I have the CURE for the “distance” problem.

This just popped in my head this morning...

 

The cure is simple!!! Reverse psychology!!

 

A 1 wood or driver should just be called a 0 wood.

 

3 wood a 2 wood

 

And a 18 degree 3 iron is a 2 iron!!

 

36 degree “8” iron is a 7 iron.

 

That way no one will be amazed when they hit their “7” (5 iron) 200 yards.

 

Faldo - “Unbelievable! He just hit his zero wood 350 yards!”

I really don't see a 'problem' with hitting the ball a long way.

Now - if you hit it a long way and you're accurate as hell then that's a problem.

But, as the recent Ryder Cup has proven, courses can be designed to reward accuracy and penalize long-but-inaccurate.

As to the distance problem - how about much narrow fairways and tighter approaches to the green.

Its my personal observation that the distance problem incurred by many can be solved by playing the proper tees appropriate to their skills.
