PGA Tour 2023 - Fedex St Jude Championship

G'day Golfers,

Here we are, we're at the tail end of the season and the start of the Fedex Cup Playoffs.

This will be a shorter introduction to the thread from me as I'm currently on holiday with limited reception. 

The PGA Tour heads back to Memphis, Tennessee, for the FedEx St. Jude Championship for the start of the FedExCup Playoffs with only the top 70 in the Fedex cup standings eligible to tee it up, which is actually down from 125 players in previous years.

 

This will be cut down to the top 50 next for the BMW Championship, more on that next week.

During the regular season a winner of a PGA Tour event received 500 FedExCup points, however, this week and next the points are quadrupled with the winner receiving 2000 points. Would you rather win 4 regular season events or one Fedex Cup playoff? Crazy stuff!

Justin Thomas narrowly missed the playoffs finishing at No. 71 on the FedExCup Regular Season standings. He had a birdie attempt on the 72nd hole last week which was about as close as possible without going in. He had a chip shot from off the green which bonked off the flagstick, he missed the playoffs by one stroke. It was the first time he’s missed the Playoffs in his eight-year Tour career.

Another big name to miss the playoffs is Adam Scott leaving only Matt Kuchar as the only man to make the FedExCup Playoffs every year since they began in 2007.

 

Fedex St Jude is played at TPC Southwind, a par 70, 7,243 yard course. The course has plenty of lakes, streams, and ponds so expect a few wet balls this weekend.

Going to be a big week for the Fantasy league... Make or break for a bunch of teams and one bad week will end the season.

Pretty excited about it.  I'll get up, put on the TV, my daughter will grab her plastic golf clubs and try to copy literally every golfer hitting.  Love to see it! 

 

Routing for Xander!  Love the way he plays and just how relaxed he looks from beginning to end.

The course sets up pretty well for Morikawa and Burns, so I'd expect both of them to be somewhere in the conversation on Sunday

I am hoping Rahm comes out with a bit of fire as he finished off the Open with. Never know if it will actually happen, but would be great to see. Also would love to see Wyndham continue his good play this season.

Is really like to see Homa have a good week and win the whole thing in a couple weeks. He’s had a really good year but has been inconsistent to say the least. Wyndham Clark is my dark horse. Being an Oregon fan I’d like to see him pull off a little magic one more time this year.

Hoping Tommy Fleetwood has a good weekend feel he’s been playing decently consistent over the last few tournaments just hoping he can close it out this time.

Sort like a dumpster fire, but I suspect he will have a very different game tomorrow.

Great start by Spieth... some fantastic shots and no mistakes.

I'm wondering how Tom Kim's "pants" don't qualify as shorts. Ridiculous!  Look like the "pedal pushers" my mom used to wear.

Love to see Spieth come out strong in the first round today. He's always been one of my favorite players and he's been in a bit of a slump recently. Tom Kim is also someone to look out for this week. Even in capri pants he's one of the most consistent players on tour! I'm headed to the BMW Championship next week so just hoping for a solid lineup in the top 50 lol

It has been fun to watch the first two days! Today's coverage, watching feature group Rahm, Scheffler, McIlory, they keep talking how Scottie & Rory changed putters earlier this week. Does anyone know what putter they are using this weekend at St. Jude Championship? I haven't been able to catch what the putter is yet.

Lucas Glover projected #3... say what??   Talk about finding your mojo and the right putter at the right time. That broomstick/pendulum style has my attention.

Why is it that we only get to see the same groups as yesterday?  I understand that they are featuring the 1, 2,3 players, but on every hole and every shot??  Fleetwood and Hadwin are tied for 2nd; I saw one shot from Fleetwood, and if they showed any Hadwin shots, I must have missed them.  Instead we get to see Rahm slog it around... again.

It is because of the main stream saved for cable. It came on at 2pm on Golf Channel when most were close to done. The feature groups are more live.

Heat Index forecasted to reach 109F .  This may become more of a climate stress test as a final round of golf. Looks like Tom Kim is digging the fact that everyone was talking about his calves.  Why do I have this feeling this will soon become the rage .  Much as I love the tour traditions, I can see where these conditions might spark interest in allowing (dare I say it) LIV policy on playing attire.

Good question.  Had someone mentioned his name and Ryder Cup in the same sentence, only 3 months ago, they'd have been suspected of sniffing glue .  ZJ's picks has becoming increasingly more difficult over the past month.
