So, about the average for a tour pro which is -1.3º

The average for LPGA is +3.0

... I played a practice round with a young guy in Orlando a few years ago that had won twice on the Mini Tours down there. He had a Titleist that he hit very straight and around 290 with around 2700 spin and a negative AOA and basically hit every fairway missing a few by several feet only. He also was hitting a Callaway he hit around 320 with around 1900 spin, a positive AOA but hit several off line drives, 2 of them into the forest. Said he would keep working at it but he preferred the control of the Titleist and spin was his friend because he felt he could control it much better. There just is no one-size-fits-all for spin or AOA.

That is why those numbers were averages and not absolutes. Have to figure out what works for what you want to accomplish.

Bought a used 3W (ATMOS Blue) shaft with cobra tip that matches the shaft in my F9 driver off Kijiji (Canadian Craigslist)...

This will bring playing length down to 44" by my math, the FWY shaft is 7g heavier to offset some of the lead tape needed to maintain swing weight by shortening down from 45.5". Also, shaft is regular flex in the FWY vs stiff in the driver. Was a cheap experiment for $50 to try on the range for a few days to test dispersion/strike location and see what it does to my swing speed and carry numbers on my SC200 this winter. It will probably be a bit whippy, but maybe the different flex brings up launch a bit...

Golf is funny sometimes, hit a few on the button using the 3W shaft then started hitting it all over the face as I work on setup tweaks from my lesson and get entirely too mechanical with swing thoughts... Decide to slow down for the last ball or 2 of the session and make good contact...

swing thought: make the slowest swing of the day

The result is 102 CHS and 243 carry (longest of day by almost 10 yards) just off centre towards the toe. Lol. next ball 238, which is top end of my carry distance around 100 MPH driver speed.

So I am also 60 days in (90 day CPO guarantee coming up soon) with the shorter shaft and I like it in terms of keeping the ball in play. However, my distance drop is huge and wanted someone’s advice who has played the Pro 2.0 shafts @Golfspy_CG2 . Should I exchange for the same stiffness but the non tour spec or get the tour spec but softer in flex? My prior shaft (pro 63 XS) I could get to go 260-290 but this one (pro 2.0 7 TS XS) is only 230. I also work cold weather and sloppy fairways are playing a roll but I am unsure. I also can’t see my fitter to test out what is going on. I also added 19g of extra weight to get the swing weight up.

19g of weight sounds like a ton to be adding. What swing weight do you play?

From my personal experience my cobra Speedzone TL is 204g (44.25 length with normal grip) and my brothers 0811 XF head was 200g (45 inch standard length). My G30 head was around 204 as well (playing at 44.5).

You may want to try a lighter swing weight as you might find something different works at that length.

Thanks. I was trying to get about D0-5 or so. My prior setup with the longer shaft was super light ( I think leading to some of my consistency issues, the back weight stock was supposed to be 12g but was 2 g instead. That’s what I got for getting it from the bay. ) I did have the weight I originally had in the head and still had the same distance issues. I also worry that my worry is also being driven by cold weather but it’s hard to say.

... Conventional wisdom, which means everyone is different and these are the best numbers given all players, for every 1" you increase shaft length you add 5-10yds if hit in the center. Otoh for every 1/4" you miss the center of the face you lose 5-7yds in distance. So add 1" and theoretically gain 10 yds but miss the center by 1" and you theoretically lose 20-28yds. For most players using a shorter shaft means hitting the center more often and longer drives that are also straighter drives. But I have seen older slower swinging players hit the center with longer shafts and gain yardage. Same for some elite players that rarely miss more than 1/2". And then confidence enters into the equation and some swing longer shafts with more confidence.

... Shafts can make very little difference or all the difference in the world depending on how you swing, how much lag you create an when you release the club head. I have a smooth transition and a late release and a little shocked when my fitting clearly illustrated I hit R driver shafts longer and starter than S shafts. I am hitting the ball in the 275 range here in the desert and every metric tells me I should be playing a S shaft. I would have never even demoed R shaft without my fitting so it was a real eye opener.

... Obviously when I say most will hit the ball longer and straighter with a shorter shaft if you are not in there most category you may have a very different result. But in your case if the difference is not subtle but "huge" there are other factors that are causing the problem. There is a good chance that your type of shaft and swing weight plays a role but there are just so many factors involved.  Good luck in your quest to figure it out!

...so after a few months I think my experiment has shown two things

My accuracy has improved with my driver however I still have not recovered my distance. I believe that is a combo of the weather and the shaft being too stiff for what I need. I am going to experiment with my prior gamer tomorrow but choke down and inch and see how it goes. I will say, the driver does feel heavier with the 15g lighter shaft so hopefully i can keep accuracy and gain a little more speed. Most of all, at some point, i need to get really solid LM data and maybe see my fitter again and get an optimized shaft for my swing as it has evolved over the last 2 years since I got "fitted" for the Pro 63 on a epic flash SZ.

That was about the normal length of a driver when they had smaller heads.  Not crazy if it fits your swing, and you can get the SW in the right ballpark.  A shorter club doesn't always mean shorter distance if you can consistently hit the sweet spot more often.  I would see your fitter about that before making the change.

I shortened my driver, but had to add weight to the head to compensate, but I do hit the ball straighter... more often.

ya my fitter isn’t back until May 7. May just tinker with choking down. Also thinking of getting same people similar shaft from CPO, but at 70-75g weight to help me hold positions better and prevent OTT. The pro 2.0 TS seemed to help but was way too stout.
