Mid-Round Lethargy

GB13

Recommended Posts

The first 12 holes of my round, my swing is normally in a groove, I have enough energy to hold off my release and have enough body speed. After hole 12 (walking) I get a little tired and lose body speed, then flip my hands causing a big hook.

So my question is, how do y'all combat this loss of energy? What is your midround secret to keeping your swing going?

I have been on the range hitting a lot of balls after I get tired trying to increase endurance. Is this the best route to go?

Only thing that worked for me was actually getting into better shape overall. When I started working out I noticed I stayed much fresher even in very hot weather

Hitting balls on the range won't do it.

Instead over hydrate, consider a mid round snack - banana, trail mix, protein bar. How's your fitness? If that's an issue then you could work on it a bit too. But I'm thinking you'll be fine with the hydration/snack combo.

Definitely shouldn't be fitness, I am a pretty strong runner. I can run 5 miles pretty easily and am working on getting the mile under 7 minutes. I will try the snack and hydration method. Thanks.

The snack one is a food suggestion. Don't just snack around the time you lose energy do it the whole round. But around the turn eat a protein bar or something that will gi e you prolonged energy without a boat load of carbs. Your body uses carbs, protein, then fat in that order for energy. What I mean by that is it will use sugars als carbs for energy first because your body digests/breaks them down easily. And after is great but add something like a powerade zero to keep you hydrated better and that keeps the sugars down as well.

I read an interesting article the other day about hydration and exercise. It recommended a couple of things - one is that you should drink half your weight in ounces. So if you weight 200 lbs you should drink 100 oz a day especially during days you workout. The other is that drinking water WELL before you exercise is critical for optimum performance.

A personal observation: there are days when I'm extremely tired and then I realize I drank very little water that day. I then start drinking lots of water 40-60 oz. and I feel better a couple of hours later

So a couple of hours before I play I start drinking water 20+ oz. during the round I drink about another 40 oz. plus a Powerade. I also carry at least a sandwich + peanut butter crackers.

Drink at least a 1/2 gallon of water everyday, drink plenty of water during your round. Have some carbs and sugar during your round but make sure it's nothing that will cause a spike in sugar followed by the crash. Pbj, nuts, granola, banana, ham&cheese, protein bar are all good options. Something to add electrolytes back into the body like Gatorade

Totally agree with all the recommendations regarding staying well hydrated.  It use to be the courses had at least one water cooler on each nine, but that's not the norm anymore.  In warmer months, I've started freezing 1/2 - 3/4 bottles of water then topping them off.  In addition to providing cold water which I like, they keep my snacks cold.  If it's really warm, and I'm walking, I'll keep a couple in the car and p/u at the turn (if course layout allows).

We do the same with the water bottles.  Our course however, has two water coolers on each nine holes:  #5, #8, #13 and #16.  Hey!  It's a desert here, and it's over 100º a lot.  They are changed out with fresh ice water every day.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I always ate before the roubd but struggled mid round at times. Last few roubds I started eating protein bar or whatever and it really helps. I always drink at about evrery hole espexially when hit. I freeze gatorade bottles as well. I really like to freezer theCV little capri suns and they are great for a burst if eneegy.

Last year I wasn't as fit as this year and 18 holes would wash me out.

Nothing more to add here. Eat regularly during your round and drink plenty of water. And no booze till you're finished.

If that doesn't help go see your doctor.
