Laptops - What's the best?

I've been a Dell fan forever. We had them when I worked for the Air Force so It carried over to personal use at home. I have ventured out to HP & I tried an Asus however I always come back to Dell.

 

What works best for you?

I have HP at work but have generally gone for dell at home. Based on my current usage, I would probably be fine with a tablet since I mostly am on the internet and writing a few documents. I think having a laptops or home computer is becoming less and less necessary with what tablets are capable of.

I'm an Apple fan. I've had 2 MacBooks over the last 10 years, and both of them are still going strong. You pay a bit extra up front, but the long term serviceability of them is amazing. I bought my first one in 2007. It's now 11 years old, not as fast as the newer one, but still does everything I need it to.

Yea I was looking at some Apple tablets and boy are they pricey!

Yes they are, but I still remember when getting the latest PC it was over $2k. But from a processing perspective applications are being hosted so you don't have to install them thus there is less need for disk space and applications really only contain the features that you need so there is less bloat.

 

And there are so many accessories for tablets like keyboards and display drivers the need for computers is becoming less and less.

 

It is like the commercial for the tablet, can't remember which one, that the kid is doing all kinds of stuff and her neighbor walks out and asks what she is doing on her computer. The kid responds with what's a computer?

My dad just got a surface he loves it. Been a laptop guy for ever. If you get an Apple product don't skip the AppleCare it's worth the $ if you have problems with it.

I use a Dell laptop in the office, and use Dell, and HP laptops at home. My desktops at home are all HP workstations (I just don't have time to build my own desktops like I use to). Dell has a pretty high reliability rate as do HP's. I tend to stay away from Acer laptops (bad past experiences with them).

I like the portability aspect of tablets, but still prefer a real keyboard over virtual ones.

Can get real keyboard for tablets. Heck most small laptops now operate as a tablet or laptop based on how it is opened. My office computer works this way.

That is one of the Apple advantages. Their products seems to hold up better over the long run and I think that has more to with the OS and customized hardware designed for the OS rather than a windows OS trying to work with everything under the sun.

I will say this though, tablets don't burn your leg when you've been on them for too long. Laptops put out some heat (I have an i7 based laptop with a large drive that I primarily use).

It's a mac pro being replaced by the new imac. The left screen is for a gaming PC. Rest are 5k connected to the grey imac pro.

No arguments from me on this, but I find it easier using an actual laptop versus a tablet with an attached keyboard. I prefer larger 15.6" screens for the work I do too.

The thing I would be looking at is having one with a big enough screen & keyboard to be comparable to my Dell.  I have heard the Apple's run much cooler than conventional laptops.

Another vote for Dell, I have two new ones, one is my work one and we have one at home.  Run both on a docking station, to allow full screen and keyboards.   But the portability is nice when I'm doing my basketball related stuff at games.

When I was working HP all the way.

Now after 6 years retired we have Asus laptop (doesn't have sleep problems) that wife uses, HP laptop that I haven't used in 2 years, Tablet that gets very little use. My main computer... Apple 7 iPhone. I do everything except print from it.

Kids wanted a gaming rig so I get them a Toshiba...and it's been dynamite...and kids being kids they do stupid things all the time with it.

 

Check the GPU in the machine...it makes a difference whether you're gaming or not.

I worked for HP for almost 10 years so I'm partial to them.  Still an HP, but 90% of my computer time now is with a Chromebook on the couch.  I was a desktop guy forever and still prefer to do any real "work" on there, but the chromebook is perfect for couch surfing and general light use.

I have two Mac books (an air and a pro), a Dell for work and an iPad for work. All seem to work well for now but would rather use a Mac for work and Dell for personal use.

Hey! I got the same mousepads... both at home and in my office. I think they are 10 years old and still going strong!

 

I personally prefer desktops over laptops, but if it's mobility you need, I'll stick with HP and Dell. Experimented once with Lenovo and that was a shitty experience.
