I suck at golf!

If score is the singular measurement, then I must admit that I am not very good in that context.    However, I like to think or hope that I am a good golfer from another perspective, a social perspective.   That golf is a game to be enjoyed with old friends and, hopefully, new ones.  After a round what is more important to hear from your playing companions--you play a good game or I enjoyed playing with you.   If its the latter, in my opinion, you are a good golfer from that perspective.  You understand what I perceive to be the important goal of golf and have succeeded.

I always enjoy hearing that someone enjoyed playing with me, and that's what I look for when I play.  However, if I play a decent round I also really like hearing that I play a good game.  Who doesn't?  

 

To paraphrase... The measure of a good golfer is being able to enjoy a round with playing companions even if you think you suck at golf.

Score is just something to stroke the ego. Enjoying the company and the journey is what I try to get out of any round of golf. No matter how much we suck on any given day there is always that one shot that brings us back. I think at times we have a love hate relationship with this game and I believe that's why we continue to play.

Oh man .. I sucked at both today...

 

Had trouble getting anything going on the course, and had a bad attitude about it, to boot.

Redeemed myself .. attitude-wise at least .. a bit yesterday. Still had a worse than hoped for score but mostly hit the ball decently enough and stayed positive, and .. enjoyed the round!!!

Soooo if we are all honest to the bone, we suck at golf!  If you don't,,,,, then you need to flap ya frigging wings and fly on up to Heaven...  Most of us suck at golf and if ya don't so be it....

 

Disclaimer: when it comes to golf and my game, I'm the biggest cheerleader of me. When it comes to my game I'd find 2 positive things to say about my rounds before I can think of one negative. It's muscle memory. I'm done treating "me" bad.

 

I suck sometimes, sure. Given the amount of practice time, thoughts and planning I put into my game then I suck all the time. That said, I take extraordinary amount of comfort in knowing I suck less than a lot of people.

 

I remember playing one round with strangers (at the time I was a 4), I was playing poorly missed a few more fairways and approach shots not as sharp, at the turn one of them said "Wow you are playing really well are you like a 10 hc?" Naturally, I just said well yeah I'm a 10, thanks.

 

As sucky as you think you are, there's some poor saps out there wishing they can shoot "your sucky round". I once broke 100 playing left handed on a bet, I told one of the lefty I played with as a joke, he said I wish I break 100 today.

 

Life is good when I play golf, I'll take it anyway it comes.

I was absolutely pounding my drives yesterday dead center and long.  I remember not too long ago when my driver was my least favorite club in my bag.  Now when I take a smooth slow and low back swing and don't get over zealous on the down swing, it's downtown Charlie Brown. The problem area where I'm sucking now is my iron play which is odd for me as that was my favorite part of my game. My driver and my putter are now fun however I got to get the irons back on track to shoot those better scores.

A good friend of mine died while scuba diving in the Grand Caymans two years ago.  He really enjoyed the times when we played golf, and he really sucked at the game.  These signs remind me of the plaque he had hanging over his desk in his office...  

 

"If they don't have golf in heaven, I'm not going!"

Had a good coaching session yesterday and he showed me how to move better through the swing, and I'm going to be working working working on this until I can no longer Post in this topic!!!!!

I haven't checked in here in a while. Just so you know, I still suck.... but beer and buddies make it better!

Just had my second child in 3 years (I'm an old parent lol).  Playing less than I ever have.  Used to be in 3 weekday leagues, skins on Sat, various scrambles etc. on Sun.  Now I find myself needing a sub for my only league/day I play.  Obviously the game has suffered tremendously.  Last Thursday on 9 holes, par 35 I shot a 37 with three birdies.  Not upset with the 37, but the triple and the double certainly stung a little.  Especially when the triple was a snowman on a par 5 that I am usually hitting an 8 iron into the green on my 2nd shot.  The whole season has been nothing but blow-up holes killing my round.  Not considering giving it up, but I really need to make time to put in more practice.  Maybe a home sim that I can set up next to the nursery

Understand what you mean by blowup holes.  I am okay with bogeys,  but doubles, triples, and worse just shouldn't happen in my game.

Nice. Recovery to an 89. If I started out with a quad (and I have), my score would be triple digits.

If driver yips are a thing, I've got ‘em. Haven't played much this season yet, because of the weather, but the few times I've been out it's been streaky. Today was no exception. Some good shots, but also some weird low hook shots that I've never had before.

 

The weather needs to stay warm so I can practice more.

I agree - the drive (for me) sets the tone for the rest of the game.

Didn't even carry a driver last season....

 

Maybe this year, but we'll see how the first few range practice sessions go and then maybe give it a few swings there, too.

I sucked at golf today because I left my good grip for an old grip style that led to duck hook after duck hook!   I went from ten finger to double overlap and I started hooking the crap out of the ball.  I cruised in with a 44 and finished with a 45 however it felt much worse! Sooooo good or bad for the rest of 2018 I will stay with my ten finger grip.   I'm gonna whup some arse with it too!

Last time I played, I did the same thing (I've always played a ten finger grip and tried an overlap) with exactly the same result. I don't think I'd ever hooked the ball in my life. Ever. Needless to say that grip lasted about 6 swings and went away.
