Does it count if I played with a group that WITNESSED an ace earlier in the day? 🤔

Closest one so far this year for me! Hole was playing 180 yds and is downhill 31’. Hit 6 iron to ~3’. (34” putter for reference) Such a cool feeling to get that close on a tee shot and yes, I made the birdie putt. 😁

Over the years I have come close, witchin 1-2’ but one in particular last summer that was within 2”.  That should have been a HIO as I’m sure the greenskeeper was off by 2” that day.

We are a here for you Rich 🙂.

I've been on a close encounter dry spell of late.  Our mens league has CTP's on all par 3's and for both blue or blue white and white and white gold tees.  Two weeks ago, I was inside 4 feet, walked up to check the card and someone was already at 2'10".  Last week I was inside 6 feet and... yup... someone had already recored a 2'10".  RU serious? 😒

Last Sunday I hosted a PXG fitter to a round here at our Cimmaron course.  On #15, his ball divot was 2 inches on the left edge of the cup and his ball came to rest 2 inches on the right side of the cup. He too is still aceless.  I handed him my card with the link to the support group 😆.

I'd love to see the look on his face with a ball mark on one side and the ball on the other. That had to be a huge "How the ...?" moment. 😄

I was not close yesterday, but I did hit 3/4 greens on par 3s and all were pin high or just past.  It gives me hope.

Meanwhile, a good friend got his first last week … on a 308 yard Par 4.  Albatross Ace!  Wow.

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

Haven't been close in awhile but my most wrenching time I missed

Par three with my wife and two boys I hit one right at it. Ball takes one bounce and is rolling right at the cup, I'm thinking I'm getting on in front of the boys and Laura would be amazing.

See the ball roll into the cup and pop up and stop about a 3 inches past. There was a damn pool noodle in the cup, last guy must've lifted the flag and not fixed the pool noodle because it was about half an inch from the top of the cup.

My wife sees me trying to laugh off the anger I'm trying to hide and thinks saying we should count it, would help. My very competitive (3 year old at the time) is ready to find whoever put the pool noodle in the cup and tell them the story of how they ruined my hole in one. They both also told me we should get ice cream and that I'd probably get one real soon anyway. We got the ice cream but I'm still waiting on the Ace.

I'm grateful for this thread. I've been playing over 30 years and while I've been within a foot a couple times, that's it. I also have only witnessed 1 hole in one while playing. My girlfriend at the time, playing 120yd hole, hit a worm burner, never getting off the ground, but it rolled up and into the hole. The group on the next tee, as this was a tight course, started yelling/cheering.  That's when I started saying to myself, unconventional golf, it may not look pretty, but it works for me.  This was 25 years ago or so.

Good or bad, I play unconventional golf a few times a round and have really learned to embrace it.

Typically a bogey golfer although I have improved some over the past few years due to playing more.

OMG, where to start?  Been playing off and on for 40 years.  Funny enough I hit the pin yesterday but ended up on the fringe behind the hole and missed the birdie putt.  The closest I have been is two inches behind the cup on #15 at Doral's Blue Monster from around 165 yards out as it lipped around the cup to the back.  The worst part is that my brother has two of them and he's not a great golfer.  His most incredible hole-in-one is the one that he topped off the tee and it rolled down the cart path, over a bridge bounding back and forth from the concrete rails and then continued to roll all the way into the cup.  There's just no justice.

I am 100% in the same boat!! Have been inches away, but never made one. Funny (or sad) that my closest were when I started playing. Almost had one in Misawa Japan.....nailed a 5 wood on a uphill par 3. The guys I was playing wither were like "that was waaay too much club", and they were right. That thing was soaring over the green......then about 20 yards past the green it nailed a tree in the air, came back, rolled all the way to the cup, just inches away. Completely ridiculous. I have witnessed 2 hole-in-ones when stationed in Germany, both on the same hole, 15, both during rounds of our intramural golf league......so at least I have got to have some free beers?

I'm not a real frequent visitor to the forum, and contribute even less, but I love the stuff you guys post. Been playing 15 years with no ace, close a number of times like many of you, but none that are memorable because they didn't go in. But now I'll have to start keeping track of just how close without going in. Which brings me to this past Saturday at Fox Fire GC at Par 4 Resort in Waupaca, WI. #11 playing 170 yards to a front pin. Somewhat ugly 6 iron, bounced short of the green and rolled on to 5 feet long (per Arccos, no tape measure in my bag, but there is now). Now I know 5 feet is probably a bit long for this thread topic, but I made the putt which is pretty important, right? 😉😁

It's not about how well you're playing, but who you're playing with.

Would like to know how many have beaten my longevity record: aceless for 69 years. Started playing at 4, playing full rounds to qualify for legit acedom at 10 (so that reduces longevity to 63 years?), single digit handicap from 13 to 73 years OLD (separate category for incompetent competence of 60 years?). Other subcategory: number of double eagles without an ace (am i leader in clubhouse with 2?). great subject. cheers to my fellow futile flingers of fallow fortune.

Been playing since 1988 or so.  Figure about 1000 rounds of golf.  FINALLY got my first last week!  Never really been close to one going in before that.  I'm a 9 index, so not a complete hacker either.

#7 Carolina Trace - Creek.  158 yards to a front pin, downhill.  Hit a 3/4 swing 8 iron (hit it hard though) and it took one hop about a foot back of the pin and dropped.  I was in complete disbelief.

I'm convinced now more than ever that these things are luck and not skill.  Consistently being close to the hole...that's skill (not me).  Going in?  Luck.

Keep swinging.

Hang in there...I made my first ace in college in a match in 1969. Aceless until 2022 when I finally made another and I was a PGA member and have played LOTS of golf since. Most disappointing "close" was in a pro-am where I lipped out for an ace and the prize was a new car. The ball stopped 2 in away! To make things worse...my wife has made THREE aces in the past two seasons! JJ

I don't have the decades-long chase that some of you have. I've only been playing regularly for about 8 years now.

What I do have is an 8-year-old who constantly reminds me that he has an ace, and that he got his when he was 5. So that's my burden.

Remind him that someday he and his ace will need to take care of you - and what goes around, comes around…

Figured I would jump in here as I am new to the forum.  I have been playing for over 50 years and never had one but have come close.  Caddied for years as a kid and never saw one either.

My closest was two years ago during COVID down the Cape (Cod).  I was playing with my brothers and hit the pin which had those damn ball removers on the pin because of COVID and bounced a foot away.  Was pissed to say the least. Oh well great day of golf with my three brothers.

This is just the thread for me! I’ve been playing since I was 11 and now at 77, and still a very active player, I’m wondering “what the heck?” I find it particularly annoying when I ask friends who have recently had holes-in-one if this was their first and they respond with “nope, my third” or “ my fourth”, etc. Oh well, at least I’ve enjoyed the free beer!

Not sure if finding this group makes me feel better or worse about myself...

Haven't been really close in years but I still get that microsecond of a feeling that the ball is going in when it is in the air and heading in the general direction of the flag.

I'll play. Not my first brush with an ace, but certainly the closest. #8 at Carthage Municipal Golf Course in Carthage, MO. Forget what the yardage was on that particular day, but it normally plays ~200 yards. Pin was at the front, greens freshly aerated, and playing into the wind if I recall correctly. Hit my 3 Hybrid low and up the right side of the green and watched it roll left towards the hole before stopping here... 😞 😞 😞

My closest and most recent.  Playing in a scramble so I was moved up a tee.  Cut the corner on a par 4  uphill with a 3 wood from 220 yds.

Oh so close!  It was online so one more rotation of the ball and it would have been in.  And an Albatross at that!

63 yo and playing all my life.  Took about 18 years off but still a lot of rounds with no luck so far!15FE3203-5CE1-4741-9080-D44257ED2E72.jpeg.279c3adadc02aeb7ac9df62b952979a9.jpeg

Have courage, Friends! It took me six friggen decades of playing golf before I finally made my first ace, last October. And fortunately it happened in front of witnesses, including a fellow looper, at my home course of Chambers Bay, so I didn’t have to worry about self-verification issues. Yours will happen when you least expect it, but it’s gonna happen!
