Just had this come through the email and I thought that I would share it with you. I love limited release anything!

While I have never played leather grips on my swinging clubs, I can attest that Best Grips makes a great putter grip. Feel free to chime in on the poll to let all of us know about your leather tendencies.

So here are the awesome green grips just in time for The Masters, or for St. Patricks Day if you don't care about the first major, and if that's the case, you can no longer be my friend.

It's March

and that means it's time for the Augusta Club Grip release, perhaps the most exciting day every year for BestGrips. The Augusta Club Grip was out first special edition grip and now takes advantage of our in house MicroPerf leather. We use our special BG green dye each year to make a batch of green leather and yellow stitch grips just in time for the Masters.

This year, the Augusta line has grown to include an Oversized Club Grip options in addition to our standard club, putter grip, GT-L and alligator offerings. Let's not waste any more time, the Augusta Grips are available now!

That looks SO good. It would be great with my yellow, not so much on the red.

Zach sent me a couple of these when I ordered my putter shoe and putter grip from him a couple years ago, I put it on 3wd I think, I just couldn't get used to the feel of it. I didn't leave it on long. I gave the other to a friend who uses leather grips who had never heard of best grips, so he's been using g it for a year or so, I guess he likes it.

I've never tried best grips ... they're very expensive but also look really nice.  My first "real" driver had a leather grip... I always liked the feel of that.

I might have to give one of these a try.

I have Neuman leather grips on a couple of the classic Macgregor sets. They do not make those any more. Leather will give a unique feel on certain clubs IMHO. Some classic putters feel better with the type of leather grips they came with. Good example certain Wilson 8802s and Spalding TP Mills feel good with leather grips. It just depends on the club and a person's sense of feel. I have thought about trying a leather wrap grip on my Scotty from time to time but have not done so yet.

I think this is the 5th season with mine. So yes, more expensive up front, but you don't have to replace them every year.....or 5.

I suppose if you do decide to go with these you better be able to blow them on/off!

I can't imagine cutting these off.

BG are super tacky and probably tackier because of the addition of ProTac.

I'm going to dip my proverbial toe in and get one of each to see how they compare.  The Grip Masters are a bit more pricey but I'll give it a try and see what works.

  • 2 weeks later...

I loved the Best Grips protack, which is much more consistently applied than Gripmasters.  I've had Gripmasters that were tacky as hell and others that have no tack at all.

My only gripe is that Best Grips is all stitchbacks, and I prefer wraps.  The pronounced stitching on a lot of stitchbacks is no bueno for me.

Their "D" underlisting for putters is great on TP Mills and 8802s or anything that needs a paddle grip.  But for God's sake, make some wraps!

I just can't see myself buying boutique leather grips. I suppose from a nostalgic standpoint they might make sense for an old classic - vintage set of clubs or something.

$19+ a grip ($247 - 13 grips)  doesn't work for me.

Play well and enjoy them if you have them.

Honestly plaid it comes down to feel and durability. The Best Grips have a performance level to them that rubber just simply cant match and these things wear like steel. You're talking YEARS or usability (check their website for their durability comparison where they leave a leather grip outside and exposed to the sun and do the same with a rubber one) and they are able to be blown on/off with a gun, so you can move these from set to set.

Bones has been using the same set for 4 years. That's one example.

Totally worth it!

I've been leather only going back to roughly 2011.  First with sourcing Neumann straps and underlistings, which I still do for putters.  There is nothing better!

The ho in me has grown to like Gripmasters and Best Grips for "swinging" clubs with a preference for Gripmaster wraps.  The Best Grips are more consistent for tack, but I'm used to a standard taper versus the Best Grips protaper underlistings as well as the fact that Best prefers stitchbacks and I like wraps.  This is not a knock against Best Grips any more that it is against Ping for not producing forged carbon steel cavity backs with zero offset.  They have chosen their market and it just doesn't fit my preferences.

The value in these grips is that they last for years and can be blown onto new set when you get bored with your current set, and we all will eventually.  I transferred one set of wraps onto four different sets of irons before they went on my keeper set (1986 Tommy Armour 986 forged blades) and they are still fresh and tacky going on 6 years.  Before that, I would replace my Lamkin Crossline Blacks about 3X/year.  I have found deals on leather online and have never paid more than $200 for a set of grips, so to me, they pay for themselves in about a season.  After that, they are more cost effective for me.
