What's your Weakness ?

mine - 30 to 40 yard pitches. I don't know why but I end up chickening out and we know what happens when you fail to commit.

Right now, tee shots.   Generally it is 30-75 yard pitches especially out of deep rough.  Biggest problem is inconsistency.

Weakness?  It's some combination of my decrepit body and my failing brain, but I can't seem to figure out the percentages yet.

 

When I could put together a decent round, however, downhill lies were really hard, and my putting was never good.

My weakness is too fast in transition which causes Timon issues, and usually I hit a 40 yard pull hook that starts right and just seems to go further and further right. I need better Tempo.

The tee ball on par4s/5s. I'm less than 50% accuracy over the last two summers. When I'm 50% or greater, I shoot in the 70s. It's my number one flaw...

Seriously though, using a 9 or 8 iron, it is much easier to chip off hard pan than with a wedge. I learned that from an older guy that I used to play in a group with. He was always able to chip hem really good when he was on hard pan, then I would either blade or chunk it, he said use a 9 iron, and I've never had an issue since.

Consistency, I am the type of golfer that can hit greats shots half the time and terrible ones the other half. If my terrible shots were a little better I could be much better.

 

Consistency aside, I would say my handicap breakdown would be like this,

Driving-19

Irons-0

Chipping-12

Putting-0

Clearly I just need to hit more fairways!!!!!!!

What I do is just tell myself, take the club back, hit it on the back of the ball, and then follow through.

Driver. Lack of distance causing me to overswing.

 

Although I have made tremendous improvements in the last week. I will have my new to me driver set up next week so I hope this gives me some more distance. If that happens, perhaps I can fight the temptation to overswing.

 

I played a money game with the long hitters from my group this evening, from the back tees. I knew going in that I would give up some distance, but we had 1 1/2 inches of rain this morning, so I gave up 40-50 yards. My iron play and wedges and putting kept me in it, and I only lost $9, but I fell into the trap of overswinging several times that hurt me.

Driver and 3w....played 2 and 3h most of the summmer off the tee. Swing struggles with too quuck in the backswing.

Making smart decisions is by far and away my biggest weakness.

 

I tend to want to play "hero" shots that get me into more trouble. Or I'll pull driver on a hole that would be better suited by a Heavenwood or 4i. Or I'll try to pitch it close to the hole from a tight lie rather than playing a bump and run.

Short game, more so getting it closer with the approach or chip shots.

 

I struggle with wedges so I have resorted to using a lot of 8 iron bump and runs vs chipping. My lofty goal is to try and get the ball within a 10/12 foot radius from the flag on all chip shots and not 50' leading to a likely 3 putt.

Honestly, my misses are just too big. Even with the irons. I have a draw miss with my 5 iron off the tee that can get up to 30-45 yards left of target...most courses I play thats just not acceptable, it leads to a penalty. Same with driver. I hit it a real long way most of the time, but my misses are always OB penalties. I need to figure out how the pro's "BIG" misses are still only 15-20 yds offline with 300+ yard drives. 

 

Also chipping was a huge problem too this week, but it changes every week..who knows..

Approach shots from anything outside 100-yds are my killer. I have the occasional divot-maker that goes where I want it, but generally destroy many good tee-shots by mucking up my approaches.

The thing you need to think about is that you can putt better than a pro. There generally isn't any physical limitation that prevents you from making more putts. What is stopping you from putting better?

Simple lack of practice for me, but I also stink at getting my approaches close so I have a lot of 3-putts.

.. Tee shots

.. Bunker shots

.. approach shots (any distance within 150)

 

Still have a lot of trouble with any ball-below-the-feet lies...

 

Putting needs to improve, too.

 

..and maintaining good focus (ie. mental game)...

Is it possible for a strength to also be a weakness? If it is I'd have to say driver. If my driver is on then I can set myself in good position but I can also screw myself up pretty good when it isn't. Live by the tee die by the tee I suppose.
