Hole #15 at Princeton CC, white tees forward playing 265y we commented on the tee I could reach if I hit a good one. I did hit a good one, but what I didn't account for was my ball sinking into the soft just rained on ground about 2" and popping forward a foot. 20230730_191750.jpg.137dbce628cdfdaaf7bbd7d68bb7fb41.jpg

Also didn't plan on no fairway on this hole by the green. There was a fairway back by the 150y marker if I had hit 5i off the tee. Instead I banged one dead center 235y carry and had 30y left with an awkward lie. Only managed bogey from here after a poor wedge shot to the fringe and a 3 putt from off the green.

Finding a way to turn birdies into bogeys since 1992. #TeamChunks

Hole of the day was #4, 150-ish yard par 3. Mishit my 8-iron off the tee but managed to stay out of the cabbage and was about 10-15 yards from the green. Hit a heroic flop shot to 10 feet and drained the par putt, best hole of the day.

Got out for a quick 9 today. The shot that "brings me back" was a Pitching Wedge to 15 feet from 126 yards out of the rough. Loving my irons more and more. Still struggling with Driver though but it is improving so there is that. 😃

Better Ball of Partners 9 in the 27 Hole Championship.  233 yards out from the pin with a buried elephant and the pin back left.  Ball above my feet and coaxed a perfect draw with a 4 iron.  Landed on the front of the green and ran up the ridge leaving 20 feet for eagle.  Lipped the putt, but had 4 birdies in that 9 hole format.

Nothing wild today but going with my first swing of the day.

Par 5 uphill off the tee. Absolutely smoked it and was in perfect position. I didn’t waste it. One of my only real eagle chances all year, made bird.

My hole of the round was the 13th, and mostly just because of my recovery shot.  I hit a decent 3 wood off the tee that put me just to the right of the big tree, giving me a good look at the green.  I hit a weak hook with my 9 that landed in the tall rough just short of the bunker on the left side.  Took my lob wedge and landed on the front of the elevated green and rolled to just past the hole for the near-tap-in birdie save.

Third shot after 2 poor shots, . 102 yards, in dirt, behind trees, with one small opening requiring a 30 yard cut. Punched a PW, way back in stance, with a slightly open face. Landed left of green, but took a seriously favorable bounce, and rolled up to 3' for the "par save of the week"

I hit a weak hook with my driver.  This puts the ball on the fairway on 18 which shortens the hole a bit.  I hit an 8 iron to the back of the green (pin was in the front) and just missed the long birdie putt for a tap in par.  Despite being one of the easiest holes on the course, I have my worst average score on this hole.  Since there's no range here, we usually arrive roughly ten minutes before our tee time so the first (few) hole(s) becomes an adventure.  I'm usually double at best as I work the kinks out.

Hit a really good drive on hole fifteen today and I'd remarked to Owen about how early on in our golf adventures we were thrilled if we were near the pine tree that sticks out into the fairway about 30 or so yards back.  Hit an approach shot that for once actually hit the green and stuck rather than rolled forwards.  I'll take a two-putt on this tricky green all day.

This week I played with my nephew and shot a ho hum 80.  Finished birdie - birdie after making a lot of mental errors.  I drove the ball OK, hit some decent irons and putted OK, just nothing too flashy.

My best hole was likely the first.  Tee shot was hit off the heel into the right second cut leaving me about 165 to a front middle pin.  I caught a flier with my 8 and went long right above a back to front sloping green.  I put a really good swing on my 60* and left myself inside 2’ for a par.  Good recovery despite my best effort to raise my already increasing BP.

My putter was the star of the show today, making birdie putts on consecutive holes. First one about 60’ (lucky), and then next hole about 12’. Yum yum

God!  Don't those just make you wonder why the heck we even spend $$ to do this to ourselves?

Who was it that once said that they called it golf because all the other 4-letter words were taken?  These are the kinds of days that have me acting like a bobble-head thinking about that statement.

Hang in there.

I wanted to share a fun story since dad really isn't on social media or anything.

Dad plays in 2 golf leagues each week here and has for the 8+ years they've been here. Plus, he's played golf for many, many decades wherever we've lived and in other evening leagues off and on throughout his work life.

As of late, he's been playing real quality golf. He's won his matches when they've played match play. He came just a couple strokes away from shooting his age. His team has won play multiple days over the past few weeks (which includes a small cash award, usually enough to end up playing for free that day).

But there's been one thing he hasn't been able to accomplish. He's come really close on many occasions. And by close, I mean inches.

Yesterday was another typical day. He had a later tee time in his Friday league than usual. I got a text from him well after 9am letting me know he was going to swing by and pick up some stuff from the garage after his round. Like I said, nothing out of the ordinary.

I logged off for the week a little after 4pm and he still hadn't made it over. I figured he had a really late start time, and maybe the round just ran long being towards the back of the league when he started. It was a little after 5pm when I finally heard the garage door open. So I headed out to help him put the boxes in his Tucson.

Conversation started like usual. I asked how his golf was. He gave a usual answer - a bit inconsistent. Good holes, bad holes. The usual. As I grabbed the last box, I noticed he had on a different hat than I've seen before. The color was very different than the ones I've seen in his collection. It took me a minute to focus on the lettering as he was moving around in the garage. Holy s***! No way!

He caught me looking at the hat, and he looked at me and gave me a wry smile.

"Did you?"
"Yup."

He finally did that one thing he's never done on a golf course. At age 82.

132 yards with a 7-iron.

I haven't stopped smiling since he told me.076565a613ea754b76c9a4d087af9edc.jpg6a9af484e5195f36e641b796638e01dc.jpg

385 yard par 4. Really narrow passage between trees off the tee to a blind fairway that drops out of view. Actually hit a tree on the tee shot and only went 168 yards. Hit a 5 wood from the rough there to about 10 yards off the green...chipped in for birdie on greens that had just been punched.

Last hole of tournament, started on 10 so this was hole 9. Par 5 630yrds. Pulled tee to left, under trees but clear shot. Only hit it maybe 220 yards or so off the tee. Second shot, with a good lie, hit 3 wood about 200 yards or so into the fairway leaving 188 yards. 4 iron, 2 bounces and hits the pin stopping about 4 feet from the hole. Made the putt for birdie.

This is one of the toughest holes in my area and getting a birdie was nice.

Finally reached the 17th - 125 yard par 3 after a long and frustrating round. My 3 playing partners all sprayed their tee shots - left, right, short... so I said to them quite confidently "stand back lads, this is how's it done!" There was no reason for this confidence as I had doubled and tripled all previous par 3's that day, but none the less I grabbed my PW and placed my ball down. My playing group all piped up with their words of encouragement (or sarcasm), and away I swung. Great connection, perfect flight, right at the flag. I held the pose for extra luck and watched the ball land with hawk like vision... boom. The ball landed about 3 feet past the hole and then did a little bounce back towards it. No hole in one again, but there were cheers and pats on the back had as the disbelief of such a glorious shot right at the end of the round could be produced. Anyways, I wondered down to the green and completed my 2 putt to walk away with my first par of the round... the weather was nice though.

The only thing working on the course is my putter... On the 8th par 5 hole, I quacked a drive off a tree that went toward the adjacent hole's green, Left with a downhill lie I hit a really good (first good shot)3 iron that faded up the fairway but got stuck in the rough on hill of the 30° 14 foot drop. Opened the club face of a 5 iron (2nd good shot) and hit to about 5 feet in front of the green. I was about 30 feet from the hole and quacked (shanked) wedge sideways. What can I say, I have an illness.... This left me about 30 feet from the hole still... Read the putt (shot of the day) and sank it for par. I hate myself.

Hate yourself, not the game...

I made some good putts today between 6-8’ for birdie which felt good however the best shot for me had to have been my tee shot on our second hole.

It was a 6 iron from 198 that I still cannot believe landed middle of a back to front green and rolled long but it was Purina. It was the swing I’ve been working so hard to change and that ball flight and contact were everything. We ended up using someone else’s ball for the hole which was OK.

Second eagle of my life.  Hit my drive straight but to the right a bit, then hit my 8 iron pretty straight but just to the left a bit, before hitting my putt dead straight and right into the cup!

I could post my two great holes but today I’ll pick my worst. After drive ob, re-tee left 180 to back of green. Hit 6i but it didn’t curve and ended up on the slope of the first tee box. To get on the green I had to go over a fence to get on the green. I opened up my 58 and swung hard. Got it over and to 21’.

Can see the crappy lie here

Had 2 shots from 170ish out. Both very close I chose this shot though because even though it was about a foot further away from the cup, when it landed it checked and almost rolled in for eagle (divot in front of the cup, ball past the cup)IMG_2224.jpeg.e5e8db952c0d3007004c6f4628b760c8.jpeg

If I could get any closer I would! Not from lack of effort that’s for sure 😂
