Interesting coincidence - my exterminator actually runs his own animal sanctuary .. recently picked up 2 mini ponies at a job he was at .. found them out by a barn looking completely neglected and thin and dirty .. the (unmentionable person) agreed to let the exterminator take them and now, after a lot of vet bills and TLC, they're healthy and happy!

River.  We oft called him River-man or River-dog.  Since moving to AZ my wife has started called him Desert-Dog. Just turned 5 and, while he is adjusting well to life here in AZ, I can't help but think he misses the wide open acreage and swims in the Ruby River back in MT.  Forging back n' forth across the rivers with me fly fishing probably didn't help my catch ratio, but I never cared. 

Honestly I can't believe it's been 5 years since we brought him from Ontario, OR to MT.  We nick-named him 2T because we drove 500 miles to see his litter, pick him, drive home (500 miles), then 3 weeks later drive 500 miles to pick him up and bring him home.  He's been a really great dog and friend to us. 

He adjusted to wintering in Yuma, AZ for 5 seasons, and now the move to Surprise, AZ.  Sun City Grand has some great walking trails and a fantastic dog park.  We are pretty diligent about getting him out twice a day on walks and play time - though that will be throttled a bit during the apex of forthcoming summer heat.  The plus side is that he has lots more friends to play with here; Banjo, Clyde, and Eddie in particular.  They say labs start mellowing at 4 to 5... yeah, right .  I don't care if he acts like a 2 year old at 12 (God willing ).

It's a good thing that I love them.

 

Oh, I know this one. I took an evening walk with my dog at the park. She sprinted toward something by the time I saw what she found, I screamed, “RIPLEY!”

But it was too late, she caught a full snout full of skunk spray. It was Sunday night, and all the pet stores had closed. I had no choice but to put her in my car, drive her home and try to give her a thorough bath.

She smelled like skunk for a month, and for a year every time she got wet, the skunk scent came out.

Exactly this.  It also seems to appear when she decides to go do her 'tanning' thing and lay out in the sun.    Through a lot of hard work, vinegar, charcoal packs, and skunk neutralizer the house only has a hint of the smell in a few spots. 

What I found weirdest about the thing was that the skunk smell is totally different when it's so concentrated.  For me it smelled like a roasted onion, heavily roasted garlic, and other Italian spices at a nostril burning concentration.  I should also note that it made my eyes water, which is because according to my wife it's basically natural tear gas.  The best has been the three and half year old laughing at Dizzy about getting sprayed with oil from a skunks butt.  She keeps yelling EUwwweey and giggling.  Dizzy has this look like she's saying 'being made fun of by my human sister is not one of the reasons I wanted a little kid to play with.'

Maybe too late now but I've heard tomato juice can help with the smell on their fur. And then of course you have to wash _that_ out....!

My dog got into it a few times. Tomato juice worked. After that I always kept a spray bottle of skunk away under the kitchen sink.

Ya know, I know this—because I remember seeing an episode ofThe Partridge Family when a skunk wandered into the family touring bus during a rest stop. 

Thankfully, there are no skunks in Denmark.

I used to watch the Partridge Family when I was young. Then you watch them on TV Land and you say to yourself. How did I watch this. (The Monkeys, Adam 12, Emergency, Original Batman were others)

Here are my two happy bois.

The hound is Reggie, We think he's about 6. We were told he was a 3 y/o beagle mix when we adopted him, but we think he is actually an English or American Fox Hound. Because he's tall and weighs more than any Beagle I've ever met. We've had him for close to 6 years now.

Otis is our Bernese Mountain Dog and we got him last July. He was a rescue from an amish puppy mill in southern ohio. He was 75 lbs when we got him and he weighs about 115 now. He's our bear and doesn't know he's that big, total lap dog. Again, they told us he was 6 months when we got him, but we figure he was actually a little over a year. He put on needed weight, but hasn't got any bigger frame wise. 

FYI - this is the organization we recused Otis through. We've also fostered & helped transport some bernadoodle puppies for them as well.

I keep forgetting about this thread but either see a picture in the scrolling sub forum photos or a post that steers me back.  This thread makes me smile and my blood pressure drop more than any other.  There are a lot of hosed up things in this big old world but pets, especially dogs, seem to make them much less troublesome.  Man (and Woman's) best friend indeed!
