How To Regrip A Golf Club

Great idea for an article. I've been re-gripping on my own for years, and for a "mechanically challenged" goof like myself, it's surprisingly easy.

Recommendations:

  1. If removing with a knife definitely use a hook blade. Can be purchased at any hardware store/Walmart.
  2. Have a hair dryer handy for removing excess grip tape. Throw that high heat air on it and you should be able to peel it off in no time.
  3. Be generous with your grip solvent. You can buy it pretty cheap on eBay and it is better to have the grip go on easily than for you to have to push it on aggressively and cause ribs to occur.

Not meant to take away from what @GolfSpy_APH said in the article, which was phenomenal and for sure read for anyone needing to go through this themselves. Just thought I would throw in some things I have learned to help with any potential headaches that I had when hopping into the world of re-gripping.

We have another article which we would love our community to chime in on! In what we hope to be a new series on the forum and main site we will be writing about some golf building and DIY projects which have been talked about, requested and more!

This was a fun article to write and thankfully I had some extra shafts which were bent and I could regrip for photos and videos.

If you are interested in seeing more articles like this written by the MGS Forum staff let us know!

I enjoyed reading the article and would definitely enjoy more like it! It was also timely because I just started regripping my own clubs this fall. Turned out to be pretty painless. The only "trouble" I had was that I was using grips that require a certain orientation/alignment. It wasn't a big deal, but took some extra time.

One thing I always do before removing the old grip is take a sharpie and make a small dot on the shaft. You usually have an alignment indentation on the grip. Put the dot on the shaft by the indentation. This way when you install the new grip you can align it to the small dot you made. Then just wipe the dot off with the mineral spirits.

Oh wow! Thank you for the tip. I was using a strip LED light so it would shine down the middle of the shaft and I could line it up to that. I'm sure it looked ridiculous and took longer than needed, but they turned out nicely. The dot idea would be much easier and I'll remember that for the future.

Yes, I watch a couple of YouTube videos about how much of a nightmare those grips can be! Mine were Graves Golf single plane grips that have marks for where pressure points are supposed to be on the grip. So it was imperative that the alignment is correct, similar to the GP Align! It was definitely tedious, but I'm happy with the result.

The one thing you said here in point 2. Having a hair dryer to help remove the old tape, I wish I would have known that a while ago. When I first started replacing my grips in 2020 I didn’t know I could do that, my fingers were raw and had blisters on them from rubbing the tape off. Lesson learned when I got new clubs and watched a YouTube video to see if there was something else I could do to remove the tape. I was so mad at myself when they said to use one in the video I watched.

I regrip mine and wife's clubs every late February. Been doing it for the longest time. I agree, use plenty of fluid (mineral spirits), hook blade, and for me I have a heat gun for the tape. Nothing beats the feeling of doing the reegripping knowing it won't be long till I am out there again playing.

Oh, and I’d like to add that I’ve ruined a pair of shorts and a pair of pants using a hook blade, cause I’m an idiot and decided to pull it towards me while taking the old grip off. Naturally when I got to the end and broke through, went straight into my shorts and my pants causing me to get a crazy awesome hole way to close to the nether parts.

Great article.

Mark me down on the "watched a few videos and tried this" column

Once! I did it once! Didn't have a heat gun, didn't have a vice, used a carpet knife, used dish soap, Grip tape was too thick,  ruined a perfectly good grip. Cursed alot!

Ended up buying one at the local shop for $5 and install it for me (free)

I have been regripping my clubs for years. I do it about every 6 months. One time, I ran out of solvent but I had some WD-40. WD-40 works great. I have been using it for years and it works.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

I have also used 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove the bits of tape and residue. I soak a terry cloth with it (wear some latex gloves as the IPA will dry the absolute crap out of your skin), then go to town using a repetitive motion that I'm all too familiar with. A clean paper towel with more IPA is sometimes needed to clean up the stragglers that are left.

I learned something new - spraying the solvent over the grip tape from the butt end of the grip. Also I have always taken the release paper off the top end of the tape. Looks like you leave the release paper on the tape and then insert the grip?

Hi,

My additions to this would be:

  1. Using mineral spirits will stink for a couple weeks. Buy grip solvent if you dont want the smell.
  2. I mark the length of the grip and the alignment mark with masking tape on the shaft before I take the old grip off when the new grips are the same as the old.
  3. If your clubs are cold, let them warm up to room temp (my garage heated, but is only 6 degrees Celsius in winter), this will help with grip tape removal and require less heat gun work.
  4. I had some wedges where the factory tape was at least 1 inch from the end and all of these grips split from going in/out of the bag. Make sure you tape close to the length and not too short. (Or too long, you dont want tape beyond the end of the grip, its needs to be just-right 🙂)

That had me baffled, too! So, I dug down into the comment section of an older McGolf's regripping videos and someone commented that the tape dispenser he uses automatically removes the backing and wound it around a separate wheel. I've had problems with old double-sided tape not working well which allowed grips to twist. I couldn't imagine leaving the backing on and not having the same issue.

no I remove the outer layer of tape. My tape dispenser does this automatically.

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Putter - Makefield VS LH

Ball - truvis

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.

typically if using double sided grip tape (not carpet tape) results in twisting two things may have occurred. An air bubble got trapped, easily fixed with a needle or tip of an exacto knife.  2 ) the core size and shaft butt end are very different. Lastly and a bonus the grip actually sucks. this happened to me using CP2 grips where the core just would not grip after 2 seperate attempts a quick stick with a knife and some heat to dry the solvent worked.

I'm pretty sure it was #3, sucky tape! I bought new and used the same brand/style grip on the club (driver) and it's been fine ever since. Thanks!
