1 iron

Yes this is what it looks like, backstory, back in the day, I used to hit irons off the tee a lot, And was very good with them, I found his beauty in the early-mid 90's, I forgot I had it, but some things you just keep on the box. Anyway, I was playing Wednesday and ran in to our asst. pro, he is a bit older, late 60's early 70's, he plays some old traditional blade irons, and he is also a lefty, he was talking about how he used his old blade 2 iron to set up birdie on the long par 4 17th hole, and he said something about how he would use a blade 1 iron of he could find one, but he can't find one in Left handed. I looked straight at him, and said, I have a 1 iron head in the garage at home if you want it, he said bring it and I'll show you how to hit it too. So this will go to our asst pro, Pavel. Awesome, I have a 1i in my backup set.  I bring it out once or twice a season and make everyone hit it, then it goes back in the garage.

I've thought of throwing a hybrid shaft in it and attempting to use it as a driving iron, but I like my hybrids too much to actually put it in play.

I knew that I had it in my club making box, but never thought about bringing it out, so when he said that I was like, it's yours, he will use it, so a once dead unused fade into the sunset club, it will find life again on the green grass.

The first set I borrowed from a buddy had a Great Big Bertha 1 iron in it. I didn't know any better at the time, but I wish I would've kept it.

I have several 1 irons and can still hit them. I carry an old Tourney 985 in my vintage set but I did take the X100 out of it that I hit for years. I carry and play the 2 iron in my regular set of Macgregor VIPs now it is bent back to 18* and is for tee use only or if on a real fluffy lie in light rough.

Kor A Dor that is a wonderful thing you did there giving your Pro that 1 iron because that is especially rare for a lefty 1 iron. I rescue clubs at work off the scrap pile because I can not stand to see a good club go to the shredder. I end up usually giving them away I gave away two Bullseye putters like that recently

Hmm interesting, I've been using a Mizuno Fli hi 2 iron I can hit 250s or 210, not sure I've ever seen a 1 iron in person.

Big Stu I figured you have something like that, I could probably put a nice shaft in this and still hit his from the tee, but with all the new more forgiving clubs I don't have a need for it, to be honest I'm not sure why I stopped using this club, progress I guess.

Most guys I knew that even had/played a 1i iron referred to them as a Knife.

That Striker 1i pictured above looks more like a game improving 1i. If you've ever seen the old blade 1i's from way back I think you'd understand how they could be called a Knife.

I used to play a H&B 2 iron.......it had a fiberglass coated steel shft....if I can get a good pic of it, I'll post.  This was my "go to" club on a windy day.  From my recollection, it was probably manufactured in the 1940's.

He plays old Wilson blades from way back. The 1i I had is a cavity back, and it was small enough, I can imagine how the old blade 1i would look like, unfortunately for him they are extremely difficult to find in LH.

@Fireinthehole - if you think you're special because you hit your 2 iron 250 to 210 I could hit my 1 iron (yes I carried one for a summer because Jack Nicklaus did and we all wanted to be like Jack) 230 to 30.  I could also hit it low or high and it was the one club that I could hit both right to left and left to right.  Sadly I had no clue which of those numbers or trajectories would come up when I hit it.  I do recall that I hit the 30 yard shot as if I were in a bunker - you know 4 inches behind the ball. :)

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Let's get Rover in here and we can rehash the debate on whether the Fli-Hi's actually count as 2 irons!

Special? oh no! When you can't hit driver or find your self under a tree, a 2 iron is the only way to get around! I can't hit a draw to save my life with that thing just a high straightish fade. Its helped ease the transition from the horrible winter golf I played.

The last 1 iron I carried was a Cleveland VAS in the late 90's when I was playing in college. That club was great when I struggled with driver and worked well with the old wound balls. Now I would be lucky if I could get it airborne.

I didn't carry any woods until I was about 21, I had Maruman 41cx irons 1 through SW.

The 1 and 2 irons wee so small, but I could play them off the tee or deck pretty damn well.

I'd break my arm trying to play them now I reckon!

Rest in peace long sticks - I'll remember you
