I’ve been playing golf for the better part of 25 years. I started pretty young going to the range with my dad. I’m still searching for my first hole in one. Been close only a few times. The closest I’ve ever come was a near dunk at westlake golf course from 160yds. It Ricocheted 30 ft right onto the fringe and left me a brutal left breaker downhill which I somehow made. It helped to take some of the sting out of it. Haha. Maybe someday….

New entrant to closest without going in for me.

#8 at Pine Brook GC playing about 130y, 9i flew to about 5' past and 7' left of the hole and bit hard. Rolled left to right back down the slope but stopped about 10" from the hole.

Many years ago, my father (whom never had an ace) told me that there are only three things that happen once in your life. You get a hole in one, you marry the right woman, and you pass away. Thank goodness I married the right woman.

Just wrapped up a Father’s Day round with my old man. For a heartbeat, I thought I’d finally escaped the clutches of this thread but it was the shadows playing tricks again. Guess I’ll just have to stick with the original gift I was planning for him.

#16 - island green, 156 yds, 1-2 club quartering wind hurting out of the right. Waffled between 6-iron/7-iron because I was playing pretty decent and wanted to guarantee covering the water. Went with 7-iron last minute with the thought, “it’s enough if you put a good swing on it”. Well I did put a pretty damned good swing on it, but not quite good enough. Still aceless…

Well, got it close again this past Saturday. #7 at Patriot Golf Club, playing 100yds, 9 iron. It had some bite in it and rolled back toward the tee box a bit to 4ft. Made the putt. I'll try again this Saturday...

My closest in some time, certainly this year. Lassing Pointe (Union, KY) #11, 188 yds slightly downhill into a good breeze, 5 hybrid. Of course I'm disappointed it didn't go in, but it was very satisfying in that it was my best swing of the day. A third of the way there my partner said, "I think that's going in!" Yes, I made the putt.

I am still a part of this thread after a beauty of a butter cut with  a 3/4 9i to about 4' .   Nice shot but since it wasnt within the grip it wasnt picture worthy.  Figured i had closest to the pin locked up.

Then i got to watch SWMBO and a friend of ours hit their shots from the next tee box up.  Our friend pures her mizuno hot metal 9i  106 yards, it hits 8" to the right of the cup, hops left and into the hole!

So even though i lost cttp, at least I got to witness an ace this evening!

Wow, it's been some time since I added a "close encounter" post.  This was from yesterday at Granite Falls South, #17 playing at 171 yards. I was between a red-ass 5i or 4i.  I went with the 4i since the pin was in the back and the back portion of the green has an upslope.  I tend to be short on this hole.

I knew the line was great but couldn't quite see how close it came. The putt was dead straight up the remaining 10 inches.. just another foot, seriously 😐. Walking off the green I swore I heard a voice say "thanks for playing, you're still aceless" 🤣.

OMG...how does this not go in...from the upslope side 😥My closest encounter ever.  #17, par 3, playing 154 at Cimarron today during the member-member tournament.  The back 9 was Pinehurst format.  My partner nearly missed his tee shot and dribble it about 30 feet into a group of shrubs in front of the tee... no pressure 😆.

Hit as pure a 6i as I can and it never left the flag.  But, I really couldn't tell how close it was.  Because I went to find and see if I could hit my partners tee shot (never found the ball), I arrived at the green and the other 3 guys are all standing around the flag, in a huddle so close I wondered what the heck they were doing. They said they were casting a showdow on the ball in hopes of making it roll 🙏.  We couldn't use the measuring tape, so I entered 0'- 1/2"... pretty sure I'll get that CTP.

If odds hold true as I suspect they will, I will never leave this thread now 🤣.

I can think of few more altruistic (and hilarious) sporting moments than three golfers huddled together in an attempt to will another player’s inert golf ball into the hole. It certainly puts a slightly different spin on the term “throwing shade”.

Uff Da… my apologies, it’s obviously wayyy too soon to casually toss around the phrase “slightly different spin” in reference to your most recent close encounter.

I swear on my own aceless record, more than any other thread on this forum, it feels like you have to tiptoe around in here. And while we’re on the tiptoe subject, seeing as they were already huddled together, real pals would have been river dancing around that hole.

Been hitting a lot of close approaches lately...but still no luck on the aces. Buuut...while warming up on the range, I took out a ball and my LW, and made a "Par 3" by hitting one 65yds back across the path / over the carts to the elevated chipping green -- JARRED IT! Doesn't count, but gives me hope.

I am also on this list of not hitting one yet.....  I was changing pins years ago and they hadn't cut greens yet. 165yrds, dew on the ground still.  Hit 3ft in front of pin, rolled all the way around the cup and 2in away. Worst part was seeing the ball track in the dew.  Have hit the flagstick and hit the cup before but this just felt worse.

I've been this close at least a dozen times and have never gotten one to fall, sorry man. I just read an article about a lady in our town who just notched her 22nd HIO!!

I have been playing golf for 65 years since the age of 11, at least 6000 rounds, and have had hundreds of shots within an inch or two of getting a hole in one.  But, last Thursday, August 31, I finally got one on hole #3 at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Clayton, IN.  It’s actually a relief rather than a thrill that the wait is over.  (I lied.  IT’S a thrill.)IMG_6375.jpeg.af2fef6dc288aae4c3491eb453d5443a.jpeg

Congratulations!

Now get out of this thread Mr HIO! 🤣

Congratulations @sotall 👏.  Nice to see someone actually graduate from this school 😆.  As per the thread rules, you are still eligible to return and chorttle at "close encounters".
