I get so angry with myself if I make a crappy shot! What are good coping methods, if not funny stories of friends losing their cool while golfing?

When you reach my age, especially if you've had a health problem that threatened your ability to even play, knowing that you are playing and playing on the green side of the grass can be a soothing factor.

Breathe. Golf is full of crappy shots, just gotta forget about your bad ones and focus on the one at hand.

 

As far as a story, I was playing a scramble with a few friends and one guy, who is fairly good, got into a bit of a pickle. Hit his driver to the right side of the fairway, behind some trees. Tried to punch it out two, maybe three times and hit trees every time. He then proceeds to launch his iron into the tree, breaking it in half. I was pretty funny, couldn't help but laugh.

Right after you hit a crappie shot take a deep breath, and forget it.

If you get upset it just snow balls on you.

Before you know it, your whole day is crappie.

In keeping with your thoughts, some people see problems where others see opportunities to succeed.   After a bad shot, just think about the opportunity that you have given yourself to succeed over adversity.    I have often said--darn, have I given myself one heck of a major opportunity here.

Just remember most folks are not as good as they think they are. Sooner or later the golf monster is gonna bite ya arse so don't ever think you're too good to have a sore butt. Just hang in there, drink ya a cold beer or deep swallow of air and move on to the next shot.

It's human nature to get angry when things don't go right. "Golf is hard" is a very true statement. If you don't get upset with yourself once in a while, you probably don't take it seriously enough to improve.

 

I gave up getting pissed off at golf. That doesn't mean I don't feel aggravated or ever get mad at myself. I just tell myself what ole gray said... I'm not that good. Why let a bad shot or, a few bad shots ruin a perfectly nice day on the golf course? Sometimes ya just gotta role with it. There will be other days when things go better than you expected. GOLF IS HARD!... Beer is good!

I watched a guy burry a ball with his driver 1" in front of his tee and 2" deep. When I hit a bad shot. I think of let's call him Steve, and laugh it off.

There was an older guy in his late 70s at the Muni where I grew up. Very nice, mild mannered. He would get so mad at himself when he missed a short putt that he would storm around in a circle screaming obscenities and punching himself in the head. For like 30 seconds. One time his scalp was so bruised that he couldn't wear a hat the next day. It was a true pleasure to be in the group behind old Max Russell. We would always putt out quickly when his group was on a par ౩ and race to the next tee so we didn't miss anything.

A buddy of mine (who no longer plays) was a notorious club tosser. After slicing his drive - again, he hurled his driver and it landed in a tree about 30 feet up. He looks at me and says "toss your driver up there and knock it out of the tree"

uh, no. He was truly upset with me for not throwing my driver in the tree.

I just try to remember that you just have to regroup and not let it spoil your round. You have to move on

Ha, I wouldn't throw my club up there either. He had 13 tries from his own bag before he would need to ask for further assistance, right?

I played with a guy that was upset with a hit and tossed his club toward the cart--but just a little short so as not to hit it. Well, it landed on the grip kind of funny and bounced up in the air and hit the cart anyway and broke the shaft. That got our whole group laughing as he just stood trying to figure out how that just happened. Incidentally it put him in a better mood the rest of the round...or it might have been the alcohol, either way.

I don't get overly upset over bad shots anymore. I enjoy my limited time on the course too much.

 

Years ago a friend of mine hit a poor shot and slammed his club against his bag. In doing so he broke the shaft if his driver that was in the bag. We laughed it off but I remember thinking it just isn't worth it.

Consider the process and the effort, not the result. Everyone will hit bad shots, including pros.

 

If you gave it your best and the shot didn't turn out, then just accept it and move on.

Yeah nah...a bit lot stronger than that.

I view golf as a game where you have to manage your mistakes and take advantage of good breaks/good shots. Your score is reflected by how well or poor you react to every shot. When you hit a poor shot welcome the challenge of the next shot and know usually one good shot per hole will get you no worse than bogie and most of the time a par.

Golf is a game of misses. It happens and happens a lot!

 

In my opinion, golfers try to compare the shots they hit to what they see on tv. PGA tour players miss all the time but, the television stations don't show that. They only show the good shots.

 

What I do after a bad shot is to challenge myself to not let it hurt me on the next shot. To get up and down or to challenge myself to have a good look at par.

We're not PGA pro's so hit your next shot like the last one didnt happen instead of trying to use it as a make up shot and then duffing that one as well, and now you're laying 3, 200 out vs laying 3 25 out. When I listen I seem to card less 8's

I didn't hit the ball with my "A" game yesterday however I stayed cool and pulled out a 1st place in our weekly blitz.  I only had one hole where I didn't score at least one point.  The way I did it was one shot at a time while planning on putting the next shot in the best possible position to save a point.  It worked!   I need to manage my game more often like that...
