Stripped back the deck in the pool area and applied new oil. Wish I knew about the stuff I put on earlier. Removing the previous ugly yellow pigment was far from fun. Multiple goes with the pressure washer, oil stripper and a day of crawling around scrubbing by hand followed by more pressure washing just about did me in.
Fortunately it looks like it’s come up well.

Thank you ....That’s why I did it myself but went cheap, they put in those counter tops before we bought it so decided to save money by not replacing them and the cabinets are from the 90s but were custom made looked really nice once I sanded them .. so I add the top part and trim and paint to make them look somewhat in this decade .. my parents redid there kitchen last year and I think it was $25-$30k ... kitchens are really expensive .. hope you get a good price

Did you just reface the cabinets? We're thinking of that as an option - but will need to redo the countertops. Our current kitchen is blue Formica - countertops and cabinet faces. What were the previous owners thinking???

I didn't do any veneers or anything they are the original cabinets .. I took the cabinet doors off did a deep clean to them and the frames and sanded them then bought self leveling paint from Benjamin Moore primer and the gray, used a sprayer to paint the doors for a smoother look.

  • 2 weeks later...
Nana got the kids an early Christmas gift which I built over the course of the week and finished off today.

all in all in took me 3ish hours to lay down the mulch, 8-10 to build the set.
The boys didn’t wait for me to finish to start using it. They started climbing the tower as soon as it was safely tethered to its ground stakes.

Next steps are to wrap the mulch with some edging to give it a finished look then add a spot with some stone for a fire pit!

What a great gift for the kids. They'll remember it forever.

So we've been in our new (to us) Florida condo for a week. The purchase was contingent on a home inspection and we were there for the summary. Everything seemed to be ok with some minor glitches like a broken window and a couple of major ones like a rusting water heater and replacing a dishwasher that's probably been there since the condo was built in 99. We were able to negotiate the price down for those items.

When we got into it a week ago, suffice it to say that there were a bunch of misses by the inspector.

All of the outlets in all three bathrooms weren't working. Figured they were all linked to a GFCI but couldn't find it. By accident I located it behind one of the bathroom doors. This is what it looked like. - it was painted shut
IMG_0410.JPG.8d31f714eea7d5757c015dbc8cfd88d5.JPG

Then there was the leaking kitchen faucet and a leaking water softener. Oh and the electrostatic air filters (2) that were so clogged I don't know how the HVAC system was operating.

Needless to say I'm pretty ticked and told the inspection co we're looking for some restitution. On the positive side, except for the water heater, I was able to fix everything myself. The water heater was so rusted and heavy I was afraid to move it so called in a plumber for that.

Yeah before this we were using an old set that was my wife’s childhood neighbors set, so probably 25+ years old and it was finally just beyond repair after that many NE winters.

I didn’t have the mulch down for that though so I wanted to make sure this set got a full treatment.

Have you looked at rubber mulch - not sure if that's what they call it, I've seen it at playgrounds. Looks like small pieces of rubber.

We did! With how much ends you in my kids shoes and what’s already been kicked out onto the grass it seemed like more trouble than it was worth for this set up. But you can use less of it and still get some nice cushioning in the event of a fall.

We got a pretty good deal on 6 yards of playground mulch. The place gave us an extra yard because there was a mixup on the delivery date.

Any tips on cutting PVC wainscoating with a hand saw?  I do very little home improvement, but I'm doing a small project where I'm trimming out some Ikea bookshelves to make them look like built-ins.  I don't really have a need for a circular saw or a jigsaw.  I actually have a circular saw that I got out of my grandfather's garage.  It's sat unused for 20 years and will not work now.  I just need to cut off a foot or so from two 7" wide pieces of the wainscoating to cover gaps between the shelves, so I hate to invest in a power tool for it.

I just need to cut off a foot or so from two 7" wide pieces of the wainscoating to cover gaps between the shelves, so I hate to invest in a power tool for it.

you can do it with hand tools if you have the right hand saw and a miter box. I'd ask the people at the hardware store which is the right hand saw - since you don't want to use something like a crosscut saw. You'll probably have to 'polish' the cut edge with sandpaper. FYI, a power /circular saw would probably make a mess out of it.

Son.....I say Son........There ain't no project worth doin' that don't involve gettin' a new tool!!

😆

I can't picture what you are trying to do with the wainscoting to offer any advice yet.  Are the shelves 'open' and you are trying to make them look like there is a back to them?  Do you have a neighbor that might have a saw rental fee of one beer or a golf buddy that would do the cuts for you for maybe a sleeve of Srixons?

Nana got the kids an early Christmas gift which I built over the course of the week and finished off today.

all in all in took me 3ish hours to lay down the mulch, 8-10 to build the set.

The boys didn’t wait for me to finish to start using it. They started climbing the tower as soon as it was safely tethered to its ground stakes.

Next steps are to wrap the mulch with some edging to give it a finished look then add a spot with some stone for a fire pit!

Great job....Looks awesome....and can now be used as a bargaining chip.  If the kids are bad tell 'em the swings are going bye bye and its going to be a frame for your hitting net!!

Hmmmm they might then ask me to make a net to put up so we can hit into it when we aren't swinging....  But something like that could work. haha

I would buy an extra piece and practice cutting using a smaller tooth blade.  Pay attention to your cut orientation as well...if it has a tendency to fray you'll want that on the back side.

Had to repair some shingles and the roof and repair some gutters today. The storm we got last night was brutal with the wind.

You need a fine tooth or finishing blade. You could do it with a circular or drop saw but you'd need an 80 tooth, at a minimum.

Another morning of projects at our 'new to us' Fl condo. Cleaned out the front and side lower gutters that were filled with flint aggregate from the shingles. Then came the toilet reseal: the toilet in our master bath was wobbly and one of the bolts had completely deteriorated so took it apart and put in a new non-wax seal and new bolts. The end result was a 'thumbs up' from my wife. A nasty job but it had to get done. The afternoon was dedicated to visiting different courses we wanted to play. We've got a tee time at Cypress Creek tomorrow (a recommendation from @GregB135) and playing with friends at Esplanade - Lakewood Ranch on Thursday.

Next on the list; buying and installing a new water softener and finishing the gutters.

It must be toilet week....

One of yesterday's projects was replacing the tank guts on a toilet at church that was not sealing off the tank water from the bowl.  I'm not sure how long it was running through but there were some serious water stains in the bowl.  The pumice stone took care of it though, those things are awesome!
