JUST ARRIVED! - Cobra S2

Recommended Posts

  • SPY VIP

These arrived along with Cobra's Pro CB as part of our upcoming forged iron review. Comparatively, I think they might have the most offset of any of the forged irons we've received thus far, and the graphics are more modern that the Pro CBs. Still, these are very nice looking clubs (as one expects with a forged iron). They've got Nippon NS Pro 1130 shafts in them.

the face looks super closed for a forged iron even tho they are cb's

That just has to be the angle that the pic was taken. No club face on any iron I ever seen is that closed EVER! Unless you manipulate it yourself.

Look similar to my SZs from the topline - very thick. Not sure I'd bother upgrading to these just for the forged aspect. Buttery feel will always take 2nd place to 'getting it up in the air' :D

I've owned these since last December (2009). Let me clear up a couple points.

#1. the top line is NOT huge at all, if anything it's very mild for a cavity back

#2. the "closed face" mentioned is definitely an effect of the way the photo was taken

#3. one of the reasons I chose these is because the sole is so minimal compared to most other cavity backs I had looked at. When I tested these, I compared and hit them side by side with the AP2s. The S2's performed the same for me, if not better, with a much nicer price tag...very sexy clubs. I have to say though, the other day I did start to have a bit of buyer's remorse when I saw these B)

Thanks for the clarifications.

Be strong, Bedell! Or at least, maybe look into a trade-in program :)

No joke! I absolutely am in love with the feel of the S2s, and it would take a hell of a lot to get me to part with them. However, I fell in love with the looks of those S3 CBs as soon as I saw them. If I were to hit them and the feel is comparable to the S2s, I'd have to consider an upgrade if I could get $400 for my lightly used set of S2s B)

I have hit these and they feel ok but launch a little high for a "player" cb. Top line was a little thick for my taste, but quite acceptable. They do look very pretty, but performance wise they were not anything too special. Although a direct comparison is perhaps not totally applicable i would rate the mizuno mx 300's a better all round forgiving players cb.

Cobra S2 9.5 with Aldila Voodoo reg.

Sonartec SS 3.5 14* with Fuji tour platform.

TM V-Steel 18* 5 wood with stock reax stiff shaft.

Sonartec HB-001 21* hybrid with graphite design stiff.

4-pw KZG Evolution irons with Rifle 5.0 Flighted.

TM rac gap wedge 52/8 with DG wedge flex.

Mizuno MPT 10 56* sw with DG wedge flex.

Knockoff 2 ball putter.

ProV1 or Bridgestone 330RX.

You're definitely correct on point #2. I took the picture at an extremely awkward angle. As far as the topline goes, while I'm not sure HUGE is the right word, when compared to other forged cavity backs, the S2 is either the thickest, or 2nd thickest of the lot we're currently testing. When compared to the average cavity back (particularly in the GI space), I'd agree with your assessment (smaller than average). As with anything else, it's all relative I suppose, and forged appears to be the operative word.
