Golf Rounds: Morning or Afternoon

Recommended Posts

I prefer late morning/early afternoon mainly because it’s quieter and I’m just not a morning person 🤣

Simple question is,

Do you prefer morning or afternoon golf, and why?

I love the solo rounds at daylight.  The first one to tee off.  Dew on the ground and the thought of the untouched course ahead.  I enjoy the pace I set for the day and the quiet time to just enjoy the outdoors and nature around me. However, if I'm playing a round with the guys, I prefer playing in the afternoons.

Morning basically for pace of play.

Afternoons are slow!!!

I love early morning tee times! I’ll play any time of day but my favorite is first off the tee that day. I love the calm and I play fast so I love having no one in front of me. I also love the “first off the tee” announcement. It gets me going and puts a little good stress on me.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

First tee time of the day is great to get going and move at a good pace through the course.
Afternoon league is a good way to wrap up the work day.

I have to admit I have taken a liking to below 40 degrees or light drizzle and having the entire course to myself.

Early tee times for me as I get home and still have the whole day ahead of me, also beat the heat in the summer. When I am on vacation I prefer around 10am tee time.

Afternoon during the week due to my work schedule there is limited people out in the course at those times and i can just cruise and take my time if i want. Weekends i prefer later afternoon times cause i can still wake up and get all the errands handled before the round and dont have to rush around after a round. If ik its going to be a blazing hot day then ill definitely get an early morning round but not to typical around here

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

I prefer afternoon rounds now that I’m retired. Morning rounds are great. However, since it seems like a lifetime in the military and getting up at 0400, I value my ability to sleep in. Plus I like to hit the gym in the morning. Since it gets dark later now, a buddy and I often play at 17:30 (5:30 pm). We can get around 18 in just over 2 hours. That’s perfect!

Mornings are greatly preferred here, but I do play a significant number of 9-hole league rounds in the late afternoons. Generally, all of my 18-hole rounds are played before 9:00 or 10:00 AM, and in mid-summer I try to get out at the crack of dawn (6:30 AM or however early the courses open).

I always prefer a tee time from 8-10 in the morning. Nothing against midday start times but just something special about getting out early.

@Rob Person made the perfect comment, anytime you can get out is great.

For me personally, for many years played in an organized league on Saturday at sunrise. Had about 40 players, and first tee time was right around 6:00AM, and we all typically were done by 8:30AM then hand out any pot monies won over breakfast.

League stopped a few years ago, and now while still working for me the group I usually play with all like 12:00PM (noon) starts on weekends.

I live close to a course, so if time or sunlight allows, I can go and use practice putting green, bunkers, or range.

I do play rounds whenever the opportunity allows on off days, but those starts are usually late morning through early afternoon, as SWMBO likes to come along for either the walk or ride.

Retirement for me upcoming at the end of April, so I am quite certain my schedule will change due to the time I have available, and course availability.

Prefer the early morning tee times. Like to get out ahead of the pack s to speak and set the pace when possible. Peaceful, quiet, and tranquil until you make the turn.

A quick 9 in the late afternoon can be fun as long as the course isn't jammed up with slow play.

Early mornings for me are always the preference. I'm a morning person and most courses around me take close to an hour to get to. If I try to play in the late morning or afternoon, I lose a significant chunk of my day between commuting and slower rounds. If I get a 6:30am tee time and can play in 4 hours or less, I still have all afternoon and evening to spend time with my wife or friends.

I’m with @Rob Person on this…anytime is a good time for golf!

I would prefer the first tee time, just to get out and not have to wait on anyone.  Similar to others, afternoons tend to get more crowded and rounds take too long.

As early as possible without question.(Stuck with weekend play at this point)

First if anyone cancels out of our foursome, and we end up with 3 or 2, we will not be playing faster than foursomes in front of us, and have waiting on every shot. Honestly on a busy weekend you risk, it doing no good for someone to let you play through, if foursomes are lined up since 7AM, and you have back-outs, and a 9:30 tee time(this has happened to my one brother, and I so we take early to guard against this.)

Second hopefully we have nobody in front of us and set our own quick, but not rushing pace.  Normally even foursome playing first thing, have the same goal.  For the round to not take all day, get the golf in, and get home and on to the rest of the day.  I'm generalizing terribly, but on occasion when we have had to play somewhere with a 930, 1000 tee time, it just seems like most people playing mid morning, post 900 am, seem unconcerned at all with how long the round takes.

During the late fall - winter - early spring, I like to start a little later when the temp warms up a few degrees… every degree helps.  In winter it’s a crapshoot because frost delays mean later starts and if we have a later start anyway, then tee time is pushed into the afternoon unless there are cancellations.

In the spring - summer - and early fall we always play early to avoid the heat.  Can get to 100-110º by noon.  Doesn’t bother me, but my wife is prone to heatstroke.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Sunrise rounds are probably my favorite rounds. I like to be one of the first ones off and if I am the very first, it's all the better. I find the walk to be quite peaceful and relaxing. However, I do have to admit that being the last one on course is pretty nice as well. Twilight rounds are pretty cool when the light is just getting to the point where an approach shot is difficult on the 18th and then I can walk into an empty parking lot. I'd probably say that sunrose rounds are great when I play solo and last group on the course is cool when I am playing with others.

Having had manufacturing reporting to me for part of my career, I got used to getting up and at work around 7AM.  So getting up early during my retirement is not an issue.

I prefer mornings.  Mostly because during summer in the Lower Keys, it gets pretty hot and humid.  Three days a week we have the first set of tee times so we can get out and finish before the oppressive heat kicks in.
