Heck of a round kid! emoji106.png

What makes that course a par 69? Lack of 5s or more 3s?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

7 par 3s, 7 par 4s, and 4 par 5s

It is an interesting course to play, really puts an emphasis on your iron game. It is also has extreme elevation changes on almost every hole, which makes for a lot of blind shots. The par and yardage is well below average, but it is still devilishly tricky.

That's cool.  7 par 3's is  got to be a challenge, especially with elevation changes thrown in.

It definitely requires a lot more clubs than driver, wedge, that is for sure.

Now that you all have been able to get a few rounds under your belt with Arccos, are there any stats that surprise you? I think we all have preconceived notions about our games and actually having the data can sometimes turn those upside down.

So far, it's confirmed what I've seen in general score trend and from ShotScope/GAME Golf data from the past two years - as my driver goes, my score goes. It's the weakest part of my game by far because it's unpredictable. Smart distance has me at 262 through three rounds, but I miss a lot of fairways, and my worst shots can be sub-220 yards.

I play a relatively short course (6,100-6,200 yards from the back depending on tee box locations) and can overpower it if I am having a great day driving the ball. The problem is that there are not a lot of holes you can miss on. Most of the fairways are ~30 yards at their widest points, with trees hugging the fairways on almost every hole. I assume a 50-yard dispersion (25 to each side) with the driver after some conversations with @edteergolf. It's why I've recently started hitting irons (assuming a 30-yard dispersion, 15 to each side) more often from the tee as I am reasonably long with my 5/6/7 irons, and I can take advantage of a second shot into greens from 115-150 yards on a lot of holes. I find that to be a comfortable approach distance for me.

When I did the Epic Flash testing last spring at the same course, I hit driver on 15 of the 18 holes (every hole but the par 3s) because before SuperSpeed/weightlifting/lessons, a great drive might top out at 250, and for an average drive I would hit a pull slice about 220, and a great 7-iron might carry 155. This morning I hit driver on only eight holes trying to limit any damage I could cause myself.

I am a little surprised that it values my putting as high as it is so far. I assuming that's because I have been lagging the ball pretty well this year. I still three-putt more often than I like, but I have a lot of putts outside of 20 feet and I usually get down in two.

You have nearly described my Arccos experience verbatim.

The only difference being I have been lied to.  Simply because I couldn't figure out how to select what tee I'm playing from.  You have to pick your tees BEFORE selecting "start round".

Does anyone know how to go back into past scores and switch tees?   Arccos had me down to a 9 hcp at one point, because I've been playing forward tees and it's assuming my 84's were from the tips 🤣.

I can't overpower my course from any tees though even on a good day.  That said, from the senior tee, I do have the occasional eagle chance.  Lately, I'm only pulling driver on 3 or 4 holes, teeing instead with a 3h or 3w, and giving myself a greater chance at a 120-150yd approach shot.  Mine also has shown that my driver is my worst club, and my putter is my best.   It also states my 8i is my best GIR club.  🙂   I think that's because, usually, by the time I get to my 9i or less, I've already blown my GIR. 😉

Agree that it really challenges your mid to long iron game as opposed to driving well then using a wedge into the green.

Ya’ll need to move back if you’re hitting Driver wedge into every green.

There used to be a hole in our league (everyone plays from the white tees) that was a par 5. From the blues and blacks it was a mid-length hole, but from the whites due to a some wetlands/marsh it plays way shorter. I used to go 5-wood 230-250 yard shot) and GW (110-120 yard shot) to the green.

They finally made it a par 4 and moved everyone back on another hole to get another par 5.

Agreed! I am definitely not a driver - wedge type player. I play +1 on most holes golf as my goal so i usually lay up even on par 4's.

I suspect I would do better on a course like that. I average +1.4 on par threes, +1.7 on par fours, and +2.0 on par fives. A par five just means three opportunities to totally shank a shot instead of one 😆

It’s an extremely, fun, diverse course. I’ll write up a quick overview of it tonight.

This post is just going to be a brief (well, it was supposed to be but it didn’t turn out that way😬) rundown of my home course, and overview of the holes, and my scoring average on each. (3 rounds so far) If this doesn’t interest you, feel free to ignore this entire post. My home course is Shoreland Country Club in St. Peter, MN. Overall it is a nicely maintained course overlooking a decent sized lake. My main reason for playing here is the extremely economical junior membership.

Hole 1 - Par 4, 363 yards - avg. 4.3

This is a pretty simple opening hole. Slight dogleg left with a bunker you need to carry to cut the dogleg. Green is elevated about 8 feet.

Hole 2 - Par 5, 498 yards - avg. 5

Straight away 2 shot hole with a blind tee shot down a 40ft hill. Fairway slopes hard from right to left, which makes it a very difficult fairway to hit. Second shot goes up a 40ft hill to a fairly large green.

Hole 3 - Par 3, 218 yards - avg. 3.7

40ft downhill to a large green guarded by multiple bunkers. This hole is very demanding as it requires a high, soft long iron.

Hole 4 - Par 4, 424 yards - avg. 4.7

90° dogleg left. Tee shot needs to fly about 255 so you aren’t blocked out by trees on the left. Approach to a very shallow green that slopes from back to front. Hitting this GIR requires two exceptional shots.

Hole 5 - Par 3, 163 yards - avg. 3

30ft downhill to a smallish green guarded by bunkers. Pretty easy hole, one of the best birdie opportunities on the front.

Hole 6 - Par 4, 381 yards - avg. 5

Another 90° dogleg left, this hole requires a tee shot of 210 to get to the corner, and then mid iron up a 25ft slope to a blind green. Approach is very demanding due to some funky, ball above your feet lies.

Hole 7 - Par 5, 495 yards - avg. 5

Nicknamed by the locals, “Stairway to Heaven” this hole is just a shade under 80ft straight uphill. Don’t let the short yardage fool you, this hole requires to very solid shots to get home in two.

Hole 8 - Par 3, 141 yards - avg. 2.7

Very simple par 3, the only trouble is the green that slopes from front to back with a sharp runoff into some pines off the back.

Hole 9 - Par 4, 352 yards - avg. 4.3

Slight dogleg right, with trees that guard the right half of the green. If the pin is on the right, being in the fairway is a mistake.  You must be well left to have any angle into this shallow green.

Hole 10 - Par 3, 220 yards - avg. 3.3

While the tee and green are at roughly the same elevation, you are required to carry a 30ft deep gorge to a small elevated green. OOB long, and bunkers right make for a very challenging tee shot.

Hole 11 - Par 4, 361 yards - avg. 4.3

Very simple straight away hole. Approach shot is blind to a green with lots of break.

Hole 12 - Par 4, 285 yards - avg. 2.7

Very easy drivable par 4. Plays easier than half of the par 3s in my opinion. No defense for this hole. Eagle opportunity/easy birdie with a good tee shot.

Hole 13 - Par 3, 186 yards - avg. 3

20ft uphill to a very small green that falls off short and right. Not an easy up and down from anywhere. Quite a difficult hole.

Hole 14 - Par 5, 519 yards - avg. 5.3

Easy downhill 2 shot par 5. The biggest challenge is that your approach shot has to be hit off a severe downslope. Green is flat and holds very well.

Hole 15 - Par 5, 538 yards - avg. 5

The only 3 shot par 5 on the course. This hard dogleg left hole is 50ft uphill, and plays closer to 575yds. The fairway slopes hard from left to right, which makes finding this fairway almost impossible. Everything about this hole sets up poorly for me.

Hole 16 - Par 4, 325 yards - avg. 4

With the lake and OB left, this hole presents quite the risk-reward opportunity. You can take driver and be within 40 yards of the green or lay back with an iron and have a full approach shot. This green is very small with lots of break.

Hole 17 - Par 3, 115 yards - avg. 3.3

115 yards... sounds easy right? Wrong, this hole plays 40ft uphill to a green that is 8 paces from back to front. I can barely get my 52° wedge to hold this green. Any chip from off the green guarantees an awkward lie.

Hole 18 - Par 3, 183 yards - avg. 2.7

And last but not least, have you ever tried hitting a beach towel from 185 yards? This green is 6 paces wide, and 3 of those paces fall of to the left. You have to land the ball in a 9 foot area to hold the green. You can’t even stay on the green chipping from the right. This hole makes me want to send a nasty letter to whomever designed it.

Postage stamp greens all day and finish on a 183 par 3, wooooooooof. That sounds like a fun but tough day Right there

Yikes, that's tough.

@GB13, do you know the history of the course? Have the greens always been this small?

We have a few locally with really small greens like this, but it's been the product of less and less mowing each year. So they started out larger and have gradually shrunk as the greens keepers' upkeep dwindled.

@GB13 -  How do you feel about the transition from a "player's" iron to a "player's distance" iron?  I know you haven't had many rounds yet, but I'll be curious if you're able to control the flight like you would with your i200s.

We have a similar hole in our league - we play whites regardless of age/length, but one par 5 is pretty long and a good carry just to reach the fairway. About half our league are retirees and really struggled on that hole so we voted and decided we will play the Sr tees on just that hole. When I hit the fairway, I can be looking at a 6 or 7 iron to the green.
