How'd you play?

It was a tale of two 9's....

Started really rough - 2 triples and a double in the first 4 holes. My inner dialog was considering quitting at the turn if that garbage kept up. Fortunately it did not. The first few holes are really tight and require accuracy, which I did not have to start the day. Turned things around on the back and even had a couple birdies. Ended up shooting 48/38.

Way to stick with it and work it out. Isn’t that such a great feeling of satisfaction when you are able to get your round back on track?

Sounds like my round today.  I had back2back doubles on 3 and 4 and limped through the front nine with a 43.  Had one bogey on the back nine and a score of 36; missed several birdie putts.  So a 79... which is my third round in a row sub-80.  

My wife and I played with our tax accountant; he hits some great shots but is a little wild at times.

So played for the first time in over 2 weeks. Started double, par, par, double. Shot 38 for the nine.

 

Heat index was 115 when we started. First raindrops when I got to the car and pouring by the time I got home. So needed

My buddy and I won our flight in the member guest at his club. I shot 79 today which is the 1st time I have broken 80 at this course, so it was a good day.

My teammate and I won our two matches on Friday (shamble and alt shot) and I won my singles match 4 and 3 on Saturday, so our entire team took home the victory.

Yesterday was easily the hottest round of golf I’ve ever played in and it’s not even close. And I’m still recovering from it. 

Went off at 730 and once we got to the 8th tee at/around 9 or so, we were all drenched in sweat from head to toe. A buddy checked his phone and said the air temp was 84°, head index at 95° … with the dew point at 79°! That’s an utterly insane dew point number. 

Had 11 bogeys, four of which were 3-putt bogeys, for 40 putts total on the round. First time last time I’ll ever play in those conditions again.

Have been playing but keep forgetting to post here. Got out Saturday afternoon for a quick 9 with a friend as our course has closed the front nine for a renovation. First round in three weeks and the first two holes I totally played like it going double, triple. From there I got myself back on track closing with 5 pars, a birdie and a bogey on the last. Was nice to get back out there, and the driver was a real weapon this week which was great to see.

Read this portion and was already thinking a PB post... you can see where my mind is of late .  I definitely prefer the AZ dry heat to the hot & humid option.  Temp's north of 110F aren't alltogether comfortable but more tolerable for me.

2nd round since moving here to Fairfield Glade. Still just raining off and on all the time so getting out has been tricky due to that and work.

Still a pretty horrible round like last Sunday. 51/54/105.  I make a step forward on something, then follow that up with multiple steps back with other things. 8 lost balls, all but 1 off the tee (the one was a perfectly struck 8 iron that went way too far over the green and into the water). Not slicing or duck hooking, just bad start lines with over draw. Plus if you're off the fairways/rough here, you're in the woods.

My driving is still short. I need to spend a bit of time on a sim to figure out if my setup and swing changes are helping reduce my spin which has been way too high over the years. Been contemplating getting a 13.5* "oversized" 3 wood and just putting the driver away since my 3 wood in most cases keeps up with the driver.

There are a couple bright spots - putting and chipping. My putting has always been a bright spot for me over the years and it has continued. What's been really surprising these last few rounds has been my 50 and in play. Pitching and chipping has been one of the worst parts of my game. Tons of chunks and deceleration and leaving bunker shots in the bunker. I've been hitting my pitches and chips really solidly and on point. I'm getting lots of height and making good ball marks with the ball stopping where it lands on my longer pitches. My chips around the green has been great with no chunks lately and fairly accurate roll-outs. Even my bunker play has been good as I haven't left any in the bunkers and I've even had a couple sand saves. I've watched more than a few YT videos on chipping and have found a few really strong instructional points that I've been using with great results.

I go for my first lesson this Saturday with a second 2 weeks later. We'll see if we can fix "what ails me" and my swing so I can start seeing more improvement. I'll get there.

Played 27 holes Friday last.  Played well overall, but just cannot seem to avoid the blowup hole that kills an otherwise good round.  Shot 41-40-81 and then 39, so definitely closing in on breaking 80.  I consistently shot right around my 10 hdcp, but never seem to get that stellar day where it all clicks and scores go crazy low.  But getting closer.  Gotta work on focus.  If I eliminate the chunked chips, or improve GIR somewhat, or hit just a few more fairways, or do all three, then I think scores will go low.  That’s why I love this game so much - I am not a tournament golfer, but I love competing against the course and myself while rooting for and playing with good friends.
 

I used both trial putters - Cleveland blade and Scotty Rossie-shape (it has a silly real name IMO) and both were excellent with distance control.  Only 1 3 putt over 27 holes, and several 1 putts.   Just missed several more.  32 putts on the 18 holes, which is pretty good for me.  Looking forward to testing these and picking one and dialing it in.

Oh man, for sure! I’ll take dry/hot AZ golf all year. Having spent 7 years in Chicago summers and two summers in Maine, I’ve been spoiled … I cannot stand humid weather.

By the 12th hole yesterday, the heat index got to 106°. And kudos to all the caddies that made it through all 4 days at the FedEx St Jude in Memphis … wearing khaki pants in that kind of weather is a huge no-no.

Played 18 on Friday, shot 104 (56/48) but I was pretty happy because I hit 9/14 fairways. Problem was around the green; couldn't putt and my chipping was off on the front 9 but came together (a little bit) on the back 9.

Better than usual! Played 18 with my honey and it turned out to be a pretty quiet, low key afternoon on the course .. following the foursome in front (guys in their .. 50s - 60s? .. apparently all friends from kindergarten!!) .. and no one pushing us from behind.

Driver was working nicely today .. well, most of the time .. and am starting to see some of the distance potential of the Paradym X!

Screwed up a few second shots, had a few 2 chips and 3 putts .. but for the most part I kept moving the ball decently towards the hole.

Had a few pars, a few almost pars, a few "good" bogeys .. all offset by a few stoopit holes and one bad blow-up hole on a relatively easy, straightaway par 4...

Well that's g.o.l.f. = Work In Progress.

Had myself a Jekyll and Hyde day today. Played my worst round in a long, long time with a 91...couldn't hit a single shot right, except for my 1st on a par 3 that went to 6 inches.

Then went out immediately after and played another round, and shot a 77. That's definitely more typical for this season so far. What a strange day!

44/39 at Cimarron today. Started out on strong, hit the best drive ever on the par 4 #5, that rolled over the crest and down past my typical landing area by about 30 yards.  It's a low, flat area before the second rise.  I'm 139 yards to pin and grab my 8i.  Perfect divot, straight at the flag but it was damp and it slid too far under the ball leaving me 20 yards short of the green.  Shorted the chip and 3 putted from 20 feet for a DB.  The rest of the front was a fist fight.  Got back on the rails at the turn and finished well.  

We play team total +/- to quotas and we thought for sure we were out of it at +2 but alas, the other group was -12 .  So we took the team portion and I took 1st individual with a +2 .

I took my 14 year old nephew out for a round the other day.  It was his 4th time ever playing, 3 have been with me.  A lot of worm burners and he seemed stressed at times.  Then he sticks the green from 140 with a 6 iron and a legit par on 9, a par 3.  His attitude totally changed.  He was determined to do it again.  On the back 9,  there were more worm burners.  Then, on 18,  he tattooed his approach shot  (again with 6 Iron).  He told me he can't wait to get out again.  I had to apologize to my sister in law afterwards, for all the golf talk she's going to have to endure from now on.  I may have added a member to our wolf pack.

I played a course in the Chicago suburbs this weekend that has quickly become one of my favorites in the area. Challenging enough to keep it interesting, but not so punishing that you can't have fun. I've been working on swing changes this year and this is the second round in a row where I really felt like my work was paying dividends.

To start, my driving is night and day compared to what it was earlier in the year. My driver used to be the most unreliable club in my bag and I would become a basket case on the tee box every hole. Although I still have some work to do to become even more consistent, I can say that I only had one noticeably bad drive the whole day. 

Irons are where I struggled the most in this round. Of course not everything can work together perfectly, otherwise we'd all be on tour. I didn't turn properly through a few iron shots and sprayed a few to the right that had me scrambling to save bogey or worse.

On the other hand, my wedge game was one of the best I've ever had. From 120 yards in, it felt like I couldn't miss a shot. Distance control, trajectory, alignment were all in sync.

My putting was also very solid all day. I had some great lag putts and some decent par and bogey saves from 5-8 feet.

I shot a respectable 87 with five double-bogeys on the card. If I can eliminate some of those blow up holes, I really think I can reach my goal of beginning a single-digit handicap this year. I'm playing the same course again this week and I'm looking forward to improving on my score!

some signs of my game coming back a bit, birdied the last 3 holes for a 71 at OV today, kick in on 16 (9 iron to a foot) kick in on 17 (50 degree to 1 foot) 10 footer on 18… trying to get more aggressive from 150 in, needs some more work but something to build on.

Not at all  the course is Bowes Creek in Elgin, IL. Probably in my top 3 for public golf in the Chicagoland area that doesn't break the bank

... I lived in Naperville for 40 years and drove up there a couple times every season. Such a great course when it opened and there were just a couple homes. Changing every year but still a great track.

I've never played that one. Let me know what you think! Always looking for new courses to play in the area.
