The wind maybe have taken a day off on Saturday but was back with a vengeance on Sunday. It was hard to control anything, even putts. Got spoiled by the slower greens at the muni the day before and forgot that everything is rock hard, dry, and fast back home. I did have some fun with the temporary tee boxes though.

#4 moved to in front of the creek. I usually don't have my driver for this hole but decided to go for it. I had to have hit the cart path because there is no way I was actually going to make it. It should say something when I've already given up by the 4th hole and decided to just take stupid risks and have fun.

image.png.9b55a365129d45b88003151feba6683f.png

#11 I had a mishit but there was so much wind behind me it didn't matter. I caught the last bit of fairway bunker but the sand was so hard packed, it came out and rolled up to the green. Almost got the eagle but I was happy with the birdie.

image.png.f3ade2580fa83e7a6b42a7f87fca7879.png

Last one isn't a good story. #15 - I hate this hole sometimes. First, this hole runs East to West. Wind  has reached "stupid speed" at this point as is allegedly out of the South. Regardless, sitting on the tee box, it's funneling out of the East. I decide to take some off my 4h just in case I get some extra distance. That was a good call. I got about 25-30 extra yards on my tee shot. Shot #2, I wanted to hit a really high 9i over the 1 tree some idiot planted in front of the green 30 years ago. Should work out, I have the wind at my back, opening up the fact a bit with some wind help, and I should hit my mark. I make some great contact and watch in amazement as my ball seemingly stops in mid air, doesn't actually hit the tree but instead just falls down it plinko style. Eventually, the ball makes it's way down the tree and rolls into the water. First penalty I've had in a long time.

Still confused about how any of that just happened. I get in my cart and head to the drop zone.  Remember that "South" wind that was behind me on the tee box and my 2nd shot? Well, now it's funneling out of the West. . . I could see the wind literally pushing the water straight down in the pond as I went over the bridge. It made no sense. 2nd shot, wind behind me. When I got to the drop zone, the wind was in front of me. With the big hill going up to the green and the 30+ mph wind in my face, even a full swing on my 54* wasn't enough to get near the pin.

image.png.0ed58ce22f64c856449b3ef7a1a52bd6.png

It was just a rough day. I almost went home after 9 holes just to get out of the wind. I lost count of the number of times I had to interrupt my swing because the wind almost knocked me over or wait on a putt since the wind started moving the ball on me. On a lighter note, I was killing my drives (when the wind was behind me lol). I had many in the 300+ group. Also many in the less than 250 group but yeah, nothing to see there. Probably one of my best struck drives was on #7. Directly into the wind and over a pond from the tee box. I put it right down the middle and easily would have been a 300 yrd drive any other day. How far did it go you ask? 217.

Oh man Snicerz... I was rolling reading through your post... I SO wishi I could have seen that hole play out in person.  The water spigot is the best part!  I hope you can find some humor in it... I did!! 🙂  Golf is a humbling game, isn't it??

Yeah, I'm of the mind that you have to have fun with whatever you are doing. Sometimes, it's the weird stuff like this that is just ridiculous enough to help you forget about all the crap/stress in your life. Funny how a terrible shot can be the positive highlight of your day.

Related to that... be ready for the May Member/Guest Tourney.... Teams have to be made up of a player that have posted a score in the WVCT, and a player that hasn't... I'm clever like that haha. 🙂

Our course aerated greens last fall.  Grass recovered quickly because it was still growing.  When they aerate in the spring, the grass is just starting to grow again, but it's slow... it's still almost freezing at night and highs have only been in the 50's.  Of course, the wind blows a lot this time of year and the sand doesn't stay in the holes.  It will take quite awhile before we get decent greens to putt on, and I was putting so well before they aerated when stimp was around 12.

Not sure of your side of the Gorge, but the rain on this side doesn't help either.  I have to call ahead this time of year as most courses around here are punching.  Everytime I think I get a good deal on GN, the greens are punched.  Happened last year at Forest Hills and Eastmoreland.  Fortunately, I seem to putt better on sanded greens. 🤷‍♂️

Blowup holes run the round

This looks to be a course about my speed.  I should make a point to try it out whenever I can get down there next, which isn't often.  I can't hit anything very long and my long clubs are terrible, so a nice short course hits my strengths.  I love these for approach, shortgame and putting practice.  I don't always do well though, those are the areas that suffer most when things are a bit off.

So the rough average distance of the par 3’s is about 150 yards. Some are longer and a couple are shorter.
There is a course called Angel Park Cloud 9 that is about 100- 120yards per hole. If you go during the day, there are 12 holes. Night time is only 9. Give that a look when you come. Lots of approach and short game opportunities on that course.

Rain is not an issue.  It does rain but not constantly like your side of the Cascades.  When it rains, it’s not very hard and doesn’t last very long.  Most courses are sandy soil so soaks in quickly.  Our problem is wind.  When greens are punched and sanded and the wind comes up, the sand blows out of the punches, so it takes longer to heal.

My wife and I have a full annual membership at our muni, so we play 98% of our local rounds here.  Hard decision to play elsewhere when we have already paid for the year!  We do like to travel to courses outside our area; we have a trip planned for Bend/Redmond/Sisters on May 14.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Joined 3 gentlemen playing the gold tees, so I played with them. Good opportunity to use the Sub70 699u from the tee on the holes where driver would reach the danger surrounding greens. Had some of my best results hitting the 24° iron off the tee about 165y to the FW and approach with 3h 195y or 5h 170y. Lost 8 strokes on 3 bad holes.

Putting was bad, not a high number but 1 went in for birdie that was running so fast it had no right to fall, hit the pin square and went in. In my mind that birdie was executed like my normal gir 3 putt bogey, I just got lucky. I also missed multiple 2 footers.

Par 3 #4 playing 130y I hit a 9i high stayed left of the green the entire time, you'd say from the tee "ok pin high left" but I get up to it a tree branch had knocked it down and the bounce went behind said tree. I closed the face on my vokey and proceed to hit the ball off same tree square, over my head and OB. Go get it in thorn bushes, drop in a spot that will roll away from the trunk a bit and hit the same shot with a better angle to the fringe. Get shot 5 to about 15ft away but hit a bad lag putt. Walk up and nail the 6 footer. Go back, add up the score. The 6 footer, first putt outside 2ft to go in, didn't matter. 7 is maximum on the hole.

Played #5-12 at +1 I was hitting the ball well the whole time, and the lucky putt dropped on #12. Immediately gave the strokes back double-double on 13-14 before bogey on the final 4 I was no longer reading my putts very closely kinda quit after the double on 14. 7i to the sand felt like it was going to be a 3rd birdie chance and walking up to it in the sand drained the energy I had left.

Finding a way to turn birdies into bogeys since 1992. #TeamChunks

Thanks for doing this on top of all the other MGS you do. I can’t imagine how much work needs to get done for a forum that puts the content it does. You guys are awesome.

cor the long drive I do have 3 other guys that can vouch on it. We couldn’t believe where the ball ended up. For anyone that has played Gerhart hole #9, when you get up by the green the fairway slopes towards the green and right. We all thought my ball was up by the tree close to the tall wispy grass. That’s where I took the cart to look. My other partners went up to the green after their 2nd shots. My cart partner took the cart to the green. After looking and not finding my ball I was walking back to the cart and noticed a ball on the back side of the green. Playing partner said it was there when they got there & didn’t look at it as there was no way that was my ball. I mark my balls with 3 dots by each number and initial J.  I got to the green and asked who’s ball that was. I figured why not check it out. I was 30’ away and saw something red and ohhh, I think that’s my ball at the same time going “no wayyy”.  Walked up and was like YES SIR BABY THAT MY flipping ball.  2 putted for bird. Only thing we figure happened is it caught the slope just right and rolled on past the twosome on the green, oops.

long winded story to say “ what a lucky freaking shot”.

I think we talked about his shot the week it happened.  But yes, I have played Gearhart, and I know exactly the layout you describe.  It would STILL have to be a big drive to catch that slope just right... perfect scenario and perfect drive.  nicely done JFish 🙂

WEEKLY VIRTUAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR

======================================================

WEEK 27 and SEASON 1 is in the books!!

What a TREMENDOUS way to end the season - 31 scores posted this month... and over the course of the 27 weeks... 516 individual scores from 49 unique members posted to the MGS Forum Member Weekly Virtual Championship Tour thread.  WOW GUYS!! That is AWESOME.

Week 27 Results

Week 27 Winners

Low Net Score

image.png

image.png

@fozcycle was back in full force during Week 27 and not letting anyone else even close to his victory march at Silverado.  Foz posted a 78 gross / and is this week's winner of the Low Net Score by 5 strokes with his net 4 under (-4) round.  Stellar Play Foz!.  As you can imagine, he also led the week with 7 net birdies or better - but this week, Foz will be wearing the Low Net Black Jacket Badge on his profile.  Congratulations Foz!!

Most Birdies or Better

Leaving room to highlight some other great rounds - Foz's 7 net birdies or better was closely followed by @daviddvm and @PeterHenric each posting 6 Net Birdies or Better, and have both won the Birdie Badge for this week.  Great playing guys!!

Longest Drive

image.png

image.png

Soon to be dubbed "The Snicerz Badge".  Several drives this week in the 290+ range - but only one crested the 300 mark.  @snicerz is this week's winner of the Long Drive Badge with a 302 yard drive at Surrey Hills.

Again - Congrats to all this week's winners, and another HUGE thank you to everyone that participated throughout the year.

As such... I thought I would highlight some of the season's best.

Lowest Net Score of the year was @MattF in Week 3 at Windmill Lakes GC.  Matt carded at Gross 76 / Net 61 - 9 UNDER (-9). image.png

Most Net Birdies for the whole of Season 1 goes to @Mr. Mushball playing Sah-Hah-Lee in Week 17 with ELEVEN (11) Net Birdies or Better during his round. image.png

And the Longest Drive of Season 1 was posted in Week 7 at Gearhart Links in Oregon.  @JFish350 must have found Highway 101 with his ball as he carded a 383 yard drive.  What?!?  Yep... 383 yards!image.png

Be sure to check out the Season 1 Year Long MGS Forum Cup Points Race thread

for the Final Results and this year's Forum Cup CHAMP - which will be posted later today.

Great Season!

Excited for all our Season 1 WVCT Players and all the NEW WVCT Players to bring your games in Season 2!!

PLAY OFTEN / POST OFTEN!!

Thanks for all the hard work in setting up and managing season 1. I can't wait to enter scores for season 2 , but given the northern folks are just starting - I'll bet there'll be a lot more competition

p.s. maybe we should set up flights? just asking
