I played 9 holes after work with a couple of friends at Bear Trace golf course in Harrison, TN.

It's a beautiful state park course and one that I have not traditionally played well the times I've been there. I'm happy to report nothing had changed in that regard.

I shot 59 after starting out par, bogey, double. We played the back since they are doing some tree trimming on the course and had the front closed this week. My best shot came on the par putt on 10, I sank a 22 footer. It all went downhill after that.

I can't complain, I was hitting driver good and only lost 2 balls. Unfortunately, it was two balls on the tee shot on the par 3 14th. It's a forced carry over a part of the lake and I hit two bad shots into the mud.

1000006985-01.jpeg.4a1d4a8acb4a084ba67d2fff4f18ab1a.jpeg

My short game improved a bit from my last round, but I still hit a few bad ones that penalized me. I was harshly reminded of how bad of a bunker player I was when I got in one and hit over the green into another one. I was able to get out of that one then proceeded to 4 putt the hole. At least I avoided this one.

1000006983-01.jpeg.2bde1b76580620c9ec3cfa6a307a1528.jpeg

I had a good time, though. It was great to be back in a course hitting some balls and hanging with friends. We even saw some deer!

It's early in the season and I'm hoping this is the start of a good season.

Sunshine, blue skies and enjoying yourself out on a course in February should make this 9-holes a moment to remember.

Glad that you were able to get out and get a round in this early, and it will only get better as the golf season moves forward with warmer weather, and drier conditions.

Did a late afternoon round today. I rummaged through my collection of golf balls and pulled out a sleeve of TaylorMade Penta 5 golf balls. These came out in 2012 as a five piece golf ball. Roughly three dozen have been sitting around in my closet for quite some time.

I was shocked with the performance. I’m not one to spin the ball back but these would spin back hard. I hit center of the green and had two almost spin back off the green and a third one did. Crazy what a ball can do. Drives were really good and long. But anything other than wedges and the driver I lost distance on. Not the balls fault, I just don’t generate enough speed to compress the ball enough.

But once I got used to the ball, it was fun for the round. Just a little unpredictable. I had to get used to hitting past the pin where normally I hit in front of the pin and get a one hop and stop.
Overall the weather was perfect and my game was intact. I was one under through 13 holes and ran into a log jam of people so I called it a day and headed in.
Looking forward to my new golf shoes showing up at the house tomorrow. Friday they will get a tour of the course.

wow, that is a fun thing to do with those golf balls...

We were able to get out this afternoon for 10 holes.  Mid 40's, sunny but windy isn't too bad for mid February.  6 pars, 2 bogeys & 2 birdies resulted in an even par round score from the shorter winter tee set up.  The driver was working well, iron shots were flighted like I wanted in the wind and the yardage control on the wedge shots was pretty good.  I am real happy with the state of the game at this point in the year.

The only down side is how hard it is to justify continuing the winter time graphite shaft experiment for my irons.  The PX LZ steel in the Mizunos & KBS 120 steel in the Edison wedges have been throwing darts at the target.  I had a couple approach shots with the 9i and 8i end up within 3'.  The only missed green was a slightly long wedge on a back pin that ended up just off the fringe.

I was hoping to see some increase in swing speed from a lighter graphite shaft give about a club less into the greens.  But I may use some common sense and put that thought on hold while these irons are feeling so good.  Then again.......  😂

Does impact on colder/firmer ground affect the steel vs graphite shaft performance?

I am not sure about that.  Our ground is currently not frozen and with the recent rain / snow melt it isn't firm at this point.  Today I was able to take a normal small, shallow divot very easily with the steel and on the few practice shots I hit with a graphite i felt no difference in the impact or turf interaction.

I was a joy to be able to get out in such beautiful conditions yesterday, we normally don't have 60+ degree days in February that often. I was talking to my wife after getting home and was positive about my game, telling her I was playing good with the exception of a couple of holes. I just had a lot of fun getting to play with my buddies for the first time this year.

We made it out this past Sunday to our local 9 before the storms hit again in SoCal.  So I made improvements off the tee, pretty big about staying in the fairways but....my 2nd and or 3rd shots are not connecting 🥲.  I will be focusing on hitting at grass ranges now, I feel hitting my irons off the mats are not transitioning to the course.  I have found some local spots to hit chip shots as well as those 80-130 yards shots I have duffed, shanked or come up short.  Still enjoyed spending quality time with my brothers and getting a cool 45 degrees walk in haha.

Hey spy’s…

had a real fun day on the course today, we organized two groups of 4, and decided to take the net score on each hole of the lowest golfer and do match play against the other group!!

so if 2 or more of the team stroked on a hole and the low capped didn’t stroke you could decide whether or not you wanted to grind for that hole.

it was low stress and really fun!! We ended up all even on the 18 holes so we all had to buy our own beer!!

lookinh forward to doing it again next Thursday

Well,   DF2.1 does not like slow greens...  Or much more likely... This guy is a bad putter in slow greens.   Woodley's greens also continue to perplex me with their flat yet also somehow still sloped weird break surfaces.  Oh well.

44/42 86 from the tips at Woodley with (5) 3-putt bogeys.  Ugh.  Lag putting was very bad until the end.  I also missed Multiple 5 footers.  38 putts total.  Definitely not my best showing.  The good news was that I was solid off the tee, my driver feels workable for the first time in history, and I was mostly decent on approach.   9/18 GIR.   Short game was decent too even if I converted zero up and downs.

Side note:  I'm now feeling so solid with my 4 hybrid that I'm mulling being one the people that plays a 5 hybrid and only 6/PW in irons.   😀😜.

Initially a few of us were going to make an eighty mile jaunt to play in another charity event( Best Ball )…. But we were informed last week that they have redone or at least changed the yardage of  their tees… A few of the AAA’s are rather adamant about not playing anything longer than 6000 yards. So, none of us aged ones signed up to play. Played our own track today. Played better than Thursday, which had been the best round of the week until today.

Was on the struggle bus big time today, shot 106 that felt like 200. Even so, the day wasn't a total loss; course was pretty empty so I was able to play in 3 1/2 hours. Took advantage of no one being behind me to hit a few extra balls on my nemesis par 3 and take some extra putts in a futile attempt to get my speed right. By the back 9 I was getting locked in with my 5 iron and was hitting it 170-190.

I'm concentrating on taking the club back inside but I'm still figuring out a way to come through the ball outside in. The other adjustments I've made to my setup have my coming down on the ball and taking divots like you're supposed to and clearly t's time for me to take a series of lessons, get some professional advice and figure out a sustainable golf swing.

All I can say, is that I am very glad I had my tee time at 1:20 instead of later. I say this because I got my round finished right at 5:00pm. There was a group coming off at the same time packing up their vehicle that went out at 2:00pm. Three hours for them to play 9! I would have absolutely lost my mind. Apparently the course was letting groups of 5 go out there and let's just say those groups were not moving things along.

Having said that, new course to me and I'm not quite sure how to take it. I honestly felt pretty frustrated while on the course. More of a links style and it was windy, so I was having a tough time getting my distances right, especially into the wind. Getting that out of the way, when I finished the round and tallied the score, I legitimately shouldn't complain at all. Finished out with a 78 for my second best score ever, and had my first eagle thanks to a 22 yard pitch that found the cup. As expected, the 50 degree Indi wedge came to the rescue. It wasn't a pretty round, but I guess at the end of the day the scorecard doesn't care what the trip looked like.

Played a 9 hole with my wife at the Sunbury course. The heavy rains have meant that the 18 hole is waterlogged and the 9 hole has some boggy bits in unexpected places. The par 4 5th featured an approach shot that landed on the green. You have to look hard for the white Mizuno as the yellow Callaway dominates the picture - it was my wife's approach shot. Sadly, having landed on the green in regulation, I then proceeded to three-putt.

On Friday, I played solo from our senior tees.  On the par 5 hole #1, I chipped in for eagle from the fringe.  Hole #2 is a short, drivable par 4 and I chipped in again for eagle from the fringe.  Two holes and 4 under par.  Something I had never done before, having two eagles in one round.  I made the turn at -2 and birdied the par 5 10th hole.  Hole #11 is a short, easy par 4 with water in front of the green.  A hybrid off the tee left me 61 yards from the pin, with wind at my back.  I decided to play the shot at 55 yards and hope the wind didn't push it too far.  I thought I made good contact but the ball hit short and went in the water.  Not to be deterred, I dropped another ball and had the same results.  I carded a snowman 8 and gave back my strokes under par.  My ending score was a 76, but I was still excited about starting with 2 eagles.

Rough one today. Carded a 94 , which a year ago probably woulda been a 120 so there’s that. Bad drives ended up 2 fairways over and ones that looked good from the tee box ended up in tricky lies with no hope in going for the green. Fairways, hybrids, and irons weren’t bad but my wedge game was atrocious. If I was within 100 yards of the hole it was a war to get in the green. Putting was hit or miss, I’d either nail a 20 footer or 3 putt. But it was better than not playing at all so there’s that.
