MGS FORUM MEMBER VCT CUP TOURNAMENT  ROUND 1image.png

Welcome to Week 1 of the MGS Forum VCT Cup! Your steady play this season has earned you a chance to lift the Season 2 Cup! Play well and good luck!

Also, in the event you cannot play and will need a sub, please let @Golf2Much and myself know, and we will help facilitate that.

The first week the four teams in each flight will fight it out with the lowest best ball score to move on in the tournament.  I case of ties (and it has happened), we'll match cards to determine winner.   In week two, the A flight and D flight winners as well as the B flight and D flight winners will face off to see who makes it to the finals.

When you submit scores, we need where you played, which tees you played from, your course handicap from those tees, and hole by hole handicap for the course and hole scores so the best ball between you and your partner can be determined.  This can be via an electronic representation or a picture of your scorecard.   Like in the weekly VCT tournaments, you have a week (Monday through Sunday) to play and post your score. Lastly, the thread locks at 9:00pm EDT on Sunday the 17th, so make sure to get your round posted before then, as any rounds after that time will not be accepted.

I was fortunate to play the lovely Valencia Golf & Country Club in Naples, FL for the first (and hopefully not last) round.

IMG_5960.jpeg.788ef0123bdfb766df5171574c99853f.jpeg

It was a good day for me after a shaky first few holes.

IMG_5958.jpeg.0c41f70e8c72b2af23d99750895d4bdb.jpeg

I played the new Maxfli Tour X ball with “Max Align” for the first time.  I don’t know how much that helped, but I used the alignment aid all day and had only 30 putts, making several long putts to save par or make birdie.  I’m going to stick with that ball for a while for certain.

Also, the ShotScope MyStrategy tool paid off for me with planning tee shots and hole strategies ahead of time.

IMG_5968.jpeg.6e782901b3e851c1a1bf91ab1be5677a.jpeg

I am very pleased with 6 birdies (2 natural).  It was a great day!

Good luck to all the competitors (especially in the other flights!).

Bring the heat @Randall Robbins!!!

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

Started with the bogey on 16, but then came back to play well.  Putter very hot, making up for some average shots!  Indy Bonzo led the way for this team!

Are we only counting the first round played or are we counting the best round posted if multiple are played?

Good question, can we save our rounds for the week and post our best?

Or post all and let the best one stand? Like in a normal week.

Yes, another good option if it wouldn’t be too confusing for Big Ben having to track multiple rounds from each person.

As @Golf2Much does all of the score tabulations, I leave the final decision up to him. But using the match play event as an example. I would say play as many as you are able and post the best available to cut down on the clutter.

Great suggestion @GolfSpy_BEN.   Even though there's pluses and minuses to posting all your scores, it does create clutter and can create confusion.

To help minimizing having to wait to the last moment to hope that everyone is going to post a score by the deadline (Sunday at 9 pm Eastern as a reminder), how about this:

  • If play during the week, post your best round by Friday (or before).  That way we'll at least have a good handle of who's completed a round and who we may have to contact to ensure they have one by the deadline.
  • If you previously posted a score during the week and your weekend round is better, post it with a note that this will be your official submission and I'll update the scoresheet.

This should limit the maximum posts per person to two and help me get a head start on the team scoring, identifying who I need to watch out for and still give everyone a chance to make a scoring change if needed.

For reasons that will be made clear in a different thread, my off the tee game today was atrocious. Feels like I wasted a pretty good day with the putter. The weather was gorgeous for early March, so can’t blame that. Maybe it was going off the back first that threw me off, but after 7 holes I was 6 over. I settled down and parred out over the last 11, but the damage was done.

A round full of Good, Bad and Ugly.

The Good:

1. 2 birdies, both on the front nine, both on hole I popped on - 2nd hole hit a genuinely spectacular 5-iron from the right rough over a tree and made the 8' putt for birdie.  6th hole, hit it to 6' and drained the birdie putt.  Also lipped out a 42-foot birdie putt on the par-3 7th.

2. 25 total putts is one of the lowest I've ever had - putter was a game-changer for me today. Fast greens, and for whatever reason, I was reading them GREAT.

3. Part of making 12 one-putts was giving myself lots of good looks with the wedges - missed quite a few greens, but managed to get myself close enough to drop the putts to limit the damage.

The Bad:

Doubled the 1st, 9th, 10th  and 16th.  Just...can't do that and expect to score well.  The sad thing is that's EIGHT strokes over par between those four holes, and means I played the rest of the holes in +2.  That's crazy for me.

The Ugly:

1. I didn't remember to take ONE picture, and it was a stunningly glorious day out - 64 degrees, light wind - just a hell of a day.

2.  I beat my playing partner (real life, that is) by 10.  It was a frustrating day for him, for sure.

3. The Par 4 16th.  I just need to dig in here for a second.  Hit one of my best drives of the day - ended up in the right rough (I know that doesn't sound great, but the fairway cambered to the right, and I got slightly unlucky with the bounce), but had a perfect window and a 131 yard distance.  My PW is my 135 club, so I pulled it and, with the wind off the left, hit what was (by all accounts of my three playing partners) a PERFECT shot that came down about a foot from the cup - and then instead of settling, it BOUNCED hard and all the way through the green, where it trickled off the back, took the slope and cart path behind the green, and ran to the bottom of the hill, leaving me 80 yards to the green, but it was about 50 feet above my head and I couldn't see a thing.  Hit a PERFECT (swear to god) 48-degree 3/4 shot (my stock 100-yard shot), pin-high JUST left of the pin, settled down in a divot.  I managed to hit it exactly as I wanted to, and it hit the fringe of the green and ... yep, hit another divot and popped up and then settled 1 foot on the green.  I lipped out the putt, adding up to a 6.  It's the weirdest double I've ever gotten - I didn't hit one bad shot, and yet...there you have it. 🙂

@Golf2Much - I'll attach a pic of the scorecard shortly (via phone - I'm typing this on my desktop). If you can't make sense of that, I'm also attaching a screen-grab of an Excel sheet with the real scores/net scores underneath to help in your duties 😉

@CB Lobo 4 Life - I wish I could say I gave us a better chance, but hopefully the eagles make up for a bunch of the net bogeys? 🙂 I tried! I really did!

Our Tuesday money group moved us up tees due to very high winds. Hit low rockets all day and shot a great round. Hit 12 fairways, 14 greens and had 28 putts. We have bad weather due to arrive so, this will probably be my round for the week. We played Blue/Green tees course rating 67.7 and slope of 119. I am a plus 1 from these tees and I shot minus 5. I had a fellow competitor Mike Bryan attest my card. Hope this helps my partner!

I got you. I’ll post my score after dinner but suffice to say, I earned the broke 70 badge today!

Had a great front 9!  I only expected to complete 9 but ended up doing all 18 after the front. Wind was howling and it helped on a few holes.

Hole 7 hit my drive to 45yds out and chipped to 5ft and sank my putt.  Next hole is our number "1" handicap hole and I cranked a drive to the upper deck and had 175yds to the green. Knocked in my eagle putt.

Back 9 score doesn't reflect my play.  Holes 16 and 17 are relatively easy holes and were a cross wind. 16, I hit 4 iron off the tee and it hit hard and left me about 100 out but behind trees and had to punch out.  17, I hooked a drive (yes, I know, I don't hook) and it rolled right and had to take an unplayable.

I am still working out some swing thoughts or the lack there of, but today was good.

@EasyPutter I'm hoping to get in at least one more round.

I mentioned to my MGS Cup partner that I was playing pretty well lately and hope it would roll over to week 1.  Well, it did.  I had my best round since January, 2023.

It was a round of streaks.  I pared five of the first six holes and pared five of the last six.  My numbers help tell the story.  I hit 86% of my fairways (missed only two) and had 17% greens in regulation (which is one more than usual for me).  The 28 putts is a decent number, but it was greatly influenced by the 7 up and downs for par and one more for bogey.

It was one of those special days and I'm just happy it came at an appropriate time!

Very solid round! It was really windy today. I loved that the last five holes in our round were downwind. I had a hole similar to your number seven. It was our number seven as well. Drove it over the dogleg to twenty yards. Hit a beautiful chip with my 58 degree and it lipped out and sat on the back lip. Birdie putts from two inches are fun. However, wish the eagle would have gone in! Great round man!

Thank you sir. After 2 rounds of sub par drives, I was happy to be hitting it well off the tee and with the woods.

You must have hit it very well because it was hard today! Oh forgot to say I made one heck of a par on number five. Hit a poor drive into that wind and it was pushed into the woods and garbage. I had a small hole to punch it out onto the cart path. The cart path took the ball down the hill to pin high. Chipped it up and lipped out, but only had a foot for par. That fired me up for the rest of the round.

Thanks @Josh Parker and @Javs.   On average, I'll break 80 three to four times a year.  This was one of those special days.  For me, stringing five pars in six holes is unusual.  But to do it twice in the same round seemed almost surreal when it was happening.  It was everything I could do to not get ahead of myself.
