from where they put the cover together. Definitely “Premium Cast Urethane” cover. When OnCore says “supreme stopping power on greens with wedge shots. It features a high modulus, metal-infused mantle connected to a thin, cast urethane cover by a nano-engineered transition layer” I think that holds. I am not sure it is the longest ball, but it might be a touch more accurate with their reduced side spin claim!

 

 

Aesthetics (10 out of 10) 

The aesthetics are great as mentioned above, I like the alignment aid and the looks are of a premium ball. I did notice some more wear than I normally have on a ProV after playing a full round of golf. The durability was good, just the cover wore more than the ProV. The dimple pattern is low (318) compared to other ProV1 (388)/ProV1X (348), but similar to the TP5 (322). I think this ball is similar to a ProV1X, left dash, TP5X. Firmer feel and higher launch. I did not get a cart path burr but I did smoke a tree and the ball carried a little discoloration. Some more wear on the cover out of the bunker. Sound is good and similar to other premium balls. Maybe softer off of the putter, I use an Odyssey White Hot so I love the soft feel on the putter. Buttery soft coming off the putter and bacon sizzling spin around the green. It is a 95-compression ball similar to the ProV1X. It is a firm feeling ball on full shots.

Ball after one full round. Nothing significant to report, the cover held well. Maybe a little bit more wear than I am used to. 

 

Green side spin is great! 

 

The Numbers (17 out of 20)

The big question is how does this compare to my “gamer”. I threw this ball on the GQ4 and tested it out. Interesting results that the ball spun more across the bag, launched pretty much the same, carried a little shorter and total distance was a little lower. Ball speed was similar too. The results are it is probably a more accurate ball with more spin throughout the bag. The VEROX2 felt a little firmer than the ProV1. It is a higher compression ball so that is expected. I think the cover feels great though. Really good numbers compared to the 2021, 2023 ProV1 and the Left Dash ProV1X. For me, the VEROX2 is a little shorter through the bag but more accurate and more spin. The attached graphs show the differences.

On The Course (17 out of 20)

The overall use of the product is similar to other premium golf balls. It is not the longest ball as evidenced in the ForeSight GC Quad testing and that held true on the course. It is slightly shorter than my current ball and spins more. I really like the additional short game spin and soft cover for putting. This ball will one hop and stop with pitch shots. It might be more accurate through the bag, but negligible. The ball does stay in the air longer than what I am used to. Into the wind I had a little more trouble hitting a penetrating shot. Just means I have to adjust, take a little more club and swing easier. I was really confident in the short game shots getting this ball to check which is fun. The soft cover felt great off my Odyssey white hot putter. Soft face and soft cover is what I like. The alignment aid is great for people who do not like to draw a line. I mark my ball with a like to the alignment aid is not something I use, but the VEROX2 line is sufficient. I am pleased with this ball; it performs well throughout the bag! I think it is great for the wedge game and in, but a little shorter off of the tee for me. It is a premium ball that can compete with the major OEMs! After testing it, it did not warrant significant score changes. It is a little shorter off of the tee, but better greenside control. 

The Good, the bad, the in between (17 out of 20)

My favorite part about the ball was the cover. I really like the short game feel of the ball. It is plenty long and all of the balls seemed to pass the sniff test. No major issues when taking the balls out of the box and onto the course. I like the boxing as well. I am not a fan of seeing the seem on the ball. I am not sure if that makes a difference in performance. It does have fewer dimples than the ProV1 and Prov1X. I like the website for OnCore and for our Military community they offer their Eagle Membership with 20% off all purchases! The balls came as expected and really this is a solid brand that offers some unique customization, memberships, and bundles that the major manufacturers do not. Love supporting a smaller company and would like to try the ZEROX1 against the X2.

Play it or Trade it? (18 out of 20)

I think it is worth the $50 a box, but OnCore does offer some promotions that the buyer should take advantage of! So that is huge if a serious golfer can get a discount that they wouldn’t find from a major OEM. 20% every now and then can save a guy a lot of money if they are playing a few times a week. I would play it, but I would need more testing from my friends at MyGolfSpy ball labs to say this ball is dollar for dollar comparable to the Titleist stalwart! I switched from a Srixon ZStarXV after it performed poorly in the MyGolfSpy test. I would load up on Srixon when they had their buy 2 dozen get 1 free to start the year. After the poor testing put doubt into my mind, I switched the Titleist because I play tournaments and wouldn’t want a random bad ball. I think a golfer who plays firm and fast courses could use this ball for the added spin. Maybe someone who likes the high launch as well! I prefer the lower launching softer feeling ProV1.

Conclusion
If you are Active-Duty Military or a Veteran, join the Eagle Membership! Tremendous when companies can give back to those who gave back to their country. The ball is worth every penny for that price, it is a premium ball. It has great feel, exceptional green side spin,  and is right there with a Major OEM, Titleist. It is still trailing Titleist in some areas, but heck what other ball isn’t losing that race? This ball is a solid ball in that B+ to A- range. Not going to get to the solid A range of the Titleist ProV1, but maybe a better bang for your buck if you can snag them on a buy 2 dozen get 1 free like they are offering for Father’s Day!

The Elixr 2022 has been my ball of choice for the past year or so. I like the crisp feel and all-around performance seems very solid. Great ball for the price.
