Well, I achieved one of my goals today.

Had an awesome day of golf! It is absolutely, 100% definitely a fluke,  but I finally broke 90!!!

Finally break 80.  Shot an even 80 last year, tying my previous best round on the same course - and it wasn't a par 3 course!

2023 was my first year back playing golf full-time (outside of work scrambles).  I hadn't played regular rounds of golf in probably 15 years.  I was able to get back to an 8.7.  I was fitted (although I'm not convinced it was a proper fitting) for PXG clubs.

Goals for 2024:

Reduce handicap from 8.7 to 5.9 or lower.

Gain clubhead speed to a playing speed of 110+ (currently ~105)

Get properly fitted by former club pro at my current club (he fits for Titleist and I am scheduled for March)

Win a tournament at the club

I think that is it for now.  I really want to continue working on the mental aspect of the game.  I use Arccos to track data and love seeing how my SG changes over time.  It has really helped me be confident in my short game, which I usually play much better than my handicap.

My goals for 2024 are:

Handicap at or below 5 by EOY.  Last year started as a 15 got down to 8.  Working on all aspects of my game to make this a real possibility

Better course management: less hero shots, more accepting bad shots and not compounding them with bad follow-up shots.

Make it to match play semi-finals or finals in NCGA tournament.  Single elimination tournament last years field was 256, I got as far as round of 16, played terrible that day and my opponent was lights out!!!

120 rounds played, and get in some new courses.  I have a trip planned this summer to Jamaica, and am planning to get in 3 or 4 rounds there.

My 2024 goals:

Get to a single digit handicap. Been sitting between 11 and 12 for a while.

Spend more time practicing putting. As much fun as it is to get to the range and send balls flying, putting is the weakest part of my game by far.

Spend more time chipping. After putting, my wedge game is the 2nd worst part of my game.

Improve accuracy off the tee. I’ve improved my driving substantially but find myself in the trees or other fairways too often.

Finally, just have fun. I’m not entering tournaments so I can live with bad shots and bad rounds every so often.

Great thread all.  My local, beautiful par3 9hole course, 5minutes away opens on March23rd! I could hug myself, but enough about me, there's only time until early November to achieve:

Plan A     to fly a 185yard shot over the front bunker; hold up on the 1st hole green for a chance at par.  For just once.  That'll soften the impulse to drain my hipflask too early.

Plan B      to play one steady, simple round under 30.  No mulligans, kicking out or dropping balls from a secret pocket in more favorable lies.  That sort of stuff.

Plan C      to limit rounds of over 40 to 3.  Alright, I'll go with 5.

Plan D     to earn a realistic handicap from a Par3 that'll transfer to the 18hole tracks. A full understanding of the moon-shot calculations discussed in another thread, could easily be Plan E but it fits well here.  Also, answering 28 to handicap enquiries seems more honest than "haven't a clue, mate'.  Looks fishy; shark-like.

Plan E      finally, will depend on success of the above.  Come September it'd be nice to feel at least competent playing a famed 18hole course here on Vancouver Island.

Good luck everyone, I hope we each get to re-read our posts favorably come season's end.

Is there a realistic way to establish a Hdcp from a par 3??? I would think the variables of going from par 4s and 5s would make it impossible but I suck at math and am no golf pro so I have no clue?????

You nailed it Marlin, so many more ways for poor mid-iron play to ruin a scorecard.  Yet, doing the math .... multiplying a par72 times a par27 gives a factor of 2.6 which translates a 35 stroke into 91, a 40 into104 strokes, etc.  Surprisingly, those numbers seem to reflect the extra difficulty of 18 hole length pretty accurately - 2.6 times more opportunity for a course to defend itself.  While far from an official handicap, it does offer a 'lay-man appeal' for simple tracking of a personal improvement.

Apologies for the dry response; no humor in mathematics, only irony I'm afraid.

So for 2024 my goals first and foremost are for my family and friends to be healthy and happy throughout the year and for my body to hold up for another year without any sidelining injuries. Now I also hope to get through one more "work trip" so I can hang it up and golf and fish everyday. This is not a goal but rather a fact!!! I will get back into the single digit hdcp and am nearly there so no excuses!! Another goal is continuing to try to help someone everyday by whatever means necessary with simple acts of humanity that are effortless for me in the big picture but can be life changing for others!!! Lastly I hope to contribute to this crew of like minded golf junkies and learn a bunch along the way!! If we stop learning we stop living!!

Josh, That began a few years back actually more like 20 years ago as I caught myself whining and complaining about some totally menial issue and as I was whining about said "issue" I watched a guy with a newly amputated leg struggle to cross the road and set up with his sign that said "down on my luck and need dogfood!! Dogfood is all this guy was worried about I went out there and had to almost beg the guy to let me buy him some food. Anyway I quickly realized what I thought was a bad deal wasn't even close to the bad deal this guy was dealing with and you would have never known it talking to him. Turns out he was a vet that wound up trying to drink the night terror away and he was a diabetic and lost his leg! I over the next few years would grab him a hotel room once a week or whatever and we would grab dinner but he taught me as bad as we may think we have it there are folks who have it so bad it's inconceivable. I found that by helping when I could it kept me from facing off with my own demons in the night. Helping other human beings whether by monetary or just a little chat can bring you wealth not measured in money and remind the person that they are not being ignored or left behind.

Life is too short!  And while you and I are NOT in the same fields of work, it is important at the end of the day to let things go and move past them.  I applaud your nature to be a better person when you can.

I'm not a great golfer. My goals for this year are to get to a point where I think less about my swing and more about the course: where to aim, where to miss, how to outsmart the course architect.
