INTRODUCTION:

Hello again, fellow spies! Although I am known as "funkyjudge" (a nickname that I have had for more than 20 years), my name is actually Doug Mael. I am a semi-retired Professional Clubfitter and Clubmaker, and I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania (about 25 miles from Philadelphia and 10-12 miles from Trenton, NJ). I'm 75 years old as of last month, and have been playing golf for 39 years. I'm a competitive golfer and play in several leagues, and on two travel golf teams, plus on a winter golf tour that plays mostly in NJ plus the occasional tournament in PA. I'm also a traveling golfer, and take frequent golf trips throughout the USA and in the British Isles (mostly Scotland and NW England).

Until a couple of bouts with cancer and some other serious illnesses over the past 7 years, I played to a single-digit handicap. However, my handicap is currently 14.5 and I have only been below a 13 Index twice in the last 5 years.

Because I have prior experience with Squairz golf shoes, I am really excited to be included in this test. I currently own three pairs of Squairz shoes, and the two pairs that are newer than my 5 year old pair of original Squairz are in my regular golf shoe rotation. These two pairs (Speed Bold in black and Arrow model in red, white and blue — mostly white) are both very comfortable and supportive. However, I'm especially interested in the VELO model from Squairz because they are about a pound per pair lighter in weight and have the new comfort-fit foam footbed, both of which are targeted to provide greater walking comfort on the golf course .... did I mention that I almost always walk the course, often while carrying my clubs?

If these shoes are as comfortable and lightweight as advertised, while still providing superior support and stability, they will DEFINITELY be a regular fixture in my golf shoe lineup and rotation.

 

UNBOXING AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

My Squairz VELO shoes arrived this afternoon (it's nice to have the Squairz warehouse less than 30 miles from my house!)

I was very pleased with the appearance of the shoes and the "bonus" Squairz socks, plus the nice little note on the inside of the box top:

My first impressions are VERY positive! The shoes look and feel great, and I have been walking around in the house with them on for almost an hour now.  They are not only quite stylish, they also feel nice and are lighter on the feet than my other earlier-generation Squairz shoes.

As long as the weather is cooperative next week (unlike this week, when we have had more than 5.75 inches of rain and scattered thunderstorms), I will be playing three rounds of golf while wearing these Squairz VELO shoes between next Monday and Thursday.  I will post updated impressions and data after I get them out on the course and put them to the "playing test".

Second Round with the Squairz VELO Shoes:

I played 18 holes this morning wearing the Squairz VELO shoes. Although carts were required, I walked the full 18 and let my playing partner have the cart. I have to say that these Squairz shoes are not totally comfortable for me when walking 18 holes on a hilly course, and around the 14th or 15th hole I started to get cramps in both of my arches. I really miss having my custom orthotics in the shoes!  I communicated with the Moderators/Test Leaders and they said by all means that I should install my preferred orthotics in these Squairz shoes (as I have done in every pair of Squairz shoes that I own), and that has been done.  The shoes already feel 100% better on my feet!  Unfortunately, there will be no updates at all this week, as I am very sick (looks like it's RSV) and I won't be playing any golf for several days.

4/29/24 Update (another six rounds in the books):

I have now worn the Squairz VELO shoes for six more rounds (three 9-holers and three 18-holers). This makes it eight total rounds that I have played while wearing the Squairz VELO shoes (five 18-hole rounds and three 9-hole rounds). In more than half of these rounds, I have walked and in the other three I rode in a cart because I was recovering from two weeks with pneumonia. After my first nine-hole walking round about 3.5 weeks ago, I put a pair of Protalus orthotic insoles in these VELO shoes because I have very high arches and I got cramps in the arches of my feet. I have not had any foot pain since then, and the shoes have been very comfortable for walking 18 holes, even on two consecutive days and 3 out of 4 consecutive days last week.

These VELO shoes continue to provide fantastic support and they are considerably lighter in weight than any other Squairz golf shoes that I have previously worn. The weight difference is fairly noticeable after walking 18 holes (16,000-plus steps).

I cannot say whether these Squairz shoes have helped me to increase my clubhead speed, and in fairness because I have been wearing Squairz shoes for more than two years before I was selected to participate in this test, I seriously doubt that I am experiencing further gains in clubhead speed. However, the stability that is provided by these shoes certainly gives me the confidence to “swing aggressively” and I have consistently been hitting the ball as far or farther than I generally hit it with all of the clubs in my bag.

I am definitely very happy with these golf shoes, and with the great stability and support that they provide!

Introduction:

 

Well, it’s time to address the elephant in the room…I can’t do wheelies. At best I can maybe pull the front tire of a bicycle off the ground for all of maybe a second….

 

My name is Branden last name is Wheeler, everyone I work with calls me Wheels,  wasn’t sure if that handle was taken so I went with wheelieb. I am 38 years old, live in Virginia close to Yorktown. I started golfing regularly in 2020 but had played numerous times before then. On my deployment in 2017 while in Germany, we tried to go to a course and play out in town, but you need what is called a “Platzreife”.  So, base course it was while there. I am a well-traveled person as this coming October I will have visited my 5th continent by going to South America. It’s time, though, to call it a career and move on to the next one.

 

After my deployment in 2017, the guy I golfed with left and transferred across the States I then  didn’t touch any clubs until 2019 when I got an old Top Flite set from one of the guys I worked with. Naturally, I needed to get shoes. And the first pair of shoes I got were Adidas Tech Response 2.0. I learned real quick that in Florida, you can count on it raining at least weekly. Now add the Adidas Tech Response just left my feet in a soupy shoe. To mitigate this, I decided to buy some Adidas Code Chaos BOA spikeless shoes. They were Waterproof and spikeless. They were 100 times more comfortable as well. Virginia doesn’t get as much rain and actually gets dry. I went looking for a new pair of shoes that were breathable and found the NIKE Roshe G spikeless shoe.  However, I needed to find a new waterproof shoe, and found the FJ Superlites XP and FJ Tour X

 

With that out of the way, what I will be looking for is comfort and little foot fatigue across 18 holes. With the shoes being breathable, yet waterproof, I am looking to see if my feet stay drier than my other waterproof shoes. Right now, my driver club head speed is between 109-110 mph so, if I reach 111-112 mph on average while testing that would be a confirmed claim. I have a pretty good dispersion front to back, but side to side I need to bring that in to hit more fairways. With the claim they help with better dispersion, I feel that is also a bold claim. That will be seen with my on course testing. I am also interested in seeing how the AI-generated “Smart-Traction” system works and if it keeps me from slipping while swinging.

I am excited to get these shoes and put them through the ringer to not only see if the claims are true but also how well they hold up in not only wet environment, but dry environment as well. 

Unboxing/First Impressions:

 

After receiving the box, I was ecstatic to open it up. I’m not used to receiving shoes through the mail, so to open these and see they brightness of the white and the nice blue accents was great. 

 

The note and the pair of socks were quite a surprise. While I was able to talk with Mr. Winskowicz, I felt getting that call didn’t prepare me for the way they were actually going to look. To say I was surprised is not a good enough word to use to describe them. Yes, the pictures online give you an idea of what they look like. For me, it was something I wasn’t used to seeing where they were way better in person.  

The next thing that caught my eye were these small square things on the laces. Talking with Mr. Winskowicz I learned that these were part of the lace lock system. This will definitely be something that is going to be tested to see if this keeps the shoes tight and not allow them to become loose.  

My next observation was noticing that the toe was actually more square than what I thought it would be. This not a bad thing aesthetically. I actually like the look of that squared off toe vice a rounded toe for golf shoes. That’s a surprise for me as I am not a fan of squared toed shoes. Doesn’t matter if they are boots either. I’m just not a fan of them. 

Admittedly, I really didn’t know much about the company. With that said, any company claiming they can possibly give you up to two mph swing speed has got to be at the top of the list to try, right? And here I am about to try them. The big thing I noticed when I put them in, the tongue of the shoe didn’t slide down either the left or right side of the shoe. It stayed on top of my foot where it is supposed to be. That is a big plus. 

Also, please forgive my not so hairy ankles as my work boots basically rip the hairs out. I have to say that wearing them, I don’t really feel like I’m wearing spike golf shoes. I did think that was going to take some time getting used to, but I can honestly say that it couldn’t be any further from the truth. I have wide feet as well. Wide enough my wife tells me I have “duck feet” all the time. I think she’s just jealous that I swim faster than her. But the shoes didn’t feel constrictive, while also didn’t feel loose. It was a comfy fit. I’m looking forward to getting these out on the course to test the waterproof claims, but also to see if they are breathable. If there’s no breathability and my feet are just as wet as the Atlantic Ocean, I may have to figure out why my feet sweat with golf shoes but not others.

Unboxing/First Impression

Introduction

I am an Brit ex-pat professional engineer living in Central Indiana. After  a golfing hiatus from ~2002-2022 the golf bug well and truly bit. Pre-‘02 I was playing to an approx 5 handicap, which is my target for this year (currently a 7.1HCP). I play a variety of public courses around the greater Indianapolis area (not a member anywhere right now) but most regularly at my local 9-hole muni, where I’ll be starting weekly league golf soon. I am a member of an indoor golf training center with sims and indoor putting area.

Shoe stuff and test plan:

Feet: I’m typically a size 12 to 12.5 depending on brand. I will be comparing the Sqairz to my current shoes: Ecco Biom C4 Gore-Tex & Adidas CodeChaos ’22 (MGS 2023 winner I believe). I will use these two shoes to compare for:

• Style/ appearance
• Fabric/ materials
• Fit
• Comfort
• Grip
• Performance in varying weather (rain, heat, cold etc)
• Wear rate (initially at least)
• Design claims

Indoor sim: I will use a few sim sessions switching shoes mid-session to see if I gain any real speed in line with Sqairz’ claims.

Outdoors: The shoes will be used both at practice/ range (1-2x per week, inc chipping and putting practice) and on-course. I will be walking my local 9-hole muni 1-2x/week as well as some 18-hole full rounds.

I am quite picky when it comes to footwear. When I settled on Ecco last spring, I must have ordered and returned 7 or 8 different pairs of shoes from a number of manufacturers, as well as trying on countless pairs at Golf Galaxy and PGASS stores. I tend to be pretty brand loyal once I find something that works (I’ve stuck with Altra runners for ~7 years). Neither Ecco nor Adidas shoes are perfect for me (the latter have impressed so far though), so the spot in my bag (or on my feet) is open to challengers. This will be the first time I've even tried on Sqairz shoes.

First Impressions (10/10):

After a wee delay, testing is back on track after the shoes were received yesterday. The shoes were packaged well and came with a free pair of Sqairz branded socks and a personalized note from the owner, which is a nice touch.

The Velo shoes are aimed at “Pro Performance & Power Hitters”, with the following features:
- “Sta-Put lacing system has printed silicone on the top of the lace to lock in comfort and performance without ever having to tie the laces again throughout the round.” - I’ll see how long the little silicone nodules “sta-put” through use.
- “Breathable textured tongue and collar lining forms to your foot for unrivaled comfort and airflow.”- it’s starting to warm up here in the Mid-West, so breathability will definitely be tested and welcomed!
- “Heel stabilizer that runs from the heel to the arch for integrated arch support.”- stability and arch support are important factors for me, so I hope this will prove to be true.
- “Dual-density compression foam footbed provides immediate step-in comfort.”- sounds good to me.
- “New lightweight responsive NRG-Foam midsole delivers optimal comfort and increases energy return.”- this is the big claim most people will be interested in. This will be tested on the sim, where I can get some real data!
- “Breathable textured tongue and collar lining forms to your foot for unraveled comfort and airflow.”- Sounds a bit like memory foam. We’ll see how the comfort levels last through use.

Aesthetics (10/10):

The shoes are a very smart modern style. I really like the design and feel of the materials used- these shoes even passed the spouse check! I just hope they last well. I couldn't find any manufacturing defects and everything looks well put together.

The sole features fairly aggressive tread patterns along with three soft spikes in each of the forefoot and heel/ aft foot areas. Midsole is a medium firmness foam. The heel has a hard cup in gloss black, which must be the stabilizer listed in the above features.
There is a pull tab at the heel and it was interesting to see the shoe liner fabric wraps over the heel, thus avoiding a seam along the top of the heel. I wonder if this is more long-lasting than the average heel seam across the top.

The outer material has a slightly velour type feel to it. Not shiny, but not all that soft and plush either. How much it marks up and how easy it is cleaned remains to be seen, but it has a real nice quality feel to it. Additionally, the areas with the fine white lines in the direction across the top of the foot cover firmer supporting panels rather than continued standard outer. These add to the mid foot structural stability.
The removable insoles are pretty standard, with what appears to be shock-absorbing material in the heel and ball of the foot.

According to a couple of web searches, my foot shape is close to a ‘Roman’ type.

My foot is fairly wide and shoe toe box space is always a concern. The square toe section provides a little more space in front of my 2nd & 3rd toes than my more traditionally curved and tapered Ecco and Adidas.
There is more forefoot width than the Ecco I used most of last year, which is a great positive and I had to go up a half size to gain the width/ space needed in the Adidas.

I went to a local golf course to use the practice greens to get some chipping, bunker and putting practice in. I can’t swing full speed due to a muscular strain, but chipping and putting is fine. To be fair, those are the areas I most need to work on!lol

The Velo seems very comfortable, with the thick cushioning around the heel box and a minimally thick (but comfortable enough) liner through the rest of the mid and forefoot). However, the shoe also seems structurally very supportive. I thought the midsole might feel too soft, but on a very limited first wear and test, they have a good balance of support and comfort. Sole grip seems very good, as expected with soft spikes and moderately aggressive moulded tread. The sole is sufficiently soft and pliable to make walking on hard-top and driving straightforward and comfortable. On sloping turf and sand the shoes felt stable and gripped well. All round positive first experience wearing them.

My name is Bill Pierce and like many readers here I have a golf addiction.  I hear admitting this is the first step?  Mind wanders… Golf trip to Ireland anyone?

Let me start by saying, that I am excited for this review, as I already own a pair of almost 3 year old Sqairz with its “torque generation system’!

Previously, I shared comments here on a golf shoe thread and one of the members wrote the square toe reminded him “I need to bring my blunderbuss along with me to the course” (hinting that it looked like a Pilgrim shoe?).  Every time I lace them up I can hear his comment!!! 

I love the humor and sharing of opinions here at MyGolfSpy and as a long-time reader of reviews, many of the items in my bag (e.g. Ping 425 SFT fairway woods) come direct from reviews provided here and I want to return that favor back to our wonderful community!

A bit about me: I run technology for my company (nerd alert) and at 61 years old (geezer alert) and after elbow surgery for tennis elbow (from golf) and some pretty severe disc compression issues and arthritis in my back – let’s say I can’t swing or go at it as hard as I once could! Why did I share all of that? I hope to be a beacon reviewer for all the slightly hobbled oldies looking for a reviewer like themselves. Or if you like humor (see my jokes posts on the forum) I am your guy!

Some background on my game:

I started golf in my thirties and will say that my game has gone up and down over the last 15 years… with post-surgery some terrible rounds and scores making me almost want to quit golf. Recently shot 87 and for me and lately that is a good score --though I hover in that range if I don’t blow up a hole or two. Where is my weakness: I tend to give up most of my score on wedges (chunk them) and putting and if you look at my posts, you will see the quest for new wedges (I still can’t pick, but will watch the testing reviews closely) and putter This will be my first season using my new Sacks Parente Mallet, I remain hopeful that the three putts end.

 

Some thoughts on the Shoe and how to test:

I am not a shoe fanatic guy, but I do have four pairs currently. One of them as stated is a pair of Sqairz. Some thoughts on my legacy pair from this vendor:

1.     My current Sqairz is a VERY stable shoe.  You can absolutely feel the stability.

2.     For those with wide feet, sqairz is worth a look.

3.     I find the shoe comfortable but a bit hot when the temperatures sore, it will be nice to see if the new sqairz are more breathable.

4.     Waterproof features work well (maybe why they are hot?)

5.     They pick up a lot of turf, particularly on wet courses. It did annoy me at times as last year was so rainy. I was either using other shoes or constantly banging turf out of the cleats and tracks.

6.     Regarding ‘speed’ pick up – I never tested them for that but will say if you are a good ground force player, I am sure you are bound to pick up 2-4mph.  As my back is not like it once was, I will not push myself to those limits, it would probably cause downtime!

7.     Aesthetics / Looks wise I think the Blunderbuss comment may be rude, but not far off

These attributes will set a good baseline to compare!

I play north of Boston Mass, southern Maine and Down East Maine areas so much cooler and more wet conditions compared to the North Carolina course that I previously played on (and often in rough condition due to winter damage/weather). I love to walk the courses if I can, as I don’t get enough physical stimulation from my desk job. So, that means both performance and comfort are critical to me in a shoe. Let’s list the areas I see critical for testing in a shoe:

A.     Comfort – is the shoe constricting around my toes? Support the arches but not hurt, is it breathable or will my feet make the inside feel like it rained in there!

B.     Traction – does the shoe prevent slippage, grip enough but not too much?

C.    Stability – how stable is my balance, weight transfer, torque? Does the foot roll in the shoe?

D.    Aesthetics – How sexy are the shoes? (guess my bias will come out here)

I plan on testing three of my shoes side by side to observe differences:

1.     My original sqairz to get a baseline of how the shoe line is improving and has some of my pet peeves been addressed!

2.     My Puma spikeless because they are super comfy, but to be honest I think I lose torque so this will be a good performance  test comparison.

3.     The new sqairz and see how fit, stability, performance, aesthetics and all play out.

One core component of testing will be using the GC Quad and putting the models to tests with different shots and scenarios… probably focus on three clubs – Driver, fairway wood and Wedge and see the distance impact for each shoe. If the weather cooperates (and we got a small amount of snow this week) I want to do a thorough test over a number of rounds and in different weather conditions (wet and dry but not snow!).

These two series of test combined, should easily tell us about a number of factors like comfort, grip, stability, waterproofing and how they actually look and feel during normal use. Weather and course conditions permitting, I'll probably be walking 9-holes at my local 9-hole course that is very wet in places and undulating and should be a good test for the shoes.

That said, I am working out my testing plan and have an ask to the community: can you all send me what numbers on the GCQuad you want to see? Ball Speed? Distance? AofA? < what tells us the shoe performs as claimed?

I have a very open mind to the brand and will use my prior experience with the shoes factor in testing, but hopefully not too much bias. If the new shoes ace all of the testing criteria -- they will be keepers and become my number 1 shoe!

In conclusion, you are on this journey with me, my humor should come through, and this will be fun. Now let’s start the testing!
