Center shafted putters

Recommended Posts

Fellow Spy’s,

I am looking to purchase a new putter and need feedback from anyone currently gaming a center shafted putter. Many years ago I gamed a center shafted putter which always produced great results due to a straight back and through stroke. My stroke evolved into a gradual arc and I am currently gaming a SC Newport 1.5.

Old habits die and now my stroke seems to have regressed back to a straight back and forward stroke, hence the curiosity and possible need for a center shafted type putter.

So, recommendations, suggestions, endorsements? My short list is Evenroll ( groove technology), Sik (DLT has my attention), SC Phantom line.

All feedback welcomed and appreciated. Thx much.

Feedback:   Putting strokes aren't straight back and through.   Don't have to have a center shafted putter for a "SBST" stroke.

That said if you want a center shafted putter, the ones you selected are fine.  Many would recommend LAB as the best option.   I play a Sacks Parente that I do really well with aiming and starting the ball where aimed.

I always done pretty well with CS putters but done some experimenting with Stability Shafts in my last 4 putters and for me that is the shaft of choice and now my plans are gong back to a CS putter, I have 3 more weeks till my LAB 3.0 with BGT Stability Tour One gets here. This will take some adjustment time probably as I want to make this my go to gamer as my Enroll has been so good for a blade putter that it will always end up being my back up putter as I have the BGT Stability Fire Shaft in it.

Might want to take a look at the Cobra 3D putters as well.  If you like the face technology of the SIK putters they have it as well.

I use the Cleveland HB soft 10.5, most of their models can come center shafted.  Played it with a rental set and realized it lined up with my eyeline perfectly.  Will never go back to blades.  Also, changed to the golf pride cord putter grip.  I putt better with this than the center shafted expensive putters(LAB, Ping, Bettinardi).  There’s an HB 2 soft 11 that looks pretty sweet!  Cleveland doesn’t get much respect but the HB(Huntington Beach) series are really good

I’ve played blade, mid mallet, and full mallet center shafted putters with no specific preference.    Find the putter that lets you aim correctly, start the ball online, and roll the ball the right distance.

I game the CS putter style. The 2 i would highly recommend is the Makefield original. I have 2 and the LAB mezz Max, got it from MGS testing.

Both are great the makefield has the moveable interior weights such if the stroke were to change you could move some around to help keep you in the same path.

The face milling is unique too.

The LAB putter does exactly what is says it will do. It looks like the tank from Tron but after a few putts you don't even see the putter.

In either case I super highly recommend the low torque putter shaft.

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Putter - Makefield VS LH

Ball - truvis

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.

I had used an Odyssey White Steel, 2 Ball CS putter that I won in a tournament way back in 2004. Then I replaced it in October of 2022 with a Cleveland Huntington Beach 6 CS Putter. The CS style putters just seem to work for my style of putting stroke and seems to fit my eye better than anything else out there.

I have experimented with a few different putting styles, as well as different putting grips over the years. For the past 12 years or so, I'm convinced that my current left hand low putting style works best for me. My current putting grip on the Huntington Beach CS putter by Cleveland is a P2 Classic grip. Very impressed with that grip.

I use a Seemore CS putter and have never putted better! Even if you use it just for practice, that alignment aid helps one get a consistent setup, taking one more variable out of the equation.

Happy to help answer any questions you might have. 25 years and counting for center shaft putters.

What are your thoughts on a slight forward shaft lean with a center shaft putter to initiate the stroke? I have been using one for a year and a half and just started considering doing this.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this discussion. I have been researching different putters because I have felt stagnant at putting lately. I'm thinking about trying a putter with much less toe flow than my current putter. The SC Newport 2.5 I currently have might have too much for my arc.

I've been eying a HB SOFT 2 Putter – Model 8C.  It not only feels great but is also only $149.

Just switched to a Phantom X5S, absolutely love it. Been a revelation to put with. Feel like it’s just so much more or gain to square up the putter when the impact location is closer to the line with your hands.

@walkerdb7 I'm itching to try out the Phantom X5S. From everything I have read about them, the Phantom X5S sounds like an incredible putter.

Just stumbled upon this thread too. It was suggested I try out a SeeMore putter after a 2016 Club Champion fitting. I got one off of eBay and it really helped my stroke. I went back to my old White Hot #7 for a while until recently.

I wanted a putter with a little more MOI to help my forgiveness when my stroke’s off. Ultimately I ended up pulling the trigger on a PING Sigma G Kinloch C putter. It’s amazing. I cut it down to around 33” and added a Pure Grip putter grip and the feeling is great and with the center shaft I can just imagine the old SeeMore alignment aid and I feel like I’m back to more point and shoot putting which is great!

For what it's worth, I've been using CS putters for at least the last 15 years. My only experiment outside of that was a Scotty Golo 6.5 that I put in the bag last season. That didn't last long. At present, I'm playing an LAB mezz 1 max. This has been the best putter I've ever used. I wish someone would have thought of this earlier.

Yep, I have a center shafted putter or two, actually three. For years, I would take 2 or 3 different putters to the practice green before the round and see which on fit my stroke that day.

May 10, 2023, my L.A.B. Golf DF2.1 arrived. I have only taken other putters to the course since to sell them. There is no comparison between L.A.B. and other putters.

I’ve decided that instead of finding the putter that fit my swing, I was finding the putter that fought me the least. In the 200+ rounds with the DF2.1 I have averaged 27 putts per hole. But I have never felt like I have made a “bad stroke”. Sure I’ve missed putts but for speed or line. Never because I was fighting the putter.

Full disclosure, I have a friend with a MEZZ1, and I have seen him make plenty of bad strokes. Pushing or pulling the putt. But he too has not brought another putter to the course since he bought a L.A.B. 10-11 months ago.

No one actually putts SBST, everyone has at least a mild arc.

I never liked CS putters, but I just bought a LAB to try out. What makes a LAB different is much more than center shafted, also onset, press grip and completely different balance than most putters, CS or not. Onset resolves my past issue with center shafted, actually turns it into a significant positive re: alignment IME.

IMO the only way to find out if a putter works for you is to try it on course for a long period. It takes a while to adjust to any new putter - the more different the tech, the longer it may take. Picking up a putter and rolling a dozen putts in a store isn’t likely to tell you much.

Asking others about which putter to choose is like asking what pizza is best. We all have different needs/preferences. There is no right answer for all…

I’d hazard that it’s more feel than science and therefore a simple process. Go to your of store of choice, pick a few putters you like the look of down by the ball, and like the weight of. Hit a few balls and pick the one you like best with the result that best reflects what you thought you’d hit for line and length, and don’t be put off if that’s a $100 putter and not a premium price affair. Your scorecards don’t come with pictures. They don’t ask how, they ask how many, and other cliches.

It is funny, I have a lot of expensive classic Scotty's, that look and feel beautiful. And I just ordered a new Lab golf DF3 putter.....my rationale is anything that will save me strokes on the course is worth the investment and worth trying. I don't have the putter yet, so who knows how it will perform against my Scotty's but why not try.....?

I have been gaming a LAB Mezz Max for a few months and can say I have never hit so many 1 putts in my life. I love the putter and am so glad that I made the change. I will also agree that the remote fitting is definitely worth it.
