I am not 100% comfortable with my 3 wood yet, it just seems to want to go left. I know lofting a club up a degree changes the face angle, but I’ve forgotten which way it changes it. 😬  Overall I’m very happy, and just thrilled to have gotten fitted.

Old driver: Wilson Staff C300 9° Fujikura Speeder Pro 58 Stiff Regular Length

New Driver: Cobra SZ 9° (set at 10°) Tour Length PX HZRDUS Smoke Yellow Stiff

Is it longer... you tell me 😉

That's quite a jump in distance!  If the other testers see similar results, these could be on backorder for weeks or months.

hence the unconventional approach to our selection process.

I’m the only one who has pulled out the long backswing on the course. You should make @B.Boston and @edingc play an entire round with it before you give them more points than me. Let’s see if they end up anywhere other than the hospital.

Do you play for your High School Golf Team? Or do you ever play competitively? With a game like that what have you won?

I’m hopefully going to play on my college team next year, but since I’m starting college a year early, I’m not eligible to play until next year. I was going to play some competitive events over this summer, but all the COVID stuff blew up that plan.

Yeah but isn't that a Putt putt course?? 🤣

No, the way I putted today, it was only a Putt course.

It's funny how people keep coming after Boston sports teams as if we, as fans, haven't seen 12 championship titles in the past 20 years and a slew of other finals/SB appearances. I literally am out of room in my dresser drawers from all the championship t-shirts my mother-in-law insists on buying me every time a Boston-area team wins.

Well, as they say, cheating may win you titles in the short-term, but it forever tarnishes your reputation.

Yeah, I think there are a few factor in play here.

1. The C300 is notorious for being a few MPH slower than other drivers on the market. Not THAT much slower, but in conjunction with everything else, it all adds up.

2. A fitting really, really matters. I can’t stress that enough. Getting fit for the Tour Length was amazing. I’ve never been able to strike the ball consistently with a regular length driver, but absolutely can with the Tour Length. Also, I’m in a slightly stiffer shaft with much lower torque, which is allowing me to swing freely.

3. My course is getting slightly drier and firming up a touch, which is adding about 5-7 yards of roll.

Interesting. "Tour Length" shaft was never mentioned in my two driver fitting sessions. To the other testers, was that something that came up in your physical or by phone fittings?  Are any of you using a shorter than your gamer shaft length?

Yeah I’m also using Cobra’s Tour Length. It’s 44.5 vs the standard 45.5 For Cobra (with cobraconnect grips).

A lot of fitters like TXG and True Spec have all their shafts at 45 inches which is typically a littler shorter than most OEM stock lengths.

It looks immediately better to my eye. And as GB13 ’s numbers eluded to, it doesn’t have to mean you’re giving up speed or distance.

I believe edingc is also on #teamtourlength but the other two guys are not.

As long as the durability is there (which @edingc can probably attest to) I don't think there's a better value out there right now.  It has all the major features you'd be looking for at a great price.

I also love that the backpack straps on the Cobra Speedzone stand bag clip off so easily.  Once I got to the course I just took them off and left them in the trunk so it looks really clean on the cart too.

I am 20 rounds in and still loving the cart.  Maybe a ridin' dirty tiktok with the new gear in the pushcart??? That'll be the only free content idea i'll offer 😉

I’m so depressed fans won’t be at every Astros game to heckle them and will thoroughly miss the standing ovation for every one that gets pegged. Can the telecast just plug that audio in anyways? A lot of people have cheated in sports and gotten caught. It isn’t new. Many just take their lumps and move on. The Astros lack of remorse has been sickening. It honestly seems like they think they did nothing wrong.

For the SZ iron guys ... how’s the club’s wider sole width working for you? Especially if you’re coming from a smaller profile club. How’s the turf interaction? Any adjustments from a swing or mental setup standpoint?

This competition is opening my eyes to the SZ irons, but I can’t find the SZ irons in stock at any of our golf stores down here ... not Edwin Watts or Dick’s Sporting.

@GB13 damn a year early for college that’s impressive and good luck I didn’t realize you were going early. Is there any loophole to try out because if there is you need to expose it with how well you’re playing

for all competitors I don’t think it was asked yet. But what are you expecting handicap wise or so you have a realistic goal for the arccos handicap drop?

I played the Epic Flash at 45.5" until early this spring when I got frustrated and cut it down to 44.5".

I have another driver in my basement, a Cobra AMP, that has a shorter shaft in it. Always felt better than the Epic Flash. And, testing with my swing speed radar, I could swing it just as fast, if not faster.

I'm 5'11", but have long arms. My tendency is to stand a little close to the ball. The shorter length just feels a lot more comfortable to me.

Improvement in face contact has been incredible. (Epic Flash on top.)

This competition is opening my eyes to the SZ irons, but I can’t find the SZ irons in stock at any of our golf stores down here ... not Edwin Watts or Dick’s Sporting.

I think it was during my practice round Friday, there was one shot where I felt like the club "stuck" in the ground a little bit. My Maltbys have a very similar v-style sole to, say, a Srixon or Hogan. The leading edge on the SpeedZones do not have that kind of relief. We've been really dry this season, so it remains to be seen if the lack of a v-style sole impacts me in a negative way.

After playing with them some more on the range during my lesson Tuesday, I actually think the sole design on the SpeedZones is really smart, however. The small effective sole area makes them glide through the turf on good swings, while the larger parts of the sole help guard against digging a ton when I get really steep. I was taking a very tidy small divot with my short irons with no issues (off of bentgrass).

One thing I think is better seen in person, is how the sole transitions. In my opinion, the pictures make it look like there is a lowered area entirely around the perimeter of the bottom of the club. That is not the case, which I've tried to illustrate below.

Honestly, I played some really, really good golf during the baseline rounds, so I'm going to need to continue that if I want my handicap to drop.

For me, I need to keep more tee shots out of obstructed areas and put my approaches closer to the hole. That's going to lower my scores at least 2-5 strokes each round from where I am now. Case in point - during my round Tuesday my drives had obstructed second shots on holes 1 (hit tree), 3 (under trees), 16 (hit trees twice) and 18 (under trees). Combine that with two three-putts from a mile away, and one ball OB, and the score adds up quickly. Remove those and my 84 becomes an 80 or better pretty easily.

Expectations vs. reality is something I do struggle with from time-to-time. I have to remind myself that last season I started at my home course shooting mid-high 90s, and was ecstatic when I shot an 86 in April 2019. Looking back on my scores I didn't drop into the low 80s until late July early August, and even then it was only for a few rounds. I've been consistently 86 or below for the most part this season.

I have this EXACT issue with my driver. I cannot for the life of me get away from the heel @B.Boston can attest. Never realized it until I used the foot spray. Thought I was alot more consistent. Curious if tour length will help....Same thing as well 5'11" and long arms

Agreed. Expectation vs reality is big and do not want to think something is going to happen when its out of reach and then being let down. Was just curious if all of you had goals. Should have worded it better.

I had the same issues with driver, lots of heel strike and inconsistent driving all round until I was fit into a cut down shaft. That's why I went for the tour length F9.

That is not the case, which I've tried to illustrate below.

sole_design.jpg.6f9441d9e108d2b0175bdedbd0c7f2bd.jpg

The sole shape on those looks identical to the F9s and I never noticed any issues with turf interaction at all. Moreover they slide through thick rough pretty well too for a club with a big caboose 😁😎

No one told me the content in this challenge was going to be so robust! Having a hard time following everyone so if I miss something I apologize.

Q: Was a Tour Length driver presented as an option during your fitting?

A: No, it never came up.

Q: Are you finding the thicker soles of the SZ Irons to be an issue getting stuck in the ground?

A. No. I tend to pick the ball and take shallow if any divots so I have not had any issues. I would argue the wide sole actually has helped me slide through the turf easier.

Q: What are your realistic personal goals for this challenge?

A. Increase distance with all clubs, improve GIR and drop HCP by 5 points. Clubs are definitely 1 club longer than my old ones, now trying to gauge actual distances with each one. In my first round I was over the back of the green on 10% of my approach shots, I am usually short of the green on my approach so now it's just trying to dial in the distances with each club.

Same here; the scandal in particular.  To me it wasn't that players were juicing, that was obvious to anybody.  If you're in your mid-30's and your hat and shoe size increase a couple sizes....obviously something is up!  (HGH)  What really bothered me was how MLB turned a blind eye to it because it was good for revenue, and then acted sooooo shocked when the revelations started coming out.

Golf is damn close to be the only sport I'll follow anymore.

Off topic though....somebody steer us back...!
