Eye Sight

Lately I’ve had a lot of difficulty tracking my longer shots.  It’s extremely frustrating. Because I have glaucoma my eyesight is tested 3 times a year. I was 20/20 with my glasses on at my last appointment.

I have an eye appointment in March.

I honestly think this is more a perception issue than an actual eyesight one.

Has anyone ever encountered this before and if so how did you combat it?

This is something I’ve fought since moving to progressives. Trying to track the ball I need to be careful of moving my head back my eyes. Otherwise if the balls line of sight is in a different lens zone I can lose it.

Same here, especially at first.  It also took a bit getting use to them at address. @revkev, some of the guys I play with here in Yuma have complained about no longer being able to track balls - especially mine as they say I hit them to far and too high 🤣.  I'm not aware of any having been diagnosed with Glaucoma but that might be a conversation to have with your eye doc.  I'm still able to track the flights of most balls I and others hit but do find it more difficult under certain light conditions. It may also just be something most of us will deal with as we age.

Thanks guys - I've had progressives forever and not had a problem until the past 6 months.  I can track other people's shots so long as I'm standing behind them, even the pros at a tour event or the mini tour guys whom I get to play with.

I will certainly be asking my eye doctor when I see him next month.  Even though my prescription hasn't changed I'm wondering if the coating on the lenses, that produces darkening when it's bright out, hasn't run a bit - these lenses are at least 3 years old.

This is timely for me Rev, and you may have seen me reference it in another thread.

But I have noticed the inablity to see the ball land much beyond 200 yards.  I have had 20/20 corrected vision on my last several visits, but about 20/200 uncorrcted for what ti's worth.  I have been wearing progressive lens for almot 20 years.

On my most recent optomitrist visit, I was at 20/25 corrected so that tracks with my diminishing ability to see the shots all the way down range.   And in addition I have developed Cataracts that are bad enough he wants me to see an opthomologist to have the discussion if I need cataract surgery.

Also I have been wearing a pair of Single Vison sunglasses the last couple rounds and I do think my mid range eyesight is fine and the clors and greens are much more true, but really no help in the distance vision.

Welcome to getting older. I've been wearing progressives for several years and with each year it seems to get tougher to see my drives especially when I'm hitting late in the afternoon into a setting sun . My last prescription I had the additional coatings but still no luck. I rely on my playing partners to track my drives,, however, when I'm playing alone, I'll use a colored ball and that seems to help.

I switched to the colored ball for this reason and it had worked up until now.  I changed the shaft in my driver and was able to track every shot on the range yesterday.  This continues to lead me to believe that it's a perception issue - when the ball came out in the window that I expected - my launch angle  with driver yesterday averaged 14.2 down from nearly 16, I could see it.

Rev, you upped your swing speed and you are not supposed to be hitting the ball that far... for your age!  🤣  I don't wear glasses; I used to for distance, but I hate wearing them and I passed my last driver's license eye exam without them.

It doesn't really matter that you can't see the ball anyway; just hit and walk/drive down the middle of the fairway.  😃

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I have perfect distance vision (corrected) and when the weather conditions are just "right" there are times I struggle to track the ball, especially when it is not coming out of the expected window and have to hope my partners saw it. Much of last year I used TP5x Pix and I think it was worse. Prior to that I had been using yellow balls and will be going back to yellow this year.

I had 20:15 vision until I was almost 40 yo. Since my mid 40's I can't play golf without glasses, and I'm convinced it has negatively affected my ball striking. I could never wear sunglasses playing golf, and I can't play with progressives either - so I have a set of "readers" specifically to focus on the ball at address. That means I can't see things closer or further as well. Last year after a couple months of unusually poor ballstriking, I realized it was time to go from 1.25 to 1.50 correction for golf. I have seriously considered lasik for no other reason than to restore my enjoyment of golf...🙁 Glasses aren't that big a bother for anything else in life.

At my Stealth fitting we found that I was launching the ball too high with too much spin with the autoflex shaft in my driver - look for that shaft to go on sale soon - once we close on our refi - I don't need money appearing in my account over the next two weeks. 🙂

At any rate I put the Ventus back in the SIM2 and I have been able to track my drivers, at least on the range, again.  I got the stealth yesterday and likewise was able to track those drives.  The launch window is clearly a key for me - even when I don't pick the ball up off the clubface, I am able to pick it up down range because it is in the window that I'm expecting again.  We will see what happens on the course tomorrow after church.  It's not as much fun to play when you can't see the ball as it is when you can, IMO.

Ugh. My brother has terrible vision, so I usually help spot his drive.

He’ll hit it and I’ll say, “It went left off the fairway.”

And then he’ll say, “I thought it went right.”

Trouble is, I’ve also been noticing that since switching to progressives I’m getting worse at spotting shots. He hits with yellow or green balls, I hit with white balls, and I swear I think mine are easier to find.

Update to this post. I had that appointment  with the ophthalmologist on cataracts.

Yep he said they are severe and only going to get worse.  Also to add insult to injury the new lens that will provide me the best result is not covered by surgery.  So it’ll cost about 3K out of pocket.

I can only assume these new lens will have a bionic homing device that will lock me onto the target so every putt inside 25 feet will go in, and I’ll no longer need a range finder as the exact distance and club to hit will display in my eyes as soon as I lock on the flag😬😬

Anyway, surgery is set for 4 days after the Regional MGS outing.  So I’ll still need a spotter that weekend!!

Make sure to get the lenses that have gps, so you download and overlay putt breaks on greens.

Man this surgery can’t come soon enough.  You know how once a car starts breaking down it only gets worse. Seems like that’s the case for my eyes. Yesterday In a tournament I could barely see any ball I hit land.  The worst was a 105 yard par 3.  I felt I hit my PW a bit heavy and came up short on the fringe.  A couple said nice shot, but didn’t pay much attention to that.  Get to the green and it was about 12 feet behind the pin!

wow! That’s getting pretty bad. I don’t think I saw any of my drives land fortunately they were all pretty damn straight so as long as I looked in the middle of the fairway I figured I’d find the right one sooner or later.  I litteraly checked the marking of every ball before I hit to make sure it was mine.
