How'd you play?

Yesterday was the maiden voyage with my new Senior-centric KISS setup, and it couldn’t have gone better!!!

My new irons and wedges worked like a charm, right out of the box. Apparently these Launcher Hybrid things really are idiot proof, because even I couldn’t screw them up. I shot 42-41 from the whites, and my teammate (he shot 76 with a double on 18) and I blew away the rest of the A flight in our Saturday league, posting a net 30-27- 57. We won front, back and total to win $150 each! You know we got an earful when that score was announced. 😜
I couldn’t believe how easy the new irons played… they ticked every box as far as what I was looking for from them. High ball flight, forgiveness, and as a bonus, I’ve never had an iron that was this easy to hit pitch and chip shots with around the green.
Distance wise, they’re never going to be as long as the extremely strong lofted Rogue X I had been playing, but that’s okay, as long as I can keep throwing the darts I was yesterday, I’ll gladly give up half a club.

That’s some nice playing with the new sticks!!! Congrats on the win.

Just to add one more thing to my prior post…

I mentioned that the new Launchers were a 1/2 club short of my old Rogue X irons… take that comment with a grain of salt.

I wasn’t realling going after it hard with them for most of my round, but as my confidence with them grew, I swung harder and once I did, they were comparable in distance to my old set. Hard to be sure though, because I hit these very solid yesterday and the higher flight is so foreign to what I’d been getting with my old set.

I have a feeling the strong lofts in the X’s weren’t helping me anymore. My SS has gone down from when I bought them over 4 years ago, and I think the added loft with my new ones helps with that.

Maybe these Launchers might have even more in the tank for me as I get used to swinging them…?

OK.. **IF** I'm allowed a 1st tee Mulligan (please guys pleez pleeez 😆) then I've shot my PB to date and unofficially broken 90 for the first time 👍

Scored 89 / +17 (using the Mulligan but hey it is the hardest opening tee shot hole...) and had a new PB 9 hole score of 41 / +5 on the back 9 -- and that was with a Penalty (last tee shot pulled left and it rolled down the slope into the water .. took a drop .. nailed the approach), a 2-Chip, a 3-putt, a few wayward tee shots ... but it was the 14 putts on the back 9 that really made the day!

Side note:
Recently switched back to an MLA Tour XDream that I was a tester for a few years back. Now I really like my EvnRoll ER5 - and thought I was putting better with it the past few seasons .. but... it seems my distance control instantly improved with the MLA. And not only that I also seem to be starting shorter putts on-line better - making more second "non-gimme" putts, too. I also just bought a ShotScope V3 partly with the intent to track the performance of each putter, but as of right now it looks like I'll be collecting plenty of data for the MLA before taking the ER5 out again.

On the front 9 I had a total of 48/+12 including ...
.. a penalty on the short Par 4 2nd hole after a (rare...) good tee shot I chunked the short approach and the ball was almost completely buried right under a protruding front lip of a deep bunker - I didn't think I could get the ball out so I picked it up and took a drop further back in the bunker;
.. several 2-Chips (short wedge game was literally 50-50 good or stinker);
.. one 3-Putt which was part of a Quadruple-bogey on a Par 5 that I just made a mess of;
.. and a few wayward tee shots where I found a fairway bunker or some trees;
.. along with a reasonably solid 18 putts.

So if I can continue to clean up my game - keep reducing the errors, keep improving the tee shots and approach shots, keep working on the mental game, etc. - and keep the good putting going then I may .. just may .. have an actual chance of shooting in the 80s more often!
(..fingers crossed .. making sacrifices to the golf gods .. sending off donations to charities .. thinking happy thoughts.....)

You’re good by me on the “Breakfast Ball”👍

Played 18 at Silver Ridge in Oregon, IL with my son and a couple friends from work.  Weather was great, course was beautiful and the companionship was fantastic.  As is my usual custom, I played horrendously, shooting a 120.  Had a few good shots, especially a roughly 25 foot putt that went left-right and dropped dead in the middle!

On the other hand, I teed up a little too high on a 3 wood and managed to smash the tee, missing the ball completely, cartoon-style, lol.

It's a great course and we signed up for a scramble next month to benefit the local high school.  Looking forward to it!

Since my wife was playing in a 2-day ladies invitational at the private country club, I was on my own this weekend.  Saturday I showed up at the course, hit a few balls, and got a call to join a couple on the tee... I walked.  She was just learning to play.  😬 They were nice, and even with her many shots, we still waited on the group in front of us.  I quit after hole 6 because it was close to the clubhouse... 1 hour and 40 minutes to play 6 holes!!

Now, today I played with the marshal from Saturday as the fourth in his group.  He was telling us that when he came off the back nine yesterday, he noticed a cart parked up by the green on #2... not allowed unless it has a blue handicap flag.  He told them they couldn't do that and stay on the cart path by the greens.  Two holes later he found then by the green again on the par 3 #4.  They moved.  Watching them play the par 5 #5 hole, they were just standing in the middle of the fairway not far off the tee with a group waiting on the tee box and another group headed to the tee box.  He yelled at them.  They said they were just learning to play and had come off the range from a lesson with the teaching pro (not a club employee).  They didn't have a tee time; just jumped in front of a group on the 1st tee.  They hadn't even paid for the round; they picked up a cart from the cart return!!!  The marshal escorted them off the course and told them to tell the pro why they were kicked off.  That group was 3 groups in front of me yesterday!!  Sigh!  Life at a muni.

Today was a good day and a bad day for me... +3 on the front nine and +11 on the back nine for an 86.  We all played rather poorly on the back nine as the wind picked up to 15-20 mph.  I haven't played in much wind over the past 3 months.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Well that was a bit of an eventful week. From the depths of despair and back.

Last Monday my game just got to me, my expectations were not matching the reality. The course over the summer months have been playing difficult and with the rain in August my thoughts were that I would start scoring better but the game isn't that easy.

All my life I've been fighting with a high cut with my driver, I go to the range or lessons and I think I've solved it only for it to come back. My handicap has been bouncing around this season getting down to 4.9 up to 6.8 and back to 6. When I drive well I score well, current conditions that is carrying 230 and average 250yds. When the high cut comes in I'm down to about 190 and of course if I'm lucky in semi rough.

After another go at changing my setup I thought I solved my driving issues, last Monday played the local Muni. 1st hole bit of a push but good length, 2nd 299yd par 4 on the fringe with my drive. So far so good, 3rd cut into the tree on the right chip out ended with a 7, 4th great drive up the centre, 5th cut back, 6th push, 8th great drive, 9th lost ball (reload great hit), etc, etc. Came off totally disillusioned didn't want to go out on Wednesday but managed 12 holes, played Thursday and again wasn't really engaged. After a bit of soul searching and re-alignment of expectations (i'm not a scratch golfer) went back out at the weekend. Saturday 35 (-1) on the front 9, then the rain came finished 77 (+6); Sunday -1 through 15, then carved two 4h into gorse for an 8 to finish 75 (+4).

... I am not a fan of the Mulligan because over coming/giving in to adversity is the very essence of the game. That said, I have no problem at all with anyone taking a Mullligan off the very first tee. So many factors involved, especially starting out in a negative mood or nervous first tee jitters can derail a round before it even starts. Who wants that?  So congrats on breaking 90!!!!!  🤗

It was a great weekend for golf, sunny with only about 10 mph of wind. This was opening weekend with our Championship G12 bermuda greens, and man it was amazing. I didn't have a single putt bounce on me. I had to relearn the greens, and I guess because they are a faster and did not break as much. My swing was really good with the 8 iron down, and I hit some shots my buddy said were the best shots he has seen me hit in a long time. There were some shots I never even felt on the clubface it was so pure, and right on line. I just need to keep practicing my longer clubs, I play a long course and hit a lot of 6 and 5 irons. I didn't hit alot of greens,3, and 3 more were on the fringe. Going to really buckle down this week with more technical practice, and bunker shots.

Had a dew sweeper round this morning. Where everything seemed to just align including score. The hurricane coming in had us debating leaving vacation a day early (Saturday evening instead of Sunday afternoon) but it veered west and ended up being a fantastic morning.

6:30 tee time was the 5th tee time as a single. The 3/4 groups let me pass by hole 3 which was awesome and passed the 2nd group at hole 5. I finished the front 9 in 1.5 and back in 1 hour walking, channeled my inner @Shankster

2 weeks removed from my PB I came back and tied it. Shot a +5 77 (7 pars 3 birdies 8 bogeys with 1 penalty on 9 off the tee....should have looked how far the crap was)

7/14 fairways (1 pretty offline but everything else was a few yards)

10/18 greens

32 putts (more details in FUJIKURA MC shaft thread)

Today a lot of things aligned. Was the first time since late June early July I felt comfortable off the tee, I think I figured out my woes (I need to swing the club, I had been babying it and just in a funk) today broke that. Was also the first time this year I felt really comfortable swinging irons/approach play. I am finding this 3/4 swing and taking a little extra club is a much better approach for me. Wedges were good and putting was good. This is the best my SG has been for all 4 facets of the game in the same round.

Highlight of the day in which I can only explain as a great shot that got lucky. Also got to see what it felt like to get @Chip Strokesdistance off the tee. So to carry the garbage was 270 slightly down hill. I landed past that about 300 1 hopped onto the cart path and it proceeded to rolllllllll on the path until its final resting place.....I don't think this PB is going anywhere anytime soon. 4 iron was purred and a little downhill, pin high just pulled it.

Had a lot of other good shots in between but finished up on what I keep coming back for, just missed the green again.

All in all a beautiful day and made it back home in record time beating all the traffic coming from vacationland and live free or die states.

Nice round, see you were back up in the good ole' NH here. That is a fun course, a bit target golf at times. That hole is no joke from the tips, cart path is the way to get there in two. Nice round.
