Morning all!  Late start for me today.  Going to be cloudy all day, but warm, so going to get some yard work done and then go hit a small bucket of balls on my way to the dentist.  Have a great day everyone!!

Top of the pot everyone ☕.  During league play almost 2 months ago, with a par, par start, I hit a drive off #3 tee at Cimmaron; the conclusion of which felt like someone stuck a shank in the mid-lower right side of my back. I took a 10 on the par 5 and probably should have headed off the course, but did not.  After a few days of rest and taking Aleve, it felt okay and I resumed play.  Apparently "okay" means my desire to play exceeds my tolerance for discomfort.

It's not a debilitating type pain, but just enough to make deep turns with the longer arrows uncomfortable. So, I reluctantly have taken this entire week off my four scheduled rounds, hoping some extended rest will help.  I suppose the upside is that is muscular and not spinal.  Looking at a diagram of muscles and tendons of the back is like looking at a commercial aircraft wiring diagram - lots of stuff in there.

Having recently relocated, and busy with so many other things, we've not yet established doctors.  One of the guys in my Thursday group recommended a PT but, guess what... I need a referral.  So, yesterday I signed up with a GP but they are scheduling appointments later in the month.  By the time I get to PT, it could be May 😑.

My next round is Monday.  Do I test it out or give it more time?  A week of no golf seems like eternity but if I keep re-injuring this could be a protracted cycle.  Maybe these type injuries take much longer to heal... dunno... not dealt with this before.  What say the "Morning coffee crew"?

Thanks Tony. Yes, there is a recommended sports PT right near us but I need a referral from a doctor which will be a couple weeks until I get an appt with him.  I'm just in the conundrum of how long to rest it (from full golf swings).

Since none of the pain moves down into my hip or legs, I'm guessing not sciatica.  My guess is this;

"Golf-related pain is not limited to the lower back. Middle back (thoracic) pain from golf and upper back pain from golf may also occur without warning, even on the golf course. The sudden pain may be described as sharp or stabbing, and is usually a result of overworked muscles. Pain in the middle or upper back may be related to an overworked erector spinae, a set of 3 muscles that start near the sacrum and run upward along the sides of the vertebral column. When faced with physically demanding movements, the erector spinae compensate for weakness in the larger core muscles and lower back muscles, and are prone to muscle strain anywhere along the back as a result."

I think the "physically demanding movements" fit my swing 🤣.  I haven't tried the hot/cold treatment but will start today and through the weekend to see if that helps.

Found this article interesting.

I find I always bring water, but sometimes so focused on my game I won't drink that water until the end when I chug half the bottle. Those are the worst days for my back pain, I find.

This also goes to the "taking breaks to play a full 18 your best" idea I've seen someone mention here.

Since none of the pain moves down into my hip or legs, I'm guessing not sciatica.  My guess is this;

Thanks all! I took a look at it again, and wow! It does look like a painting. Caught the morning light, I guess. 😆

@fixyurdivot, sorry to hear about your pain. What you’re describing sounds a lot like the injury that made me take a break from golf years ago. I’m no doctor, but just curious, is the pain there now? Or is it only when you swing? Does a Salonpas back patch help?

I think I did massage therapy at the time to get through it.

Thanks.  I've not heard of a Salonpas back patch but might when I finally get into see a PT. The pain has been there on and off whether I'm swinging or not; though seems to amplify after range or play.  Makes me believe I'm just re-injuring and not giving enough time to heal.  I can play through it, though not the most enjoyable, and taking an Ibuprofen or Aleve helps.  But doing so is likely just going to keep it chronic.

I'm getting lots of advice from the locals about keeping hydrated here - especially moving into summer weather.  I'm usually pretty good at doing so but will need to pay attention to this for sure.

You might think about getting Voltaren gel- it's pretty good stuff (kinda pricey though)
