There are times I hate this game....

After showing flashes of being able to play decent golf Sunday, I was +9 after 5 holes in league last night. I really wanted to bash my head against a tree because the problem this time was chipping yips (short game is normally a strength). Everything else was fairly tolerable/normal. Terrible chip on 2 that led to a 3-putt. 2 chips on 3, 2 chips and a poor bunker shot on 5 (chip over green and into bunker, poor bunker shot, requiring another chip). The last 4 holes were more reasonable and at least gave me some hope - par, par, par, bogey. I burned the edge with birdie putts on 2 of the 3 pars. Meanwhile, my opponent (also a 4 in our league) went out and shot a 34. It was lovely to watch, but he really kicked my butt.

The dumb thing is I have actually been practicing short game recently - a trip to the practice area at the range and some chipping around in my back yard after similar crap on Sunday.

Got out later in the evening for twilight golf and managed 7 holes

Lipped out at least 3 putts, fairway woods and hybrids still directionally challenged

Drives were mostly to very good

and finally, the irons were on, both distance and aim point. 
If the iron play continues this good, I'll really have to manage the course better from hole back to make sure I can get in the goldilocks approach zone

Played a quick 9 before league last night and ended up shooting a 44. Overall was a pretty decent round, but carded three doubles after some poor approach and chip shots added extra strokes getting onto the green. Putted well and finished with 17 putts and also drove the ball respectably well. Started the round off with a 262 yard 3 wood  but it was aided with a good kick on a slightly downhill portion of the fairway. Regardless, it was the most pure strike I've ever had with that club. Promptly followed with thinning my gap wedge and having to chip onto the green and not at the pin due to a tree . 4 pars and 2 bogeys rounded out the rest of the round.

Had a rough start to my round yesterday. Was +7 through the first 7 holes with three doubles. The course didn’t have a driving range and I had a bad case of the pull hooks early. Normally I can work it out quickly on the range but it was difficult to both diagnose and correct mid round. My problem was I wasn’t transferring my weight on the downswing and it was causing me to come over the top. Badly. Three of my first 5 tee shots were 30-40 yards left of the fairway. Finally got it worked out on 8 and all was well. Finished my last 11 holes -1 with three birdies but the damage was already done.
Still, it felt good to be able to keep my mental game together well enough to get my game back on track. My putting was solid and 4 birdies on the day and a couple par saves gave me something positive to take away. 

Still have a lot of work to do on my approach shots though. But for now I will focus more on my short game as I think I can make a bigger impact on my game there.

Played 9 today at Bixby Village's par 30 after hitting the range. My irons have come back alive after a long break and I was very satisfied in that area and the couple of holes I brought out the Qi10 for. My chipping and putting leave much to be desired. I should have been at least par on this course today if I could've made a putt. But overall, a solid day.

I've had a solid couple of days.  Checked out a little Par 3 course yesterday that I've been eyeballing and almost holed out my first swing of the day (what a way to start a round that would have been) -- Tap in Birdie.  Finished the course at +1 when my birdie attempt on 9 lipped out.  Little hidden gem course that was weirdly empty.  If you're in Socal and the southbay area check out Westdrift Par 3.  It belongs to the hotel and it's a neat little golf course built into this little bowl.  Big hotel on one side and condos on the other.

Today I got out for 18.  Had kind of a strange day where I either crushing off the tee and leaving myself with in between club numbers or was in complete jail.  I was also inaccurate with my irons, but in a strange twist striking them too well?  I overshot the green six times.  Fortunately my short game saved my bacon today.  Had no idea what the score was until I tallied up at the end of the round.  42/37 79.  I was making pars on the back 9, but it felt sporadic like I was never hitting a rhythm it just didn't feel like I was playing that well.  Go figure.     Started with a bogey and a double then just kind of stopped paying attention -- which I think was the saving grace.  Just playing the shot in front of me as well as I could.  Finished with a 12ft. birdie putt on 18.  9/15 Fairways, 7/18 GIR, 30 Putts (mostly due to a 13 putt back 9).

Today, I got to play Heathrow Country Club near Orlando.  I struggled a bit on the front.  The greens, which were redone recently, had been punched 11 days ago and were quite hard, were not very receptive.  I had a number of my approaches wind up well off the green.  I was having a hard time adjusting.  5 bogeys later I carded a 40 on the front.  Starting the back 9 I was already dreading the island green that loomed ahead.  I parred 10 & 11 after getting the ball to stop on the green.  Then came the island!  From the tees I was playing it was 115 to the pin.  The green was much larger than I thought it would be.  I hit a sand wedge to the center of the green.  However, with my draw and the hardness of the green it rolled off the left side near the cobblestone path.  A chip with my 58* and I had a tap in for par.  My very lonely birdie occurred on #13.  After that it was all pars until 18.  One lost ball later and I had my first double of the day.  Thus, I shot a 77 on the par 71 course.  Stupid me, I didn't even realize it was a par 71 until I was finished.  Guess I was just playing one shot at a time, for once, and not paying attention to much else.  

It was a very humid hazy day making for a sticky walk.  I was very thankful that they allowed me to walk.  Riding in those wee buggies usually adds 5-10 strokes to my game.  All-in-all it was a good day.  Played well.  Course was in very good shape, with a nod to the green conditions mentioned above.  The staff is amazing.  I cannot recommend Heathrow Country Club more highly.  If you get the chance you should give it a shot.

Shot a 43 tonight in my twilight round. 5/7 fairways but only 1 GIR. I had 2 other holes where I landed on the green but bounced or rolled off. 3 pars, 2 doubles - one came on a par 5 where I yanked my fairway wood off the deck into the woods so I had to take the penalty.  The ER 5 was fantastic for me, more on that in the testing thread.

Got out for 9 at the 9 hole course here in Cheytown. It’s the first time I played it this year. 

Kinda off and on… shorter shaft in the driver, and tried my first Star grip. The sidewinder is a nice grip and it worked well. Shortened a 4 Dot Newton to 44 1/2” and didn’t bomb the drive, just consistent. Play this course again tomorrow. I should be playing in the Wyoming Open, but that’s next year. Was able to get out and play 18 at Hills Golf Course, which is a unique par 69 track. We played the more challenging back 9 first because of league play that was going off the front. I shot a 5 over 40 on the back, which was 1 shot over my goal of 39. The front is much easier and I was disappointed with a 41 on that side for a +12, 81 on the day.

I was disappointed with two parts of my round... 1. I had 5 topped shots on the front side and 2. My chipping game felt like a foreign language. 

I was pleased with my Driver play and my long irons (5&6 irons).

Stats below:

FWs: 4/13 31%
Playable Drives: 9/13 69%
GIR: 7/18 39%
Putts: 33
Up & Downs: 3/10 30%

The highlight of the round was an extremely boring birdie on a tough uphill par 4. I hit a 285 yard drive along the left side of the fairway (OB all down the right side). The approach was a 70 yard 50* wedge shot 12 ft long right of the pin (anywhere else on the green makes for a tricky putt) and made the putt. It was my only birdie on the day.

Was able to get out recently on an absolutely horrendous day to play, 90 degrees and like 90% ish humidity. Humidity has been brutal… like drinking the air to breath type of humid. Had two large gatorades in the cart and still felt dehydrated but whatever. 
Let’s say the score did not reflect play. Ended up scoring an 81 on the par 70. Back 9 started pretty good birdie, par, par. Then the ball striking and score started to slip. One of those where the terrible shots just kinda ended up working somewhat. I’d like to play the weather but it was a combination of just being sweaty and hot, frustration, and idk lack of focus I guess. Having the Vortex Blade Slope rangefinder helped out incredibly on those tricky chip shots and ended up dropping several from 45 yards out to within. 5 ft and just rolled the putts. 17th green kinda messed me up cause green was under repair so it was on slightly shorter fairway grass. Par 3s are still my nemesis so maybe play a par 3 round to get the practice in.

Sometimes just have to take your medicine on shots and carry on. I am confused though how my handicap went from 13.1 to 13.5 on 18 birdies when I shot the best 18 hole round I ever have.

Wild Bunch play yesterday was difficult. Shot 41/41 with a course handicap of 5 on a par 73 course. The game was 3 player teams, score 2 net balls per hole. This week they hole punched the course and the greens were a sandy mess. We have had no rain so the Bermuda grass has not come in well so there are lots of patches of just root mass, that yesterday were muddy and full of holes. 

Plus I was swinging too hard. My work on golf habits pinpointed the problem. My set up was wrong. I had been working on power/distance on the driving range with my LagShot driver. The setup with that club is slightly different-to compensate for the whip of that club shaft- than what I use with my driver, and I was using that setup. My setup is the trigger for the type of swing I use. 

Let me elaborate I have 1, uno, eins, un, swing setup that triggers a good swing. I have lots of setups that will trigger a swing that will NOT go the way I want, but only one that works consistently and accurately.  

The LagShot driver is HEAVY and working with it has increased my distance, but I tend to cheat with it for a little more umph. That cheat with a regular club sends my balls sailing in all sorts of directions of which only  1 of 3 is the direction I want. Change the setup and my cheat goes away and I finished the last 10 holes at even par.

Haha, yeah, well at the time it seems like hey, this is the new normal, no problem and I'll keep making pars. But it's a false sense of security and "normal" play can strike at any time.

Twelve-hole golf this morning was a bit meh. I didn’t play too badly, but I did have a couple blowup holes that could have been avoided. 

I can feel myself wanting to get back on the range and work out some stuff in my strokes. I’m lacking distance consistency in my 6-PW irons—which may in part have to do with some training I’ve been doing with Fit For Golf.

I’ve got one more outing at the course tomorrow. I’ll see how it goes.

Got off starter duties at 2, was about to head home when one of the other starters asked me to fill in as a 4th for his weekly team round. They play team scramble style. 

The good:

I HAD 13 FIR on my drives. We used 4 of them. but this was my best day for drives yet!

2 of them were over 240 yards,  the other 2 were a bit shorter, but team mate went OB or water. But he was driving 270 on his that stayed inbounds .

We had 2 eagles today too. One I chipped in from 15 yards. Landed it about 5 feet from pin and it just trickled into the cup. All 4 of us had a little whoop! Moment on the green. The other eagle he landed a 220 yard shot that skipped up beside a bunker lip and landed on the skirt of the green. I drained the putt from 25 feet away (estimated)

We used one of my shots on a par 3 too. 176 yards,  used the 4hy, (ball on a short tee) started right and drew up to the lower shelf and rolled up to 5 feet of pin.

Had several great birdie opportunities, my putting was on fire today. We had left a few on the deck though that we're just trouble putts no matter what.  We shot -11 total.

No bogeys through the round!

The bad: 

I tried several times to use the 19 and 22 910 hybrids today.  I need some range time with them as I was spraying them all over the place. Embarrassing is not a strong enough word as to how i felt after those incidents! Also sure I need to adjust them too. (Just have to find the RIGHT chart for them)

2 of the players are in their 60s. They are pumping out 260+ yard drives and make it look so easy. One is playing a Stealth 2 the other is on a Qi10 max. My partner is my age and squashing that ball 270 + playing a Mavrik driver on a hazrdus senior shaft

To say the very least, today was both exciting and humbling simultaneously. 

This was the only pic I was able to snap. We finished the round in 3h40min!!!

How’d I play….well, we won our group! Me, meh…we all hammed and egged it. Couldn’t make a putt. But I hit four DODs! They were game savers for us. My drive on all 4 par 5s were either left in trees or right in trees so I had no choice. Ended up parring all 4 because of the DOD! Had a pitching wedge go 171 yards out of the rough on a par 4, left and past the green. Almost took out a player on the next tee. It was a flyer and was shocked it went that far. @Derek Eskam and I were both kinda like “what the hell?” It wasn’t a cut or blade, it was over trees. 

We had a blast though!

A rather damp league night tonight, but I played a solid round overall. We have had a fair amount of rain this week, including a couple of deluges mid afternoon, and the course is on a flood plain! The staff do a great job with the course and it was in about as good a condition as could have been expected. Soft greens, fairways, everything. Rough wet and heavy. Greens were very slow for the most part, aside from a couple on hills that drain quickly and have a very 'healthy' slope to them.

Highlight of the round was the third hole for us (course #2), a par 3 with the pin at 148 yards. A smooth and well struck 9-iron landed very close and after checking back a few inches came to a stop less than a foot from the pin.

The minor downside, I didn't have any cash on me so didn't put my dollar in for the closest to the pin comp for the day. Ha ha. Doh!

I was playing against a 20 year old who had one shot from me (HCP diff) and I won my two holes, shooting a 39 (+3) for the 4th time in the league this year (out of 6 outings I think). I bogeyed the two par 5s that I usually par at least (second par 5 is a real birdie opportunity usually) and had a couple of other silly 3-putts. 18 putts for the 9 holes explains why I didn't shoot lower. For the long putts, I just couldn't gauge how much harder than usual the ball needed to be hit! Particularly the downhill putts that pulled up a lot shorter than usual.

My partner won his match by two shots too and our combined score was lower, so we should score reasonably well.

Driver was ok today. Not spectacular, but decent enough. No drops/ lost balls. 3 wood and 3H really behaved themselves. I can feel that my iron swing is in a very good place with good direction and shot shape control. Confidence is definitely up with them and the hybrid and I feel my game is trending in the right direction. Just need to be more consistent with the putter. My putting alignment and green reading feels good, just distance control I'm really lacking.  Looking forward to putting some practice green time in with the new Scotty, starting tomorrow afternoon (weather allowing).

Back to the same course Sunday morning for our standard weekly practice round...

Played in a scramble yesterday for the local high school athletic fundraiser. Shot -10 as a group on a course that can only be described as "soupy" with 3 inches of rain that fell overnight. Swim goggles were necessary for most parts of the course as the mud and water spraying up in your face was excessive. I lost my first drive in an 8" deep puddle on the cart path, and all the bunkers were being pumped out by the grounds crew. As ridiculous as the conditions were, we all had a blast! My pointers learned from the lesson on Tuesday were not necessarily applied well, as I struggled off the tee for most of the day with the driver, leaking hard right with one bad top. However, my short game and putter were absolutely on fire. I hit birdie putts on 1, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 17, and the highlight of the day was a 45' eagle putt on my nemesis hole #13 after I drove the green (with a purchased pink tee) with a 263 yard 3 wood. Slipped it in through the side door and busted out the Pete Webber "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE - I AM!" celebration. I also stuck a 195' yard 4 iron to 6 feet on #7 to set up one of my birdies. Other than that, we had a clean scorecard and scrambled well, getting up and down on the other 9 holes. This event has some real cheaters ringers in attendance every year, I believe that the low score was a 54 (-18), but last year was a 51. Going to try to sneak in another 9 or 18 this weekend and sometime next week before I take off for Canada with my brother, nephew, son and dad next Friday.

I've been meaning to add this for about a week but I've been trying to catch up with life's nagging list of things to do.

I played at a local public course with 36 holes. It has the Championship Course and the Executive. The Executive is an extremely short course with many par 3's and 4's. Some people complain it is too short, but it has advantages. Most prefer to play the longer Championship course, this helps keep the Executive course more vacant. The second advantage is that because it is so short and vacant. If you desire to play a quick game before resuming your day, you can knock out a game in a very short time. Despite being a couple of months since playing the Championship course, the Executive course also seemed to be in better shape.

 

The round went pretty well (for my standards). I really had an opportunity to practice approaches and some of those awkward distances. I made some good chips and pitches and some not-so-good ones. Putting for the most part went well for my level. I managed to get the most pars in my life and even managed a birdie (its a very short course so it is not a feat of brilliance and talent).

 

Overall I scored an 85 or +23. It is not a very good score on a very short and easy course, but I do feel its an improvement in my ability for the most part.

 

I have decided to pull the trigger and have finally decided to get lessons. I'm very much looking forward to them and hopefully a lower score. I have already had a few lessons, and they are completely changing my view on my swing. It's a struggle to get the mechanics right, but look forward to attempting this course again after a lot of practice.

Shot 39 this morning, had to birdie 18 to break 40. 18 is a par 5 that I reach in 2 alot and I did today. Played 1 inch too much break for the eagle but I am happy for the birdie.
