Time to talk about 2021 golfing goals?

I’m going to keep my 2021 goals minimal so I can focus more time on each of them.

•Get handicap down to 5 (stuck between 7-11 right now)

•Play more golf (hopefully joining a league this year)

•A front or back 9 score of under par

•A full 18 hole round at Par

Mine are probably different...

My goal is to slowly put this as a secondary hobby for me.  The goal is to play once a month, if I learned anything this month... it is that I put way too much emphasis on golf.  I love this game, but it is time to find a more family friendly and less time consuming hobby.

Realistically, I'd like to shoot 80 or better for the majority of my rounds at my home course. This would be right at the 10 handicap mark, as an 80 is 10.1 differential if my memory serves correct.

Swing is coming around, especially with the longer clubs, and it will just be a question of whether I can mentally translate it to the course. New putter and winter practice with the EXPUTT will hopefully shave a few strokes since putting has been terrible at times in the past.

2021 is going to be a weird year for me, trying to find where golf fits in what will hopefully be a slightly more "normal" summer. I played a lot of golf last year because all of our summer plans were cancelled, and then with #CobraConnect I had extra incentive to get out and play. I didn't practice often until August, and it was no surprise to me that I started to play better in mid-late September and early October the last few times I went out (and even ended the year technically in the single digits).

Truly, I'm just hoping to get out and play a few rounds with my wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. My wife has been sidelined since 2018 with shoulder problems so it's been a long time since she's done more than just occasionally ride along.

Back under the old handicap system, you were supposed to play to your handicap about 25% of the time (https://www.oga.org/back-basics-handicapping-101-playing-your-handicap).  I haven't found an update to that logic since the change to the WHS.  Looking at my last revision, 3 of my last 20 scores have differentials at or below my index, and another two scores are .5 or less above my index.  So I guess the 25% rule is pretty much still in tact.

i’ve got a lofty goal for 2021...

im currently playing off a 19, and the goal is to get down to a 10 next year.

i’ve finally got a bag full of clubs that i was fit into, and i’ve got much better control of the club face (especially the driver) so with any luck and enough rounds, i’ll be down around a 10

Been working on course management and swing.   While my scores haven’t really changed,  my swing and short game are improving and I am seeing periods of solid play.  I need to do better at avoiding costly mistakes…. bad tee shots, chunked pitches, and 3 putts.

Seeing progress is such a great motivator. Awesome work!

As for me:

- Shoot 80 or better for the majority of my rounds at my home course

In 26 18-hole rounds at my home course, I've shot 80 or better 13 times. Almost a majority. I've shot 81 and 82 several more times. I've also broken par on each side, just not together.

Translate EXPUTT and long game work to course

My putting is much improved, at least about two strokes a round according to Arccos data. I credit the EXPUTT and my L.A.B. for that.

My long game is still the weakest part of my game and generally costs me the most strokes. My swing is continuing to improve. But my driver swing and long game are abysmal at times.

- Figure out where golf fits in a "normal" summer

I'm thankful for my course and practice range memberships and a flexible manager. I'm on track to exceed last year's rounds played total despite being busier overall.

Play with the wife and relatives

I've gotten out about eight times on course with the wife, and some range sessions as well. Played a handful of rounds with the brother-in-law, and also a couple with my in-laws. Success here!

most goals done. I feel like I need more!

break 100 consistently (two round at 100 and last two below. Getting there!)

get my handicap at 20 or below ( work IP, down to 26 now)

figure out the top of my bag (Driver consistency, maybe a 5w or SH, do I keep the 3H or go 3 UI all those may need to be addressed with a proper fitting) (top of bag pretty much figured out, just need more practice)

fix my OTT swing and be a better ball striker (Adam young and the planemate has helped. My irons are way more consistent now)

gain swing speed so I can play more mid and shorter clubs into greens  (it’s actually ok but I am going more speed work. Proper ball position and swing mechanics has helped too)

Play in at least 2 AM events around here ( likely not gonna happen this year but you never know)

play a round with some guys from MGS! (Done! @Kenny Band @twyatt700. Hoping to get up to Seattle and play @dlow206unless he ever makes it to PDX)

My goals were a little smaller than most. Lessons and play more than last year. Well Lessons I intend on the off season so that will be an easy check. Playing more not so much. July really put a damper on things with rain. Played a fair amount in May and June to make up for it but going to need to play a lot next month to make up for this record rain.

Positives so far:

-Off the tee I am roughly the same handicap wise according to Arccos but am currently on average longer, which I am happy about, Although the past 2 rounds I have taken some really bad penalties but mid-season woes will be corrected.

-Putting while I still 3 putt, Feel like I am reading greens so much better this year and my lag putting has been spot on. Need to clean up 5'-10'

-2nd year with my irons, I am slowly lowering my approach HCP from +16 to currently sitting on average +9. I have lowered my "short" misses but have increased misses left & long which is fine for me because I know its just an aiming issue now, really wanted to get rid of the shorts as much as possible.

@cnosil hope you don't mind a hacker like me quoting you, but I happen to be on parallel track! .. except for my short game which has not been receiving the same attention as the full swing and needs some work...

Still working to play consistently around bogey golf but keep making errors off the tee or silly mistakes around the greens... Work In Progress!!

Felt like some improvement here is 2020, hitting 5 of 14 fairways need to get that to 6-7

Never thought my driving distance was an issue till this year, 63 must be that age.  Definitely striking ball more solid off the tee in picking up 15 yards. In last 20 rounds. Golf coach at Golftec has been on me to cut the driver down 1/2 inch, just did this first of November.  Will see that affect, wondering if need to get some tape to balance driver

Some good some bad going on here, lag putting happy with that, good control of 3 putts.  In looking at my 10 foot and in putts that is the issue.  My stokes gained in that area - 3,9 vs nine handicap and and -4.3 vs a 7 handicap . Have to Work on those 10 footers can be the biggest area for improvement.  This will be an area to concentrate on in 2021.  Will say that in the fall did a putting fitting and started looking fo new putter.  Think I have settled on the Taylor Made

This area could also be costing me strokes on the green leaving the chips short inside 25 and missing 24% of greens from 25-50 feet. While only costing me -.3 strokes gained.  Although I do feel my club’s greens are big so easier to hit.

Good results here hitting those at end of year goal last 10.  Want to cut the Short shots percentage down would be happier with that being half and increasing long at it’s expense. So getting ready for 2021 replaced 13 year Mizuno MP-57 with there new JPX 921 Hot Metal Irons. Replaced my mishmash of wedges that where 2-8 years old with new Mizuno E21s.  Have only been able to 9 holes with these before the holidays and weather.  So real excited to see how that will change the approach and short game.  My Golf Tech instructor is moving on so new swing coach after the first of the year, will be interesting on how we mesh am more than hopeful for good results.

Well 2021 has not been as planned, Covid long haul hit me, lucky to only have a couple symptoms left and on the right track.  So many of the goals I planned just could not happen this year.  Number of rounds and playing more with my buddies.  Practice plan out the window.  But still working towards the bottom line and starting to see improvement.

Some improvement, feel like just now being able to swing better, Hope to be able to double the rounds played between now and end of the year.  Just made a driver adjustment and getting better yards, but have to get the control back.  short game is better hope to see the scoring come down now.
