Did You Reach Your Golfing Goal(s) This Season?

Recommended Posts

..or, I guess let's go by Calendar Year for all the year-round sunshine people :)

So... Did you set any golf goals for yourself at the start of this season/year? Maybe things like...

• Handicap - eg. get to ___

• ‎Scoring Milestone - eg. break ___

• ‎Learn a New Shot - eg. draw, fade, low stinger, ___

• ‎Practice more .. or, Play more!

• ‎Walk more

• ‎Play in Competition for the first time .. or win, or place really well, in either a new to you or a regular tournament

• ‎Hit a Hole In One or make an Eagle

• ‎Get a previously misbehaving club working properly

• ‎Or ___???

Or maybe more social aspects such as...

• ‎Make new golf buddy/-ies

• ‎Introduce someone new to the game

• ‎Help out in charity outings

• ‎Or ___???

Or maybe travel-related - eg. you finally went and played at....

• St. Andrews, The Old Course

• ‎Bandon Dunes

• ‎some exotic foreign locale (maybe one that's not so well-known)

• ‎some famous designer's course(s)

• ‎Or ___???

And, so...

** How'd ya do?

** What are ya gonna follow-up with next season/year?

Every year I make a goal to travel and meet more MGS members.  Somehow that didn't happen this year.  So, this next year I will make the same goal.  Hope to see y'all because I am running out of years.

As for the mental side, I'm at the most Zen than I've been. My scoring has obviously been at my peak as well.

While I wish that I have my distance from a few years ago or better yet from 14 years ago, I'm quite content with what I have going now.

If my progress would freeze at this point I'd be happy with my game for the rest of my life.

The one ultimate goal I probably going to miss this year is my daughter didn't pick up the game yet. That's most likely going to happen before the end of next year.

Goal 1: Win league championship - check!

Goal 2: Break 40 for 9 - check! (4 times)

Goal 3: Break 80 - not yet but came close (81)

Goal 4: Avg in the 80s - check! (none > 90)

Goal 5: Win work scramble - check!

Bonus Goal 1: Gain confidence inside 100y - big-time check!

Bonus Goal 2: Make a shot from +100y - not yet. Closest was 3ft

Bonus Goal 3: Play golf with an MGS member - double check! (ddryan and CG2)

This was a fun exercise. I'd definitely say those is the best season I've had yet and it leaves me with a lot of promise for the future. I'll have to think a bit about next year's goals. I'm close to meeting my current goals but just don't get to play often enough (darn work and kids ). Still time to knock those out.

Not at all. For 1 health and 1 personal reason, I barely played and when I did, it was terrible.

As Browns fans say, there's always next year.

Great thread - thanks for posting it!

My season was odd - played a lot, but didn't practice nearly enough. Set a new career low (73 - twice), but my 100 yard and in game was more off than on. I hit some serious bombs with the driver, but my overall game off the tee was frustrating and very Scott Norwood-like (wide right). Handicap was as low as 5.1, and as high as 6.8. Consistency continues to be elusive...

Maybe new clubs are the answer.... ;-)

I did not reach my goals of breaking 90 this year. The weather we had this summer kinda made it hard to play as much as I wanted. I did play pretty well when I got to.

Also got the putter figured out so I will be ready to attack the courses next year even better

I too did not hit my goals. I didn't play or practice nearly enough. Turns out having 2 kids IS harder than 1. Who would have thought?! Next year I'll give it another go!

It's like, at least twice as hard!!!!!

Last summer was my first summer with 2 kids and I BARELY played. This summer, my youngest was a little older and my wife was more independent with them so I got to play a little more.

As Browns fans say, there's always next year.

Due to health concerns, I didn't get to play as often as I would have liked.   But this year was better than last year when my doctor told me to stay off the course for several months.  On extremely hot days, I just kept my butt on the recliner and didn't bother to go to the course.   As a result, my golfing goals have become more philosophical than specific.  That is, while playing better is still a factor, just being on the course and enjoying time with my buds has assumed even greater importance.   So while I played less and didn't score better, I did meet my goals.   Specifically,  I became more thankful that I was playing and enjoying the social aspects of the game and I finished each round on the green side of the grass.

I don't set to many goals, but my lowest hcp this season is 4.4 so that's improving, I shot a 74 at a difficult course, I shot 33 on the back nine, I also had my first Hole in One this season. I was fortunate enough to be able to play Pinehurst#2 this season. It was a good year, I am looking forward to continuing to play well, and learn.

One goal for next season will be to not always go for it, the last couple rounds I have had some iffy lies after not so good swings, I cost myself a bunch of strokes in 2 rounds by trying to be the hero, so instead of taking the big number out of play, I brought it into play with the decision. So I need to focus on mentally playing a smart game and makin better choices.

1) Lower my handicap to >7.5. (Currently 6.7)

2) Make 50+ birdies. (Stopped counting, but probably at around 80.)

3) Shoot 10 sub-80 rounds. (Probably had around 20.)

4) Play 5 new private clubs. (I think I played 5 or 6, and I get to play another new one next week.)

I would say I reached my goals for this year. I am consistently shooting under 100. I really want to be under a bogey golfer, but that is a pretty lofty goal since this is only my second year. My driver and putter are working pretty well for me, but my iron play is really inconsistent. My dilemma is to take some lessons and play fewer rounds or keep banging it out on the range and get in a game each week.

Up until now, I primarily been playing alone so that I can concentrate on improving my game. I am finally getting confident enough to start playing as a group and enjoying the fellowship of other golfers.

My next goals are to drop my handicap to

I'm hoping for all of this. My wife is decent with letting me go play. I just need consistency though. She also has a new job now which will allow her to pick the kids up from the sitter which will allow me to hopefully practice some after work a couple days.

I'll tell you what, lunch-time practice is invaluable if you can swing it.

Lessons!!  If you just keep banging on the range, all you are doing is engraining a swing that is likely flawed.  The longer you do that, the harder it will be to fix.  I get it.  We all want to play, but if you are not happy with your play today, you won't be happy with it tomorrow until you make a change.

Did not achieve my goals. Goal was to break 70. Closest was 73. My short game has been horrible and I have too many blowup holes. As a result my handicap is slowly going in the wrong direction with most of my scores falling in that 79-83 range.

This is a great attitude!!  I have also found that I play better when I can focus on appreciating things during a round rather than my play on the course.  My best rounds have come when I have had the most fun and enjoy the company.

Did not set concrete goals last year- although I am always working to bring down my index (low of 10.6 this year, currently at 11.6) and more consistency off the tee.

Did have one, my club Member-Guest tournament- and we won our flight again this year, but lost in the playoff (12 flights, each flight winner team has a playoff against all other teams, strokes included, until one team wins).  Over the past four years, we (my brother and I as team mates) have taken second in the flight (2014); won the rain shortened Tourney (2015); and won our flight but lost in the playoffs both last year and this year.  We want to win again next year- so that is a goal!

Will soon be heading to Pinehurst for our 21st annual tournament- much luck and some skill involved in winning that, and a February trip to Dominican Republic (Casa de Campo) where again, sometimes luck (we do a blind draw A & B players for a team Calcutta auction each year) is as important as consistent playing, but it is lots of fun!

Would like to win at least in one of the two...and own the team who wins the other!!!
