If money was truly no object I'd hire Emmanuelle Chriqui to follow me around the course with a laser and a GPS and give me yardages.

Wow... Nice choice 👍

But on the forum topic: forget which manufacturer but one (at least) was making a hybrid device .. a laser combined with a GPS unit on the side.

I use a basic Garmin S2 which gives you front/back/center and on doglegs distance to the middle of the turn. No hazards in this model.

I've found it to be accurate to usually 2 yards, +/-, compared to lasers and course markers.

(Which, yes, is way way waaaaay inside my usual dispersion/proximity.)

You also get occasional software updates which include course corrections. Can also measure shots with it.

I also do a quick walk-off if I'm near the 100 or 150 marker (a) to try to learn the feel of those approach distances, and (B) as a backup in case the watch dies (or... I've forgotten it....).

Use GPS on the phone (one that seems useful is Swing By Swing) at home before playing a new course (don't really like futzing with it during play).

Also for checking out a new course layout MeasureLotSize.com is pretty handy - can search for a course and set markers onto spots you select.

I use my leupold gx 2i. Switched from Bushnell and locks onto the pin within seconds. I love this except that i found out ive been wrong on all my shot measurements when the flag is not in the centre of the green ( as yardages on scorecard are always to centre of green and a stupid oversight on my part).but otherwise i prefer the rangefinder

if money were no object i would upgrade to the Leupold GX 4i

I use a Bushnell Tour X, I almost always use the slope feature too as I no longer play in any sanctioned tournaments.   I also have a Garmin G-8 that I will use on courses that are new to me or that I play very infrequently.

I'm a little surprised I missed this post last summer. Also surprised only 37 people voted. Guess StrokerAce should have offered some free stuff. LOL But since it's been revived today I'll add my two cents.

I use a SkyCaddie GPS mostly for distances to greens. F,M,B. I also used a LRF for other purposes such as carries, bunkers, obstacles, etc, etc. Day in day out on a course I'm familiar with I rely on my GPS about 80% of the time. My LRF is useless for me to pin-point an exact pin placement. My game just isn't accurate enough to let a few yards matter. Like Rev discussed... in general if the pin is front I'll hit 1/2-1 club more and 1/2-1 club less for back pins. I've found on most courses generally speaking; being long is far worse than being short.

My Sun Mountain bag currently includes:   TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png 771CSI 5i - PW and TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png PFC Micro Tour-c 52°, 56°, 60 wedges

I like the laser too (Bushnell v3), and most of my cheapskate buddies constantly ask "how far to that bunker? How far to that tree?" I use it almost exclusively on familiar courses where they use different flag colors or daily pin placements.

I also use the swing by swing app on my phone to keep stats and scores, so on unfamiliar courses I can figure out what trouble lies ahead with that.

I haven't ever used a laser rangefinder, I honestly haven't even seen another golfer use one in my circles. Almost everyone at my club uses an iPhone app to track yardages and scores.

I started this season using The Grint as I really enjoyed their stat tracking and their GPS. They issued an update to the app in the late spring that made scoring a round super fast and very easy. The app allows you to toggle between GPS and scoring on each hole. I really enjoy The Grint, but for spot on GPS yardages I have been using 18 Birdies most recently. It's not as robust as the Grint in the scoring department, but the yardages are awesome. All the guys I play with have started using 18 Birdies as well.

In my opinion the rangefinders seem to have been replaced by iPhone apps. They are easier to use and much more affordable.

My father caddies for me in tournaments and he and I have a system where we go to the driving range in the evenings when it's really quiet. Then I hit balls out onto the range while he stands out there and tracks them down, once he finds it he uses a range finder to see how far the ball travelled and we'll average around 10 or 20 shots to get a rough idea of what I'm hitting. I've found the trick is to pick a target in the distance you have no chance of getting to and using that as a target line. I'd love to use a simulator or launch monitor but I don't have access to either of those right now so I'll make the most of what I got.

I use a laser that has slope. The last two rounds I've played I just tried out the yardage my Golfshot app puts out and it was pretty dead-on. I generally only use the app for keeping score, and for measuring drives. Otherwise, I laser the pin all the time.

If I had to choose....

Tough to say. If I were playing different courses all the time, I'd want an app/GPS to see the hole layout. I played a new course a few months back and I had no idea where the fairways were on many of the holes because of blind tee shots. I'd want a laser with a built-in course map screen!!!!

I'm a little surprised no one mention the Swing by Swing app. I find it the best free app I've used. And I'm terrible at times. If I didn't have it I might as well play from the ladies tee. It has an option where you can press you finger on the screen, anywhere on the hole and it will tell you how far you are from that spot. In case you need to lay up because a hazard or what not. I believe it's fairly accurate and I won't use anything else.

I've used it .. but only pre-round to scope out a new course; don't like using these kinds of things during play.

Also, after they added more and more features I kinda fell out of love with it. There are others, also free, that are a little "cleaner" IMHO and also can give you distance from your location to center of the green.

I bought a garmin G8 late in the season this year to replace my golf buddy, that I had for 8 years or so, that broke. The golf buddy was pretty good but there were lots of uploads and there were times when it was way off. The Garmin G8 has been awesome! I can move the pin easily, it have arcs for layup distances and I can easily move the cursor to find distances to hazards. I can't speak highly enough of it!

Virtally every course I play here in South Florida now offers accurate yardages right from the cart, but there are still times when the 'local knowledge' factor comes into play!

There are certain shots where despite what the cart's yardage monitor says, I just know the shot plays a bit longer or shorter than what the yardage says!  To me that kind of 'local knowledge; still matters quite a bit!.. :)

FYI just downloaded "Golfler" (with an extra "l") -- lets you place TWO distance markers on a hole. Only drawback is you have to be ON the course .. always uses your current location so you cannot use it at home pre-round....

I think a lot of the guys here, myself included, walk more frequently so they're talking more about either wearable or hand-held devices.

But I think all will agree with your point about adjusting the actual distance to a "plays like" yardage!
