How do you take out your frustration on the course?

Usually it's one F word, and I'll let it go. Not a scream at the top of my lungs tho. Just enough to let out the frustration.

There is no spoon.

I've never thrown a club, just gently tossed a few in the general direction of the cart. I've played sports my whole life so it's kinda easy to move on quickly. Plus I know I suck. Once you come to terms with that, this game becomes less frustrating

When I played junior golf, the bottom of my bag was covered with duct tape, as were the bags of many of my co-competitors. My only broken club came in high school when I slammed the head of my beloved Ping B-61 into the ground after my partner missed a three footer that cost us each $50. That was the last time I took my frustration out on my clubs.

I was still kind of a hothead until my 30s. Then I finally realized that I'm not good enough to get mad when I play golf.

These days, if I'm playing with my pals, I'll use a choice word or two. But I play so much with kids at TFT these days that I try not to say anything other than a quick "no!" and get over it right away. Bad shots are inevitable, and frustration is a natural reaction, but I want to be sure kids learn to let it go quickly and move on to the next shot.

I'll admit I chunked a club or two back in my younger years.  Golf will no doubt frustrate most folks enough to have an irrational moment.  The good thing is the older I get the less frustrated I become.  Note the LESS word because the game will still irritate the best of us.  I played yesterday with some friends at a really hard golf course. We all played crappy as the wind was howling and the course was long. It would have been a perfect club throwing day. Hell we could have had a competition of sorts with the longest thrower winning the hole. The thing is the older you get the more sense you get. Plus you might throw ya shoulder out helicoptering a club. When you're about to blow ya fuse take a deep breath, calm down, and think about something more important than golf. Yea we're blessed so think about the real things in life.

I'm a calculated club thrower meaning I throw it with an idea of where it will land and how. I never just fling one end over end to where it can take off but I'll sling one sideways knowing it will land softly. But I'm a club thrower and a curser. I cuss into my towel to muffle it. But I can also be pretty tame and just walk off the hole onto the next one. Learned a long time ago that any frustration with a shot has to end before the next shot.

I usually say "oh my god..."

Then laugh.

Then remember I live in Hawaii and I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford this ridiculous sport and it's on to the next one. Pros aren't immune to shanks or 3-putts. Stuff happens, no need to act like a baby and make the people you're playing with feel uncomfortable.

I have never thrown a club. When I was about 9 or 10 yrs old, I saw my cousin wrap a fairway wood around a small tree that had a stake attached for support. He did this in a tournament.......eventually he got his tour card, then lost it like he always lost his temper after a bad shot. I promised my Grandfather that I would never throw a club. I may swear like the sailor I am, but I really can't afford to throw clubs.

Played this morning and the best golfer in our group was having a horrendous day, 3 doubles front he shot somewhere around 95. In the 16th hole he hit a trap on his drive, successfully got out and chunked his next shot into green side bunker. Whatever iron he had went flying in the air and he had good height on it, really funny. He wasn't around anyone so no big deal. All he could do was laugh. He parred 17th for the smooth 95. BTW he's never done thus B4 and most likely never will.

You know that is really sad. Golf is supposed to be fun, even even it's frustrating. I used to get really mad sometimes myself but I'm finding that the more lessons I take as the note I educate myself on my game the less frustrated I am and the more I focus my frustration on fixing the next shot

It depends on what caused the frustration. If it's my game just smile more and after some rookie mistakes usually caused by rushing or mental erro, I'll have a talk with myself and calm down.

If it's another player(s), I'd be polite but assertive and try to reduce or eliminate the root problem. In general I don't let anything bothers me or ruin my Zen time. Every once in a while I'd let a little monster out to get the situation under control. Rare but happens.

I used to do most, slam the clubs, throwing things, and cussing out to myself but then I realized it's stupid to have that kind of expectations not even pros can hit good shots everytime. I'm nowhere near their ability so just chill.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ive thrown a club or 3 in my time but not in 25 years. Never a throw but a toss.

Old softball and golf buddy had a horrible golf attitude. Ive seem him climb a tree to get his putter out of it. A week later on the same hole with the same putter I witnessed him throw it and land on a roof. He casually walked to the front of the house, knocked, and asked she she had a ladder so he could reteieve his putter. She obliged. Funniest thing ever. Seen him break a driver over his knee as well. Oh, also was lucky enough to be in his foursome when he failed to hit it past the ladies tee box. It wasnt pretty if you understand the rule.

I get frustrated but let it go and bank bad shots in memory to think about at the 19th hole at the end of the round.

I'll tell you, throwing clubs has been a problem for me in the past but I really am working hard on it. I played arguably the worst round of golf I have played in years this past weekend, I didn't throw any clubs, and I only slammed one club back into the bag. This is huge for me. I couldn't hit anything that day. Driver, 3w, 5-PW, nothing, I couldn't even putt. I missed 7 putts inside of 3 feet, and 3 putted 5 times. It was horrible. I shot an 88, which in the grand scheme of things is pretty good considering nothing was working, no thrown clubs though, so it was a good day.
