What/How Did You Practice Today?

Yesterday I started working on building out my wedge matrix with the new Pings that I got in the off-season. This was a tough spot in my first round of the year expectedly given the new loft set up. Working on adjusting both gripping up and down the club and how wide my feet are to help control swing length. It feels like it is working well. Moving form the bottom of the grip, to the middle, to the end of the grip with my 50 produced nice 10 yard gaps from 50, 60, and 70. It will be very helpful to have multiple trajectories at these yardages.

Hit the range again to dial in the long game, so Driver down to 5 iron. Still just working on getting the cobwebs out of the system so not really thinking about too much. However one note I saw while on the driver was I saw a dramatic difference in apex height versus my old LTD Pro. I don’t know if I am just catching it too high on the face or if that is just the way my LTDx LS should normally be feeling.

I snuck away again between work and dinner yesterday to work on my iron striking.  (This seems to be happening a lot lately.)  This drill really worked for me, along with putting a penny about four inches behind the ball and avoiding hitting it.  I saw immediate distance and accuracy gains with good strikes, and much more rollout too.  Will try taking this to the course over the weekend.   So simple - and it works on the range for sure.

Merely aiming (i.e., focusing my eye) ahead of the ball made a giant difference.

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

I practiced short game today. Spent time with wedges from 5-15 yards off the green. Then sand trap for a bit. Then went to the driving range and hit balls at 30, 50, 70 and 90 yards. In total spent maybe 90 minutes.

Took the day off today because I have maxed out my vacation so I went to MGS to do a Players Distance Most Wanted session.    Then stayed after for a couple of hours and works on various shots.  Tried to get some distances for my partial wedges and work on sequencing full shots.   When I came home and did some more work on my putting.

Continue to do my 3 times a week morning visit to the practice facility near me and work on my 60 and 56 wedges from tight lies, getting that bounce feel . I know am in a good grove when I chip one or 2 in with either club and am within tap in distance.
Then work on my putting, 15 putts from 3-8ft from north, south, east and west.  No 3 putts, if I do I have to start over. Work on my stroke make sure is not jabby and focusing on my alignment, I have the tendency to miss on the right side and its more due to alignment, can't trust my lying eyes.🤣

keep it up! thats dedication

Hit the range first to focus on my mishits. Noticed I was getting too long in backswing and extending way too early. Focused on really shortening backswing and putting a little bit of weight shift into front foot to stop the sway.

Finished on the Green. I played a little game with myself. I would spin a tee, chip towards that hole from the rough, then try to one putt. Did this for about 50 chips. Was a fun way to switch it up.

Hit the range to try out my new JumboMax Ultralite grip on my driver. Then I went over to the chipping range and tried out a new 60 degree SM6 Vokey wedge I picked up.

I used my Rapsodo today for the first time since August last year and the software has improved but I’ve got to learn how it works 😆, practice was ok 👍 but hitting off a water logged matt was not fun 🤩 but needed. I’m learning how to hit my mizuno mp type ll driver with the Bassara shaft with a swingweight C9 but it’s not right, I’m going to add some more lead tape to get to D 1-2 and hopefully 🙏 it’s better but my irons are going well so not all bad…

I practiced tempo and lag with my birdie balls. Hit ~40 with my 56 degree and the same with my 6 iron. Focusing on slowing up the backswing and making sure I fully hinge at the top. Shockingly, it makes an incredible difference. Who’d have thought?

I’m pretty happy with how I hit the balls. Of course, hit some bad ones, but I’d say 70 of the 80 flew as intended and generally on target. The other 10ish easily diagnosed as mechanical issues. Encouraging!

I’ve been slowly working on my home set-up. About as DIY as it gets but perfect for using my r10. Only takes about 5 minutes to get everything setup and is perfect for when the Michigan weather isn’t cooperating or evening practice seasions

I’ve been considering getting a R10 but have read a lot of dicey reviews. How is accuracy for you? Do you need to use the special made golf balls or can you get good results with regular balls?

Is it perfect? No, but for the price I have been really happy. I pay for the Garmin monthly membership ($9/month I think?). I also have an iPhone so I have the free 5 courses from e6. I have found e6 to be more accurate and consistent on numbers. When using the Garmin range or home tee hero, I have found the distance to be a little short. I generally either crank up the temp/humidity/altitude to compensate or treat it like I’m playing a cold morning round and play a club longer. I have tried the Rct balls yet but most people I’ve talked to say they are game changers just another expense.

If you use at the range it is more accurate. The most inconsistent measurement I have found is the side spin, especially with woods. Overall, I got it for $500 off 2nd swing about 6 months ago, then have a couple hundred more into my set-up. All-in-all under 1,000 for everything and that doesn’t even buy you other high end options. My wife and friends have loved it too even though they aren’t as diehard golfers as me.

One other note, I hit off the fiberbuilt flight deck indoors and absolutely love it. Held up incredibly well and no broken clubs or pain hitting off it, even on nights where I’ve taken hundreds of swings. I may throw and unofficial review up for it too bc it’s such a great value.

Not much in life is perfect 🤩 I have the same attitude with my Rapsodo it’s good enough for me but in fact with bugger all facilities where I live it’s there when I want it 👌

Decided to practice with drivers an F-woods as I've too many of them and time to cull the mob, best driver is still my Mizuno and F-wood is a M6 3wood with a Nickent shaft that I hit best so it's in the bag for now...

Not only did I hit it well and the straightest it looks good to my eye on the ground whereas the others look closed which I hate, I was warming to my task hitting my Mizuno driver really well I think because I've been practicing hard for my Tourney...

Spent the last hour or so in the garage hitting into the net.  Started with wedges trying to take partial swings and also partial speeds.  Slowing my swing down is really difficult for me; it gets me all disjointed.  Thinking about it, I've got two swing speeds: 100% and 110%.  Which... y'know, says some things about me.

The partial swings also got me to realize that given the bump and run thread I started the other day, I really ought to work on that shot.  Most of my "bump and runs" this year have been much closer to putts than chips.  That's alright with the grass still dormant but probably won't fly (so to speak) once it starts growing again.

So the last half hour was spent aiming at a target about ten or twelve feet away with different clubs and different trajectories.  Soon I'll have to take it outside and see the rollouts, but the results were pretty promising.

It's interesting how different golfers have different philosophies when it comes to how fast we swing.

When I got my second set of irons I couldn't hit them for anything. I had to learn various speeds to hit a 5 wood anywhere from 125-170 just because of the massive lack of confidence I had. That has been almost 30 years ago and is still something that had stuck with me, just not to the same degree.

I discovered the last round I played that I wasn't giving it enough speed, especially with driver and tried to remember to let it rip. I had one of the best driving days I've had in a long time. Hopefully I'll continue to do that going forward and honestly I've been trying to motivate myself to get back on speed training.

Putting practice, positive reinforcement provided by Johnny Lawrence's favorite beer 🍺 Make all 10 take a swig. Going to do 4 sets of 10. If I make more than 90% 37/40 or more) I get to watch another episode of Cobra Kai as well.

Putting practice, positive reinforcement provided by Johnny Lawrence's favorite beer 🍺 Make all 10 take a swig. Going to do 4 sets of 10. If I make more than 90% 37/40 or more) I get to watch another episode of Cobra Kai as well.

20230424_024037.jpg

Update: Had to make 10/10 on the last rack to make my goal of 37. Good pressure putting simulation from 10 different lengths/angles I'd expect to make on course.

Great job on finishing out strong and overcoming the pressure of having to make the last 10!

I like the idea of setting goals during practice or coming up with ways to simulate the pressure that's put on us at the course.

Hopefully you doing this will pay off on the course.

I hit 2 large buckets of balls with just a 52* wedge. I have been reading a lot about statistics to lower my handicap and this is the space, where I can improve the most.

For the first bucket, I tried to hit every shot shape while moving the ball in all positions in my stance to get the shots that I wanted. I used the second bucket for just one target and zoned in on it. Working on feel and making sure that I could repeat the stroke. We'll see this week how that worked.

I have been trying to do much of the same. My current Handicap is 13 but with what arccos is telling me my Breakdown handicap for my 100-150 Yard Approaches is like 20. Good luck to you in your improvements.

I have been following Scott Fawcett who helped Will Zalatoris with stats. He has a program called decade golf which helps with decision making.

I have not signed up for it yet, but just learning. I may break down and see more about it

I will definitely be looking into that. My current goal is to get into single digits. And I feel that the approach game is the key to doing that this season.

A few of the people on the forum have done the fundamentals subscription.    If you want to try the program you can get a free trail without the need to provide a credit card.   Will give a little deeper insight that isn’t in the freely available videos on YouTube.   I thought it was great information and learned a lot about course management.
