Fun topic 🙂

I started driving my Dad's "commute" car - a '77 Subaru.  But shortly after getting my license, I bought a 1979 Camaro Rally Sport in two tone blue (as pictured below).

... I will see your RS and raise you a Z28. Took this picture when I had moved to Philly to show my southern friends the cold didn't bother me. But of course it did. 🥶

If that were bright royal blue, it would look just like my son’s Z28.

Ok, Chisag.  I was not nearly as cool as you in my RS (gawky 17 yo - but my wheels got me looks 😛 )

I will always have soft spot in my heart for a Camaro.

So even though I graduated in 2003, my first car was a 1970 Chevy Impala. My great aunt died at 102 and it was the last new car she bought (she lived in Southern Ohio where it doesn't snow near as much as CLE) Her son sold it to us, and I drove it for 2 years. I found a pic of one, and this is the same gold color it was originally, but we painted it dark green to match the interior. Of course it was half bondo, so I couldn't drive it in winter. I bought a 1990 Chevy Beretta for the cold months. It was so much fun to drive, it had the bench seats still, and looked cool. Some guys had I-ROC Camaros, but no one else has classic cars at my school. The 1970 wasn't overly popular and the only notable thing about it was '70 was the year GM switched from the 400 to the 350 in the Impala. I know the '64 is what's popular but I always liked the '60 the best, and the '62/'63 I also saw at a lot of car shows. Oh and it was awseome when Baby showed up in one of my favorite TV shows (It's a 1967 4-door on Supernatural)

If I only held on to them!  This was fun. Thanks for the memories. I have a folder on my computer with all my cars over the years.

1967 Mercury Cougar

1970 Dodge Challenger

1969 Mustang Mach1 My pride and joy. Identical to this but in Mercedes Benz brown color with gold stripe. Obviously not much stock here. It was a track car that I made street legal. I broke the driver's seat twice coming off the line. Once the folding seat back snapped. Replaced it with a fixed racing seat. The second time I ripped the bolts out of the floor. Not too much fun with the front wheels off the ground and you wind up in the back seat grasping to reach the steering wheel again. This was unfortunately one of those lose the car or your license.  Everyone wanted to race me and not being one to back down from a challenge. Well let's just say I missed her dearly. I barely held on to my license. Took a while for all the tickets to come off (Tickets for speeding, noise pollution, reckless driving). But really reckless driving! It wasn't my fault that the front wheels were off the ground at the time.

... We were chauffeured around in a Rolls Royce and called out license plates on the air if they had a WZZD bumper sticker and after pulling over we had them choose from 4 envelopes with $10-$20-$50 and a $100 bill inside. Once a week we put $1,000 in the $100 envelope and actually gave it away a couple times. Back in the late 70's $100 was a pretty good prize. This is back when radio was fun!

My first car was a '76 VW Dasher wagon (root beer brown)

VOLKSWAGENPassatVariant-2443_3.jpg.d56ceef79bcc308be24b89287007087c.jpg

It was a fun little car and even had fuel injection. I rear-ended someone and totalled it.

Drove a totally beat up bug for a couple years, then got a '76 Mercury Capri Rokstock. As I understand it, the Rokstock designation was someone trying to do a Shelby thing to these. Beefed up suspension and engine tweaks for better performance. Mine had a pretty healthy 2.8 V6, but there was apparently a turbo version of the engine, too. I loved that car. Mine looked just like the pics, but different wheels.

I believe that one with the turbo V6 was called the Capri RS, and it had a hot little turbocharged 2.3 liter engine.

Always wanted a 56 or 57 Bel Air  (with or without the fins... either is good 🙂 ).  That Delray is a looker!!!

Didn't have a car when I got my license at 16; rode a Honda 250 Scrambler to school (all year long in the Willamette Valley rain).  When I turned 18, I bought a very used, tired 1956 Bel Air 4-door... same color as this one for $200:

I drove it for 6 months with 7 cracked pistons, then rebuilt the engine for $75 and drove it to college until my junior year... sold it for $300.

I love turning 16 in the 80's.. we still had access to all the good cars of the 50's and 60's for cheap.. and we were past the early to mid 70's when cars were crap.. What can i say, i owned 2 Mustang 2's.. All my friends had Early Mustangs, Camaro's, El Caminos, ect.. IN about 1988 I think.. We knew a guy getting divorced and had to sell his car collection.. I was Offered a 1969 Boss 302 All original mustang with about 25,000 miles AND another complete Boss 302 motor still in Original crate All for $7000... But back then it was "just a 1969 Mustang" and no banks would loan that much on a car that old at the time..  and about a yr before that The Body Shop my Dad ran had a 1967 Thunderbird 4 door, the owner offered me for $4000, this thing was loaded leather, console, suicide rear doors, and the cherry on top, the 429 Super cobra jet motor.. Again noone would finance a kid for that much on a car that old.. Just like this only White with black vinyl top. it had been sitting in the body shop for about 10yrs, the owner got a new truck and just parked it with 55,000 miles.. OMG it was fun.. just with I could have bought it.. and Not just drove it once..

So first car that was all mine was a sporty little Triumph TR6 that looked somewhat like this .. but of course *not* as well detailed and shiny 🤣

Sure was fun to drive but was also a bit of a PITA - pretty much every time you wanted to take it out, you had to raise the hood and fiddle with the needle valve adjuster on the carb (oh those finicky English carbs) and give it a few drops of oil, too! Ran much smoother then.

It had independent rear wheel suspension and one time a few friends and I were out and they pranked me - they went outside before me and lifted up the rear end of the car enough so that the two rear wheels were pigeon-toed in .. I looked at it and thought someone had run into from the side, but they're there cracking up so I figured it out quickly enough.

A friend of mine had one of these in BRG.  We drove from Richland to LA (along CA Hwy 1) for the 1st Long Beach Grand Prix.  Then we left after the race on Sunday and drove back to Richland... I was at work by 9am Monday!!!

My first car was a '64 1/2 Ford Mustang 289 Convertible.  Got it my senior year in high school 1969.  Burned up the original engine when I pulled a UHaul from Florida to Maryland.  Because I was getting transferred to a new duty station and it wasn't running, I sold it for $50....2 years later it was the HOTTEST item going.

What was your on air stage name?

... John Brock until I went to WMET, a station late in my career that already had a Brock Whaley and the PD thought it would be confusing so without asking did a promo announcing my arrival using my real name. Kinda stuck after that.

Yep, that guy standing next to the Z28 is definitely a John Brock!

My first car was a '64 1/2 Ford Mustang 289 Convertible.  Got it my senior year in high school 1969.  Burned up the original engine when I pulled a UHaul from Florida to Maryland.  Because I was getting transferred to a new duty station and it wasn't running, I sold it for $50....2 years later it was the HOTTEST item going.

Back when radio had personalities that gave the station its personality!  Good times!

I believe that one with the turbo V6 was called the Capri RS, and it had a hot little turbocharged 2.3 liter engine.

I had to Google to make sure. The Rokstock RSR was a 2.8 turbo. Perhaps there was a 2.3 turbo option as well? I couldn't find it though.

The first car I drove was a Ford Galaxie 500 that my grandma gave my Dad. It was a red two door with the black top, black interior.

Then the first car my parents bought me was a used 1986 Ford Tempo, light blue four door, light blue interior. It turned-out to be a piece of junk, always needed a repair. This looks EXACTLY like the one I had.

Not sure why it was sold/traded. Very cool styling!

Martha's dad had a '62 Thunderbird convertible.  She told me a story that when she was in downtown Spokane one day, her dad drove by with the retractable top halfway up/down... stuck!  🤣

After my ‘69 Pontiac Bonneville, I bought a ‘61 Chevy Impala convertible (same color combination as that Mustang, although the blue was just a half shade lighter). I also burned/blew up that car’s engine by putting far too much strain on it hauling around band instruments and amplifiers plus part of a PA system.

Yes, there definitely was a ‘76 Capri RS model with a turbo 2.3 liter V6. I believe it was intended to compete with the Cosworth Vega, and Ford also used that engine in their European WRC (rallying) Capris, because there was a displacement limit for that tall classification and 2.8L would push them over the limit.

I was not indicating that your black Capri in the photo had a 2.3L V6; far and away the majority of the Capris (and I believe that all of them sold in the USA and Canada) came with either a 4-cylinder engine or the optional 2.8L V6.  I am pretty sure that Ford only made something like (50) of the RS model to sell to the public -- that is a necessity if you are going to race any car in a certain configuration as a "stock" vehicle.

EDIT:  That 2.3L engine used in the Capri R/S was a 4-cyl, not a V6.  It was turbocharged, and started out at 145 HP, but after adding an intercooler and increasing the compression ratio, it was boosted further to 175 HP.  That engine also made a repeat appearance in the 1980s Merkur XR4ti

Back when radio had personalities that gave the station its personality!  Good times!

... I did a bit where someone would recognize me just by the sound of my voice. It gave me an excuse to use a ton of different dialects and accents. The end of the bit would always be the title of a song that I would then play*. Some listeners thought they were all true and others just appreciated the story and the accents. They took a lot of work and a lot of writing. The cornier the better. New PD came in and said stop that immediately and wanted me to start reading the cards he put in the control room. That was the end for me.

Condensed example: I was picking up some dry cleaning and the Asian lady (I did her voice) asked my name and then said "Hey ... aren't you the guy on the radio? I listen to you while I eat lunch everyday!" I smiled and asked if she had removed one of the legs of the 3 legged bell bottoms I gave her. She did and asked why I had it removed and why were there 3 bell bottom legs to begin with? I told her Sarah, my aunt was born with 3 legs but had an accident while visiting me and one of them was amputated so I needed so send one less bell to aunt Sarah ... and then played One Less Bell To Answer. 🤪
