Popular Post fozcycle
Well, the 2021 Birdie challenge is now down to one last hole. I birdies #2 par 3 today, so #16 par 4 is the only one standing, and the year isn’t half over yet. Today, I shot a 1 over front nine 36 and a 10 over back nine 46, for an 82. I know it has to be a mental thing, I turned the corner to the back nine and just could not score. Kenny B
5 hours ago, dlow206 said: I have been talking about in my ongoing thread about how a too strong left hand grip really makes it hard for me to play decent golf and that I need to play with a more neutral grip. So what did i do for the first 16 holes today, of course, play with too strong of a grip. Was hitting some terrible shots off the tee, some of the shots I couldn't figure out how it produced the result it did. On 17, I decided to focus and use a neutral grip, and go on to stripe it off the tee, dead straight, longest drive I have ever hit on this hole. Its a par 5 and I was still 250 plus yards out, so I hit a 7 iron layup, off of a side hill in the fairway with my feet above the ball. Straight again, perfect layup. Had about 100 yards left, hit a gap wedge, slightly pulled it, but landed on the green. Two putt for par. On 18, again, neutral grip, striped again off the tee, dead center of the fairway. Hit my approach shot just short of the green. After that, my short game let me down a bit, buts its a really tricky green with a big slope. You are too young to forget your lesson that quickly!! Me, however, I figure something out, but after a nights sleep I forget it and have to relearn it all over. Before every swing... say to yourself "Neutral Grip". You're welcome. Kenny B
My wife and I played with the couple we usually play with on Sundays. My wife played from the Forward Red tees, but the other lady played with her husband and I from the Blue tees. Last week she shot 74 from the Red tees and her handicap dropped to a 5. She usually outdrives me but she is also 22 years younger!! She had one birdie but several bad holes cost her. I birdied the first two holes. Of course, I had to say: "I could break the course record theoretically." I was +6 over the next 7 holes for a 43. On the par 5 #5 hole after a good drive, I forgot how to swing a club; made double with no penalties or bunkers. The back nine was much better; one birdie and only 3 bogeys for a 37 and a round of 78. The birdie came on hole #14, a short par 4 that is drivable for many players. I don't normally try it but the tee box was up and the prevailing tailwind was maybe 15-20 mph. Any shot short is in a huge bunker or if waaay right is wet. I was in the sand. My second shot was 15 feet to carry the sand and then about 35 feet to the pin that was on a lower shelf of the green. The ball almost stopped where the green slopes down to the pin, but the wind helped it and I had a tap-in sandy birdie. cksurfdude, cnosil, NRJyzr and 5 others 6 2 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
Popular Post puttnfool
I shot a 76* today! The * is because some idiot played my ball on one hole and I didn't notice until I got to the green. I put down par + handicap for the scorecard. Chances are, I would have bogied it anyway, but the round will forever have an * by it. Had 3 birdies and only one double on the card. Hit 10 GIR and, I think, 7 fairways. Popular Post M. Parsons
I had a tournament on Saturday, shot 40/44=84, which was my lowest tournament round ever and lowest round of the year so far, and I came in 2nd for my flight. I had 7 pars, and 6 of those were saves. If it weren't for 3 three-putts on the front, it could've been lower. I had a hard time judging the speed of the green for most of the day, but that's not what lead to any of my three-putts. Popular Post ballplayer002003
I have been playing very poorly lately. The last three weeks, I've noticed that my game has been progressively getting worse and worse. I don't know why. I'm thinking it's because I've been playing with my high school team (I coach) and many of our kids have only started playing this year. So I am constantly watching bad swings and poor decisions. Anyway, my game finally tanked last week. I couldn't get a shot airborne and if I did, it was a SHANK. Yes, I said it...SHANK. I had ball marks on my hosels. How could this happen? One day after practice, I went to the range to work on my game. I must have hit 100 balls before I gave up and left in utter disgust. I was ready to quite golf. I was not having any fun and have been playing the game too long to hit the ball this bad. I text the pro at my course to see if I could get a lesson. This was my last ditch effort to save my game. This guy is such a great instructor, he told me what my problem was in ONE swing. ONE! I was squatted down too much at address. He just told me to stand tall and get my hands higher at address. When I was squatted down, I could not clear my hips out fast enough so my hands only had one place to go, which was outside with my hands staying wide open. I have to admit, I've played 9 holes standing more upright and "feeling" like I am trying to mimic how Bryson looks at address, and I am starting to hit the ball better again. I am starting to hit the sweet spot more. It's amazing how I didn't realize this, and how one little thing can make or break us in this great game. Well, more practice is needed with this new set-up but I am optimistic once again. M. NRJyzr
Had one of those "coulda shoulda" rounds yesterday.... Playing white tees with the usual crowd. I've got the newly reshafted Mizunos in the bag, and all clubs but putter have GripMaster Roo grips. Reshafted 3w, as well (good choice, as it happens). Start the round with two low stress pars. Hit PW on #3 to 10 feet, make the putt. Ironically this is one of the holes I didn't birdie last year, a 120 yd par 3. Go figure. #4, par 5 into the wind, fan the six foot birdie putt. Turns out, it was a sign, and not in a good way. For the next five holes, I developed a Roberto Duran level of feel (for the younguns, he was known as having the Hands of Stone), no short game and three separate three putts. I go from one under through 4 to a +5 front nine. Cue the bad words. Back nine, I start by chipping in for birdie. Suddenly, my feel mostly returns, and while I don't make any more birds, I wind up shooting +2 on the back for a 77 (par 35 back side). Of course, my first thought was the "what if" regarding holes 5 thru 9. LOL Golf. A four letter word that was used because the others were already taken... Popular Post ejgaudette
Got out for my early morning round on Saturday. started off with a great driver on the first, wedge to pin high easy par. Overall feeling good. Then hole 3 got very luck on the 3rd with the tree putting me back in the fairway, hit a knockdown wedge to long and hit my first three put in a long time, which I really try to avoid as lately I have been unable to get myself up and down lately (darn practice). On the first part 5 hit a great drive, almost 280, to leave a hybrid in which I just missed right, but finally got my first up and down for birdie. Got to 9 with only one more bogey. Hit my tee short dangerously close to water, and a bit in the weeds. Muscle out a 9 iron up the hill to 7 feet and drain the birdie. So that is even on the front, and cue the nerves. Back nine was much more pedestrian pulling my first 3 iron shots resulting in 2 bogeys. Found some form again and make 3 straight pars. Whew ok holding on as +2 would be my best round ever. Then cue the driver losing it. Hit two big slices on 16 and 17. I worked hard on both to pitch back to about 90 and hit two good approaches, but the regression to the mean putting gets me missing and 8' and a longer one on the last roles. Finish with a solid up and down on 18 to shoot 75. Of course wish I had managed the irons better on the back, but hey saved some on the front so it all evens out. Either way a great round. Now I need to play a different course so I can try scoring somewhere else. Vegan_Golfer_PNW, edingc, M. PankaGolf
Played a practice round with irons only. I enjoy hitting different irons and different yardages into greens. Doesnt affect scoring too much either to be honest just sharpens up the longer irons and encourages more shot shaping. Played well just over handicap but smiled most of the day. Putter even performed. M. Parsons, Grand Stranded, sirchunksalot and 5 others 8 Quote "C'mon be good"
sp0rtsfan86
Played my 9 hole Saturday morning around without anyone. First off the tee in the morning -- but got maybe 5 hours of sleep when I needed 10 because of the weekday. Ended up carding a 45 despite feeling completely undepowered. Managed to get the second birdie of the year on 8 but took an awful bogey on 9. My game has completely turned around now that I have confidence in my putter. Even my chipping and pitching is serviceable after a year in the wilderness. If it gets any better, I may be back to 4-5 years ago when I was playing about as well as I ever have. sirchunksalot, MattF, Vegan_Golfer_PNW and 4 others 7 Quote Driver: Epic Flash 12 Degree Wood: GBB 3 Wood Hybrid: Razr 4 hybriid stiff stock shaft. Popular Post GolfSpy BOS
Played OK yesterday with @Lacassem and the boys. It's always a little interesting while trying to teach them the game and play, but we had a good time. Shot a +4 37 with one birdie, 3 bogeys, and an unfortunate double on 9! I drove the ball much better than the last time I played and both driving penalties on 8 and 9 were good drives. On 8 I pushed the ball a little right and ran out of room sooner than I thought I would, or another group picked up my ball as that area runs adjacent to a tee box (the likely scenario unfortunately). My drive on 9 I would take 10 times out of 10. I hit a high beautiful baby draw and took a hard bounce when I needed a baby fade. I didn't think the edge was in range there so I'm ok with a well struck ball that ends in a bad place. Now I know that area is within reach when I play again. It also probably landed 5ish yards into the rough, so it wasn't off-line either. My mid-range wedges (50-100 yards) felt great, and I stuck a few in tight. My chips and pitches were generally bad. but its early in the season and my feel isn't quite there yet. Putting was OK, 15 putts overall with three 1 putts. On two of my other GIR I left the putt within inches of going in for the birdie. The greens were slower than what I normally play, and it showed as most putts were ending up short of target. Overall was glad to get out and hit some decent balls in the long-game, particularly my 298 yard drive on the first swing of the day. That always feels good! edingc, bens197, StrokerAce and 9 others 12 Quote Epic Max LS 10.5 - Motore X F3 6X | Speedzone 5-wood - Ventus Blue 8S | TSi3 20* Hybrid - KBS Proto 85S SMS Pro 4-PW - Steelfiber i110S | MG3 Raw Black 50.09, 54.11, 58.11 - DG TI S200 ER2B | Pro V1x | NX9 Slope | Jones Trouper R | CaddyLite EZ v8
Popular Post Berg Ryman
So, do you all want to know why my only real competitive round of the year so far went on Saturday as I attempted to qualify for the local big amateur tournament for Central New York? Well, even if you don't, you're going to learn today. Saturday afternoon I descended on Cortland Country Club for a 2:19 tee time for the qualifier for the AIM Championship. I played the front side at Cortland numerous times in High School, but that was 15 years ago I think at last check. Played off the blues from around 6350. The round starts with a Par 5, OB right to farm land, the world to your left. I aimed down the left and hit a pretty straight drive, ends up right behind a tree on the left. Punch out sideways, get on the green in 5 so not my finest hour. Then as you know I've recently bought a new putter, the SIK Flo-C. I haven't three putted in 53 holes so what do I do? 4 putt for a NINE. Yup, great opening quad there dummy. Funny story, I follow that up with a birdie on the second. Honestly, the front side was ok when you forget I made a 9. I shot 8 over for the side, a 44. I did make another double on a par 5, again a drive behind a tree leading to a punch out. The back side started with a couple of pars, a rough 3 putt double on a par 3 which kind of killed the momentum I was working through but I stood on the last tee +13 for the round. I was under no illusions of making the cut, which looked like it was going to be in the +9 to +11 range depending on what other people did. What I wasn't expecting was falling like a rock down the leaderboard. I hit a drive which lead me on a bad downhill lie, and then tried a punch fade to get under a branch in a scramble. Now, here's where I tell you that between the 17th and 18th fairway is the road to take to get back to the clubhouse and the parking lot. Well, my shot overfades, hits the roads multiple time and ends up by the 6th hole, past the clubhouse. Turns out... that's OB, so I go pick up my ball, drop it back where I hit my shot, and just begin the struggle to finish... with yet again another NINE. 46 on the back, 90 for the round. This is where you wonder, but Berg, surely that doesn't tell the whole story. Well, let's look at the stats for hole scores. 1 birdie, 7 pars, 6 bogeys. That's right I was 5 over on 14 of the holes. Sure, the two doubles weren't great, one for a tough break, one due to a lipout for bogey, but man, those nines. When you're 9 over on two holes it's tough regardless. However, there were a lot of positives from this round in my eyes. I was striking my irons exceptionally well and the change to add a waggle to the pre-shot routine to work on adding some hinge to the swing was fruitful. It's just golf, bad things happen at bad times. It's all a learning experience. I look forward to taking the positives through the rest of 2021 and hopefully getting my game in a good enough shape for 2022 to take yet another crack at qualifying. I know I can do it, just got to keep those big numbers away. Also, tagging @joen in this post. He played well in an earlier group, missed the cut by 1 shot. Felt worse for him than me to be honest. Missing by one is never fun. cksurfdude, M. And it never stopped raining, damn, even with rain gear, I ended up with wet socks and underwear. On several holes, you had to decide between holding on to your umbrella or to your clubs, but not both. There was a hole where my driver went about 100 yards into the wind lol Ended up shooting 100... honestly not bad for the weather conditions. So this is my scorecard from Saturday under brutal conditions: And this is the scorecard from today, same course combination A+B from the same set of tees. It was slightly windy, but sunny. analyticandrew
Hottest day and worst round of the year yesterday. I was all over the place. Was trying out a new driver shaft and I abandoned it after 9. I keep hitting the ball on the toe and I need some range work (all I’ve been doing is playing mostly and putting at home). Also played a new course and it was a hike. Lots about the day was just weird. The mental side of my game was just nonexistent as well... But it was still a lot of fun. Rickp
Monday morning Exec 9. Greens were recently punched so putting was an adventure and led to 6 over and lost a ball. Well maybe not lost I didn’t look for it as it wasn’t far from a Gator nest and my Momma didn’t raise me to go digging thru something that might kill my Ole arse. It was my turn to have the SLOWEST, WORST player in Fl in our 4some. Man it was brutal. At one point he tried to play my ball after he hit his 2nd shot in the water. He “forgot” that he was playing a white “MG” ball and mine was a yellow ProV1x. He also drove thru a marked off “ground under repair” area, beautiful.
