Played in a 9 hole 2 man man scramble at the club with my son, John as a partner.  
 

We won at 4 under and a few extra bucks on our side bet with the two some that we played  4 up plus 1 up on the press - birdied 8 and 9. 
 

He really hit some bombs and actually hit a Happy Gilmore drive 285 in competition on another $25 side bet. Good thing I piped my drive on that hole because his was in the wrong fairway - the bet was he couldn’t hit it 270 in bounds - it was actually 288. 
 

I hit the ball great. 7/9 greens, several great looks at birdie. 
 

I love playing with him as a partner, he’s very coachable. 
 

High marks for the Mezz today

played Saddlebrook Resort’s Palmer course today with some friends…..shot a 42/44:86

i was very pleased with my round as I had 7/14 FIR’s and 5/18 GIR’s and 56% up and downs with 26 putts.  The greens are healing from a big punch just two weeks ago. I had 7 One putts!

Gonna set up for a Saturday Round in August.

 

BTW, we played @ 5th man game between two foursomes. We selected two holes per side for each player before we teed off. Then added an extra player for the 9th hole.  We won by 7 strokes.  Funny how you have four players, 3 get a par and the one selected to have the hole gets a double bogey….Ugh! Then we went to Glory Days Grill for libations and food. Great 4th!

Well, a second round in on this 3-day weekend for me, at what I consider my home course, even though I drive by 2 others to get there.

Played at Stony Creek Metropark and finally had 2 great things happen today.

Still played multiple driver / shaft combinations, and it was the day to finally decide, so I used the one I missed most fairways with more often to see if I could get it dialed in.  At least it was consistent, and I only hit 4 of 12 fairways, and those were with the driver that was winning the battle to stay in the bag. I didn't count the 2 fairways that required a club other than a driver, as I did hit them with a 3 wood and a 4 iron. (Short, severe dogleg par 4's).

The front 9 played extremely slow, had a couple groups of beginners that took way too many shots, and way too much time.

Had a 43 on the front, 7 bogeys, 2 pars, and 18 putts. 

The slow groups only played 9, so the back opened up quite a bit, and it was enjoyable to play without having to wait 5 minutes between shots! 

Came to hole 11, a par 3 which played 146 from the whites with the flag in the center of the green. Slight breeze into me, so I hit a smooth 7 iron which hit the green about 4 feet from the hole and disappeared into the cup. SWMBO saw it hit the green but didn't see it roll in. When we got to the green, I told her to look in the cup. Pictures below.

Shot a 36 on the back 9, with the HIO, and 2 bogeys, the rest were boring golf pars.

So, I got off the 79 scoring pace I seemed to be stuck on, with this 77, and also am no longer a member of the "Aceless Society." Took 54 years to get my first one, so hoping I don't have to wait another54 years.

Played in a fund raiser scramble today and as usual after about the 13th hole I'm wondering why I sign up for these 5 hour rounds.  Tee to green was OK but I'm still putting like Roberto Duran.   I have a lot of work to do to get back on track with the flat stick.  We scored fairly well at -16 but that finished a distant 4th.

That'd be crazy, wouldn't it? I'm planning on giving it a go a couple of times this week since we're on shutdown. The weekend and early part of the week have been busy, but I'm hoping it'll settle down after today. Maybe the irons will be happy after giving them a good cleaning yesterday and hit a couple of pin seekers.

Got out this Saturday for the round and played the blues at my home course, which moves it back to 6700 yards but will help give some space to reduce the handicap if I play well as from the whites, a 73 (+2) was still a 5 differential. First hole I got lucky with my ball ending up just short of the hazard, punched short of the green and holed out for birdie, now that's how we start the round. Lucky tee shot on 2 as I almost lost he ball right, but then got rolling a bit. Made a mess of the par 5 5th with a bogey which started a string of three straight. Finished up with two pars though for 37. Found the driver on the back which was great, a little low but straight which lead to 5 straight pars, including one with a 30 ft long put up a tier that then runs down after the top. Wrapped up 38 on the back for 75. Feeling like the game is in a good place. If this driving sticks I could see a nice round coming. Made a couple of nice chips, but hit 10 greens which is a big improvement on the approach play (left the shot scope charger at my parents so not strokes gained). This pushes my handicap down to 6.9 (first time ever under 7).

Less serious play than getting out with the family over the holiday.  Play two 9's at the exec at our cabin.  +4 one day +7 the next.  It was a lot of fun and its a great no pressure way to get my wife and daughter involved.

The course is showing some wear from the heavy drought last year.  They're trying to get it to come back but it didn't get much water last fall and it shows.  Some of the teeboxes are toast and the greens show some bad spots.  Way softer and slower than they usually are, but I think in efforts to get them to heal they're letting them get a bit fuzzier than normal.  It's still drought this year so imagine the unwatered waste areas of three or four years ago are about to make a come back.

Owen didn't want to get up this morning after being out with friends last night so I went to River Heights alone.  Hot and humid today with very little wind; mid-round my phone said 90° and felt like 109°.  So of course I decided to walk.  There were a few slow groups in front of me but I had nowhere to be today so I just hung out and enjoyed the day.  I've found that I'm a much more patient golfer when I'm by myself compared to playing with others.

Hole 1: Sliced my driver but it left me with a clear look down the dogleg.  Clipped the trees coming out and wound up just short of the green.  Chip and a two putt for bogey.

Hole 2: Solid drive that just missed the fairway right.  Chunked my seven iron then hit a full wedge just long and left.  Chipped on and almost holed it.  Tap in for bogey.

Hole 3:  Good drive, good second shot, then just off the back of the green with my 8 iron.  Poor chip and a two putt for bogey.

Hole 4:  Chunked my 6 iron so bad I almost missed!  Dribbled forward about twenty yards.  Pulled my 8 iron left of the green.  Chipped on and two putted for a double.

Hole 5:  Has a river that runs through the fairway requiring a 220 yard carry.  I have struggled to carry it lately so I decided to lay up with my 7 wood.  Chunked my short hybrid a bit and wound up short and right.  Chipped on but miles away.  Three putted for another double.

Hole 6:  A good drive that almost ran through the dogleg followed by a 3 wood that tailed at the end and wound up in the rough behind the greenside bunker.  Chipped over the bunker and two putted for par.

Hole 7:  Tried a punch 7 that didn't turn like I'd hoped.  Chipped over the green, then chipped on and two putted for a double.  Oof.

Hole 8:  Sliced my driver onto the next fairway, then managed to put my 6 iron on the green.  Just missed a 45 foot birdie putt.  Par

Hole 9:  Topped my driver about 100 yards.  Rather than wait on the group in front of me I hit a layup with my 8 iron, then chipped on.  Two putt bogey.  +10 46 for the front nine.

One group peeled off and the other stopped at the turn, so I grabbed a Mountain Dew and continued on.  Downed that Dew over three holes which was a mistake I felt over the following two, lol.

Hole 10:  Hooked my hybrid and almost lost my ball in the weeds.  My chip attempt came up woefully short.  Second chip was better, but I two putted for a double.

Hole 11:  Seven iron onto the green; first time I've hit this green in months.  50 foot birdie attempt stopped about a revolution right of the hole.  Par on what's been a nemesis hole.

Hole 12:  Drove the short par four pin high to the left.  Eagle putt was on line but a bit short.  Hit the birdie putt!

Hole 13:  Great drive that wound up a club-head length into the rough.  9 iron onto the green, then a two putt for par.  Shot Scope says that's my first ever three par stretch.

Hole 14:  Drive was long but trickled into the pond.  Dropped, then hit short hybrid just short and left.  Duffed my chip just shy of the fringe, then almost almost holed out putting with my 7 iron.  Hit the putt for a double.

Hole 15:  Hit a decent drive that went straight rather than draw.  It went into a pine tree and luckily squirted out the other side.  Chunked my 8 iron just short of the green.  Chip and a two putt for bogey.

Hole 16:  Short par five and I bombed my drive of the day.  Hit an 8 iron that faded a little too far left.  A poor chip followed by a long putt that didn't never had a shot but did stop close enough to tap in for par.

Hole 17:  Sliced one into the river then re-teed and hit a solid one along the tree line on the left.  Short hybrid went pin high but left.  Chipped over the bunker but it died on the fringe.  Almost hit the putt from the fringe, but tapped in for bogey.

Hole 18:  Another good drive followed by hitting my 8 iron over the green; I thought I'd grabbed my nine.  Chipped on and two putted for bogey.  A killer (for me) +6 42 on the back.

Final tally was 46/42 88 (+16), my best round ever at my home course.  Sweated my ass off and the flies wouldn't stop buzzing my ears and biting my legs, but man...I had a really great time!  Nothing worse than a double, five pars and a birdie.

I was by myself today so I decided to walk 9 holes.  Hooked up with a couple of guys, one I had played with a couple of times before.  They were playing the Blue tees (big hitters), so rather than play from the White tees like I have all year, I played with them.  Generally, I hit the ball off the tee to about the same places that I used to when I played the Blue tees, so I guess I didn't lose any more yardage this year.

I parred the first 4 holes.  Highlight was on the par 4 #3 hole; used to be the #1 handicap hole, and not sure why they changed it... tough!  The pin was on the left front of the green; water front; left of a pot bunker with not much green to work with.  Shots to the middle of the green over the pot bunker end up on a lower level or off the back.  I hit an OK drive on the right side of the fairway (wrong side to attack that pin), but it ran into the rough on one of the grassy mounds; ball above my feet on a downhill lie from 170y that is all carry over water... Nope!  So punched my PW to the left side of the fairway short of the rough that is short of the water.  Hit the PW again to an inch of the cup for a tap-in par.

The first four holes are short-ish, but then the par 5 #5 hole is 551y and generally plays into the prevailing wind.  From the Blue tees for me it's driver, 3W, 3W if I want to have a chance to get to the green.  The White tees aren't much better though.  Made bogey.  After a par on the par 5 #6 hole, I bogeyed the remaining 3 holes, which was about normal last year for me from the Blue tees.  A round of +4 (41) is a good round for me from the Blues.  

I've been lower this year from the White tees but only a couple of times; my scores from the Blues and the Whites aren't all that different.  However, the difference comes from the clubs I hit.  Today was all Driver, FW and wedges.  From the White tees I get to hit a lot of mid-irons, which equals much more fun. Yep!  Confirms my decision to move up to the Whites!!

... Good stuff Kenny! So many fun options for all players. My ideal length is around 6600yds depending on the par 4's but I am comfortable down to about 6200. That means for my 2 favorite courses the most fun is a combo round with 9 holes from the whites and 9 holes from the silvers. But depending on how I am playing and who I am playing with, I enjoy all white or all silver too. I have even moved up to the gold tees with some super seniors and felt like Rory LOL. While I prefer to hit a 4 or 5 iron and even my DHy to the most difficult par 4's on the course, I certainly would not want to hit long irons or hybrids and worse fairway woods on all the par 4's. And by the same token I would not want to hit mid and short irons into every par 4 either.

You definitely hit in something.  Our 18 hole player ages go from mid 60’s to 80.  On some courses we play from where the players are comfortable, if it means mixing up the Tee Boxes so be it. We are not out there to break any records, just fun and recreation.  The Wednesday group yardages go from 5,600 to slightly over 5,800. This is more than enough challenge for my 75 year ole butt.

Tell me about it!!  I wish our course had combo tees on the scorecard; there is just too much yardage between the Blacks to Blues and Blues to Whites... 600 yards between each.  

The only reason I haven't played a combo Blue (6000)-White(5400) is when I play with someone who is playing from the Blues, I forget and tee off there instead of moving up.  Just a habit and being old!

Occasionally we may get a walk on who wants to play “Big Boy” Tees, we just let them and play our own game.  We’re old and it’s “all about us”

It was a great day but an ass kicking. I had one of my worst rounds with 3 penalties on the front. ... Yea, I wish more courses did it for you. My regular winter and summer courses don't have combo's on the scorecard either so I started by circling the holes and making my own. But by now I know them without looking of course. One of my playing pards turned 80 this spring and gets it out there pretty well for his age but I finally talked him into playing a combo from the senior tees and the most forward tees. Thankfully he is secure in his masculinity and after playing the longer par 4's from the red tees (still unfortunately called Ladies tees by too many) he enjoyed it much more than all Senior tees. But he likes to talk and like you sometimes forgets to move up a tee until I remind him.
