How'd you play?

Hard to believe got my first round in what I used to call my playing partner @GolfSpy_BOSbut between moves and other personal life stuff we have not. Hopefully more soon

42 with 4 pars, 4 bogeys and a double to finish.

Driving was good, 3 wood was , wedges from pretty much anywhere were  and putting finally got on track. No 3 putts and started making the 5' or less stuff again....so how did a shoot a +6 you ask? Piss poor irons.

Had penalties on both par 3's because apparently my ball was thirsty...wasn't even a @Yellow Ball...Would have felt like a much nicer round if I had those 2 shots back.

Had several heavy handed approach shots and just really bad alignment issues from 120-150 after great tee shots. Was just dropping my back shoulder. Another 9 would have been nice. Besides those few miss que's the swing felt great, maybe it will all come together next round.

Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights this morning.  Bit of a rush again to get there and started on time so it took me a few holes to get settled.  I forgot to grab a scorecard so we decided to go match play.

After a triple on hole one I was down one, then bogeyed two but Owen parred so I was quickly down two.  A three putt triple on three put me down three and Owen was cracking jokes .  

We both hit poor tee shots on four and got bogey so at least I didn't lose a hole!  On five Owen had a bad tee shot and a chunked chip but I three putted again and we split the hole.

On six we had good tee shots and good approaches but I hit the green on my chip while Owen overshot.  I got par to his bogey; now I'm back within two.  On the short par three seventh I hit a little runner 7 iron onto the green and made par while Owen went long again into the river.  Now I'm just one back.

On eight we took different approaches but got the same results; par for both of us.  On nine I hit my drive if the day and Owen proceeds to hit his drive of the day, about twenty yards past mine.  We both hit poor chips that missed the green and both had to chip again.  His putt just burned the edge while mine was just short, like all my putts today.  We halved that one and he won one up.  He was tracking in his head and shot +5, while Shot Scope says I was +11.  

We really like these early morning rounds but working to midnight really makes it difficult.  Sixty five minutes to play nine?? Sign me up!

Dang is feels good to post here again.

Between coaching baseball, moving, and the usual life events I haven’t been able to golf nearly as much as I’d like to this year.  That being said @Lacassem sent me a message yesterday afternoon if I could sneak out for 9 this morning before work.  Schedule allowed it so of we went!  

Played fairly well for my lack of practice and play time.  Shot a 43 and had no real major issues other than a few stray swings, and I followed mark into a pond on a par 3.

Highlight hole was #6.  Hit a great 5-wood just about as far as you can take it before a protected marsh area and hit a great 8 iron from there.  2 putt par. (EDIT:  Arccos appears to have had to much to drink at the turn and the labels are a wee bit wonky on the saved hole)

Best drive of the year so far on #9….. even if it was cart path aided!

Eagle came on 18. Par 5 and an okay drives left me 270 to the center of the green. Ripped a beautiful 3 wood and it lipped out! Left me 18 inches for an eagle!

Wow!  Nice shot.  so close to joining the albatross club!  Mine was most certainly not from 270. haha

A tap in eagle still sounds great though!

ok whatever 270 yard lip out for tap in eagle;  answer the question we all want to know about.  How did the ChipR perform?

Great shot... clean up those doubles!!  

I'm just impressed that you can see a lip-out from 270 yards!!

Got out this morning for an early morning 9 with Bacon Boyz!  
Took it easy just dropping the ball 30-50 yards from green then chip and putt for 1st 5 holes.  Last 4 stretched it out a bit up to 75 yards.  Everything was good, no knee issues except walking downhill was a bit uncomfortable.  
Great to get out and solve the Worlds problems with the Boyz at breakfast! 
Going out again Tuesday.

Oh the difference a day makes…

yesterday, I only played the back9, and had no less than 6 shanks… I mean it was ugly. But today, I pounded drives all day, and never shanked a ball. And scored pretty well…

3 at the best based on the types of shots I had. Most of them were pretty straight forward and had lots of green to work with. That’s where I get in trouble with my wedges because I always force myself to carry the ball further than I should.

... On bent greens back in the midwest I just flew my LW that did a hop, skid and stop and I was very comfortable with that shot other than the few times I was on a very tight lie around the green. I quickly found on bermuda it stopped quickly into the grain and rolled out quite a bit with the grain and goodness knows what it will do with 3/4 or cross grain. So getting it on the ground and rolling quickly is the best bet. But again that first landing spot can still be a problem late in the day with heavy grain as I am using my 50* wedge for every chip. I hope to go to other clubs soon but want to know how the green reacts to my 50* in all circumstances before using other irons. A chipper would seem to be ideal for these bermuda greens so I am looking forward to your thoughts down the road.

Started out +5 after 5 with a double and said nah, this just isn’t happening. 
 

Played the next 13 -1 and left a few out there. 
 

Off the tee was phenomenal today. This LAGolf DJ shaft is butter. Hit some absolute bombs with it today.

44/51 for a 95. That comes with also having and 11. Other than that 3 doubles  the rest par or bogey. Hit some good shots, some not so good. Great time with friends. Got very fatigued by the end  only my 3rd 18 of the year. This was hilly and I walked and our 630 tee time was 75* out and finished at 88*

almost dove the green on 9. Did a lot of scrambling and decent lag putting.

Double bogey on #9 for a 41, then a 39 on the back for an 80.  Should have been 78 or better, but there you have it....some stupid errors cost me and I have to live with them.  Putted well today.  Enjoying the new Edison wedges I put in my bag.  Still working on distance control with them, but I do like the feel of them, the spin that I get from them.

Managed to get in 18 this morning before temps hit 100º... about 11am.  A "nothing special" round of 82; all bogeys with a lone birdie.  I'm happy that even when I didn't hit the ball well or putt like I did last week, I avoided doubles or worse.  That's a win.  

Same time tomorrow.

Good round Randy!  I'd say this is a lot better than when you started your "improvement thread".

Been working on driver for a bit now and finally got some good results, played pretty well had some blow up holes and a bunch of missed putts but overall happy with my driving and play

I’ll start by saying yesterday was my first round with a chipper, and I had a brand new 4H and 56* in my bag also. It looks like I batted 1.000 with all of them. The Smart Sole C was phenomenal. I’d gotten very tippy around the greens, but this not only worked great on the practice green Friday, it was terrific yesterday. By the end of the round I was looking for any chance I could to use it, and there wasn’t a shot I didn’t pull off! I honestly think it’s a matter of when, not if I start holing out a few from off the green.

The 4H was like all my other Halo series clubs. Not the longest I’ve ever played, mishit’s tend to come up short but stay online. I get away with murder with these clubs. 
I took my 54&58 out of the bag and replaced them with a 56 because I needed a spot for the chipper. I only used it twice, once after driving into a pot bunker in the middle of a fairway, and one green side bunker. No issues, but I’d like to have had a few full shots with it, but the opportunity never came up.

We played a quota game, and I had to make 25 points from the 5800 yd Senior tees. I had a very good round, shot 78 and was +3 which won my flight by 3 points! The only “blemish” was a double on the par 5 18, I hit a very good drive, but it had started raining pretty hard two holes earlier, and I lost my grip on my next two swings. Both were topped about 30yds. I took of my glove for the next shot, but I had a little red a** by then and hit it over the green. Chip, 2 putts, added up to a wet, sloppy 7.

To sum it up, I could not be happier with the round. My sciatica is finally gone, I played pain free, scored well, and love the changes I made to my bag.

Excellent man excellent----- Main thing is you are pain free----- We did ok on the Shootout for what we have to work with player wise. Shot -5 which did not get jack because -11 won it which I predicted before hand. We had like 4 good strong player teams and I knew with our team it would hard to place in the slots. My bud from Ohio who is a good guy does not understand anything about golf could not figure how I could predict the top teams and scores. I told him I had played in the darn thing nearly every Saturday for 3 years and know all the games of players and the teams.  I also added that after my accident our team split up and I was a floater for a year or too and at one time or the other had played with most of them. Also played with quite a few of them in the 9 and Dines.

Had a couple of clubs in the bag I had not tried in a while. A friend of mine who used to be a Titleist Staffer gave me a new unhit Vokey SM 5 I think it is 58*. Man it hits good. Put two blasts from my past back in my bag a Vokey 252 series 52* and an old Bulls Eye putter with a round leather grip. Our course has gotten into great shape and the greens are great. I went back to my old school roots putting and putted lights out.

I am also pain free after making drastic swing changes and have been playing at least 9 holes every day

I know what you mean about knowing how teams will finish. You play with a group long enough, you just know.

I love the layout of your home course, and I’m so happy to hear it’s in great shape now!

I used to play in their shootout every week when I only came down for the winter 12-15 years ago ( man, the years fly by). They always had a little breakfast setup, 3 or 4 10’ hero’s and raffles afterward. I loved it! The owners there are locals, and couldn’t be better people.
When I played with the Flounders, we would play there 2x a year, because we wanted to support them, and they would give us a free replay coupon each time.  As the years went by, the Flounders had a lot of turnover, and the new guys complained about it so much we stopped playing there. I told the guy who runs the league, in my 15 years of playing, when he dropped them from the schedule it was the only time I was ashamed to be associated with the group.

Im glad you’re feeling better also buddy. Now if this weather would just let up a bit we’ll be firing on all cylinders!

Eh. Decided I needed to finally commit to swing changes on course. Last lesson my coach gave me both long-term changes and short-term band-aids to use. The band-aids worked well for a while, but after being out with COVID for two weeks I lost all of my feels so figured I might as well start changing things for good.

Really didn't play too poorly, but it unfortunately took about six holes to get into a groove this morning. Had a bad first nine (started on 10) going double, bogey, par, +5 (two lost tee balls), bogey (lost ball saved by excellent wedge), double, birdie, par, double.

Second nine was much better and just one or two little things here or there away from being near even par. 

Going to keep grinding and remembering the good shots that I hit this morning. The goal of the changes is to straighten my ball flight out a bit and on ones I hit well it's obviously a much improved flight (including more distance), especially with my driver. Finished the round pounding one 288 uphill, leaving me a pitching wedge into the par 5. By far the shortest club I've ever had into that green (three putted for par  from 30-40 feet).

Shot a 71 a few days ago .. for 14 holes (haha lol). Wife and I were out with another couple ... it was getting late and we were all hot and sweaty and starting to tire and hungry and thirsty and the last four holes were getting a little jammed up (and... and...) so we just finished at a short Par 3 that parallels the parking lot and bailed and all went to dinner. Did manage a few ok tee shots and few ok short approach shots; short game was a little 50-50, tho. Oh, and nailed the shot on that last par 3!

Played 9 yesterday and somehow managed to scrape together a 45 that included two Triples (ouch), one Double (yuck) and three 3-putts (whaaaat??!!??) but still had only 18 putts total .. which was more a function of chipping/pitching it close a few times for a few 1-putts. Here's the best one ...

(1) Solid tee with the 3W but landed in the right rough so no bounce and roll - to the left of where it landed is a downslope to a flat area in front of those bunkers before the green.
(2) Dunno what kinda mental lapse/brain fart/??? thing I did but had 100 to the center of the green, a clear shot and the ball decided to go its own way waaaay waaaaaay off to the right into the adjacent fairway.
(3) LW through a gap between two trees and onto the unseen green surface sloping away from me. My wife was on the other side of the green and said the ball almost ran into the flagstick and dropped in!
(4) 2 foot putt for a memorable up and down

Did hit driver twice decently - not far, but solid and into the fairway; and hit the 3W twice decently also .. and again not that far but solidly and into the fairway. The other tee shots...  Had some trouble with too many second shots but did nail one 8i and one 9i approach!!

In fact... if you zoom into this pic onto the flagstick you'll see my ball in decent proximity to the hole...

..the main path to the green goes around to the right; by the time I got there, grabbed my putter thinking ... "possible birdie going here... Cinderella story..." ... and walked onto the green my ball wasn't there! .. It had been sitting just past the edge of a slope going back down towards the front of the green, and I guess the wind had acted on it just enough to push it to where gravity took over....
(well it *is* the Law after all )

And then I 3-putted for bogey.

Man, was yesterday an adventure!  Owen and I played River Heights yesterday with our buddy Mark.  Mark usually plays a huge draw off the tee.  This time he broke out his old Cleveland Hi Bore driver from his high school days.  Now every tee shot went straight, but he couldn't adjust for most of the round so many of his tee shots went WAY right.  He's one of the better golfers I've played with so he was able to bail himself out more often than not, but it was wild to watch.

Today I was back to struggling with almost every facet of my game.  Most of my tee shots were bordering on snap hooks, as were many iron shots.  I was topping a lot of long approaches.  I hit two really bad wedges off the toe but otherwise my wedge game was really good for me and I was putting much better than I had been recently.  All longer holes were just a comedy of errors.  Usually wound up joking to myself, "Ok, hole this wedge to save bogey."  I lost two sleeves of balls. 

On the plus side, I had six up and downs.  On twelve holes I was either just off the green or hit a long putt that all left tap-ins.  Had a couple of cool-looking second shot saves that were unfortunately not the product of skill but from mis-hits and dumb luck, lol.  Spent a few extra seconds to really line up my putts and the results were good.  Overall though, its infinitely more frustrating to be decent around the green and terrible beforehand than the other way around.

Course was pretty busy and we were waiting a few times early on.  A single caught up to us and we offered to let him join us on hole six.  Colin was a lefty and played from the tips (we played from the whites) and seemed to fit pretty well with our group.  After teeing off on seven, Mark realized he'd lost his phone so he peeled off to search for it.  We let Colin play through and Owen and I hung out near the tee box on eight, letting the next couple groups play through.  Mark found his phone on hole three (!) and caught back up to us.  At the turn we were joined by our friend Randy for the back nine.  He generally has chipping yips but other than one hole he was hitting them pretty well.  Owen played his usual brand of decent golf save for a blow up on 16.

Mark shot 87, Owen 88, Randy 46 on the back nine, and I put up a sizzling 50/55 105 (+33).
