How'd you play?

Yesterday I played in a pick-your-pin 2-man scramble tournament with one of my friends. Each green had two pin placements. One Pin placement was an easier pin the other a harder pin. The scoring was a modified Stableford based on the difficulty of the pins and relative to your score. 

The event took place at Mistwood Golf Club in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. This is a course that I've been wanting to play for quite some time, but it's typically expensive and a long commute from where I'm located in the city.

There were definitely a combination of good and bad shots throughout the day. It helped that it was a scramble and we were able to pick each other up when the other didn't have a great shot. I had a few really good drives, and a few that I wouldn't mind forgetting.

One hole in particular comes to mind, where my partner cut a corner on a dogleg Par 5 over water (think hole 6 at Bay Hill) and I hit a 7-iron to six feet for eagle.

Overall, it was a great, low-stress way to kickoff the golf season. I'm looking forward to playing a lot this year and continuing to improve my consistency and shoot lower scores.

Got in a quick 9 earlier. Fired off a -1 but should've been -3 but that's alright! Got home and loaded the round to shot scope and started needing out on data. Looks like I need to really start putting some heat into my swings. I have my distances down, but most approaches are short which isn't a bad thing at my home course. 

On another note, I'm liking the mindset balls from Bridgestone, it really is getting me to keep my thoughts still when I see that little logo.

The bridgestone balls have been really helpful for me as somewhat of a beginner, they have been forgiving and I have been able to see compression within my irons when using them

Played 9 this afternoon and was driving the ball well. If I keep my tempo the ball flies. The second I get a little quick, it goes back to the negative AOA.

That's the tough part, keeping the tempo. I always had a Fred Couples style swing growing up, but as I've aged (40 now) I've lost rotation and therefore distance because I wasn't swinging hard. Over the past couple years I started trying to do more golf specific workouts to get the speed and strength back. I still have to catch myself getting wonky on tempo since my "hurry up" swing usually is a pull.

Shot 79 with a double on the par 5 #5 hole… Hey! That’s better than the triple I took on that hole yesterday.  Wind was a little less today; maybe 15-20 mph dead into it.  

A 41/38 round but not a good ball striking day; only hit 4 GIR so +7 is not too bad. Had one birdie on the par 5 #13 hole.  Lots of par saves with two of them being sand saves.  Getting used to the Dan Grieve "3 Releases" and it’s paying off using my 54º.  Used it a lot today where I have always used my 60º in the past.  

BIL arrived today, so we will be playing again tomorrow; third round in a row and I’m dragging!!

It has been a constant work in progress. I'm doing some specific drills at home to help with that as well and just trying to create the habit.

Had a tee time for 2:00PM today and got to the course in plenty of time to see that due to a frost delay this morning, they were running a little over an hour behind. 

Decided that since it was about 50, but also very windy we would hang around and go when it was our turn.

Sad part was it was packed, and a lot of "first round of the season" players ahead of us.

We finished 18 holes in just over 4 1/4 hours, after taking 2 3/4 hours to play just the front.

It got colder and the wind gusts increased to about 30mph, so a lot of them left after 9, and we were able to play the back at a fairly quick pace.

The practice I put in yesterday did not amount to a lot of GIR, but short game was decent so not a big issue.

Greens were not rolled or cut, so putting on them was slow and bumpy. I didn't want to change my stroke just for today in an attempt to force them to the hole.

Not bad for first full round outdoors in a while but I am looking to improve upon my iron play going forward.

As I mentioned on my other post, I played my first 18 hole round in about 6 months. The site was Chambers Bay! Probably not the best place to play your first round of the year but ultimately went really well. Shot an 83 with 7 three putts. The day was perfect and it was such a fun course. Had a caddie with the group which just made the experience all that much better.

Not my best round of the year but I was pleased with how I turned it around on the back 9. Started out rough with three three-putts in the first 7 holes and then a double bogey on 8. My first double of the season. I was striking the ball well but didn't have any feel with the flatstick. After leaving my birdie on 9 sitting right on the edge of the lip, I felt like I finally have my putting groove back. Played the last 10 holes -1 and finish +6. Not my worst round and in the end it felt good to fight through a rut and come out playing top notch. I was really close to being -4 in the last 10 holes. Now, to carry this over to my round tomorrow.

 Played my first official 9 of 2024 today and shot a 49. All in all, I can't say that I am surprised or upset with the score. I took about a month off from swinging a club which in hindsight was probably a mistake as I was in a pretty good place with iron striking. A couple practice sessions over the weekend and then today on the range and course, I hit a good 99% of full iron swings off the hosel. And some not even on the face, lol. 

I was pretty good off the tee with a long drive of 275. Didn't hit a ton of fairways but also didn't put myself into too much trouble and only had one drive OB that was smashed but faded too much, so one penalty stroke over the 9 holes. Also had zero three putts, but back to back triples on 13 and 14, followed by a par on the par 3 15th and three straight doubles to end the round. 

Around the greens with partial wedges I was better than normal, hitting some really good 60* wedges close to the pin for two tap in pars and another that gave me a shot at par but left just short. 

I am going to get a few range sessions in and try to get back to some fundamental swing thoughts with irons to see if I can get that worked out and go from there. It's frustrating because I was in a good place with my swing and iron striking, but I can get back to it and once I do, that 49 easily becomes a low 40s round. If I can't work through it on my own I'll schedule a lesson with our pro who always has a way of helping me get things worked out. 

Did also end up carting it today as they had them open for use and I was trying to play relatively quickly to get back to work, so no walk this time around but soon will plan to walk with the Ghost. The 14 wall full individual dividers made pulling clubs a dream.

I was invited to play the West Course at Bear Creek. The others decided to play from the blue tees. I'm happy to say I might have played one of my best rounds. I shot a 93 while playing from the blues on a par 72 course with a slope rating of 137. The practice is definitely paying off!

Played again today and it was eerily similar to yesterday. +5 through my first 8 holes then -2 through my last 10. I’m real close to breaking through and breaking 70 again. Let’s get the VCT season 3 up and running!

The bag is a showstopper for sure! 

It was truly so bad that I couldn't even really get frustrated lol. Like on 16 (par 5), I hit a decent drive into a strong headwind so didn't get a ton of distance, hit a nice hybrid into the same wind so was sitting about 100 from the pin. That's usually a smooth 52* for me and that thing went further left than it did down range  but then on a partial 60* I had no problems, flush contact onto the green. Just wild right now lol.

Normally I don't have heel side misses with any clubs let alone irons, so I'm just getting into a weird position one way or another. Could be path, could be getting a bit stuck, takeaway might be getting too inside. I'm sure it'll work out. And if not, our head pro is a really good instructor and is also a lefty so that's a big plus as he can show me things from the left handed side and visual learning helps me a ton.

Played 2 over with a birdie and a couple bogeys, but for not having played since December I was really happy. Course was in good shape and just enjoyed getting out and playing!

Another 18 today at Green Tree GC, I once again shot a 97. The whole day kind of felt like Deja Vu. Driving was good and again 10/14 on the fairways. My approach and chipping were both better and I worked in some decent 5h hits, but my putting was really bad. They let me walk and I believe that is why my approach was better, more time spent walking to the ball and thinking about my shots. 

Can't say that I'm ecstatic but I will take another break 100 day and continue to work on improving my game from here.

Congrats on breaking 100 again @Michael.Sandoval33 - keep up the great work!  I agree on walking - it allows you to process / relax between each shot and much prefer it.

I have dialed in this Newton shaft in my Callaway AI Smoke TD. We played our Monday Money game and I came to play. I broke my own course record! Shot 65, 34/31! I hit every par 5 in two and just missed eagle each time. However, no stress birdies. Then birdied two par 3’s and one par 4. This could have been a really low round. Clean card with no bogies!

Yea I know I road your play in the VCT! I have been hitting and tweaking the Newton and Callaway ai smoke TD. I think I have it dialed in correctly. More importantly the irons were on fire today. Today was a great day partner!

Played a very mushy 18 yesterday morning with @MaxEntropy and two other buddies. It was a course I play several times a year, and we had a lot of rain, even some snow, and heavy frost this week. So it was CPO, with a 30 minute frost delay. As it was a sub-par day I didn't keep score, but I hit some really nice shots, especially the driver, and felt like I played the front 9 pretty well with quite a few pars. Things did not go as well on the back, as I had at least 2, maybe 3, doubles. Also, the whole course really slowed down on the back and it took nearly 3 hours to finish up that 9, 4:45 total time on course + the delay. Still typical for early Ohio golf, and I only lost 1 ball to the conditions. Just great to be back at it.

Yesterday I did as good as I could expect.  Had a couple really great birdie opportunities that I flushed away down the drain. (Not In A good way) but the DB did it's job very well.

Some of the best drives I've shot yet too. Was pretty consistent on those. Tried to use the course layout to my advantage, and got lucky on a few as well, where it would draw left a little bit, kick off a hillside and push back to the fairway.

Still struggling on long approaches though.

I'm more than satisfied with my round.
