I've never played so well and felt so negative about it. I hit almost every fairway, the worst miss behind trees I hit a 9i over the trees to 15' for a look at birdie. I missed that and the other 9 birdie chances I saw from 5-25' plus an eagle from the fringe that rolled over the left edge. 

I went around the track doing everything I wanted it seemed, but the short game came up short.

My putter was ice cold today. This was the first round with my new @GolfSub70 mallet 04, but I couldn't bring any new putter mojo. I'm loving the feel so far, just may need to make some adjustments and go practice a bit more with it before the next round. This course has really tough greens, but 39 putts is atrocious. Still in a groove with the iron play and off the tee is heating up. Did a call-the-score betting game with the boys and had a chance to hit my prediction on the number, just needed a par on 18 but lipped out the par putt for an 89, but still won the bet by being closest. Overall not the best I have played at this course but definitely not the worst.  

44% GIR - my avg 36%

14% FIR - my avg 33%, but had mostly good lies on the first cut

Played well even after rolling out the cart! just kidding. 

Greens and fairways need some work, bald dried out areas on some greens and a lot of crab grass in almost all fairways. This course used to be in tip top shape in the past, but now seems all they do is cut and water.

The Lakeview course is a different story, always nice and plush.

The frequent aeration and top dressing are taking a toll on my putting!  The course Maintenace people have aerated all the greens just over two week ago and aerated/top dressed one more time in a week on about half the holes.    I left at least four or five just short, just long or on the lip today.  As a result, the greens are running at inconsistent speeds.  Throw in there are irrigation pipes all over the course as they are replacing all the PVC irrigation pipes with an olefin-based polymer (five-month project).  

Decent day hitting the fairways (almost 80%) and average on my GIR (11%). My longest drive was 191 yards, which for me is significantly longer than most.  Twice, my drives were heading into the penalty area or OB when I hit a tree and the ball went into the fairway!  Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.  Then again, you can't always count on good luck! 

The four up and downs should have been 6 or 7.  

Our Summer men's league had 15 players today which historically is pretty good.  If we get four on Thursday, it will be a miracle.  Wednesday starts the two-day Lobster Mini Season in Florida where residents and visitors can capture legal sized lobsters by diving in open water (no traps).  It's crazy how many visitors will trailer down boats, stay for three, four or more days, gas up the boats, etc. for six warm water lobsters (per person on the boat/day).  I think if they did the math on the expenses, it would run $100-200 per pound for those lobsters.   The good thing is many Lobster Mini Season as major family outings, likely the last before kids go back to school in two weeks.

Not a very good day of driving the ball. Left myself in some places I have never been. That wasn’t a good thing! However, the Callaway Paradym irons, Vokey SM9 Wedges and new BATTLE READY II BAT ATTACK PUTTER saved me. The new putter is just awesome. Had 28 putts! Funny how when one part of the game goes another tends to show up. Had a lot of quality shots over, under and around trees and trouble today. It was like an escape highlight reel, ha ha. Hopefully the next round is cleaner and played from the short grass!

This weekend is a major tournament for me. I’ve been driving the ball like crap, and irons have been useable but not crisp. Wedges and putter have been great. This is a solo tournament that uses full handicap. I’ve been as low as a 6 about a month ago but the driver has been kicking my butt. 

I worked on the driver yesterday and had high hopes. But more importantly, I had a new strategy. That is that I am already -18 for this tournament this weekend. I only need to maintain my scores. 

I had visions of hitting powerful straight drives and hitting to the center of the green. Sadly, while I hit straight drives, they were not as powerful or good as yesterday and the irons were not exactly crisp, but my philosophy was to aim at the big side of the green. 

While technically I hit every fairway, which is an improvement, they were not the ball flight I was wanting. Approach shots were missed on the correct side, and I had a number of “easy” chips and pitches. I say “easy” because they are my forte and fortunate lies. 
 

 

What I don’t get about the strokes gained numbers is that the putting is 4.79 strokes gained and the short game is -.051. Why is the short game so low. I pitched in from 68 yards, and pitched and chipped to within 5 feet 9 times. 

All in all, this was the best round I have had since 2015, amd my first sub-par round since then. I was striking the ball better towards the end of the round. I hope to play this well tomorrow, but I did not have money on todays round and really no pressure.

What started as a well intentioned and prepared round quickly escalated into mediocrity. Had a couple good driving and putting days recently so I wanted to really buckle down and attack what is a pretty easy course and try to break par. That goal was over after a bogey on 2 and a double on 4. A scramble par on a short par 5 (460 yards) all but cemented my fate that I’d have to wait for another day. Going to tackle Beatrice Country Club tomorrow so hopefully I get my driving back on track soon.

I think this may be an executive 9 hole course... but @berkeleybob can verify.

Correct. It’s a mix of par 3s and 4s.

No. I hadn’t even thought of an executive course since my high school days long ago. That course was a par 61. Learned a lot about how to play smart golf on that course.

It’s funny, out here in Denmark most if not all of the golf clubs have at least two courses. The 18 and the 9. Some have a 6-hole as well. They’re all at least semi-private, and new players have to go through a sort of testing time to show that their skills are appropriate to the course. I’m pretty sure I’m fine to be on an 18-hole out here, but we’ll see.
