JBones 1,235
Can't wait to see the finished product. Just bought and R1 yesterday; the paint is the only thing I don't like about it. Quote Follow @GolfspyBones
RookieBlue7 1,677
Time to Update this sucker: What we stared with: Stock R1 with the stock paint. Next, I tried just spraying stripper on it (Tal Strip), but the outer clear coat was super stubborn and didn't budge. So I took some 120 grit and sanded through that first layer of paint: Once that was done, sprayed her back down with stripper and let it eat away the paint to get to this point: Quick note here: The rippled pattern on the sole is just a coating, it's not part of the milling process. It melted away with the paint as well. No biggie, friend said "GET RID OF THOSE DAMNED RACING STRIPES, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. GET RID OF IT AND THE ALIGNMENT MARK". Next came taping it up for primer(I removed all weights and the ASP): I skipped taking pics of the priming process because you can't really see the primer on the head as I used grey sandable primer. I did it in the same process as the finish. Sprayed multiple super thin layers of primer (you'll be able to tell in the painting pics, as I took pics of the process). I believe I ended up doing 4 light coats to get complete coverage(wasn't counting). Once that was done and the primer cured, I wet sanded with 800 grit paper. Once the sanding was done, simply clean it up and wipe with a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust. Next came the actual painting. Again, multiple thin layers here. I believe there were 5 coats on the black(took pics of each step, but don't remember how many I did, sorry, bad memory, LOL). Waited 15 minutes between coats to allow the paint to dry to a tack. At this point, I then wet sand with 2500 grit paper and wipe clean and with a tack cloth after drying. Then comes 3 layers of matte clear (matte black paint, matte clear paint, we were going for a matte black, slightly textured finish, just like the Anser's). I sprayed with 3 thin coats of clear and did not wet sand afterward to leave just a bit of texture to it to further diffuse light. Topped the sole off with black and white paintfill and we're DONE. Took me one day to do it all (I set up my drying booth to cure the paint where it's ready to go this afternoon.). I have about 1.5 hours total working time in it, and I must say I'm pleased with it. I'll be taking it back to him soon. Blade 313
Man, MUCH better than it started! TMs paint job is hideous. I bet in a couple years they'll look back at it and the face painted commercials and ask, What were we thinking?!

RookieBlue7 1,677
Did you sand down the linear texture on the sole or did it melt away with the paint? It melted away. I thought it was milled and I'd be good to just strip the paint fill on the sole with it. Wrong, wasn't milled, lol.
