If you haven't heard of deWiz before, you're not alone. Here's a quick insight into what deWiz says about their product: "deWiz is a wearable piece of technology featuring a patented biofeedback system designed to help golfers swiftly and efficiently implement crucial swing changes. As the golf season winds down in various parts of the world, deWiz could potentially emerge as the perfect companion for those keen on refining their game during the off-season. What's more, this versatile device can be used both indoors and outdoors, with or without a club.

Recently, deWiz revealed its much-anticipated "On-Course Mode," which has earned the stamp of approval from the USGA. This feature means you can access the same insightful swing analysis whether you're in the comfort of your home office or competing for your Club Championship.

For many golfers, this time of the year offers an ideal window for making swing changes and taking lessons. With all that said, we're seeking four dedicated golfers to thoroughly test, review, and keep the deWiz Golf Swing Modifier. Priced at $599.99, it represents a significant investment. Is it worthy of a spot on golfers' wish lists for the upcoming holiday season? How well does it perform on the course and during practice at home? These are just some of the questions we aim to answer through the testing process.

Introduction

Hello to my fellow MGS members, for those that don’t know my name is Evan. I have been lucky enough to test before, so I have written a couple introductions over the years, and I am not sure what works best. If you want the basics I 31, married with 3 kids, and have no interest in fighting. I obviously enjoy golfing and am a bit obsessed since I spend free time reading, talking about, and testing golf equipment and golf course architecture, sorry to my wife for all that.

To add to the coolness factor, I am a data person, it is what I do for a living now. Though I do tell myself I have not gone too far yet as I don’t collect and analyze data on my which toys my kids play with to ensure I optimize play. Being interested in data is what got me applying for the deWiz test.

Thank you to deWiz and MGS for the opportunity, and the mod team for helping to pull off theses test as I know they are no small feat (I did almost type that as feet).

My golf game has improved but like many I am always hoping to take it to the next level. I am doing the Stack that way when I block the ball I am sure it gets into the woods instead of landing short. I also have worked with Shot Scope data to help improve my game a bit and plan around the course better. I am still working on driver and iron consistency which is where I think deWiz can help. Working to minimize my slice which is my dominant miss with the driver. Looking through the material on the deWiz site tracking how you transition and the full hand path visual should provide some awesome data. I even think pairing it with time on a launch monitor will really take this to a new level for my practice. I can only hope one day all this tech will have my looking like this to make sure everything is dialed.

I also look forward to wearing the device while I speed train to see how my mechanics change and what differences there might be in my fastest swings that helps me get that speed. Then the on-course mode should help me understand while on the range I can feel like this but on the course it’s a whole different ball game. The final area they mention to use it is wedge matrix as the device measures back swing length, something I can always improve on. Stick shots inside of 100 yards could really improve my scoring.

I am sure there are plenty of other ways to use the tool I will think of as I take a deep dive (is there any other type of dive?) into everything it has to offer. I am excited to get things started and the shipping notification is already out, and I looked through the deWiz app at some sample data and it really does seem interesting. Thank you again to deWiz ad MGS for this opportunity! So now the longest wait!

Unboxing/First Impressions (8 out of 10)

First off thank you deWiz for such a quick turnaround and shipping. From turning in our info to the device showing up was just under a week, which is much appreciated given how hard waiting is, just ask my kids. The device showed up in drum roll and box which I opened to find …. Another box which contained …. One last box before I found the deWiz. The packaging was sturdy, and everything looked great. Included was lots of instructions and safety notices for the learning stimuli, more on that in a bit.

The device, which I keep wanting to call a watch given how watch sized it is, clean and quality look to it. I took some photos of it compared to the Garmin running watch I wear all the time. They are a similar is size but the deWiz is just a bit thicker given the need for the gyroscope in there that is to be expected. I have a Shot Scope for tracking and wear it on the same wrist so if I tried to wear both on course things could get weird. That would likely be an either-or proposition. The only downside is that the charger is deWiz specific with a few pins like other watch chargers so you no losing it if you want to keep using the device.

In my first go around with the device things went pretty well. There were the usual firmware updates needed which installed quickly. Also, after one session I turned it off then to start the next session it needed to calibrate by sitting on a table or my counter for a second, then the next session was ready to start. I got some baseline numbers which helped quickly identify what I need to work on. A little over the top, arms move away from my body as I start down and I stand the shaft up. This held up with some no club practice swings I did indoors (one of the best options so I can work on this more often).

   

 

It was a perfect encapsulation though of what makes a device like this so valuable. The feel versus real. There is no fudging the numbers on the device, if you come over the top a bit then that will show in the data. If you throw the hands away from your body as I have, then it’s time to work on that. Of course, the tool also gives you that ability to run a practice session working one metric at a time. A real plus given how many data points there are it can be hard to work about just one thing at a time. Below shows how I was able to move from my first swings to another motion using the Practice and Learn session (more on that in the thread. The first couple of goes with the device just really show what is possible with deWiz. It is something that I feel you can pick up everyday and put in that 15 minutes to work on your swing rain on shine. Now I have to get back to it, because if I learned anything so far, it’s that I have work to do.

First off I want to again thank MGS and deWiz for this testing opportunity. I know the work that goes into securing these and the trust on the company sending product to forum members and trusting a review will follow. Thank you for the work and trust everyone. Now to dive into the final review.

Aesthetics (10 out of 10)

The deWiz is flat out a clean product. The simple logo in the center, one button, and one light makes the overall look as polished as I think it could be. The rubber strap is a solid weight and all the parts to secure it to your wrist have worked well. One time I even got it on there a bit too much, which was great to see as my first impression was that the strap might be prone to coming loose. Instead, it was the exact opposite, with the deWiz always feeling firmly attached to my writes throughout the swing.

 

The Numbers (17 out of 20)

First, the deduction in points here has nothing to do with the accuracy of the device. I have every confidence that each number presented by the unit is accurate. I tried some exaggerated moves both over the top, on to the inside, or flattening the club, and the deWiz highlighted this in the track, like the swing below where I went a little Furyk style.

 

There is a wealth of information here that can really help you dissect feel versus real in real time. That is an invaluable tool to be able to work with. Knowing my tempo and transition are generally good, but that I tend to stand the club up is something that you might be able to see through video but much of this is very small movements that would be hard to see. The deWiz with its simple setup and straightforward app shows you this information very quickly and with clear explanations and examples about what each number is and a goal to shoot for.

A couple things I did not find helpful, one is the learning stimuli. I just did not see the need for a human shock watch type features when practicing tempo or transition. The app can make a audible tone when you miss the mark, and that feels like plenty. I might be missing the advantage of it or science behind it, but to me it felt totally unnecessary.

by far the best feature though is the distWedge challenges and being able to set up a wedge matrix. Distance control inside 100 is something we can all work on and the deWiz is  great tool for this. Checking if each swing is as long as you think and practicing hitting those various spots is invaluable. I noticed a big improvement while I used the device and have a solid matrix to practice all off season. While every session might not be a 93 it would not have been possible with out the deWiz to practice this.

 

 

 

On-Course (18 out of 20)

I want this section to specifically highlight the on-course mode of the device. While the current weather here in NH is not letting me get on course, I went for a sim round and tried out the mode. So, the basics are that in this mode you don’t see each swing as it happens the device is always looking for a swing and if it detects one it adds it to the list and you say what hole it was on, what club you used, and where the ball went.

The data entry was simple, though you definitely want to edit after each hole or even swing, especially if you take practice swings. Also, accuracy might can suffer if you are not still before a shot, but you get a little warning about that and if you take a beat before you swing you should be all set. The photos below show the summary you get from the round.

It is powerful to run your swing under pressure and then see how it compares to range work, and practice. I would say some short swings would be nice to capture, or putting, but it was noted that this would not be captured by deWiz, but maybe in the future it can be added. I would also say that I would only use this occasionally on course to check out things are going. Running it each round feels like a lot of data and might overwhelm and slow me down on course.

 

 

The Good, the bad, the inbetween (17 out of 20)

I want to highlight the app here. As I mentioned above the app is simple to work with and intuitive to final all the data that you are working with. The different practice modes plus on course mode is controlled by the app and offers great variety. From practicing your wedge matrix to your transition there is a lot there to work with. The history of each session is easy to look through and then review each swing, and the addition of trending averages for all the metrics really helps you see the progress. There is a lot of data that could get very confusing to track and find, but that app really does make this easier.

There are a few things that would be great to add such as being able to filter past sessions by the type so I could see my wedge work separately from my full swing work, especially in those charts. Also being able to have the practice sessions on more metrics that transition, tempo, and backswing length. Personally, my big issues was steepening the club and I would have loved a focused session on that. Overall though the app is top notch and really is the engine that drives the product, and I can only imagine it will continue to add new functionality to deWiz owners.

 

Play it or Trade it? (14 out of 20)

I struggled with this section the most in the review. I think deWiz is a great device, with the power to really help someone analyze there swing accurately and in a way that is not possible without something like Gears. Of course, deWiz is a faction of the cost of a system like that. The biggest issue I have found is in trying to take this great data the system has given me and apply it. I feel like a carpenter trying to build a house without a blueprint. I can move the numbers a bit with exaggerated moves, but not in a way that seems like I am improving my swing. When trying to make sure I was shallow in sim work I could not make good contact at all because I changed the chain of how everything works in my swing. I needed a coach to help me if I wanted to move that metric and get the matchups that support it. Using, I needed a map for the tour it was trying to take me on. I might keep the device, but I really feel it is best used with a coach to then track progress to get the most out of the device.

Conclusions

Overall, the deWiz is a great product with some powerful use cases. The data it tracks for the price point is a great value. Being able to truly see how your hands are moving throughout the swing, in practice and on course provides powerful data to be able to improve. This improvement comes best with a coach to help matchup the changes the device so clearly highlights you should work on.

About me

I’m a now 41 year old architect in Southern California and as of this moment am currently hovering a few tenths on either side of an 11 index.   I have a 4 year old little girl, two dogs, and a wonderful wife who tolerates my love of the game.  I’m obsessed with every aspect of Golf.  It's all I really want to talk about outside of my family and profession and I spend too much ( or just enough?) time on golf related activities.

 I gravitate toward any information that can teach me more about the game.  I also love testing/tweaking/rebuilding new or new to me equipment and can often be found perusing used club bins for the 'next' thing to try out.  I love tinkering (learning) about equipment & my swing.  My garage has evolved from pure storage into what I've decided to call the "The center for middle aged dudes who can't golf good, but want to learn to do golf and other things good too." 

About my game

For once, I'm reasonably happy with my game.  All part of my have more fun goal for the next year.  It's at 11ish and relatively easy to maintain in that place.  Driving/Approach/Short/Putting are all in reasonable spots.  I'm in line with typical statistics for my index for fairways hit, gain some strokes putting, am in line with average up and downs, and am weakest on approach.   I need to shave a few things here and there and find a bit more consistency in my approach which is where I'm focusing my practice right now.  Lots of drills,  lots of swings, lots of video, lots of subtle adjustment.  I'm intrigued about how deWiz can help with my practice and whether or not the data can accelerate training.  I'm looking forward to wading through all of it to see if I can make adjustments more quickly with quick verifiable feedback. 

Final Testing Methodology

I did get the deWiz out on the course several times, spent a lot of time at the range, and hit quite a few shots inside my garage.  Since arriving on my doorstep a month ago I've put in just shy of 800 swings while wearing the deWiz. I'd intended to hit a lot of shots in front of the Garmin R10, but the two just did not get along with each other for a variety of reasons that I put more on the R10s finicky nature.

UNBOXING 

For simplicity’s sake I just recorded myself opening the box. The unit is nicely packaged, but it does include boxes for boxes which while nice on the packaging side seems a bit wasteful to me.

First Impressions & Aesthetics 

Aesthetics 10/10

The Device

The deWiz watch unit is very simple and there’s zero fat to trim – it has a charging port, two contacts for the learning stimuli, a single LED, and one large button under the logo.  Pair that with a highly adjustable silicone wristband and that's what you get.  It's most definitely a tool, not a fashion statement.   However, in spite of the utilitarian nature, it still looks and feels nice enough that it didn't stand out when I forgot that to swap it out for my actual watch and wore it to a client meeting while wearing a suit.   

The App and Web portal 

Data presentation can be very difficult (particularly with a lot of complex data) and in my opinion deWiz does it exceptionally well.   It's all presented in a very easily understood format with question circles that explain what each stat means.   The hand path shown on the mannequin does an exceptional job of visually conveying the data.

The web portal uses a visually simple plot chart to show your statistics over time.and can also be used to compare your numbers to the Pros (ambassadors) that deWiz has contracted with.  It's a cool feature that I wish they would expand upon to allow us to overlay our own swing over the pros.   

First Impressions 10/10

I really liked the on-boarding process.   Once the order was confirmed, I started getting emails from the deWiz team about setting up an account, downloading the app joining the Facebook group, links to the YouTube account, how the device worked, etc.   it made receiving the device and getting started pretty seamless.  It was also a nice touch for the price point of the item.  They want you to get the most out of it. 

By the time I had the box with the watch in hand I was pretty well versed in how the thing worked.  When the package was delivered I filmed the unboxing, put the watch on the charger for a bit, and was swinging with feedback inside 30 minutes.

The numbers 19/20

The goal with devices like this (IMHO) is to help you build a more consistent swing. Being able to make the same swing over and over brings with it repeatable results. At a high level deWiz is designed to do exactly this.  It claims longer, straighter, closer and the training sections are designed with that purpose in mind with four specific practice sections.   

To get the most out of the practice modes it helps to know where you're starting from. That's where Discovery mode comes in. This is where you can just pick your club and swing away to set a baseline for your metrics. You don't necessarily have to do this but it's a good spot to learn about the different metrics the deWiz gives you. It's also a great place to find out where you are in relation to the norms deWiz has established for the different metrics.

Modes

From there it's very easy to jump into the practice modes. Length of Backswing, Transition, Tempo, and Distance Wedges. Each of these modes is (IMHO) directly aimed at meeting deWiz’s claims of Longer, Straighter, Closer.   

Length of Backswing

The easiest of the claims to look at is Longer. This is accomplished in Length of BackSwing mode. This one is basically just physics. At a simplistic level longer backswing = more space for the hands to build up speed before transferring that into the club at release. More hand speed = more club head speed = more ball speed = longer. In reality it's a fair bit more complex than that, but at its core I found this to be true. Something you can see by watching how wide and deep pros like Rory, Bryson, and others who just mash the ball get with their hands.  

Transition

This mode, to me, checks the box for straighter. The goal is to transition from backswing to downswing neutrally and on plane. There's obviously a lot of places the club head can be even if your hands are on a plane, but I've found that I can't swing super over the top or under plane without the transition number going way outside the norms.    

Tempo 

The ideal tempo according to deWiz and others on the internet is 3:1 – meaning backswing is 3 times as long as downswing. This ties in with straighter and longer since (for me) getting too quick or too slow in a swing can lead to poor contact. I spent the least amount of time in this mode since I’m pretty consistently between 2.8:1 & 3:1 already. 

 DISTWedges

This mode is all about closer. It's all about building feel for exactly how far you're pulling a wedge back. It's about consistency and repeatability.

I spent a lot of of time in this mode, but less for touch wedge shots and more for building a very consistent ½, ¾, and full swing. I was focused on hitting a very specific backswing length for each since it became apparent that my ½ swing had a six inch variation on the length of my hand path. The same with my ¾. 25 percent variation on a ½ swing! No wonder my touch game st 25-70 yard game is terrible.  

My Numbers

The hand path that is traced by deWiz is uncanny accurate. It looks exactly like what I see in video of my swing except it's a mannequin on my screen. It also captures one of my typical faults – early extension shanks in painful detail. (Something that IMHO should be getting the negative chirp even if transition, tempo, and length of Back Swing are good)

This is an admittedly small sample size since this a fairly quick test, but my Swing is feeling decidedly more repeatable from the perspective of the deWiz. Transition is mostly inside or just outside the norms of 1 to -1, Tempo is good right around 3:1, and I'm very much on plane after having ironed out some swoopy kawaswing hand path issues.   

Admittedly, it hasn't been a panacea for everything. The connection, sway, and weight transfer faults that rear up every now and then are still there. deWiz is helping in that front, but it isn't quite as clear as its main focus areas. It requires both a deeper dive into the data and a more manual and tedious approach by checking numbers and path after each swing.

And... Here's a shank.  One of the few moments where my R10 worked.   Take note that the R10 reads this as face open.  

On Course – my game 9/10 & On Course mode –  3/10.   Total: 12/20

I'm doing this section a bit differently since there's really two parts that make up this section.  How I'm playing and the actual on course mode.

My game

Through a combination of focus on transition, tempo, and length of Backswing I've seen a small but noticeable jump in distance off the tee.    It's less about max distance and more about seeing higher carry and total numbers more often – both in finding myself hitting from further down the fairway and seeing the ball carry to the end of range targets I usually bounce into. 

My approach game remains relatively poor, inaccurate, with not great contact.  This is somewhat typical for me as I struggle with winter conditions this time of year because of less than perfect contact, but it feels like I'm having a a regression. It feels very much like after a lesson where you're trying to make a big swing change. There are flashes of the change but those moments of brilliance are accompanied by parts of the round where you feel like you can't hit a golf ball anymore.   

The good news is that when the good strikes come they feel excellent… and they're long.   In the last 27 holes I've flown the green more times than I have all year.  I'm headed in a positive direction in spite of frustrating moments. High marks for this portion.

Maybe I can just chuck my long irons if I hit the 7 iron like this?   All but 5 of that 178 is carry. 

On course Mode 

It's a neat idea.   Collect data about your swings in a USGA complaint method that presents no direct feedback during the round.  Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that well.  I really wanted to like this feature, but it just is not up to snuff with the rest of what deWiz has to offer.   

Admittedly it's a relatively new feature, but I just find it too cumbersome in its current form.   All of the ease of use with the practice modes goes right out the window and even standing very still I had trouble with getting it to read swings.  Combine that with manual data entry for each club and the shot result on every shot and it just takes too much focus away from playing.   IMHO, it would be much more effective to just use Discovery mode and play a non-postable practice round.  It feels a lot like a beta test.  Negativity aside, I do think there's a lot of potential for the mode. It just needs better execution and maybe an understanding that it should work more like an on-course lesson that's not USGA compliant.   I'm looking forward to future updates and iterations.  

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE INBETWEEN (16/20)

THE GOOD

I place a high priority on ease of use for my game improvement tools for one reason.   If it's simple to use, I'll use it a lot more often.  This is one of the reasons that my SC200+ sees far more use than the Garmin R10 I bought to replace it.  This is doubly true when it provides rapid feedback.   The funny part about this is that if I was going to compare deWiz to an improvement product I would compare it to an R10.   It's a sophisticated piece of game improvement tech, its at the same price point, and it provides a mountain of data.  It's not the same data, but the concept is similar. Having experience with both the deWiz is the one that I'd give the nod too. 

Its ease of use cannot be beat.   Aside from the on course mode and level 7 on the learning stimuli. . I found it to be a very pleasant, low drag experience that didn't take away from what I was working on even if my practice goal wasn't related to the app.

THE BAD

On course mode

I won't rehash it, but it's not a mode I'll be using very often.   Certainly not for 18 full holes.   That said, I'm not deducting any more points because of it.  

The watch band

It's good, but it's not replaceable (at all?) in the same way that most other watch bands are.   I'm living in fear that I’ll knock it off the charger onto the floor and not notice, only to find it on my bed sans watch band courtesy of my terrier.   Lastly it's one size fits all and I'm at the last holes.   If you're my size (6'-1 and well built with added fluffy padding)it may not fit you.

Proprietary charging cables

In a world full of interchangeable charging cables, I question why the decision was made to go with a novel charging cable.   It just isn't necessary.

THE IN BETWEEN

The cost

The price is pretty steep and I would argue that you'd be better served spending the money on a series of lessons first.   If you have basic knowledge you can get something out of it, but can you get the most out of it?   I'm just not sure.   I feel like you either need to have a deeper understanding of the swing to get the subtleties out of it or need to be working with a coach that understands what the data means.

Full Swing

Speaking of swing, while it is a powerful device, deWiz isn’t going to fix everything.  Great hand path/tempo/ transition or not you still have to deliver clubface to ball.   There were many swings I made with deWiz that look great, in the app, but didn't result in anything approaching a good shot.   It's worth bearing in mind that while deWiz is a fantastic tool it's only for part of your swing.   

Learning stimuli.  

I’m sure there's some utility in the even faster (mid swing) feedback from it.   I'm just not quite sure I want to shock myself to get it.   

Getting the device to read.  

In order to get the device to register a swing you have to stand still.   The led on the watch will flash green and your phone or tablet will sound an audible tone.  I found the to be a much more functional trigger that it was okay to swing.   To see the LED you have to be focused on your wrist and not the ball.   It will take a moment to get used to if you have a waggle.

The app. 

It's good, just not quite great.   There's some UI elements that are brilliant (the circle question mark to understand what each metric does) and others that are head scratchers.   Here's a few examples.  

• Changing a club within a session creates an entirely new session composed of a single session.
• No ability to combine sessions to cleanup the clutter.  
• Changing swings when viewing a previous session is cumbersome.  Why can't I swipe left or right to switch swings inside a session?  
• None of this is game breaking, but it is something that could be smoothed out for a better experience.

Play it or Trade it 20/20

 

Play it.   The combination of data, instant feedback, and ease of use does it for me.  Of the golf gizmos and gadgets I've used this is at or near the top of the pile. The combination of ease of use, direct and effective feedback, and data has produced one of the best game improvement tools I've run across.   It isn't a one trick pony and the fact that I can see early extension or upright club in the hand path when that isn't the focus of the device is pretty impressive.  The positives far outweigh only the negatives

CONCLUSION

deWiz is a powerful tool for improvement.   There's a lot to like about it and very little to complain about.   It gives you immediate and direct feedback that has layers of depth depending on how much you want to get into it.  The amount of data you can get from it is pretty amazing, but it is also equally amazing that it's still useful even without getting into all that data.   If you've made it this far you know what I think it's best feature is.   Ease of use.   It's so simple that you'll use it all the time.  a the time. 

I've focused this review heavily on deWiz's utility as a game improvement tool and hopefully, this review has been informative for you.   If you think this is a tool that will work for you then I highly recommend it.  Its definitely a product that I would purchase.  One last FYI, it's worth noting that without the on course.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to MGS for selecting me as a tester for the deWiz Golf Swing Modifier. I am thrilled and honored to have this opportunity to contribute to our community of testers and readers.

I am committed to giving my best to ensure the test is thoughtful and honest. I struggle with consistency, so I will certainly put the deWiz to the test!

Introduction:

My name is Marc and I'm a United States Marine Veteran proudly living in the Syracuse, NY area. 

I served on active duty from 1993 to 2000, specializing as a Field Radio Operator – you know, the guy who's often the first in the line of fire. But I didn't stop there; I also had the incredible opportunity to be a Marksmanship instructor at Parris Island. Yes, that meant I got to wear the iconic Smokey the Bear cover and passionately shout "instructions" at the recruits. Those were the days! I was stationed in some amazing places, including California (twice), Parris Island, South Carolina, and even Okinawa, Japan. While in Japan, we embarked on exciting "floats" (basically naval vessel taxi rides ) to South Korea, Thailand, and Australia. My time in the Corps was truly something special.

However, in 2000, I was medically discharged, and that's when my lovely wife, Jennifer, and I decided to return to our roots here in Syracuse. We've been happily married since 1995, and our family has grown to include two wonderful adult kids, now 28 and 26 years old.

About my game:

Now, onto my other great passion – golf! I've been swinging clubs since 1995 and instantly fell in love with the game. Back at Parris Island, I had the privilege of playing 9 holes most days, and my golf game improved dramatically. I truly felt like a golfer. I continue to play as much as possible here in Syracuse. I have a foursome of buddies who I golf with every week.

But, as life went on, my game seemed to degrade almost in lockstep with the rest of my aging body (Thanks, Uncle Sam). Nevertheless, I continue to embrace the sport with enthusiasm and determination. My distance and consistency are no more, however I long to get those back. I cannot wait to challenge the deWiz product to see how it can help me and other golfers who struggle with consistency! I am great from 100 in...but getting there is a whole different story!

This is the closest I have been to a Hole in one......(YES, that ball is a Top-Flite...don't judge me lol)

Hey folks, pumped about this test to get my golf swing in check. Currently rocking a solid 80-105 range, but my misses are all about those fat hits and early release slices. Tried lessons, but my instructor ghosted me—what's up with that? Anyway, stumbled upon this product right when the test dropped, so fingers crossed for some serendipity!

Planning to do the test outdoors as much as I can, but Central NY winter is no joke. I have a local simulator to use for a baseline. Like many of you, I'm a data guy. I can't wait to see where I start and where I end up. Numbers will spill the beans. If I see improvement (with a mix of data and gut feeling), the device's a winner. If not (within the time limit), maybe it's more grind or just not my thing. Ive decided to stick with it post-test for months, share updates and all. No illusions—it's not a quick fix, gotta grind for golf gains. Promise you an honest, thoughtful review. I count on this community for my research, and I'll pay it forward. Cheers!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS/UNBOXING: 9/10

The deWiz golf swing modifier claims that it can help you hit longer, straighter, and closer utilizing their drills, data, and device.  Boy, do you have your work cut out for you. This is a common claim from many training device companies to drive sales and engagement from the golf community. To put it simply, they claim that you strap a watch looking device to your wrist, look at your data, and use the shock stimuli to get better at golf. We all know….it isn’t that easy (or is it?). On their site, you will see this tag line multiple times “The result – less guesswork and more consistency.”

As I stated in my introduction, I think I am a great test case for the device. I know that my swing/ball striking are wildly inconsistent.

Out of the box, the looks were exactly what I was expecting. The device was shipped quickly, and the packaging was as I expected. The box clearly stated what was inside and had a nice picture of the device on the outside. the deWiz was packed nicely and securely in the box. For comparison's sake, I put this next to my Apple Watch 45mm.

                 

AESTHETICS: 9 of 10

The deWiz feels good on the wrist and is light. I was very impressed with the band connections. For those familiar with Apple Watches, there are usually 1 or 2 prongs to connect the band. The deWiz has 3! It attached easily and is comfortable. Full disclosure, I did not charge MGS for the hand/wrist modelling photo:

 

The only thing I do not like is that this has a proprietary charging cable. 

I have used the device once so far and I like it.  Below is a bit of data that is provided via the app and web portal.....Stay tuned for more details and why I am comparing myself to Annika Sorenstam.

This is my first impression based on unboxing and one 1.5 hour simulator session. I cannot speak to on-course use, however I think it will be easy to use on course and provide the necessary feedback while playing. I like using the device. The data is fantastic and it is and easy device to use.

On the other hand, I did have some swings that were not recorded. As my luck would have it, the swings that were not recorded either had the best or worst ball flights. I would say this is due to the sensitivity of the device and any movement once it is ready to go (ready to record your swing) will render the swing unreadable. I ended us starting my swing right when the device was ready with no delay. I didn’t like that part, so I took off 2 points. Not a showstopper at all, but something to note.

That is why you see so many sessions noted in my charts.  I had one actual session with a number of “mini-sessions” because I thought that I needed to start over to get the device to get back to “zero”, if that makes sense. I attribute this to user error and lack of patience.

I also noticed that the learning stimuli is a bit delayed. I would get notified of a bad swing as I was hitting the ball, not during the downswing. Both of these areas of note may be due to user error/knowledge, but again, if I encounter something I don’t expect, I want you all to know.

You can compare your stats against a couple pros (Bryson, Vijay, Annika…), which is interesting. I used Annika as we are closer in size that I am to the others. I also know there is NO way I’m swinging like Bryson. My max backswing width is on par with Annika, so that is cool!

The Numbers (18 out of 20)

Setup:

The documentation within the box is only OK. I am only referring to the quick start guide and not the regulatory documentation (just like a EULA…who reads that anyway??)

The quick start guide has no words and is in B&W. Step 1 shows a light being “on”, but it doesn’t say what color. When I was charging the device, the light was blue. While that is fine, usually charging colors are Green/Yellow/Red. I know this is a small nit, however it should be mentioned. I was not sure if the device was trying to connect to Bluetooth or charging. (maybe it’s just me??)

The device charges fast enough for me. I don’t see this as something that would be a concern for a user. I only charged it after the 5th use...so about 10 hours. I am the guy who charges his phone if it hits 90%, so take that for what it is worth!

One suggestion – provide a small carry case. I normally wear a watch, so carrying another watch is awkward.

As noted before, one big pet peeve of mine has been breached, however. There is a proprietary charger required. While this is not a deal breaker, I cannot stand having to keep a special cable. It would have been nice to have a USB connection instead.  This is the reason for the 2-point (10%) deduction in this area. Everything else is very well done!

I did not go online for setup help, however I did watch videos to get the most out of the device. These videos are fantastic. I’d be happy to point them out to anyone who is interested. They are on the dewizgolf site. One cool one was the guy from GolfCity and how his over-the-top motion could be corrected by using the device and a drill. VERY HELPFUL!

To the heart of the numbers:

For me, the most useful metric/mode presented is the Transition. The Transition measures the difference between your backswing and downswing (over the top or coming from under). The measurement is taken approximately 20 cm into your downswing. A slicer will normally have a positive number (over the top - OTT), a player who hooks will likely have a negative number.

For the 85 swings I took in my initial session, I dramatically reduced my OTT swing. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong, I was able to shallow my swing and decrease my OTT by 2.8 inches. That is a huge change. Now, while my ball flight was negatively impacted, this is a process. I now have a feeling what a solid swing should be and what I need to do to get there.

You can compare your stats against a couple pros (Bryson, Vijay, Annika…), which is interesting. I used Annika as we are closer in size that I am to the others. I also know there is NO way I’m swinging like Bryson.

Honestly, there is no data provided that is not useful.

The online tool is also good and you can download your data to excel. The graphs provided online (the ones I used above) are easy to understand.

I do wish that I was able to see my swings individually online and replay them on a PC rather than my phone. You are able to “favorite swings” but they are not indicated in the online data set.

Once you use the on-course mode, you can see the differences between your practice and on-course. I'll talk about on-course performance in a bit. however I am not surprised that my on course numbers are worse than my practice numbers. Below you can see, when I am on course, I am coming in steeper than when I practice. Definitely something to work on!

This IDDy (A value of 0 means that your hands drop straight down. A negative number means that your hands move directly towards the target.) chart shows my improvement. Again, seeing data with results is the best way for me to improve.

On-Course (15 out of 20)

This is an area where I struggled with the device.  I had most of my swings occur that were not recorded. As my luck would have it, the swings that were not recorded either had the best or worst ball flights. I would say this is due to the sensitivity of the device and any movement once it is ready to go (ready to record your swing) will render the swing unreadable. I found this to be frustrating and not as useful as I would have liked.  All of that said, I think with more use on the course could help accuracy as I believe it is user error. I deducted a lot of points for this as it is not really user friendly.

In order to have the device record correctly, it would interfere with my routing, due to the inability to move. I know this is a ME problem, but I can't be the only person who doesnt come to a complete stop before every swing. I strongly suggest that there be a way to have the on-course mode be bifurcated to allow for the prompts. While this would eliminate use during competition, I never compete, therefore this means nothing to me. I am a recreational golfer. I think this would be a MAJOR help, is put into place.

The Good, the bad, the inbetween (17 out of 20)

My favorite part of this tool is the transition measurement. For those of us who come over the top, telling us that doesn't help. we can't feel "wrong" without help. THIS THING HELPS! The  data during practice sessions is amazing. I set up my phone on a tri-pod so I could easily see my results on each swing. 

I took off a couple points for the learning stimuli. I don't get it. With the prompts (all of this in practice modes, not on-course), the stimuli seem like a gimmick more than a useful tool. I started using the stimuli, but the delay between my swing error and notification was too long. I would come over the top, but I wouldn't be notified until after I hit the ball. I did not find that useful.

Another issue for me was the online documentation and measurements. All documentation is in cm. DeWiz should update all of this to be cm/Inches rather than just cm. I don't mean to come across as an arrogant American, but this should be an easy update/fix.

A suggestion would be to somehow link the swing up with a Trackman (or other device) to allow us to review the swing and results. That would be a game changer, for sure!!

Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20)

PLAY IT! For me, this is the absolute best swing tool I have ever used. I am just short of tin cup (you know the picture) when it comes to golf tools. This is very simple for me to explain - I now know what over the top feels like and what a correct swing feels like, period. The data and ease of use make this my favorite golf improvement tool. Period. This product is for grinders. If you are a good golfer, you can get better. If you are like me and average, but will work to get better, this is for you. If you want a quick fix, this tool isn't for you. 

 

Conclusion

The promise of refined skills through drills and data analysis fueled my anticipation of this device. Navigating the app and web portal, I appreciated the ability to meticulously track my progress and benchmark my stats against seasoned professionals. The data is incredible. The deWiz will remain an indispensable companion in my quest for consistent improvement. While expensive, if you want actionable data, I would suggest this to anyone.

deWiz Golf Swing Modifier - A review by GolfSpy_KFT

Introduction (11/16/23)

What's up fellow spies? I'll keep my introduction to the point as hopefully most have seen me around the forum by now. My name is Jason Noble, one of the Forum Mod leaders here at MGS, and I am thrilled to be testing the deWiz with this fantastic group of testers. I am a father to two boys, Myles (6) & Brody (4), and have been married to a woman out of my league for just over 9 years. Self diagnosed golf addict working hard at bringing my handicap closer to the single digit range. I started out the 2023 season at a 30.3 and worked it down to a 16.1. I have been working at improving my swing throughout the year, but there are some areas that I just cannot get over the hump on. Enter, deWiz. In my mind, this training aid is going to be a fantastic tool in shining a light on my swing deficiencies so that I know what specifically to practice on.

My main focus with the deWiz will largely be focused on the areas below:

• Do I truly have an over the top move?
•  What areas of my swing are causing my inconsistencies?
• Based on the data provided, can I tailor drills to help target the specific inconistencies?

I am entering about the best time of the year that I can be to use a device like this, as the offseason in Wisconsin is closing in quickly. If the deWiz can help me diagnose my swing issues, and provide the necessary feedback to help me improve those aspects, I believe it will help me take another leap forward in my game in 2024. 

Unboxing & First Impressions (10/10)

The deWiz swing training device arrived undamaged in a no frills box in the mail. The product box is clean and straightforward, holding within it the wearable device, a charging cord, and some instruction manuals.

Aesthetics (10/10)

The watch itself seems very high quality, and also is very comfortable. It is more lightweight than my Apple Watch SE and about the same size. When it is on my wrist I practically forget it is there. This is great for someone who does not like wearing a watch/device while swinging a golf club. 

On the bottom side of the device, there are two large silver nodes, which deliver the learning stimuli to your wrist when that is turned on during practice sessions. The zaps this device delivers are no joke, as yours truly decided right away to see what the highest level felt like. Once was enough, and anyone who sets this thing to 7 is truly a glutton for punishment as it ZAPS you to the point of actual pain.

(No, I won't be quitting my day job to become a hand model any time soon )

The Numbers (16/20)

I want to start this part of my review off by stating that the data the deWiz provides is thorough, and from what I can tell, very accurate. The primary data metrics of focus are transition, tempo, and length of backswing. There is also a Distwedges section, which emphasizes hitting specific backswing lengths with wedge shots. 

Transition is where I thought I would find the largest area to improve on, as I have typically struggled with a slice as my big miss since I started golfing. What I found, much to my surprise, was that my transition was typically within +/- 1" of plane on most swings. The deWiz only measures the initial portion of your transition, so it leads me to believe I am going wrong elsewhere in my swing, causing that miss. I know that I tend to early extend, so I am guessing that is where it comes from. However, if you didn't know that about your own swing, you'd get a positive response from the app that your transition is within the set range and wonder why you're still hitting a slice. This is where my first issue comes in as I am not great at diagnosing my own swing faults and do not regularly work with a coach for lessons. The video below gives a look at the different views you can see with swing path, as well as a list of the data metrics.

Another issue that I found is that I can make a swing that falls within good ranges on the focused data metrics, and still have a very poor strike. I think the deWiz is a good training tool, but you either need to be able to diagnose your own swing faults AND know how to correct them, or work with a coach that can help you do so in order to maximize the device. 

I struggled the most in two areas, max hand speed distance to impact and IDDy. deWiz does have a learning library which I found useful, but it would be a nice upgrade to the app, IMO, if targeted videos or training tips were provided to you based on areas that you don't fall into the target range.

On Course Mode (12/20)

I was only able to test the on course mode one time, so I can only speak to my experience with it on a limited basis. I found it to be quite frustrating, as it missed a decent chunk of shots I took. I experienced issues with it registering swings, which could possibly have been related to playing cart golf and not always having my phone right next to me while swinging. I had to turn the watch on and off multiple times to get it to re-establish a connection to the app. I can absolutely see the benefit to on course mode, as my transition was much more over the top than when I practice. It just goes to show how much can change within your swing when you leave the range. However, it felt cumbersome with having to go into the app after each swing to record the club, hole, shot direction, etc. Add that to the inconsistencies with recording my swings ultimately lead to a frustrating experience which could become a distraction during a round. I do believe this is a newer feature, and would not be surprised to see it become more user friendly.

Good/Bad/In Between (17/20)

Starting with the good, the deWiz collects a ton of data about your hand path on the golf swing. It provides valuable information, particularly for someone who suffers from a big slice or hook, if their initial transition is way over or under plane. For myself, because my transition is within a pretty good range, I don't find that metric as valuable as my issues must occur later in the swing. It is also an absolutely beneficial tool if you're working to lengthen your backswing to increase speed. Their online portal where you can compare your stats to their ambassadors, as our testers mentioned, is also quite cool. Seeing how your swing stacks up to some pros is neat, and it also shows that everyone's swing has unique characteristics. Here, you can see my max hand speed and distance to impact (biggest area of needed improvement, for me) compared to Henrik Stenson. 

For practicing in the Distwedges mode, you're able to set a maximum and minimum swing length (gears), and then set a tolerance for the training stimuli. You can then set it to manual, shuffle or random lengths, and you try to match those as you practice.

The Distwedges challenge is SUPER fun and if you're competitive, trying to beat your best score is a blast. This will end up being the feature I use the most as I think it could lead to a much improved short game. I am looking forward to being able to get outside with it and get on the course to figure out what length backswing produces what distance with those scoring clubs.

Moving to the bad, if you're not able to self-diagnose what you're doing wrong in your swing and do not have access to a coach for private lessons, it could be hard to improve. Yes, the learning stimuli gives you a jolt when you have it turned on; however, I did not find that after getting that shock delivered to my wrist, I was more prone to improve on the very next swing. Maybe for some it is more encouraging. For me, even with the setting at 4 and not comfortable in the slightest, it didn't seem to have a large impact as of yet. Also, the experience with on course mode was just not enjoyable, BUT, I can see where it can benefit from a learning standpoint (see below as I was much more OTT during a round than during practice settings). I am hoping that will become more user friendly as they continue to develop the app and device with firmware updates.

The in-between for me is really just related to the fact that there is so much data to digest that it maybe overwhelming for some users. I love seeing all the different metrics, but if that is not something you're interested in, this is not the training device for you. 

Play it or Trade It (18/20)

I will be continuing to use the deWiz throughout my offseason, as I do feel that I benefit from having the reminders that it provides with swing data. I do enjoy how easy it is to use in practice settings, and I have enough that I can improve on that using it should benefit my game come spring. I am hoping that the on course mode gets a little more user friendly, but as I already use Arrcos and like to utilize the Apple Watch app, I can't say I'll use it on course that often. I will definitely use it on the range for practice sessions and pre round warm ups.

Overall Score and Closing Thoughts (83/100)

Overall, the deWiz is a very cool and data loaded training device that can benefit golfers looking to improve their swing plane, backswing length, and tempo. It is highly accurate from what I can tell, and the Distwedge challenge is an awesome tool for improving your backswing control with wedges on scoring shots. If you are a data nerd, like I am, you will love this device. If you are someone who doesn't love data, or does not have a great understanding of how to change your swing without direct instruction, this trainging tool on it's own may not be the optimal device to improve your game. 

The deWiz also helped me establish answers to two of the three initial questions I had. 

• Do I truly have an over the top move?
  • NO, my initial move is actually pretty neutral, which is great to know.
•  What areas of my swing are causing my inconsistencies?
  • Based on IDDx/IDDy numbers, I am probably getting stuck in the downswing. Late max hand speed can also be a factor caused by my early extension.
• Based on the data provided, can I tailor drills to help target the specific inconistencies?
  • Not 100% on this...yet. I do think if they expand the capabilities of their app, this is absolutely possible.

Hey everyone I'm really looking forward to testing this product out. My name is Jay and I am the Director of Marketing at Sub 70. Over the last three years or so I've floated between a 0-4 handicap. The winters are long in the Midwest though and I have access to our fitting facility and have a simulator setup at home. I'm also a crazy person and will play if it's 40+ degrees and not raining. I struggled quite a bit with consistency this year and for the most part have always been a very shallow, in-out swing player. I've been working on getting the club going back on plane a little better and not getting stuck on my back foot. I have a good understanding of the golf swing but admittedly struggle with applying changes to my swing or feeling exactly what is happening. I think the deWiz Swing Modifier could be phenomenal tool to provide me with the feedback and information that I need to actually make noticeable improvements. More information to come but I am VERY excited to put this through the paces and also share it with our fitting instructors and other team members at Sub 70.

 

Update #1 - 11/17/23

I received my deWiz swing modifier earlier this week and finally put it through some proper testing this morning. 

FIRST IMPRESSIONS/UNBOXING: 9/10

The outside box that the unit arrives in is just a regular brown box. The actual product box is then inside so it's well protected. It's very minor but I think a deWiz branded outside box would make the presentation quite a bit better. The box the unit itself comes in is nice and everything is packaged as you would expect. 

I do not wear a regular or smart watch so one thing I was interested in was the clasp, size, comfort, etc when wearing the watch. It fits great and I can't imagine many people having an issue with sizing. I'm curious how the clasp will hold up over time. It has three prongs that go into the wristband and if it's put on and taken off from the same spot over and over I think it may wear out those spots a bit. The strap doesn't seem easily replaceable so hopefully that's never an issue.

 

Session 1 - The day I received the swing modifier I had a round planned so I brought it along. I tried using the On Course mode and unfortunately only 4 of my swings from the entire round registered. I can attribute that to a number of variables and 100% user error on my part though...

I don't keep my phone in my pocket and was riding in a cart. That being said, it should've been in Bluetooth range for 30+ of my shots...Basically every full swing shot. 

The primary issue is that I play and swing VERY fast. On the swing part I'm not talking about club speed but my natural setup and preshot routine are fluid and quick. The swing modifier requires you to address the ball for maybe 1-2 seconds before it chimes to let you know it is ready. I'm sort of in motion all the time and don't stand over the ball very long whatsoever. I'm sure when I go back on course and wait to make sure the swing modifier is ready it'll be totally fine. It'll just be a little strange for me because I'll have to force myself to address the ball and stay still. I really don't think this is an issue at all for 99% of people though. For whatever reason I just take a quick practice swing, pick a target, maybe waggle the club once and then hit the ball. 

 

Session 2 - I was able to test the deWiz swing modifier indoors on a launch monitor today. It's going to be interesting to compare data from the deWiz to the club data from the launch monitor. It was a relatively quick session, but I tried hitting about 10 shots without any manipulation, 10 shots with a significant in-to-out path (draw/hook), and 10 shots with an out-to-in path (fade/slice). My natural club path is 2-3° in to out at the moment. I'd like to get that a little more neutral and more importantly more consistent. 

I'm still learning which deWiz metrics are most closely tied to certain results...tempo, backswing length and a few others are relatively straightforward. There are really nice explainers like the one below for each metric 

Here is my data from both the launch monitor and the deWiz. They're in the order listed above (normal swing, draw/hook, fade/slice)

 

 

I need to take some time to dive into these a bit more...and there are more metrics to consider which I can share if they're of interest. But all in all so far I think it could be a very valuable tool IF you know what you are looking for and how it impacts your golf game

 

FINAL THOUGHTS

First Impressions (9/10) - more details above

Aesthetics (10 out of 10)

The device itself is high quality and comfortable to wear. As someone who doesn't wear a watch I had no issue wearing it while swinging a club. As noted in my first impressions post, I think they could spruce up the exterior box that it ships in but that is nitpicking. The box the device is in is perfectly adequate. The instructions are clear and the onboarding process with emails to training materials, support groups and other resources is very well done. The app itself is great as well.

 

The Numbers (17 out of 20)

There is no doubt there is a lot of data and information to glean from the deWiz swing modifier. The issue isn't how much data it provides but understanding and utilizing that data. I'm not a teacher or swing guru by any means, but my understanding of the golf swing is more advanced than most and even I found myself spending a lot of time watching videos, reading other posts and diving into other resources to understand what certain measurements were etc. I'm sure it would be a bit overwhelming for the average person and ultimately they probably wouldn't know what to work on...or put in the time/effort needed to really understand everything. Then again, I'm not sure this device is really target toward the "average golfer" given the price point and depth that it goes into. As other testers have noted...unless you are willing to put in the time/effort to truly understand the data then you would probably be better off having a teacher analyze the data and help guide you in the right direction. Once you identify the areas that can be improved on and establish some target numbers then it would be easy for anyone to work on at home, at the range or on the course. I do think it would be a great tool for golf coaches/teachers as you can identify potential areas for improvement pretty quickly and then try and dial those in over time through the Practice & Learn section. 

 

On-Course (17 out of 20)

Admittedly I am not the best tester for on course purposes. I just find it cumbersome/annoying to have to input data after every shot while I'm out playing with other people and trying to play quickly. I did test it out though and I think it would be a good tool for people who are interested in that kind of tracking. My only knock would be that due to my quick/fluid pre-shot routine I constantly had swings that did not show up. I had to purposefully pause over the ball. I don't think there's a way around that for deWiz...the device has to know you have addressed the ball and then measure the swing accordingly...but for me I had to go away from my natural process and rhythm if I wanted swings to register.

 

The Good, the Bad, the In Between (18 out of 20)

The app itself is great and the data is easy to go back and review. It's nice to be able to create the sessions, name them, compare certain values across sessions to track progress, etc. 

The device works as intended and provides a ton of information. What you do with that information is the more difficult part. I think it is valuable and can certainly help people play better golf...but it's going to take some time and energy to really figure out what you need to be working on. It's going to take some commitment from the user.

I think there could be additional "Practice & Learn" modes. Possibly with more clearly, simply defined relationships to whatever measurement you are working on...struggle with impact consistency? struggle with distance control? struggle with a slice? struggle with a hook? struggle with height on iron shots? etc. I'm sure it's incredibly difficult to directly correlate any one measurement to a specific result since there are a lot more variables in the golf swing, but maybe there's room for improvement there. 

 

Play it or Trade it? (16 out of 20)

Honestly this is up in the air for me. I DO think it is a great device. The problem mostly stems from my very basic understanding of the data and my general lack of understanding as far as what makes the most sense to work on, combined with the time required to really get the most out of the deWiz swing modifier.

I don't know if my skill level has anything to do with it, but even the first time using it my numbers were fairly good across the board. The only way I can really get any kind of outlier is if I try to drastically change my swing just to see what it will show with the device. Even then I don't get anything that's outside of recommended values. For me the biggest benefit would just be tightening things up further. I can use the transition, tempo and length of backswing practice modes and just slowly tighten up the practice goals. The wedge practice will certainly help now that I have an understand of my backswing length for specific yardages.

I will keep using the deWiz during the offseason when I'm basically restricted to hitting balls indoors. It's easy to review the data after swings and try to dial things in. During the season I'm not sure how often I'll be checking on the numbers. It could be useful if things really go awry for some reason and I want to see what may have changed in my hand motion. I am looking forward to some outdoor wedge distance practice though.

 

Conclusions

I think it the deWiz swing modifier could be extremely helpful for a lot of golfers. To actually realize the benefits of the device they'll need to invest some time and energy watching videos, going through the deWiz Learning Center and their resources, posting in the swing modifier member groups, etc. I think it's important that anyone considering this device is aware of that. The resources ARE there. It's just not going to be a "put it on, hit some balls, get better" sort of device. For the PGA Professionals or other golf instructors/coaches, I think there is some serious potential. Gain an understanding of the measurements and the device should quickly identify glaring issues average players have with their hand movement in the swing. For better players it could be used to tighten up consistency in different areas.
