Shoot an even par 72 by getting par on every hole or a few birdies and a few bogies?

Depends. If every par is "on in regulation, two putts," I'd go for the birdies and bogies round. My thinking is that, as a golfer, half the joy of a round is in the retelling of it. I want the round with the better stories :-)

My best rounds have been very boring.  Lots of GIR's, pars, with an occasional birdie or bogey.  Last Saturday shot 72 (par 70) ...1 bogey, 1 birdie., and 1 bad double.

That being said, one day I'd love to have a clean score card...I've never had one!

Gotta be a few bogs and a few birds for me. If I was making par all day long, fine, but after a while I'd be totally frustrated that I couldn't just make that "one" shot to score

Wouldn't care about the journey, the destination is all that matters at the end of the day

Maybe we are at different stages of life, but it's all about the journey for me. I played a round last year at a muni course, could be a muni anywhere in the USA, but I remember my second shot on #6, a beautiful 6 Iron that ended up pin high 10 feet from the pin. I pulled out my Macgregor blade putter and I recall the glare coming off it.

I sunk that putt and since there was no one behind me but I was waiting on the group in front of me, I chipped a bit and just listened to the birds. No cars, no houses lining #6 at this particular muni. Just quiet.

I remember ever moment of that hole. The score,(which I do remember) is inconsequential.

I've done both. 18 pars is really tough. I've actually had 18 pars once and 17 pars and a birdie twice.

I don't really care honestly - even is even.

Excellent question!

For me, the clean scorecard has so much appeal in the fact that earning it will not be perfect fairway, GIR, 2 putts to earn the part. The course will ask you different questions, and having the skill to answer all of them for a clean card is impressive to me.

Either way it happened, I would enjoy scoring a 72. That journey would never be boring as the execution needed for every shot is very high.

I think we are at basically the same stage of life. I look forward to my late Sunday vintage walking rounds with about 5 clubs or so. I take it all in the beautiful lakes the birds and all. The score I could care less about. Another favorite thing I like to do now that it has warmed up and I will do that in a few minutes is get me a coffee and a cigar sit on the bench at my range and watch the sun come up.

As far as the original question-- I can not honestly recall a round ever as much golf as I have played where I had 18 straight pars. My cards are always interesting and if you are a stat freak (GIRs etc) my stats would be interesting.

I'm the opposite - I will take a par all day, every day, on any hole. There are some holes where I will take bogey.

Personally I'd take 18 pars. I do not like making bogey and if I'm hitting the putts where I want and they don't fall that is just how golf is sometimes

Agreed all the way around; clean cards are rare. Can't count the times I've started a round with ~14 pars, utter aloud something about a boring round and subsequently make a sloppy bogey on the following hole.

Agree with you on the last line especially---- With age we also acquire certain limitations in our golf game. good example I played in the only scramble I play in today. Most of the time I play my own game as if I am playing my own ball. This one par 5 with a elevated green and water in front of I always lay up. Today we had a ball in optimal lay up position so you know go for it. Tough carry for me at least a 230 carry. I smoked a 3 wood and almost pulled it off. Just laughed it off and said well 10 or 12 years ago I could have made it and had a few times in years past. I have had to learn my limitations with age

To be honest, I wouldn't care. Throw a couple of doubles in the mix if you want to. I've never shot even, so it would be awesome just to say to someone when they asked “how'd ya do” to say “even par today”.
