This was perhaps the most painful drop process I have watched. I get the rules but this was really stretching them. As if he was really ever going to hit the ball in the water and play a ricochet. Then exaggerating practice swings to get the stands to interfere with his follow through. What a diva. Even Phil was getting perturbed with this mess.

You can play a ball in the hazzard. He claimed that if he played a shot that the grandstand would interfere with his swing and is entitled to relief. His claim was he was going to ricochet the ball off the grandstand similar to the way people play the roadhole.

 

Ultimately it is called knowing the rules and how you can make them work for you.

Yeah, I unlike alot of people, don't mind Sergio and actually find him usually very engaging with the fans and media as he has aged.  But this was a real stretch.  Almost made you wonder if he was trying to One Up Jordan Speith from his drop at The Open.  I believe it took almost as long, 21 minutes according to Dan Hicks.

 

I would have loved to hear that conversation between Phil and Pat Perez, when Perez walked up to see what was going on.  There had to be like 4 groups on that hole, at that point, Sergio's group, Perez's group, and probably two on the tee waiting.

At almost 21 minutes long, I think it would bog down all of our data limtis...ha   But I'll see if I can find at least the original lie and his claim.

See if this works.   it's only a 10 second clip but at one point he was facing the wall saying he was going to play it off the rock in front of the ball but the wall impeded his swing.

If you do a google search you can find some highlights but the entire episode took about 30 minutes and wasn't always on tv.

 

Phil's comment about the incident was interesting:

 

"I was thinking this is what my playing partners go through most of the time," Mickelson told reporters after. "I was just on other end of it. I've been on his side of it a lot."

 

In the end delays like Speith's and this one are part of the game when playing is you job. You are going to take the time to do what is best for you to continue playing events. This half hour helped him secure a spot in the tour championship and make more money.

It was pretty entertaining.  No issue with him getting a drop since he could have played the shot if he wanted to....not saying it would have worked but he could have.

For all the asinine 8 stroke penalty for a sticker rules in golf I have no issues when someone finally gets to use the rules to their advantage.  Plus it worked out and he made East Lake, so that drop could end up making him 6-7 figures.

 

I think it's funny though people are bashing Sergio for taking that long and using the rules in his favor, but when Spieth did it all was good and he was just being smart.

And if memory serves, it took a few minutes to move a Little Rock that was in tigers way. They all know the rules and use them. I've got no problem with guys using the rules to their advantage, I also have no problem with the rules committee enforcing the rules. I do think they need to change them, but that's the issue, they need to be changed. My question on this one is why is the grandstand so darn close to the hazard in the first place.
