She was the Queen of Soul, and up there with Mavis Staples as the best female vocalist I've ever heard....

RIP Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, passes away at age 76.  Beautiful voice!!

Thanks Mods for consolidating.  Barbajo just has a quicker trigger finger than this old codger.

 

Loved Aretha's role in The Blues Brothers!  One of my all time favorite movies.

People thought that I was mimicking the Blues Brothers when I was just wearing my normal attire.

Then the cars started having those damned head restraints that made it impossible to wear fedoras.

 

Aretha singing Think with Ackroyd, Belushi, Matt Murphy, and Blue Lou dancing in the background is an all time classic screen scene.

 

I have to watch that film at least twice a year.

It is indeed a sad, sad day because we have lost Aretha and I trust that she rests in peace.   We must not only thank Aretha for the music that she provided, but her contribution to popular music.   In a sense, she is the history of popular music.    She started her career as a gospel singer and evolved into "The Queen of Soul".   Early rock and roll, the roots of popular music, was a combination of black gospel and blues.  Aretha's life and history clearly reflects those roots.   Remember, one of her hits, was her cover of the Rolling Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash".

 

Again, thank you Aretha for the musical enjoyment that you provided to me, but the memories as well.

I'm not a fan of Soul/R&B, but I can damn sure appreciate her contribution to music and her talent. Without Gospel/Blues, there would be no rock and roll. She was an amazing singer and performer. I'm sure we will get to hear quite a bit of her music in the coming weeks.... and rightfully so.

Her music and Motown was what I enjoyed during my teen years.  She was one of those truly unique and rare artist that come along to bring us such pleasure with her talent..
